Hi. We were married in September and I'm now getting around to changing my name. I can't decide what I want to do. We don't plan to have kids but he really wants me to change my name. Hi. We were married in September and I'm now getting around to changing my name. I can't decide what I want to do. We don't plan to have kids but he really wants me to change my name. However I don't want to lose my maiden name completely, but I don't really want to hyphenate either. So I'm thinking FirstName MiddleName MyLastName HisLastName.

If you have done this what has your experience been with having two last names? What are the downsides? Do you always use both last names? Can you use the two interchangeably? How do you have work email addresses that are traditionally first initial and last name? Do you have problems filling out online forms? Do you have to always sign everything with both last names? Anything else that is problematic?

I got married in May of 2020 but finally changed my name last month. I just added on his last name to mine and have no issues at all. I did it this way because my father passed away in 2012, so I didn't want to give up the name and also because being a veteran and having 3 degrees behind my name, it would be too easier to just add his on and keep my maiden vs trying to change up everything. At work, I still go by my maiden, though I have my paperwork changed to the new one. It's easier that way being that I have a huge amount of clients that I work with. I use my new name with anything new that I sign up for and I'll also use it when I go back to school.

I did mine as “first name middle name maiden-partners last name”. So far everything has been fine except for when I purchased a car they assumed my maiden name was my middle name so we had to get that fixed. Personally, I like having the hyphen so people don’t continually assume that his last name is mine as well. Other small annoyance is that it’s a lot to write out but I don’t have to write out my full name often.
