About

Originally named Elephant Bazaar, Lucy the Elephant was built by a real estate speculator who owned a great many parcels of land at the Jersey Shore. In order to attract visitors and potential buyers, James V. Lafferty built a six-story, elephant-shaped building as a novelty amusement. He patented his idea, ensuring that his structure would remain a unique piece of architecture. Eventually a popular hotel business was built around the structure. Presidents and royalty came from around the world to stay at the neighboring Elephant Hotel and climb the winding stairs up to Lucy’s howdah.

I am incredibly happy we decided to have our ceremony at Lucy. It was a unique experience that not many people can say they had. We got so much great feedback from our guests.

Rich was great to work with. He was very responsive to all my emails and questions. They pretty much let us do whatever we wanted to the space. The night before at the rehearsal, we put up an arch decorated in flowers. We tied ribbons and bows on all of the railings etc. that were able to stay up the next day during the tours until our ceremony.

I felt like the price was very reasonable considering they shut down the tours for pretty much as long as you ask them too. Also, its a non-profit. All the proceeds go to help keep Lucy open. Not to mention its tax deductible!

If you decide to have your wedding at Lucy, just remember this place does not have a wedding coordinator! You definitely need to remember to designate someone to be your person in charge of making sure everything goes off without a hitch (music, seating of guests, walking down the aisle timing etc).
