Finding my wedding dress with Linda and the English Dept team was so much fun! Their shop feels like a secret hideaway off of Clinton full of beautiful dresses and accessories. Linda did a great job pulling dresses similar to my initial plan, but also encouraging me to try on different styles as well, all within my budget. She would provide a kind opinion when needed, but also stepped back and let me take my time making a decision.
Getting alterations done with Erin was a simple and seamless (haha) process! She makes you feel so comfortable, even in potentially awkward situations, and will listen and acknowledge all of your questions and concerns. The shop also specializes in vintage dresses which was perfect given I wore my great-grandmother’s wedding dress as my going away dress. The dress had a couple small tears, but Erin was able work her magic and repair the dress and no one would know the tears were ever there! Thank you Erin, Linda, and the English Dept for helping me find my dress and making sure it fit perfectly!

User6379821 Sent on 07/21/2013The English Dept. is exactly what I hoped to find when I launched into wedding dress shopping - a small, personal experience with beautiful unique simple dresses that are not to froo-froo, poofy or 1000 lbs. I was planning my Portland wedding from Brooklyn, NY but wanted to find most items in Portland, so I flew in for a whirlwind weekend of dress shopping. I had done a little research (and my mom has looked far and wide in Portland & Seattle), so we had a list of places to check out, but English Dept. was my first and favorite spot. We walked in and Chelsea helped in a non-pushy way. I tried on about 8-10 dresses with my dress (Elizabeth Dye's Circa dress) being the last. I fell in love with the feel of the dress (dancing was a priority and it was not heavy and could move), the simple, elegant look and all. Then, Chelsea pulled out a beautiful Twig & Honey headpiece and I fell in love with that too. It was a one-stop wedding dress shopping excursion. My mom and I went to a few more places but came back to English Dept. the next day and bought the dress. I just got married and had the time of my life - eating, dancing and wearing my dress until we closed down the after-party bar at 2:30am. I love it even more seeing the pictures. Thank you Elizabeth, Chelsea and the English Dept. team! -

The shop is beautiful and the atmosphere was everything I had hoped and dreamed it would be. I felt so special while trying on dresses and when I found my dress the staff was so supportive and excited for me. The designers are all amazing and their prices were very reasonable. Overall the whole experience was perfect! I am so happy with my purchase and would recommend this vendor for brides looking for a less traditional wedding dress. Love, love, love!

User1995993 Sent on 01/04/2015Beautifully unique collections! Helpful, and non-invasive staff, Britta was fantastic. They only take two appointments at once, due to the space. Which I found to be pleasantly intimate and like my appointment was the focus, vs. having distractions from other multiple brides trying on dresses. The dress I choose was created from a local designer, which was an important component for me, even got to meet her at the trunk show. There is a reasonable range of prices too. We ended up spending a little more than originally planned, but got 10% off when purchasing during the trunk show. Again, really beautiful options at this shop, their style was my favorite out of all the shops I tried dresses on :) -

This was the second shop we went to, but we aren't dress novices so I had a true idea of what I wanted. I told them what I wanted and what I didn't love initially and they pulled some things for me. To be honest, I started to get very disheartened because I wasn't liking anything, then she pulled THE ONE! What I loved is that they weren't afraid to push me out of my comfort zone. I never would have picked out this dress because it had one detail that I said I didn't want. She took a risk and it paid off. She was really in tune with me, and she could tell that I was starting to get disheartened but she stayed super positive. Their selection is smaller, and definitely more eclectic, but they also have some VERY unique pieces that I wish I had the guts to wear. -

I would absolutely not recommend them to anyone. They have been extremely difficult to get in touch with over the past few months and multiple times I have had to work with the designer directly to get anything done (I got some custom additions to my dress). My dress has been finished for almost 3 weeks and is still sitting at the designer's shop because The English Dept. hasn't gotten back to her either. And today we got a call from a "seasonal worker" (who was very nice and tried her best) to let us know that they are on vacation until next week!! I understand everyone needs a break, but this is the busiest season for weddings and they didn't even leave anyone in charge who could get these things done, or anything in their notes about who the designer was or what dress I ordered. The in-person initial appointment was great, but everything since then has been absolutely unprofessional and very frustrating. Looking back on other reviews, it seems that the lack of communication and potential stealing of money is not just an issue I've had. I've talked to multiple people now who have paid them and not received their dress. I would HIGHLY reconsider going to them for your wedding dress. I've also reached out to a few designers that they stock and have been told they are aware of the issues, so it's not just me that is experiencing this. I'm at the point of being very glad my dress is still with the designer as I don't feel confident at all that they would get it to me if it were still with them. We have paid them a significant amount of money and the designer hasn't seen any of it.
