History

Founded in 1900 as the Chico Warm Spring Hotel, the resort originally welcomed miners searching for wealth in Emigrant Gulch. Owners Percie and William Knowles quickly recognized the property’s potential, expanding the hotel from 10 to 20 rooms and adding features such as a dining room, entertainment, and a horse-drawn carriage service. Continued success led to a 60-room establishment.

After William’s passing, Percie transformed the property into a health spa, partnering with Dr. Townsend to construct a 20-room hospital wing. During peak periods, deluxe canvas tents were erected to accommodate overflow guests. Following its auction in 1948, Chico Hot Springs changed hands several times, but its rich legacy and distinctive charm have endured -solidifying its place as one of Montana’s most treasured retreats.
