Changing ssa Name through the Mail

Curious about this too! I hate that their hours are so inconvenient. I went in over lunchtime one day and looking at the amount of people there, the wait was 1-2 hour minimum.

I think I have heard 3-4 weeks in the past for name change via mail but you have to make sure you have all the correct documents. It definitely still worries me to send all that personal info through the mail so we'll see what route I go.

I sent mine over night mail and received a call a few days later asking me to come in person and show my ID, honestly, you need your social security for everything I'd bite the bullet and just go in person. Try making an appointment, since I was called I had an appointment made and was in and and out in 10 minutes. I sent everything : birth cert, old social, marriage cert and I still needed to prove my identity so just go in person its way easier. I know it sucks to wait and all but it's the most important thing you need to change your name everywhere else. Good Luck

Maybe that'll work, I was updating my passport at the same time so I did not have that available to use. Fingers crossed though! When I read the instructions I felt confident that I was doing it right because why else would they give you the option to have it done by mail right? Just keep an eye on your phone, they'll call you and leave you 1 message and thats it. Luckily they hooked me up with a next day appointment first thing in the morning.

I would try and make an appointment. i know its nearly impossible with work but they need to see originals of your marriage license and will need your photo ID. They also confirm the information they have on record that is on your birth certificate

I sent this on Monday and they mailed back my passport immediately, got it back by Saturday!

I know this is an old post, but what photo ID did you send in? I'm super confused on how to go about doing this because the only photo ID I have is my driver's license and I can't not have it for an extended period of time.
