How early is to early to send out save the dates?

Me and my fh like cooking on the grill and I didnt know if it would be tacky or not to have a BBQ reception, I mean to have the food cooked on a grill and served to our guests, not have like attending a cookout, let me know

I'm torn right now, I dont know weather to plan a wedding or just go to the justice of the peace. It would be cheaper and quicker; any suggestions?
