Throughout the planning process at this resort my wedding planner, who has years of experience as a destination wedding planner in the Caribbean and Mexico, repeatedly said she had "never seen anything like this before."
-The resort changed the contract on us multiple times (changing terms, adding new conditions and fees, not honoring what was paid for.) On top of that, they never sent us our certificate of marriage! I found out later that other resorts generally have much more detailed contracts.
-Our family and guests had a terrible time making reservations. Our assigned reservations agent, Mrs. Baez, was awful. She forced guests to book 7 months out, at inflated rates. She couldn't even get our wedding guests the same rates that they were finding on Barcelo's own website. She did not group guests together at the resort, despite being provided a list of all guests and reservation info. She had guests getting assigned to rooms all over the resort and then getting relocated. The bride and groom did not receive Club Premium status for the wedding, despite having the most expensive wedding package. Guests had to make an international call to reserve rooms (no 1-800 # at the resort) or had to email credit card information to the DR.
-There is a $1000 outside vendor fee. The resort's preferred vendors are overpriced and sub standard. The onsite decorator wanted 35% more than our outside vendor. The DJ/MC service used by the resort was expensive and failed to follow directions, which somewhat ruined the reception.
--There is a major language barrier, creating a lot of confusion and extra correspondence to get anything done. Try getting hair and makeup done using hand signals and photos only...
-The supervisor of the wedding department, Mrs. Gattas, is one of the most arrogant and unprofessional people I have ever had to deal with. She, and many others on the staff at this resort, do not understand basic customer service principles. It shows.
