I have some regrets about my wedding video...

Sarahdell, on May 5, 2015 at 12:50 PM Posted in Married Life 0 16

When I met with my videographer last Summer, I was told that he could not use any mainstream music due to copyrights, music royalties and all that jazz.

I was new the WW forums and asked if anyone else had run in to the same issues. I had seen very few wedding videos so I wasn't sure if that was a thing or not. (link below)

So now, 6 months after my wedding and after watching hundreds of wedding videos from other brides here as well as on YouTube, I have come to be disappointed with my wedding video.

Most recently, Tania's video damn near had me in tears because of her music selection and the personality that it brought to the video.

I wanted H's and my personality to come though in our video through the songs we chose. The music is good... its just not OUR music - the music we carefully chose to represent our relationship on the biggest/happiest day of our lives.

I just want to tell everyone DON’T SETTLE. If there is something you want that you are told you can’t have (a song in a video, a certain flower, a style of cake) get a second opinion.

I wish I had. Smiley sad

We couldn't do mainstream either, and couldn't pick the song. It had to be an indie song of some sort. I haven't seen my video yet, so I'm a little nervous about what song he chose, but with all of the other videos I've seen him do, I did like the music, so I'm optimistic. I had one video guy tell me that he could only chose from a selection of Christian music lol. Not that I have anything against Christian music, but it's just not our jam...no pun intended.

I'm sorry you ran into the issue, however thank you for the heads up. I'm not sure if we can afford a videographer yet, it wasn't in our original budget, however we're hoping be can scrape together a bit of money to hire one.

@KM - I felt the same way about mine - happy with his other videos and the music he chose and I was happy with our video in the beginning. The music is good but I have no desire to watch our entrance at the reception or any of the dances. What is the point in even having the first dance in the video if it's dubbed to some song I'd never heard until the video? Maybe I am over thinking it. I just wish I could watch H and I dance to the song we chose rather than some B-reel music.

Can you post your video again? I want to see it! And I totally get that. Our first dance was a country song, but the video is going to be some sort of hip indie song, so I'm interested in how he's going to spin it. If I ever get it...

I can only post the trailer because the videographer put it on YouTube. Our whole video is on a DVD and I have no idea how to convert it to digital format. Our walk out song from the ceremony was On Top of the World by Imagine Dragons so the song walking out of the ceremony at the end of the video is a little awkward because we walked out to a more upbeat song while the song in the video is more traditional.

We walked in to the reception to Ladies and Gentlemen by Saliva and the song in the video doesn't match at all. Our first dance was country... he chose something with no words. Our parent dances were very sentimental - Foo Fighters and Somewhere Over the Rainbow and the music he chose is mundane instrumental. It just saps the meaning from those things to have dumb music.

Okay I totally get what you mean. Our music will be very different from that (less string quartet). But hey, a lot of women would do anything to be able to have video, so I guess you can take that away from it...at least you have it?

When we received our video it was nice but i was surprised that they hadn't asked us for song selections. I sent them the main songs we used at our ceremony and reception and now I have a 2nd dvd with new songs! also, there was a bit I asked them to cut out and they did. it just all surprised me that the company didn't think to do these things themselves from the start

@FMP - Thank you Smiley smile

@KM - I agree... I would be more sad to have no video at all.

@Mrs.Temme - You sent them the music after they had already given you the video?

My videographer chose our music... and i was totally happy with it. i understand that they couldn't use mainstream music and i wonder about all the other videographers that do. do they not care? do they not know? they must possibly know...

idk. i thought my videographer chose great music and the music went very well with the story that was being told. definitely had me bawling.

i guess i can see how people would be disappointed in not being able to chose their own music, but i wasn't bothered by it. :/ our videos are amazing with what was chosen.

our long form documentary that is still and always will be password protected online has our actual ceremony music and "faithfully" by journey playing during the reception footage. because it's not shared freely online, i think that was ok. i'm glad that our actual ceremony music is in it, but i could honestly care less about anything else.

Sarah I'm sitting here at work crying!! Your vows were so beautiful, and it was a really nice video. I understand what you're saying about the music, but it did keep the attention on you and Nick. Beautiful!

VMDIZZLE: A lot of videographers buy the song, depending on the song. One of the songs I REALLY wanted was "Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap, but because it had been used in many commercials, the markup was super high, so it couldn't be done.

My videographer also warned me about the music, but he said he has a lot of songs and if there is a song we really want he can purchase the copyrights for us. So, I'm hoping everything turns out great. I am sorry you are dissapointed in the music Smiley sad

Thanks ladies - your compliments on the video help a little. I think I may ask our videographer for the raw footage so that I can at least watch our dances with the music even if not in the entirety of the video.
