Changing your last name

Lara, on August 11, 2018 at 12:46 AM Posted in Married Life 0 10
Hey ladies!

my name is Lara and I have recently married my husband in Milwaukee just a little shy over two months ago. I don’t know where to begin to change my last name... I am a Milwaukee public school teacher and would like to have my name officially changed by the start of the school year (sept. 4) Any advice for how to begin the process? Thank you all so much and congratulations on all of your marital accomplishments!

I think u have 2 wait 2 change ur last name in the school system. I was they only do it once a year and that cut off passed from what a teacher told me. I would check 1st w maybe HRfor ur job and then start at the DMV. Congrats!

You can always look up how to change your last name in Milwaukee. I know in Florida first thing is to take you marriage license and ID to the social security office to get a new card, after that you take your new SS card to the DMV to change it on your license, and sometimes you can call your bank(s) over the phone to change it, other times you have to go in. I have no clue about how to change it in the school system.

Regardless of when you officially change your name, can't you just introduce yourself to your students and their parents using your new name? They can call you by your new name even before the paperwork is complete. (I have an unusual last name, so many students call me "Mrs. O", which, of course, isn't my "real" name.)

I think alot of states are different but in NV you have to wait to get your marriage certificate, then start at the social security office, then the DMV. I have no idea about the school system. I would think you would have to take your marriage certificate to your district office maybe?

Hi! Congrats on your marriage! I'm also in Milwaukee and have done a bit of research into the process. As far as changing your name with the school district, you'll probably have to call someone about that. For my work, all I have to do is send a copy of my social security card to HR.

Anyway, you'll need a certified copy of your marriage license. Then you can go to a social security office and get a new card. Then you can get your driver's license changed. Usually you'll need your driver's license and a copy of your marriage certificate to change the name on your bank accounts, loans, credit cards, etc.

Completely agree. Introduce yourself with your new last name. Speak to admin during your first few staff days so everyone is on board. Then go through legally changing it. I hyphenated and chose to go by my maiden name in school still.
