When it came time to choosing our rings, we had a bear of a time finding anything we liked. We initially looked at the mainstream jewelry stores in the Milwaukee area, which was a complete waste of time. Milwaukee is the seventh level of hell for retail in the first place, and as a gay male couple, no mainstream jeweler had the slightest interest in serving our needs. Wedding sets? Only “hers-and-his”, with the “his” being some boring gold band that looked like it came from the claw pick-up game at Wal-Mart.

We wanted something of good quality and unusual, eye-catching without being gaudy. We wanted our rings to be similar enough to look like they belong together, and yet not identical, each being unique. In other words, like us! After an extensive online search, we found our answer with Jewelry by Johan. Located in St. Paul, MN, they weren’t exactly next door, but close enough to make a fun weekend trip that also allowed us to reconnect with some old friends.

We met with Brittani for our consultation. She brought out about 30 different rings of a wide variety of styles and materials to get some idea what we wanted. She also had another 5 that we picked out from the website, which helped to narrow our choices down. They have a truly amazing selection of stones, metals, even woods, dinosaur bones, meteorites… the sky is the limit in designing something that’s completely custom. We ordered tri-banded rings with lapis lazuli, meteorite, and a turquoise mosaic for my husband, and lapis lazuli, turquoise, and turquoise mosaic for me. We chose gold for the separating bands, and titanium bodies for durability. We were also given plastic sizer bands to wear home to be absolutely sure of the sizes.

Most importantly, Brittani made us feel welcome and respected, and priced our rings as a set. When we received our rings, they fit perfectly, and we were absolutely delighted with them. After all, why shouldn’t we be? We’re going to be wearing these for the rest of our lives!
