Any Ideas for Home Based Business or Low-Cost Start Up businesses

brandlyn, on July 11, 2011 at 4:13 PM Posted in Married Life 0 21

MY FH and I are both teachers and our wedding plans have wiped us out all of our savings. Does anyone have any experience with home-based businesses or low cost start up businesses.

What about a lawn service biz? Mostly summer work (when you're not teaching).

Well, we are both working almost 12 hours/day/ 6 days/week now; but to answer your question Im not sure. We come from families who own businesses we are just trying to get opinions. 2 mechanic shops, 1 restaurant, 1 bakery, 1 childcare center, and a Wedding Planning and Event Design Firm.

I think Brian is giving great advice here. Also, when you say "low-cost start up" can you please define "low-cost"? For me I would think anything under $10k is a low cost to start up a company but you may have a different idea.

Low start up cost for us would be no more than $30K

    Thanks for the great advice!

We would both quit our part-time jobs to make it work; and eventually I would quit my teaching job; and just become an adjunct professor and teach online

If you are really serious about it I would suggest finding something that both you and your FH are passionate about and trying to make a business out of that.

@Brandlyn I am also a teacher and the best bet is child care! You can go to your local thrift stores or even wholesale companies to get all that you need.

@Brian C. I have been a Pampered Chef Consultant since last November. I not only made back my investment of ONLY $80, but I also profited another $50 with my FIRST show. Just like anything else, you should do your research and not jump into anything too soon. But speaking for TPC, it is completely legitimate, no strings attached. ANYONE can do it, and you can quit after your first 3 shows, no questions asked, or resume your business anytime you want. I have been steadily building my income, I can make about $200 extra doing 3 cooking shows a month.

Some other great Direct Seller opportunities:

    Celebrating Home

    Miche Bags

    Avon

    Scentsy Candles

I have several friends in these businesses, all are very happy and making a good income.

Here's an article from the Today Show with some great tips and info:

There are some very viable home based businesses- but it all depends on what you want. I did PrePaid Legal for a while and made dang good money! I still make good money from the residual income. But it's hard, like any of them.

I couldn't do any of the direct sales that require inventory (Pampered Chef, Avon, Amway, Miche bags, etc). Its just not my thing, and there is so much competition.

I think for you- you might want to consider tutoring on the side. But frankly, with 12 hour days, 6 days a week- I don't think anything else is realistic for you at this point. You said it's wiping out your savings- but can you honestly afford to give up your current position to wait potentially 6 months to a year (or even longer with a traditional business) for something to become profitable?

I sold passion parties for years. I made tonnnns of money but i did put a bunch of time into it! I would put about 4hrs into a party planning and all..and profit about $300. for the night.
