Creating a new last name

Sara, on November 16, 2019 at 1:44 AM Posted in Married Life 0 7
What are everyone’s thoughts on creating a new last name? My fiancé’s last name is Laranang (it’s Filipino) and mine is Johnson (I’m white lol). We were thinking of combining to make Lawson. I like the idea of sharing a last name with him but I don’t know if my name really works with his last name. Thoughts?

I know a few couples that have both taken a new name they’ve picked together. I think it’s super sweet. If you’re both as excited and love the name I think it’s a great option.

Do whatever makes you two happy. But I don’t think you have to worry about being white with a Filipino last name. I had a coworker once who was blonde hair/blue eyed lady with last name Sanchez. I didn’t question it but she told us that her husband was from Mexico then said “that’s why I’m Sanchez (then pointing to her face) but not Sanchez”. You may be over thinking that part of it!

I think it’s cool when couples do this, but I also wouldn’t stress about your name not matching the culture of your fiancé’s. I have the opposite situation now, I have an unusual Arabic first name with my husband’s very common white last name and it sounds fine, haha. But names are a situation where you just have to do what is going to make you comfortable and happy and not worry about what others will think. For what it’s worth, I think Larson makes more sense as a combo name than Lawson with those two names!

We have decided to hyphenate, we’re both from families with only girls so we both wanted to keep our last names to carry on the family name. I had suggested mashing up our names (Hamilton and Fischer) to make Hamscher but she doesn’t like that hahaha

I was going to say the same... Larson seems to honor both names a bit more!

I agree that it encompasses his name a bit more but he and I both like sound of Lawson better Smiley smile
