Hotel Rooms
We used the JW Marriott as our main hotel for our guests to stay in, with our venue being just 3 blocks away at The Rice. The JW Marriott Downtown Houston exceeded our expectations! My wife and I were told by many of our friends that something will likely go wrong during the wedding process. I can honestly say that everything went smoothly! We can't thank the staff and hotel enough. Several friends have commented that this was one of the best weddings they've attended.
We were surrounded by a great team of professionals that included: Kristina, Alti, Gabriela, Adrienne and many others. These individuals were very flexible and accommodating to both myself as well as our guests. I think a large reason for the success had to do with planning on the front end primarily with Kristina.
The venue in our opinion is very modern and unique. The chef did an outstanding job with the meals. I would highly recommend this venue and their staff to assist you in your big day.The JW Marriott Downtown Houston exceeded our expectations! We worked with the JW Marriott in Downtown Houston for almost a year planning our daughter's wedding for 220 people. We had guests coming from Brazil, Mexico and Ireland and England as well as all over the USA. Kristina Bontrager and her team did an AMAZING job and we had one of the best weddings that many of our guests had ever attended. Food was fabulous, the bar was stocked with Premier quality alcohol and the champagne was top notch. Hotel rooms for guests were all enjoyed and the staff did their best to make the event go off smoothly. We would definitely highly recommend this venue and their hard working personnel. Kristina and the entire staff at the JW Marriott downtown were amazing to work with. As the wedding coordinator to my clients getting married, I couldn't have been happier. They treated my clients like they were VIPs, which is so nice to see as a coordinator. Kristina always responded promptly with my questions and found answers just as efficiently. She also stayed until past cake cutting, which is very rare for a hotel coordinator. Most hotel coordinators do not attend the day of the wedding and hand off everything to the banquet captain. She went above and beyond as well as the rest of her staff on the day of. The venue is so unique while maintaining luxury and definitely deserving of a 5 star hotel rating. Everything about our wedding here was top drawer. We toured almost every hotel in the city. Being on a tight budget, we wanted a venue that was elegant and timeless.
By far this hotel blew every other out of the water. The Carter Room was the most romantic setting for our ceremony. Super easy to keep the reception in the same place! Being only downstairs, the Monet Room was perfect for our wedding size of 65.
Kristine Bontrager was a blessing. She was upfront and honest about the costs involved, and made sure to keep us in budget. How refreshing to have someone who was just excited about our big day as we were!
The entire staff of the Hotel is extremely professional, kind, willing to help, and had a sincere smile while doing so. All the nerves and stress melted away. I could not have asked for more.
The food was extremely delicious, the location is perfect, just an overall great experience. The options and packages give you a good opportunity to make you wedding as unique as yourself.
The hotel itself is stunning with fabulous decor. The rooms were so luxurious! I'm so happy we chose the Downtown JW. The amount of compliments from friends and family about our wedding was overwhelming.
Even touring more expensive places, the ceremony rooms were awful little meeting rooms with red velvet curtains and old carpet. Office ceiling tiles... I was beginning to worry we'd never find a ceremony and reception room that would give us the real wow factor/romance we were so desperate to find. If you're going to tour, make this the first place. You'll compare every place after until you realize how clear of a choice it is.
I cannot thank the JW Marriott Downtown staff enough. Returning their since our wedding brings a warm feeling and a smile to my face.

When we began looking at venues we want a venue that was unique, but also served exceptional food. Chef Drew and team knocked it out of the ballpark. They we're willing to work with us to make sure all our dietary needs were covered. Chef Drew helped us put together the perfect menu for our event.
Kristina Bontrager was great and very easy to work with. Working with her I knew I did not have to worry about any detail that may have been missed. She was there to guide us every step of the way. My husband and I had an amazing wedding weekend and reception at the JW Marriott this August. It's a beautiful hotel- the building history, art collection, Main Kitchen restaurant, and excellent service really sets it apart. Our reception was held in the Picasso Room. It's a perfect setting and so unique compared to many other hotel ballrooms. The art, wood floors, and lounge furniture gives it a modern and warm gallery feel. We had a cocktail hour out in the foyer which was a great way for us to mingle and greet a lot of our guests before dinner. The drinks, food, and wait staff were all excellent.
Kristina was incredibly helpful and accommodating throughout our planning process. Her attention to detail made us feel very comfortable. It's really all the little details she thought of that made the night so special for us. Our favorite cocktails were waiting for us and our wedding party when we arrived, we had our own waitress the whole night, she reserved the hotel's Porsche for our exit, and she worked with the vendors all day so we didn't have to worry about it. The whole night went so smoothly because of her planning. You really don't need to hire another wedding coordinator if you book with the JW. With the catering and tasting done in house, that's one less thing to have to find and hire yourself. My bridal cake was amazing from Edible Designs by Jessie, and comes with the hotel package. Kristina called and confirmed all of our other vendors as well.
We also loved that we could make a weekend out of it with everyone staying at the hotel. We were able to spend more time with our friends and family which was so nice. What am AMAZING venue! My daughter know immediately that this was where she wanted to have her wedding reception! It doesn't feel like your average hotel ballroom...if feels like you are in an upscale art gallery!! OUTSTANDING VENUE
We just had our daughter’s wedding reception in the Picasso room of the JW Marriott Downtown and this venue is OUTSTANDING! The hotel is city-chic and totally renovated and all of our guests loved staying there. Our out-of-town guests loved hopping on the rail in front of the hotel and exploring Houston. They loved going up to their room after the reception without the hassle of transportation. The 806 Lounge, headed by the infamous Chef Drew, has a fantastic menu and was a perfect gathering place on Friday and Saturday after the reception. The food at the reception was INCREDIBLE...with fabulous presentation and brought out on HOT plates. Chef Drew hit it out of the park. The artwork in the Picasso provides a classy, elegant backdrop for the reception. The Picasso was plenty big for a 9 piece band with a stage, dance floor, tables for 200 +, and plenty of room to mingle. There are so many great places in the hotel for wedding pictures, and the bridal suite was awesome. Hair and make-up set up in the bridal suite so all the wedding party could hang out in the hotel together with their significant others and go back and forth for their appointments and they all loved that part. The service at the JW is top notch...from the bellmen to the servers to the front desk...they were everywhere making sure everything the entire weekend was perfect. We had a large wedding party and a ton of out of town guests and having it all in one place made it easy and relaxing for everyone. James was FABULOUS to work with and handled everything with the utmost in professionalism. We are still hearing rave reviews from all of our guests on the hotel, the food, and the service. We couldn't have been more pleased with the JW Marriott Downtown. BOOK IT!

The entire team was professional, respected our time, busy schedules, and feedback.
Samantha D. and Ivory T. were superstars! The chefs and banquet team were also outstanding and were able to accommodate specific dietary restrictions and cultural requests including vegan, gluten-free cakes, special grasshopper tacos, roasted pig and numerous other requests we made in a list. They also easily adjusted when we streamlined our cocktail hour beverages.
Ivory and Daffney were also fabulous with our hotel block.
Samantha especially was incredibly helpful and patient even in the last moments of wedding week when we were struggling with late vendors and logistics. She always maintained the highest level of professionalism and remained solution oriented.
As busy professionals who were clear on what we wanted, we needed professional vendors who could set realistic expectations, be responsive and execute plans efficiently. Samantha was clear on what they could and could not do and we so respected this. No false promises, no fluff, just polite professionalism. We had one or two phone calls and fewer than a dozen e-mails for a 130-guest reception. Our two tastings were also just as efficient, and Samantha sent summary e-mails with next steps right away. Yes, Samantha was that efficient.
The reception in Picasso was beautiful, food and cakes phenomenal and service impeccable. They even facilitated our entrance from a horse-drawn carriage as well as our grand exit in busy downtown Houston. Amazing!
More than a year after our reception, we continue to receive kind comments about the beauty of our wedding day as well as requests for advice on vendors.

The reception in Picasso was beautiful, food and cakes phenomenal and service impeccable. They even facilitated our entrance from a horse-drawn carriage as well as our grand exit in busy downtown Houston. Amazing!
More than a year after our reception, we continue to receive kind comments about the beauty of our wedding day as well as requests for advice on vendors.
We cannot appreciate enough the perfect combination of professionalism, friendliness, and serious efficiency of the JW Marriott Downtown Houston whole team. Bravo to all!-

Because I, the bride, was not from the Houston area, many on my side were traveling from out of town. The JW Marriott Downtown was a perfect location for this as it allowed guests to stay at the venue in a dedicated room block, and they didn't have to rent a car to get from ceremony to reception, while still allowing guests to enjoy all that downtown has to offer. I worked with the event manager who was very responsive to all of my questions and helped me decide the best way to organize events and layouts for the weekend. She was very accommodating to my work schedule when scheduling planning meetings with me, and everything was very clearly laid out in all the paperwork. She also was able to communicate with my vendors on plans for delivery of items, etc. I also worked with the room block coordinator who made sure all of my guests felt welcome in their hotel. The hotel is very nice and clean, and has a really unique style! Having a plated meal was important to me but when searching for a venue, I was finding it difficult to do this within budget. At the JW Marriott, this was no problem at all, and the food got major compliments from the guests. The reception venue is so unique, not your typical hotel ballroom, as it serves as an art gallery during non-event times. This cut down on any extra decor that we needed for the reception space, and it added excellent backdrops for all the photos taken. The location of the JW Marriott really allows for good pictures, especially if you're trying to capture the city feel - I was so happy with how our pictures turned out, and all we had to do was walk less than a block in either direction to take them. Event planning contact was great, reservations group was not.
JW MARRIOTT
THE GOOD:
My husband and I loved the aesthetic of the JW Marriott. It was perfect for the feel we wanted for our wedding reception - classy, modern, black tie, but cozy space in terms of size. We worked with Gary Baumann for all food and logistics details for the event itself. Gary was so kind do us and really seemed interested in us as individual people. I appreciated the effort he made to get to know us. This was especially important to us because I was working full-time and going to grad school in the evenings while wedding planning so money and time were tight. It helped us that he could understand what we had to work with while we worked together.
What we liked about the venue was that we could do food, drinks, and venue all together (like any hotel would offer) but also that we could use their furniture to create seating spaces, the size was small enough to make people feel like they were in a full room, and, most importantly, that we could earn points!!!
The food was excellent. We had stations that were all different: salad bar, beef tenderloin, chicken tenders, sliders and fries, and mac and cheese action station. As the bride and groom, we got huge plates of everything but the mac and cheese. We didn’t realize it until they had already closed down the station and were totally bummed out. It was a hit!!
The JW also helped us with takeaway gifts. I didn’t want to do something that people would throw away so we asked them to quote us something that people could eat on the way home. We ended up doing boxes of 4 macarons for everyone – also a hit.
THE BAD:
As the bride and groom, we had a suite included in our contract when we agreed to hold our reception at the JW. We were kicked over to a different team who would handle this for us. We opted to also book rooms for our immediate family members. Everything was fine until the week of the wedding. I had called and asked if the hotel would be full and to see if I could get an early check in on Saturday, the day of my wedding, so I could get settled and ready earlier. The person I spoke with on the phone wasn’t sure and said he would call back. He later called back and left me a voicemail to tell me that it would be possible because the room they were going to put us in was not going to be occupied on Friday night. This meant that they would not have to turn the room over and I would be able to get in sooner on Saturday. OR SO I THOUGHT.
It turns out this person notated that I wanted to check in a day early rather than a few hours early like I was asking to do. I never received a confirmation on this change because of the way the reservation was created with the venue contract. I realized on the day of the wedding as our out of town guests started arriving that I was receiving emails about the JW looking forward to their visit but I wasn’t getting one for my own room. I was the bride!
The morning of the wedding, I called to get the status of our room. They couldn’t find us. How could they not find us? I had the confirmation number in hand. Turns out, because they thought we were supposed to arrive the day before and we didn’t, we were cancelled as a no-show. It was horrible. By this time, the hotel was full and I was not going to have a room at the venue hosting my wedding. Somehow the girl I was on the phone with made it work, for which I was grateful, but it ruined everything for me in the afternoon. I broke every tradition and cried to my fiancé and wedding planner and off for the rest of the time spent getting ready. I ended up in someone else’s room and had an everlasting reminder of this because they couldn’t figure out how to get this person’s name off the welcoming message of the TV despite MULTIPLE calls to get this done.
There was never an acknowledgement or apology for this from the JW. I fully admit that I could have been on me for not being more thorough or having too high of expectations but I can’t help but to wonder where the final check for the room reservation for the bride and groom for the only wedding on property that night was. We were very disappointed in this and have not been able to go back despite our desire to give it a special place in our hearts for future celebrations of our marriage.
