Name Change With Ssa- mail in option

Powers2, on June 1, 2018 at 5:41 PM Posted in Married Life 0 11

Hi all!

I was married about 4 weeks ago and I am eager to change my name - as I currently have my ex husbands last name.

I filed my signed marriage license with the county and I have received back my certified marriage cert, the one with the raised seal, as well as a few extra certified copies to keep.

I filled out the SSA form on line, and I see that they also need one of my certified marriage certificates-- totally fine.

I also see that you need to include proof of identity- either a driver's lic or a passport. Here is my question, which is probably a dumb one, but do you send in your passport or license to the SSA? Do you mail in a photo copy? I can't find this info anywhere on the SSA site and I tried calling but the wait time was 45 minutes...

I can't remember from the last time what I did here-- it was over 10 years ago.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they need originals of all documents. Though it doesn't make sense to mail your drivers license so not sure how you would handle that...

I chose to deal with SSA in person because I didn't want to send the originals of my documents in the mail! It only took about 30 minutes at the office then it was done. The DMV took wayyyyy longer and that has to be done in person.

Thanks, I agree that it makes sense that they would need to see the originals of everything.

Our SSA office is only open till 4 pm though so I would have to take a day off of work to accomplish which is what I was trying to avoid at all costs. boo!

I did mine in person, I didn’t have an appointment so I was there for about an hour. I had to have the marriage license, my ID and I also brought my passport but I don’t recall them really looking at it. I didn’t want to do it via mail so it was worth it. I received it in the mail in about 2 weeks.

I did mine in person too and it was the easiest part of the process. I went over lunch and was in and out in less than 5 minutes, I was the only person in the place besides the employees. You could always call and get wait times during lunch or any other convenient times.

You should be able to make an appointment. Maybe make it for later in the day so you only have to miss half a day of work?

I mailed in my divorce decree with the raised seal, my original SS car, my new marriage license with the raised seal but not my license nor was a copy requested. I got the raised seal docs back ASAP, they kept the card and I got my new SS card about two weeks later.

The one in my area doesn’t take appointments, and I’m not permitted to take time off in half day increments, unfortunately.

Everything has to be the original, no copies. I just mailed mine in.

I think you can make copies of your license and social security cards. I did mine in person and it took about 10 minutes, had my new card in a week. And they gave me a paper saying i applied for a card, and I was able to take that to the license branch the next day (so before I had my card) and I got my license with my new name on it.

I just mailed in an application and a certified copy of our marriage certificate (I bought two copies). It took a month to get my new SS card.
