Combining Anniversary Party with Birthday Party

Maria, on March 5, 2020 at 2:05 PM Posted in Married Life 0 6

I'm not sure where else to ask this question so I thought I would go to the married life experts!

My parents will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this September. They were originally planning on a having an anniversary party but my grandma's 85th birthday is also in September and my parents are usually the ones to plan those types of gatherings.

They considered combining the two (my grandma only has a handful of friends still living and knows my other side of the family well) but thought it might be too much so now they will probably nix the anniversary party and just do a birthday party/family camp-out weekend at their house.

Is there any good way to combine these two events? I really don't want them to miss celebrating this milestone event since a lot can happen in 10 years before their 50th. I've considered a surprise anniversary party at their house or a local hall over the summer but that just makes 2 parties to plan for, buy food for, etc. (~200 guests) The size seems too large for an ordinary BBQ pitch-in. My only other ideas were doing an evening party (after 7pm) with just snacks and drinks and a live band starting around 8 during a cold weather time like Feb/March 2021.

Thoughts?

I'm sure that they could be combined, but I'm not sure that they should. These are two big events that deserve their own celebration. Does grandma's party need to be elaborate since she has a small circle of friends? Could it be something intimate at a restaurant for lunch or dinner?

If people plan on coming for an entire weekend, I think it's totally fine to do anniversary celebration Saturday & birthday party Sunday!

I agree, that's why I'm not really in favor of combining them. Grandma has 8 children (+ spouses), 30 grandchildren, ? great-grandchildren so an intimate party isn't really possible if family is to be included.

I like your idea of making each celebration its own day on the same weekend. The camp-out idea was only meant to include my one side of the family (means half the guests and none of my parents' friends) but I will certainly pitch the idea of making it a multi-day event! Thanks!

Maybe host your parent's anniversary party Saturday around lunch time, then extend the stayover/next day celebration to only your grandmother's family & friends for a Sunday lunch party?

That could work! Hopefully everyone would be willing to attend both and not just pick and choose...either way I guess we could see everyone! Thanks for your idea, it's definitely a new one so I will share with my parents Smiley smile
