Hi, everyone!

My DH and I eloped on April 1st in DC! Now that everything is said and done, I am heading to the SSA office today to change my name. I haven't fully decided yet if I am dropping my maiden name all together, or make my maiden name my middle name and take my husband's last name as my own (changing middle name after marriage is allowed in my state - Kentucky).

My concern if I change my legal name to FirstName MaidenName LastName is when it comes to updating my drivers license with the new licensing format (Real ID) which is set to come out later this year in KY. The county clerk (we do not have DMV's) warned me that it may present a problem, but she is not 100% sure, since my birth certificate, marriage license, drivers license, and proof of residency documents will not necessarily all match. Last name change only is not a big deal, but apparently maiden to middle can cause issues. The thing is, they don't know themselves - they just say it MAY be an issue.

So now I am wondering if it is worth the (potential) issue to do this or if I should just change my legal last name only.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Did you attempt a real Id??? I’m facing a similar situation and just curious if it worked out! I want to change my maiden name to my middle but I hate to go through court if I can sneak by!

I think you shouldn't need a real ID if you have a passport, that should trump it all, so I would think that matching your license would suffice?
