Changing my name

Nicole, on August 31, 2020 at 8:36 PM Posted in Married Life 0 6
So I finally got our marriage certificate and I’m starting the process of changing my name starting with my social security card. I was wondering for proof of identity and proof of age, am I able to just mail in my passport? Or do I need more than one document? I only have one copy of my birth certificate and I don’t think I have time to go to the clerk’s office to get another one since I work M-F when they’re open. Also, do they mail back my legal documents? Any other tips on changing your name?

I would think its different for each state. Go online and check your local area's requirements.

Your passport should be fine since it's a federal legal document. And yes, they are supposed to mail all your documents back to you (although I recently saw someone on here post that they lost her documents).

I would call your local office to be sure but passport should work! I don’t think birth certificate is something they accept. They told me a photo ID of some sort or even an insurance card would work. They mailed my documents back to me.

When I called the social security office they recommended mailing all of your documents via certified mail along with a pre-paid and addressed certified envelope back to you for your documents.

I called my local office and they mentioned an employee goes one time a week to check on the mailbox for anything mailed. She basically told me it wasn’t secure and they aren’t liable if they loose your stuff. So I’m going to wait. Last thing I need is my passport being lost

Call your local office to see what they need. I assumed I would just send in my passport but when I called he said if my marriage certificate had my DOB on it I didn't need to send in another form of ID. So I just sent that along with the application and got my new card in a couple of weeks. They also sent back everything I mailed to them within a week or two.
