Birth certificate is wrong!

Amber, on September 28, 2017 at 7:03 AM Posted in Married Life 0 13

So to get my new SS card and drivers license and all that stuff I had to order a new birth certificate from vital records. I got it today and it's all wrong! They spelled my mother's name wrong and the father listed is not the man listed on my original birth certificate. They also just left my parents birthplace fields blank.

I have seen my original birth certificate a long time ago. I thought that they couldn't change the information on your birth certificate like this?

Is this going to be a problem? I had planned on going to the social security office today.

Are you sure your parents didn't just fill stuff in? I'm pretty sure they just send you a copy...also who would fuck with it and change random shit? Like why?

Did you see an actual copy of the filed certificate a long time ago, or the one that the hospital gives out? I would probably go down to the county if you're in the area and double check.

FWIW when my mom went to get her marriage certificate they couldn't find her record. She questioned my grandma and learned that her middle name on the official certificate was not what she had been told her whole life.

Long story short...my mom was married to her first husband and screwing around on him. I'm the second guy's kid...not her husband's. The original had her husband's name on it. This one has my biological fathers name on it, which I am happy about, but I don't want it to be a problem at the social security office today...

What I was told was her husband threatened to actually push for adultery charges if she didn't put him down as the father...

She had my name legally changed to my bio-dad's after she divorced him so I guess they automatically change it on my birth certificate retroactively? None of these people are alive now to get the actual story from them.

    Jerry Springer shit right there...

I didn't need my birth certificate to change my name. I filled out a form online and took it to the office (and waited, and waited, and waited, but that's another story)

If they filled in the actual correct information then either you parents did something to update it or what you saw before was not your official birth certificate.

I'm guessing the change to your birth certificate had to do with child support payments and who was going to be on the hook for them when your mom divorced her first husband. It should not matter for changing your name with SS.

I didn't need my birth certificate to change at SSA, just license and marriage certificate. The form on SSA asks for your parents info, but I asked the guy if I had to include my parents SSN (I didn't want to unless necessary) and he said for marriage name change you don't even need the parents info. My form only included their name. The DMV needed my new ssa card and my marriage certificate to change. You may have to wait the two weeks until your ssa comes in to change the license, although I imagine that varies by state.

I think as long as your name is fine you're ok. I dont think they need to know your parents names.

    @melissa is correct here.

My birth certificate shows a different man as my father. My mother was married to him when she was pregnant. You cant get divorced while pregnant and he automatically goes on the birth certificate as father in Ohio.

I had to have an amendment to change it when I was 4. Now I have a packet of papers that go with my birth certificate to prove I am me.

@Beachy is that still the law in Ohio? Considering that pregnancy is one of the times a woman is at highest risk of intimate partner violence, why on Earth would she be barred from divorce during such a vulnerable time?

You won't need your birth cert to change your name with SS. Also when you legally change your name as a minor they don't change your birth certificate.
