Clerks and owner were very helpful and accessible. The owner, Madeline, is very particular about making sure everything is pressed, clean and ready. We purchased jewelry, invitations, thank-you notes, cake napkins, shoes, and all suits and all dresses (except mother of the bride/groom dresses) here. We were very pleased with all our products and the service we received.

The owner at The Colony Shop, along with her granddaughter, are so attentive to each little detail and make the task of outfitting the entire wedding party so simple. They also worked so well with the young kids, making trying on flower girl dresses a fun and unforgettable experience for my nieces! We all left very pleased!

I love my Mori Lee bridal gown that I ordered from the Colony Shop. It is a small shop and has a good team. However, they are often busy and aren't solely focused on the bride. I had several frustrating experiences. :(

Do not get wedding attire here!

I am writing this in regards to my experience as the maid of honor of my mother in laws wedding. This business lacks not only communication but isn’t organized at all. Here’s the list of issues that have occurred before the wedding day:

1. bridesmaid dresses
the bride told me that I needed to just go into the shop and get fitted for my dress. I was not informed that I was gonna have to pay a deposit when getting sized. I called the bride and asked if the last bridesmaid had to when she got sized and she said no. which I couldn’t leave until it was paid so I paid out of my own pocket for it.

2. My husband got fitted for his suit days before the wedding and they said to come pick it up on thursday which would have been two days before it. My husband works night shifts so he sleeps through the day he woke up early to get his suit only to find out that they couldn’t get it in til the morning before which is irritating.

3. Day of the wedding one of the brides maid dresses zippers broke off when zipping because the stitching was done poorly that we had to pin the back of her dress and also had to pin my dress because the bust was too big. (thank god for her long hair and my bouquet!)

these altercations almost made the bride and bridesmaids late to the wedding!!

Worst experience

I would never recommend the colony shop in fort Madison to anybody. Especially somebody who would need a tux for a wedding with young children in it. They do not accommodate for the resizing and claim your child is built bigger than another child, told my child to his face that he was acting like a little girl & a baby when he was whining about how uncomfortable the shirt is, etc. I’m sorry no child is built the same. Than refused a refund on the shirt claiming that it’s all one price when it was the same price as an adult! Downgrading a child in front of a mother when you’re supposed to be a business is something I don’t find respectful at all. Just go somewhere else.
They called last Friday saying the tux we’re in, I went in Saturday when they opened to try on Hank tux. They said they were going to OVERNIGHT IT. called Monday, nope. Called Tuesday, nope. Closed on Wednesday. Thursday it’s in, we go in as soon as open but still not right. Wedding is Friday at 4pm. TOMORROW.
