Our Story

How it started…

We met in September 2005 when we were both assigned as designers and attended a read-through of the show. He was doing lights and I, costumes. Over the next two years, we ended up designing five shows together which we didn’t realize until the fall of 2007 which is when we started talking and hanging out more outside of design work. We had both just come out of long term relationships, I had just suffered a very traumatic death in the family and we bonded very quickly over these events.

We started spending more and more time together outside of our theatre world which is something I didn’t do very often since I was in Graduate school. More often than not, I found myself going over to his apartment almost every single day after classes because I felt relief getting out of my apartment where I had spent my time wallowing from the death in my family. Tyler became my breath of fresh air. When he wasn’t around I wanted him there and when he was there I didn’t want him to leave.

From the start of the relationship, very few people knew about us and did us the favor of keeping it quiet. We had our personal reasons for the big secret. It wasn’t revealed until we had been together for almost two months and even then it spread very slowly but was kept on the down low [for the most part] for the rest of the school year.

We ended up graduating together in May 2008; he got his Bachelors and I got my Masters. For the summer, I was back home in Austin working while he remained in Oklahoma but we spaced out a few visits in the couple of months and then ended up moving to New York City together where we currently live with a friend of ours.

The Proposal…

For Memorial Day weekend, Tyler and I flew out to Oklahoma to be with his family since his brother was shipping off to boot camp on the 27th. On Saturday the 23rd we went to a graduation party for one of his cousins but took a separate car from him parents since we were meeting up with some OU friends later that evening.

We left around 7ish and went to Reeves Park where we had some photos of us taken last year. We went straight to the tire swing and just enjoyed out time there together swinging and spinning. Tyler got up for a moment to let me adjust and we were doing our usual “I love you more” battle (I know, I know… gross) and as he was saying it for probably the third time, he was getting down on one knee and handing me a little maroon velvet box. I was still in some denial that it was even happening that it wasn’t really real until he opened the box and asked me to marry him.

Was I surprised? More than you know! Did I cry? Yes! Tears filled my eyes and I said “I love you” immediately followed with “Yes, of course!” I think I cried for a solid 10 minutes as I was calling people to tell them the news.

Afterwards, we went to meet up with our friends, where I had to keep my left hand hidden (often in my back pocket) until everyone arrived so we could tell them the news. It was somewhat torturous over the 3 hours but once the news was out, everyone was shocked and excited.

Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

The Ring

My oh-so-wonderful fiance tells me that after searching high and low for weeks along with upsetting a few jewelry vendors on the way, he ended up having the ring made because he couldn't find THE ring.

The stone is 3/4 carat diamond in a platnum setting with 2 round cut diamonds on each side. The band is white-gold with 10 additional smaller diamonds. To top it off... on the underside there are 4 diamond chips in the band. It's absolutely beautiful in every way and is better than anything I could ever ask for.

Needless to say... I love it!

Our Wedding Plans

So far we have gotten a lot done in passing months.

In June I tried on and ordered my dress from Kleifeld Bridal here in Manhattan. It was the third one I tried on and I knew there was nothing else I wanted to see. This was definitely the dress and I can't wait to put it on again! I also got the veil and tiara (which is more of a headband headpiece.

In July we met with our caterer who is a family friend and the Executive Chef for
2 Dine 4 in Austin, Texas. I've had his food many times and they have amazing dishes! He then got us in touch with a venue that he's worked with many times call the Wild Onion Ranch. After my fiance and I got to take a look at it we both fell in love and even though we always said we wouldn't do anything outdoors for our wedding because of the Texas heat, this location change our minds immediately! It's family owned and ran and they are wonderful people to work with.

So, we sealed the deal with our ceremony and reception venue which is on sight. The ceremony will take place in the hall provided with seating for up to 250 people complete with an altar FULL of various sizes of beeswax candles that will be lit. There are sliding doors on each side of the hall the people will exit through after the ceremony and the hall will be turned into the food hall.

We have already designed and ordered the wedding cake and have yet to decide on the Groom's. The bottom tier of the cake is square and will be Italian cream with coconut, the second tier is a hexagon and will be vanilla with strawberry filling and the top tier is round and will be white bread with raspberry filling. The icing will be ivory with golden/orange fondant leaves all over it connected by chocolate brown "branches" and there will be royal blue pearl trim around each of the layers.

We have decided to collect and gather music and do the reception iTunes style. I'm going to pay someone to just maintain the run of the a laptop as needed throughout the night in case something were to go wrong. DJ's just cost too much.

October and November are the months for bridesmaid dresses!

Our Planning Experience

Start early! Start early! Start early! It's never too early to plan! Never put anything off. I am a HUGE procrastinator but I have never been more on my game than I have been with this wedding and I am glad I did. You'd be surprised how many little things start popping up everywhere as the ball gets rolling... because you can't freeze time!

Our Advice

Try and be open minded about everything. There have been several things over the course of planning that we have said we wouldn't do but somehow ended up liking the idea after all and doing it.

Examples: I said I would design and make my own dress... I bought it. I said it would never be lace, strapless or have a train... it has all three. We both said we would never have our wedding or reception outdoors... the wedding is indoors but the reception is not...
There are just somethings you find out over the course of time that work against all odds and I say if you feel in your heart it's right, then go with it.
