hello hello! like many folks, we canceled our wedding because of COVID. Jay was super flexible as we figured out our plans. We wound up having a super small 10 person wedding in our local community garden (everyone masked etc.) and Jay came to photograph that! He is ultra organized and helped us keep us on schedule and reminded us of the shots we had wanted to take. My parents couldn't be there but they were on Facetime and Jay was so great about trying to get them in the shots whenever possible. Also Jay was very safe! Masked the whole time and everything so if you are nervous about that don't be! The pictures turned out great and he really captured how DARN HAPPY we were to finally get married!!! Also he is very nice and friendly! And totally willing to go with the flow. I randomly asked him to take a picture of us with my avocado plants and Jay DID NOT BAT AN EYE. He was all "sure! stand here so you guys have better lighting etc." HIRE JAY! he is so nice and kind and will take nice pictures of you. -

We cannot say enough wonderful things about Jay, Chelsea, and Spencer! From the very beginning, we knew we were in the right hands. Jay actually photographed my in-laws' wedding, so we had seen firsthand how beautifully he works with families and how stunning the photos turned out. When we got engaged, there was no one else we even considered.
Our engagement shoot was so special. My husband and I aren't always the most natural in front of a camera, but Jay made us feel at ease and like ourselves, so that by the wedding day, we were relaxed.
On the wedding day, Jay and Chelsea were wonderful, and when we decided last minute to add videography for the formalities, Jay pulled strings to bring in Spencer, who was absolutely incredible. We are so grateful he made that happen. And somehow, we had our entire gallery back in less than a month. The whole process from delivery to downloading was seamless and stress-free.
Jay's professionalism is matched only by his personality. He's the kind of person who makes everyone feel comfortable. My bridesmaids were obsessed with him! He worked beautifully within the flow of our day, navigated all the family dynamics with grace, and collaborated seamlessly with our other vendors. -

We cannot say enough good things about Jay. He photographed our January wedding and was a complete professional while keeping things fun and light. He was extremely helpful with directing us as well as helping create and adhere to the day-of schedule. He was very flexible with all of the requests we made (some a little unusual) and helped us get every shot we wanted. Everything went so smoothly in large part due to Jay’s preparedness and skill. He worked well with the whole wedding team and my whole family and wedding party had positive things to say about Jay. We just got our sneak peak photos (very quickly!) and we are absolutely over the moon. We’ve never had the privilege of having such beautiful photos of us together, between the engagement photos he took and the actual wedding photos. He was also an absolute delight to have around. We cannot recommend Jay enough. -

Not trying to get him to raise his prices, haha, but Jay truly gave us the whole package above and beyond what's listed on his website. He not only helps you feel comfortable in front of the camera and gives you amazing photos, but also was incredibly helpful to me in brainstorming ideas and coming up with a timeline for the day of my wedding. He was also really great about prioritizing and adjusting for us as my husband HATES taking photos. Couldn't recommend him enough -

Jay is the absolute dream photographer. From the beginning he was wonderful to work with, getting to know us at our engagement session. He worked with a not-picture friendly groom who, by the end of the day, was totally comfortable with photography because of Jay’s comforting and fun disposition. Jay won the hearts of every single one of our guests. His communication was impeccable and coordinated with all vendors so the day ran smooth. Jay’s experience is evident in his pre-wedding planning as well as day-of professionalism. And finally- THE PHOTOS. They speak for themselves, his style and eye are perfect. Jay was simply amazing to work with. I had no idea where to start on a timeline for my wedding day and Jay made it so easy– he mapped out our day for us perfectly. We can’t recommend Jay enough. We’re not usually a very photogenic couple, but the pictures turned out so beautiful. He captured all the emotions and moments perfectly. He’s very knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about his work. He responded very quickly to our emails. He was so easy to work with, and super flexible. (I don't know how many times we had to change plans, but he was so accommodating.) It was raining all week before our wedding day, and although we’re grateful it turned out to be sunny, we have no doubts Jay would have done everything he could to get those beautiful shots. Those teaser pics came out so beautiful, we couldn’t wait for the whole thing, so it was a great surprise that it came earlier than expected. 1000000000 stars. -

Amazing, Stunning, Incredible!
Jay was an absolute dream to work with, and his photographs are STUNNING. We met with Jay about 9 months ahead of our wedding, and from the first meeting we knew he was the photographer for us. He was very professional, well organized, and all-around fabulous to work with! Having never been part of a photoshoot, my now-husband and I weren't sure what to expect at our engagement photo session, but Jay put us at ease and made us feel comfortable through the whole thing - and the results were GORGEOUS! The same is true for the wedding, the photos came out incredible and all of our family and friends loved Jay! He took group shots & family pics for our guests, took some of the most incredible candids we've ever seen, and somehow also had time to take fabulous photos of all our flowers and decor! He always finds ways to take a photo to the next level and the results are incredible. Jay is truly an artist and we can't say enough great things about him. Highly, highly, highly recommend!! -

A literal dream
We knew from the first interview that Jay was our guy. We were planning a wedding for September 2024 and within one meeting he knew details like our “sunset time” for wedding day photo ops and had an entire itinerary drafted to help keep the day/photos organized.
Talk about flexible!! We had some personal circumstances arise and had very last minute decided to turn our scheduled engagement shoot into an elopement and Jay was so amazing and responsive.
Jay is a true artist. He was so dedicated in ensuring that the “vibe” we wanted was achieved- and while we’re not necessarily a shy couple, he knew just the direction to give to ensure we got the romantic photos every couple dreams about.
Jay is an absolute treasure. If you have the opportunity to allow him to turn your wedding day into a masterpiece, do it. Full speed ahead.

There is so much to we are grateful to Jay for—he was at the core of making the happiest day of our lives possible! From the outset, we noticed Jay’s positive attitude, enthusiasm, and genuine interest in getting to know us and work with us. He went out of his way to recommend florists and makeup artists specifically experienced with doing Asian bridal makeup, when I mentioned offhand that that had been challenging to find. He was incredibly flexible with my husband and I’s timeline during the planning process, and also helped us tremendously with a ninth-hour search for a videographer. He took the time to do a beautiful engagement session with us just days before the wedding, which helped us get comfortable in front of the camera, and sent us pics the VERY next day!!! And on our wedding day, Jay was such a centering and comforting presence for us and the wedding party. We were struck by how well he collaborated with the other vendors, how he was familiar with our venue yet adaptable to day of-schedule shifts, and how he gave his 200% to capture moments we will remember forever thanks to his talented photography. His generosity of spirit, time, and heart all make him an exceptional photographer—and human being—and we feel beyond thankful for him!!! -

We booked Jay to do our engagement photos, and we enjoyed the experience and the photos so much that we knew we wanted him for our wedding as well! Jay Zhang is one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. He is very funny and a spectacular photographer. The first time we met, I immediately felt comfortable with him, which I do not often feel when meeting people for the first time, and it is a really special thing for a wedding photographer!!
He assuaged all sorts of worries and concerns we had throughout the whole wedding planning experience. We just looked through all of the photos he took on the wedding day and the album is full of gems and beautiful memories. Highly recommend Jay!!!! -

But more than that, Jay is:
1. Creative - Jay accommodated all our ideas and built upon them with suggestions and vision. After I had told Jay that my husband’s and my story had a lot to do with bridges and the bike trail, Jay had ideas. We had our engagement photos taken on the Hudson River Pedestrian Bridge and the adjoining bike path in downtown Albany. Jay was open to riverfront, bridge, park, and skyline photos, and he was always prepared when the scene was right.
2. Flexible - Jay is approachable, yet professional. He voiced concerns when I told him my husband and I wanted to stick to tradition by not doing a “first look”, knowing that our couples photos wouldn’t start until after the sun had set (our ceremony was at 5, and the sunset in NY in December is around 4:15). Jay was incredibly patient and responsive as we shifted the schedule and shot list around. Jay covered everything on my shot list and then some, and he was quick to post our photos on his website, which has been secure and easy for my family to use. The engagement and wedding day photo teasers on Instagram and Facebook were also an exciting bonus for us and our “fans”!
3. Everywhere! - It amazed everyone that Jay was the only photographer working our wedding. Jay managed to photograph all the special moments between my husband and I and our families. And in between those moments, he would capture photos of all our guests and everything in between. The engagement and wedding day photos were plentiful, yet thought out and unique. The photos were also a breeze to take, especially given my large and often distracted family (lolz). Jay made us smile even when we weren’t taking photos - he’s good-natured and simply fun to be around! -

With so many options for photographers, it was definitely overwhelming at first. Then we came across Jay. The way he captures every moment and makes everyone comfortable ( he even brought hand warmers for my bridal party) because it was cold in December! We booked Jay to be our wedding photographer in the spring of 2021 and every interaction we had through planning our engagement photo shoot (9/21) to our wedding day itself (10/22) was professional, personable, and helpful. Jay met with us on video chat to discuss what we were looking for, was easy to connect with via email, and responsive to our wishes. We especially wanted to work with a photographer who was skilled at photographing diverse communities and body types - and Jay hit the mark. Not only did we leave our wedding with beautiful photos of us as a couple, our family, friends, and guests were also captured well. We received our engagement and wedding photos back in a very reasonable timeframe, and Jay was responsive and helpful when I wanted a couple photos adjusted. Jay is the BEST!
Jay was so amazing to work with. From our engagement photos to our wedding, he made us feel so comfortable. He's incredibly organized, responsive, and has an amazing creative eye. The day of the wedding he showed up early, helped ensure we were running on time, graciously fed our dog treats while trying to get her photo, and was just so comforting to have around. We also were so fortunate to have Kristin as our second shooter with Jay, who was just as awesome. Reading the other reviews of Jay, they're all so accurate that I don't know what else to add, other than, if you're considering booking with him, DO IT. Jay photographed our December 2020 wedding, which meant he dealt with way too many changes to plans and a very stressed out bride! However, he was extremely helpful through every change, had multiple extra phone calls to discuss best options, and provided an overall calming and experienced perspective.
Best of all, our photos are AMAZING! I seriously can't say enough good things about Jay. As part of our wedding package, engagement photos were included. My husband and I know Jay personally from college, but even so, the engagement photos were a great way to get acclimated with being photographed and feeling more comfortable in front of the camera. He's also done head shots for me before (and hopefully will again soon), and those were fantastic as well.

We initially booked Jay for our wedding because in our search for a photographer we searched many photographer's websites, and we found that the people in Jay's photos looked so natural and not forced. Their smiles were genuine, they looked comfortable and weren't doing silly poses. All these things absolutely held true in our own photos. We could not have been happier with how our photos came out. We got the photos back very quickly, within a month of the event. There were almost 2,500 photos total for us to choose from. Jay made us look like models. We now have the problem of having to choose which ones to frame and blow up. There are too many good ones!
Jay also did our engagement shoot back in 2019 at the Brooklyn Bridge and surrounding area. Those also came out amazing and we used a photo for our Save The Date. Also of note, we had a snafu with the sparkler send-off we had planned. Someone forgot the sparklers, but the venue had about 20 leftover. Jay suggested 20 guests in a semi-circle around us, which came out great. He was resourceful and creative with his shots.
In addition to the amazing quality of the photos, Jay was just a pleasure to deal with. He always had time for us and is such a great person. He took charge and was the driving force behind the entire wedding timeline. Even though I'm sure he's dealing with 100 weddings on his docket at once he made us feel special. We couldn't imagine our wedding without Jay. He was such an integral part and we loved all of his work. -

A Wonderful Human Being Who Also Happens to Be An Amazing Photographer
My wife and I hired Jay to be our photographer for our wedding and it couldn't have been a more enjoyable experience. Jay is an awesome person who makes the sometimes awkward experience of posing for photos super fun and easy. The quality of his work is fantastic. He knows how to play with the environment to capture both sweet and intimate moments as well grand and bombastic displays of love. It's incredibly impressive. I first met Jay when he photographed my best friend's wedding, and I immediately felt like I connected with him on a soul-deep level. Jay is so warm, kind, friendly, approachable... in your first conversation with him, you'll feel like you've known him forever! After working with him for that event, I immediately knew I would ask him to photograph my wedding. Sure enough, when my husband and I got engaged, Jay was the first person I called, and he was incredible to work with throughout our entire process! COVID significantly impacted our wedding planning and brought high levels of stress to us, but speaking with Jay always brought a level of calm and security. No matter the obstacles we faced, he encouraged us that we would be just fine and that he would do his very best to capture the beauty of our day, regardless of how it looked! Jay conquered all obstacles with a smile and remained positive despite the difficulties we experienced. The day of our wedding, as soon as Jay arrived, it was like everything was right in the world. He was kind to and communicative with all of our vendors, working well with each of them behind the scenes so my husband and I were never bothered. He stuck to our timeline to maximize our time with our guests (a timeline, mind you, that he edited many times without complaint!), and efficiently moved through all photographs that we wanted with family and friends. His artistic vision shined through in every picture he took, and throughout the day he shared the most gorgeous shots with us; every time he showed us that camera screen, it was so exciting and comforting! We have had many friends and family comment about how friendly and approachable Jay was in comparison to other wedding photographers they have worked with, and we couldn't agree more! Our photos were delivered to us within 4 weeks of our big day, and getting those photographs was comparable to opening the best gift you've ever received. Each photo took our breath away and we could not be any more satisfied with Jay's high quality of work! If you are a couple who wants a professional, knowledgable, talented, unique, kind, friendly, AMAZING wedding photographer, then Jay Zhang is your person! We had our engagement shoot with Jay and I could not speak more highly of our experience with him!! We were both somewhat nervous/new to the experience and Jay was exactly the right balance of reassuring and directive. He was an incredible photographer and an even more lovely person! I also so appreciated his carefulness & consideration around social distancing, as we did our photos outside during the pandemic. Lastly, I cannot say enough how much we appreciated Jay’s support and willingness to talk through being intentional around race, queerness, and representation of both in photography and beyond.
In terms of the actual pictures, there was a SUPER quick turnaround on our teaser photos as well as the entire set of photos from our shoot. We actually got our full gallery a week from the shoot! The pictures were stunning, it was a blast to work with Jay, and we couldn’t be more happy with our choice. -

Jay was phenomenal to work with! He did our site-based engagement photos- helped us choose the right location for our shoot, and was prompt and well prepared. The turnaround time was so fast- we got them right away! He was fun and had lots of great ideas for poses which was helpful because we were nervous at first. He was also willing to go with the flow when we had ideas of our own! Jay was kind and helpful and the quality of his work is supreme.

A Guy Who Gets It
Jay was a real pleasure to work with. We're not fussy people and wanted a day that was fun and festive, but straightforward without being too involved, staged, or affected. He took the time to thoroughly explain any hesitations we had with the process (e.g. "Do we really need/want engagement photos?" Answer: Yeah, we did, as awkward weirdos when anyone points a camera our way). Jay helped clarify the wherefores and whys, and he was responsive to our vision of a wedding day. Jay also understands the importance of diversity, representation, and visibility in the wedding industry, things my husband and I found very much missing in other vendors. Side note: Not part of his job at ALL, but he was a huge help on the day of the wedding when my husband forgot his dress shirt in our apartment. Huzzah for teamwork, landlords, and friends! -

beyond expectations
Jay made things happen for us, in addition to capturing the moments. We knew he had a good eye & liked his unique perspective on photography. We were so blessed to have him on our team.
When we asked about a photo booth, he made it happen. At the last minute, when we asked aboit videoing our vows, he made it happen (wireless microphones and all). When we asked for a group shot of all guests, at the end of our ceremony... you guessed it. Yes, he made that happen too.
He was the consumate professional throughout the year+ long planning process and communicated with us frequently. We are grateful to have had him and his team capture the moments. -

We could not have been more satisfied having chosen Jay Zhang for our wedding photography! Everyone has commented how beautiful our photos are and how friendly and non-intrusive the photographers were during the entire event! We had 125 people at our Manhattan wedding, and there are multiple pictures of every single guest. Really amazing how thorough he and his assistant were in capturing everyone so throughly! Jay has a warm, friendly demeanor and really makes you feel comfortable. He has great ideas for shots and always welcomes your own ideas for whimsical shots or otherwise. It's also so nice that he includes an engagement shooting prior to your wedding -- it gives you the opportunity to get to know him and his style and feel more comfortable for the big day. My husband had found jay through a mutual friend of his and what an amazing find. He was on point from the first meeting to the engagement shoot right through the wedding, he even brought an emergenxy pack of things we might of forgot ( and i did forget lol) the day of. Also we were able to get all the formal pics done before the ceremony so we actually has time to enjoy cocktail hour. The pictures we got were also so beautiful and breathtaking, he also does a mini blog the day right after for impatient people like me lol. He really was a one of a kind find and not crazy over priced. Definatly would use him again in a heartbeat! -

I usually don't like to have my picture taken, but Jay made us feel very comfortable in front of the camera. Jay worked so well with our natural settings and we loved his ideas and creativity. Jay is responsive, creative and provides exceptional value for money spent. His personal approach combined with professional results definitely puts him far above many of the others in his industry. We had a very fast paced lively wedding and from the moment we signed our contract Jay stepped up and managed every detail along the way, including multiple locations, 200+ guests and a very demanding list of family photos. His creativity, enthusiasm, and warmth instantly came across and actually made us feel more excited and at ease with our unconventional event. Anusheh Sent on 12/23/2017Jay was the perfect choice for our wedding photographer. He captured the most beautiful moments for us. He is really easy to work with, very personable and friendly. I'm really awkward when it comes to taking pictures and he was there to tell me exactly what to do with my hands, arms, feet, chin, etc! The night goes by in such a blur so it is so important to have a talented photographer. He was organized and timely and made sure we got all the pictures we wanted to get. I highly recommend him!

I had seen Jay's work before and was always impressed and he certainly didn't disappoint for us. Our engagement shoot was lovely. he was very sweet and suggested ideas we never would have thought of. Our wedding day went by in a flash and thankfully we have jay's amazing pictures of both of us getting ready, candid shots, first glance, family, ceremony, and reception were all so lovely. I truly enjoy the fact that he really seemed to enjoy capturing our special day and capture he did. Everything from my mother in law signing our guest book to the jewelry I wore that day. No detail was overlooked by Jay. Even when it was lightly raining he held an umbrella for me and then drove me from our fancy before pictures back to the wedding hotel! I am so thankful for Jay and our pictures and would glad recommend him without hesitation!

He put a set together for us in a beautiful album and we got digital copies of all the pictures as well. Highly recommend! -

We met Jay while his was photographing a family members wedding and were so enamored with his work, personability and professionalism. Throughout our engagement and wedding photos, Jay made us feel comfortable and confident; it was like we were just hanging out with a friend (who was actually documenting some of our most intamate and personal moments). I am beyond thrilled with how our wedding photos turned out, Jay’s work is something we will treasure for the rest of our lives. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Jay and can’t wait to have him photograph the next milestones of our lives.

So when we decided to get married there was no question about it we wanted him to do our wedding also. He went above and beyond and helped me with everything even the things that had nothing to do with the photography part which wasn't surprising at all. He put as much thought into our wedding day as we did and was constantly checking in with me to see how everything was going throughout the planning process. We love Jay and his work and would reccomend him to any couple looking for a photographer for any occasion. -

I would 100% not recommend working with Jay Zhang if you are having an outdoor wedding. I got married at the end of August and it has taken me 5 months to write this review because it's such a touchy subject, but I feel it is important to warn other potential brides that they will be disappointed. I was and still am extremely upset with my photos. They make me wish I hadn't hired a photographer, or just made relative take some photos on my phone. I haven't shared any of them and cannot hang up the ones my mom framed for me because I hate looking at them. I think his blog and instagram posts are deceiving too, because many of them are indoors or have better exposure levels. The last post I saw was a recap of the “22 great weddings he covered in 2018,” of which my wedding was not listed. I wonder how many other couples were unhappy with their photos.
The specific issues with the photos are:
-lighting and exposure
-photo composition
-subject placement
Lighting: It doesn’t seem like he knows how to use his camera in the daylight. The lighting indoors was just fine, but almost every photo outdoors was over exposed, to the point that half the photo is white. The sky and lake in the background is way too bright and distracts from the photo's subjects. There are shadows on our faces, the lighting is not flattering at all. We had a beautiful, puffy white cloud, blue sky day, (we were so lucky) but it looks like a overcast, dreary day. Not at all representative to how beautiful the day was. I uploaded a cell phone photo a guest had sent me at ceremony time for reference.
Photo composition:
Jay apparently doesn't know how or won't put in the effort to crop his photos so you have a decent composition. The straight line of our arch was never horizontal. For our portraits, Jay placed us off centered with respect to the arch and it looks terrible. Cropping is easy for me to adjust, but it just shows you that he probably doesn’t really post process the photos much.
Subject placement:
Like I mentioned before, the off center with respect to the arch was an issue, but he also loves backlight photographs. Every armature photographer knows backlight photos makes for a dark subject and an unflattering photo in general. It's still true, even though he things it's not. He had us do parents first look in front of a window in a dark room. It looks awful.
When I asked him to fix these issues, he allowed me to fix 50-60 photos (I would have chosen 120), and I really appreciate that he was willing to try to work with me. He was unable to make them look like they had natural lighting. Adding blue back to she skies was done poorly, with choppy lines and unnatural lighting. The water was still glowing. I appreciate that he tried to work with me to fix the issue, so I won't share those because the additional work was done as a favor and not in the additional contract.
I would not recommend Jay if you are planning to have an outdoor wedding with beautiful weather. He might succeed in a winter setting, with lots of white snow, but his photography does not belong with outdoor summer scenery. Frankly, I would hire a friend with a phone before I would hire Jay again.
Pros:
I did like how Jay ran the operations in his business. His website is easy to navigate and use. He is easy to talk with and work with, and he was very organized on wedding day. I do like that I have the digital images. Quite flexible to our requests. We did get some great photos, but every ceremony and family portrait photo is so bad I can't even look at them without feeling sad and regretful.
