Changing Name on License?

Not sure if anyone will know the answer to this but thought I'd reach out and see because google wouldn't give me an answer lol.

My question is how long after you get your last name changed do you have to change it on your ID? I just got my SS card and money is a bit tight while DH is in between jobs and we may be moving soon (also up in the air) so we were wondering if there was a grace period on changing my name on my ID? I'm not hopeful there is though...

It depends on the state. Typically it's two weeks, but they also typically won't do anything to you if you wait longer. Just make sure you do things using the name on your driver's license. That's what everyone looks at for id. I didn't transfer my driver's license from state to state (not name change), for three months last time I moved. Nothing bad happened, but I also didn't get pulled over.

I think it’s 30 days but you can always call your local dmv and ask them

I was worried about this after I eloped so we did it same day. I wouldn't wait longer than 2 weeks and make sure you bring everything you may need. DMV can be very picky, make sure to bring your birth certificate, marriage license and new social security number! Also, they may want a new picture so make sure your hair looks nice that day good luck!

I think it depends on the state. I couldn't do it same day because I had to wait until my new SS card came in the mail otherwise my DL wouldn't have been "compliant" and I would have had to get another within a year or two.
You also don't have to change your name right away.... I waited like 6 months before changing mine.
