COVID brides- how has the name change process been for you?

Sophia, on October 7, 2020 at 5:29 PM Posted in Married Life 1 28
For recent COVID brides- how has the name change process been for you? I think this has been more stressful than my wedding 😂 My problem is the SSA offices aren’t accepting name change appointments and obviously no walk-in’s, but I can’t just mail my crucial documents and be without my driver’s license for weeks! What is everyone doing given the circumstances? I don’t have a valid passport (mine expired) so I only have a driver’s license and birth certificate. I’m concerned that having my married name on my husband’s health insurance and not having that reflected on my ID may cause some issues, of which I need to deal with soon given I need to transfer my medications to his. I’m in Maryland if anyone has done this process there.

I called my local social security office and the process wasn’t that bad. They didn’t require my drivers license or birth certificate just the application and marriage certificate. I sent it via certified USPS and received my marriage license back and new social security card within 3 weeks.

    Hope that helps and congrats!

In Massachusetts I only had to mail my original marriage certificate and the application. I got it back pretty fast too, considering...

I live in Maryland and haven't had the chance to update my driver's license but my social security card has been updated. I am on my husband's issue with my married name and it hasn't been an issue at least for me.

So did you just send in the application and certified marriage license without any other legal documents? The application says that a license and birth certificate or passport has to be shown to, but it seems others haven’t needed to do that which would make this so much simpler!

Can you get a government issued ID to send in? When I called to ask what I needed to send in they said I could also send in a work ID or an insurance card.

What county are you in? Not all counties in Maryland aren't accepting name change appointments. I'm in Maryland as well and this is actually the first time I heard of them not accepting appointments.

I’m in Anne Arundel but I can go anywhere! I called some number but they said they weren’t taking appointments for name changes, but I was going to try again with another number I found for the Glen Burnie office.

UPDATE: my local SSA said I can just mail my certified marriage license and application, no other documents needed. Just put a note that says that I have authorization to not have a form of ID because I’ve been married within the last two years. FYI for anyone else who may run into this problem. Apparently not everyone at SSA knows this so it’s important to include a note with the other forms!

NIGHTMAREEEEEE. I was married 2/29/2. It took THIRTEEN WEEKS to get my SSN updated abs I had to send in my PASSPORT. The DMVs here still aren’t providing full services due to covid abd early voting — so I won’t have an updated DL until NOVEMBERRRR 🤣🤣🤣 OHHH MY.

Oh this is good to know, I'm in Maryland as well. I'm getting married soon, my car is registered in VA, I haven't done my state inspection (lol) because I was waiting to get my name changed, change my documents and register my car to Maryland. It's good to know that in Maryland fashion it will take sometime. smh

I just got married Oct. 3, and was just looking through this process in Maryland as well! May I ask which office you called to get approval to just send in the marriage certificate and application instead of birth certificate? When I called they said I needed the birth certificate and if I did not want to send it in the mail I would just have to wait until they reopen, which is unknown!

What county are you in? I am in Anne Arundel county and have been having the same issues. Are the rules different in your county?

Same thing was happening to me! When I called the Glen Burnie office in Anne Arundel County and explained I couldn’t be without my crucial documents, they told me because I’ve been married in the past two years I didn’t need to have an official document other than the marriage license. She did say to write a note to send with the application and certified copy of the marriage license because not everyone who works in SSA knows that? You would think they should all know that 😂

That is so crazy! They even said you could send a COPY of your marriage license, not the original? The first place I called said I needed to mail in my drivers license... I was like okay how am I supposed to drive while I wait for it? The guy said "I can't answer that right now." Like WHAT?! Are you mailing it to the Glen Burnie office then? That is where they said you could do it?

You are allowed a certified copy of a marriage license which you have to get from the courts! I know it’s insane. I’ll let you know if they cause me any issues, I just mailed all my stuff on Friday to the Glen Burnie office.

Apparently now NO SSA offices in Maryland are taking any in person appointments for name changes. You have to mail in the documents and they will return your originals in the mail
