Cashing checks after wedding

Kathryn, on July 19, 2016 at 1:35 PM Posted in Married Life 0 14

Did you have any issues cashing checks after the weddings? Most checks are made out to both of us with my new name and my name isn't changed yet. We don't have a joint account, so it makes things trickier. I'm being told we both have to be in to cash the checks and they won't cash until they have proof of my new name. Any advice?

Take a copy of your marriage certificate and go to the bank to do it in person. Every bank is different, but usually you can show your marriage certificate and endorse them there and then deposit them. You shouldn't need to deposit it into a joint account as long as both of you have endorsed it.

We talked to both of our banks and found it was best to deposit all checks into his bank account. We had to go in person and I had to bring both my ID and our marriage license. I would call both your and DH's banks and see what they say. They have dealt with this situation many times before.

This depends on your bank. Just call them before you go in. My husband was not on my account either & many used my new name as well. I just had to sign both my old & new name and my husband had to sign too. I also provided a copy of my marriage license. And my husband did not have to be present. It's really not a big deal.

You may not be able to cash them but you could deposit them. We had no issues. We took our marriage license just in case the bank needed to see it.

Shouldn't be an issue. most of the time you can bring in your marriage license and ID and deposit them.

We thought we would but didn't. We also used mobile checking, so maybe that helped. We got a bunch of name variations. Some with just first names, same with out first names with DH's last name, some to one of us, etc.

Hopefully I get the marriage license soon because they won't let us cash them without it!

@Katherine, I'd try a different branch or just sign both your names to back of the check and deposit through ATM. Try it with one and if it works great ( it's not like the bank won't give you your deposit ) if it doesn't then wait for your marriage certificate.

I didn't even think about it and I signed my maiden name & did not even have my husband sign them & then I deposited all of them with my phone into my account. Not a joint account. I had zero issues or delays. I think if you are depositing and not cashing it is a lot easier, but I am a little surprised that my husband not signing them too didn't flag them. Probably because I did it on my phone?

Luckily we had a joint account and I was able to sign the back as Aubrey Maiden-Married. We sat down with someone in our bank and she said that that would cover our bases.

I know you said you wanted to cash them, but it's probably easier to just deposit them first. In my experience, banks tend to be less strict with a deposit vs cash back. We received a lot of checks written out every which way. My husband signed them all and deposited them into our joint account. I didn't sign any and this was also prior to changing my name.

We had a joint account and deposited everything through mobile. It was no problem.

My bank is being especially finicky about it because we don't have joint accounts. If I don't get the marriage certificate in the next week we'll try another branch or just open a joint account since we already plan to eventually.
