Words can not express the fabulous experience that I had at University and Whist Club on my wedding day. The coordinator Margaret was absolutely wonderful. My guests loved the look and feel of the mansion. They thought it was very charming and intimate. I would definitely recommend the Whist Club for any event.

Margaret was extremely supportive and responsive to our needs. Everything worked out perfectly on our wedding day thanks to the team at U and Whist. All of our guests were very happy with the venue, food and drinks. I highly recommend the venue if you are marrying in Wilmington.

The Whist was the perfect venue for our wedding! Margaret was really responsive and helpful throughout the process. Margaret was not able to be at the wedding, but Sara made sure the reception was running smoothly. The food was delicious, the service was great, and the venue and grounds are beautiful!

We got married at the Whist Club April 2023 and we couldn’t be happier with our choice. We had to postpone from our original date in 2022 due to pandemic restrictions. Margaret and the Whist Club were so accommodating around that whole situation. Margaret was a pleasure to work with every step of the way and really does everything she can to make the day run smooth. The outdoor ceremony site is beautiful. We were lucky yo have gorgeous weather. But knowing we had the carriage house as a backup space took away any stress about potential bad weather. The getting ready suites were both fantastic. We had no complaints and couldn’t have asked for anything better. The food was amazing and we’re still getting compliments on it from our guests. I feel like the Whist Club is the hidden gem of wedding venues. I don’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

Getting married at the Whist Club was a great decision on our part. Margaret was very attentive and was with us every step of the way. Leading up to the big day, she was able to give me advice as well as vendors that worked with the venue often, saving me a lot of time online looking at reviews. The day of the wedding itself went off without a hitch. The weather was perfect and having the ceremony outdoors was beautiful in the garden. The food was delicious and we heard many compliments from our guests. (Side note, we also had our rehearsal dinner here; highly recommend having it all in one place for simplicity's sake. Their food for that was amazing as well. Try the crab cakes! Overall, most of our guests were impressed with the wedding and reception, which is exactly what we were going for. I highly recommend Whist if you're looking for a reasonably priced venue that looks outstanding. Service here was top notch!

After spending a long time looking for venues, touring several, and not feeling like we found the one, that quickly changed when we first visited the University and Whist Club. When driving up, seeing the beautiful gardens gave us the first clue that we found our venue. The Tilton Mansion is not only historical, but looks like a castle from the outside. As an added bonus, The Carriage House is a great alternative location for a ceremony if your guest count allows for it. We lucked out in being able to have our ceremony there since it rained on our wedding day. The fact that the venue includes so much, such as floral centerpieces, cake, open bar, a wedding coordinator, and more is very helpful. I knew I did not want to have to rent tables and chairs and I was glad to have chosen a venue that not only includes so much but is also very reasonably priced. Margaret, the wedding coordinator, was great to work with. She suggested we visit the venue on a day that it was set up for a wedding, which was a great idea. She was wonderful to work with from start to finish. Everyone at the Whist Club was very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and everyone told us what a great wedding it was. We would highly recommend this venue to other couples!

We highly recommend The University and Whist Club for your wedding venue! We wanted an all-inclusive venue to cut down on some of the planning effort for our special day. When we came across the Whist we were floored, there were great spots for pictures, areas for bride/groom + wedding party to get ready, distinct areas for different parts of the wedding, spacious reception area, and a delicious variety of food that can accommodate different diets. Margaret was instrumental in helping us plan for wedding. She’s planned numerous weddings and she guided us through various ideas to find what was best for our wedding.

The Whist provided all the tables, chairs, linens, flatware, food, beverages, and staff for our event. They work with multiple vendors in the area to augment what they provide. For example, we hired the following vendors: DJ (District DJ), Photographer/Videographer (Frederick and Reid Photography), Alpacas with handlers (Illusion Ranch Alpacas), Baker (Deserts by Dana), and a Florist (M. Coty). With those few vendors, in addition to the venue, planning was much smoother - you can choose from their rolodex or find your own.

As it pertained to the venue, we heard from all of our guests about how much they loved the venue and the quality + warmth (where appropriate) of the food. As for the people behind the scenes, we talked to plenty of staffers and everyone was incredibly nice. The bartender, chefs, and wait staff did a great job.

Not having to jump from location to location for the ceremony and reception offers great peace of mind. Not needing to coordinate with rental companies and caterers for the reception is another weight off your shoulders. You may hear the cliché, “There was so much going on that we didn’t enjoy our wedding.” Through planning and coordination with Margaret, we got to enjoy every minute of our wedding with all our guests. It was an experience we’ll always remember!

The University & Whist Club was the perfect venue for our wedding! On a beautiful September afternoon we were married under the outside pergola surrounded by our friends and family. Without delay, we marched to the beat from our bagpiper to enjoy cocktails and delicious appetizers in the beautiful Hunt and Delaware rooms. The staff hand delivered appetizers making sure the busy bride and groom were taken care of. We progressed to the dinning room where dinner was served with a smile. But our favorite was the dancing in the beautiful ballroom! We performed our wedding dance under the sparkle of the crystal chandeliers then were greeted with champagne to celebrate. Working with the Whist Staff was so fun and easy throughout the whole process We liked them so much we even had our rehearsal dinner their the night before our wedding. It was perfect. Thank you University & Whist Club!

The University and Whist Club made my wedding day dreams come true! The food was phenomenal, the venue was breathtaking, and the staff was excellent! Margaret was so lovely. She was so accommodating to any of my requests and just a pleasure to work with. Even with unexpected events, Margaret and her staff handled everything without skipping a beat. I still have guests telling me it was the best wedding they have ever been to!

I had my wedding and reception at the Whist, and I could not be happier with that decision. Margaret was so helpful in giving a tour of the venue and answering all my questions. She was very responsive throughout the entire process and made it so easy to plan the rest of my wedding. The Whist is beautiful and has such a history. The Bridal room was so nice and they provided up snacks and drinks for everyone. There was even a groom's room for all the guys to hang out in. It was so easy to plan the meals because the Whist will do a tasting with you beforehand. Day of, Margaret was so helpful in making sure everything went smoothly. 100% recommend the Whist as your Wedding venue. 10/10

Margaret and the team accommodated with our extra ethinic decoration request and made it a dream wedding for us. Appreciate the flexibility and the efforts.

We had our rehearsal dinner here, and it was absolutely stunning. The atmosphere is nothing but class, with fantastic cocktails and absolutely amazing food. The staff are extremely cordial and attentive, and it was the perfect place for us to relax with our families and friends before the wonderful hurly-burly of our wedding day!

We can't thank Margaret and the Whist Club enough for how unbelievably awesome our wedding and reception was. So many of our guests told us how wonderful Margaret and her team were in making sure everything (the music, the flowers, the food, the whole process) went off without a hitch. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. A wedding is such a complicated process to ensure that all the elements go smoothly and they did a brilliant job. As the bride, it was such a relief that I didn't have to worry on my special day. Such a lovely day! Looking forward to doing our next event at the Whist Club.

The entire whist team was completely amazing. They were so accommodating and on top of it all. I never had to worry about a thing, their service and workers were incredibly nice and helpful and friendly. I wish I could use them again sometime soon.

The Whist is a beautiful venue and offers everything we wanted for our wedding. The staff went above and beyond to meet our needs and to ensure all went smoothly. We could not be more pleased with our experience at the Whist Club.

We just celebrated our wedding a few weeks ago. We had 78 guests. Our wedding at the University and Whist Club was AMAZING! Not only was the venue beautiful but their package included so much more than other venues that we had gone to look at (i.e. centerpieces, cake, etc). What really sold it for us though was the ability to live stream our wedding to our family in England and South Africa. The picture and sound was so clear they felt like they were truly there for our big day. Our day was perfect. They had snacks and drinks waiting for the wedding party when we arrived. They made sure they brought out some of hors d'oeuvres out to those of us who were missing cocktail hour for pictures. I am still getting so many compliments on how beautiful the building and wedding space was and how great the food was (I highly recommend the chicken oscar and short ribs!). Their house florist Mary Coty made our centerpieces and they were so beautiful and turned out better than we could have dreamed of. Our cake was made by Liberty Lane Cake Shoppe (included in the package) and it was both gorgeous and tasty. Everyone was such a delight to work with at the Whist Club and their wedding coordinators Margaret and William really made our dreams a reality. We've had several people come up to me and say it's the best wedding they've been to.

The Whist was perfect for our wedding! From start to finish we had a great experience. The Food was great, the service was great & the atmosphere was great. They were flexible to work with and truly made our day perfect. I would recommend University & Whist Club to anybody looking to have an event!

We got married on December 7th and we are still hearing how amazing and beautiful the Whist Club was!!! Everything and everyone was absolutely outstanding. Margaret from the first time we toured the Whist Club was like a wedding fairy godmother! She does such an amazing job with each couple to create their dream wedding! Margaret answered every email, phone call, vendor call so promptly! We wanted the room set up a certain way and she had us come in to see it to make sure it was what we wanted! William lead the whole whist wedding team at our reception and made sure everything was running promptly and smoothly. Jaime, Nicole and Jeffrey were awesome. So helpful and always checking to make sure we were okay and the wedding party! We had our first look and took bridal party shots prior to our ceremony at the Church. They were setting up everything for the reception and still took the time to ask if we needed water or snacks for our three year old flower girl! The food was to die for! We are still hearing how the crab cake is the best they’ve ever had! Mary Cory designs does a beautiful job with the table arrangements that are included in the wedding package. She meets with you to go over what you would like and I had her do additional cocktail hour decor and lanterns during the reception. This really made the stand out! Thank you whist club for the most amazing and memorable day!! We couldn’t hAve had a better experience! We wish we could do it again!

I LOVE the University & Whist Club, I highly recommend this venue. I had my rehearsal dinner, ceremony and wedding reception here. The Whist staff go out of their way to make sure your special day is perfect. Margaret, the Wedding and Banquet Coordinator, was with me every step of the way and always quick to respond to my questions or concerns. She offered many great suggestions and always willing to accommodate our needs. Other staff including William, Jamie, Jeff and Gloria were there to attend to every detail so I would not have to worry about a thing. The food for our rehearsal dinner and wedding was fantastic. The Whist's interior rooms are lovely and inviting. The new ballroom is stunning. We chose to have the ceremony outside and the Whist's grounds were landscaped beautifully for a fall day. The Whist Club is a perfect venue for your wedding or any special event!

I honestly have zero complaints about our wedding for 130 guests on a Saturday at 5pm. The U & Whist Club far exceeded our expectations and treated us in a genuine and respectful manner throughout the planning process (which began about 8 months before). Not only were we impressed by the fun and friendly service throughout our wedding (servers, bartenders, bussers), the fantastic food (stuffed chicken, short ribs, veggie pad Thai), and above and beyond decor/ambiance, but our guests have not stopped raving about what a great job this venue did! It’s one thing to be so appreciative for outstanding service at a very affordable cost, but to receive compliments from guests is really wonderful and we are so grateful. Margaret and William were excellent coordinators; staying flexible while keeping us on track. Margaret clearly has plenty of experience with event planning and wedding ideas/short cuts/solutions...a sort of Wedding Whisperer! Jamie, part of the catering team, treated us with friendly and accommodating service all night.
The U & Whist Club makes the planning so simple by including floral centerpieces, cake, linens, and catering in one package. We were left to hire a photographer, dj, and had bouquets and extra floral arrangements done by M. Coty Desings in addition to the included centerpieces.
I cannot say enough great things about this venue. Our wedding was easily the best day of my life and U & Whist Club was the foundation for making that happen. We even received a Thank You note from a guest saying how much they enjoyed the evening!

The Whist was the final place we looked at before deciding on the reception. I am very glad we went with them. Margaret was very flexible and took care of everything so that the evening ran smoothly. There were a few things we had forgotten to iron out beforehand (our bad) but the staff was very efficient and it barely took a moment of time. We had a blast at the reception and so did our guests.

Margaret and the whole team at the Whist are fabulous. Everything for our big day went off without a hitch! They were so accommodating with everything & quick to respond to questions. As far as all-inclusive venues go, this one is the best value! Food is fantastic. Photograph opportunities are are far superior to other venues. If you are looking for a venue that is all-inclusive, beautiful,classy, easy and no hassle, The Whist is definitely for you!

Margaret and the University and Whist Club did a fantastic job with our wedding! We chose to use the University and Whist club only 3 months prior to the date of the wedding, and they did a great job pulling it off. Any little request we had they were able to accommodate and they really held our hands through the whole process. The venue was beautiful for a classic upscale wedding and they were by far the best value for the food, atmosphere and service! We highly recommend them.

Margaret, along with everyone at the Whist Club, was so helpful during the planning of and on our wedding day. Margaret made sure we had everything we needed and went above and beyond her job to make sure that we had the perfect wedding day. She is so easy to work with and really made wedding planning an enjoyable experience. The staff at the Whist Club was wonderful and we got comments throughout the night and afterwards about how nice the wait staff and bartenders were. Every guest at our wedding was well taken care of and it did not go unnoticed! We had the perfect day and it was made even better by the value of the Whist Club helping us stay within our budget.

The staff was so accommodating! They did absolutely everything we asked and a little more! This was a great place to be married!

We loved this venue! Margaret was fantastic to work with. She was very flexible and accomodating to all our requests. The venue is beautiful and the grounds have been extensively renovated. We had 75 people at our wedding which worked well for the room size, though you could easily fit more people. The food was excellent- we had crab cakes, filets and a custom chicken dish that they worked with us on. All was cooked perfectly; several guests said the crab cake was the best they'd ever had. We added an ice cream bar at the end of the night which was delicious and fun for our guests. We had an issue with our florist not putting the LED lights in our centerpieces, called them and had it fixed right away even though it wasn't a huge deal. We did run into a snag right before the ceremony- we hired someone to transport our dog back and forth to the venue for the ceremony and she ended up showing up 30 minutes late to the ceremony causing a delay. Without missing a beat, Margaret and team stepped in and offered to our guests to come back inside since it was hot out and even brought water and iced tea out to our guests as they waited out the delay. They worked with the kitchen to make sure that there were no issues with our food. Overall I would highly recommend this venue to anyone; they were great.

The Whist Club is an absolutely gorgeous venue. Margaret was very prompt with responses and made us very happy throughout the entire process. We would recommend this venue to anyone looking for a beautiful historical location. The food was amazing and our guests are still raving about the crab cake. You definitely get the most out of your money here and the quality is unmatched.

My husband and I were so lucky to find this venue for both our rehearsal dinner and wedding last September. All of the planning went smoothly thanks to Margaret who was a huge help throughout the process. We were treated to a tasting of the food options and cakes and this confirmed that we had chosen the right location. The tasting was more like a private family dinner which was lovely. Both the rehearsal dinner and wedding were perfect for what we were looking for. It is a very intimate venue and the food is phenomenal. Also we opted to use the in house florist Dominique and she created beautiful centerpieces, bouquets, and arrangements. Margaret and the rest of the staff were extremely accommodating to all of our requests and we really could not have asked for anything more. We can't thank them enough for creating such a memorable day for us and our families. We would highly recommend this venue.

We absolutely Loved our experience with the University and Whist Club in Wilmington! The Club truly offers an "Entire package" experience so you can have your wedding ceremony and reception there without worrying about many minor details. The catering, linens, floral centerpieces, and cake (as well as cake cutting fees) are ALL included so it truly saves $$ for an excellent experience. We enjoyed the environment so much we chose to have an intimate DELICIOUS rehearsal dinner in a private room the night before the wedding as well. It was truly beautiful! The staff was incredibly professional and so eager to help with ANY little detail - it was as if we were the prince/princess at our home castle for the day. The Club also only does 1 wedding per day so you're not feeling rushed or pushed along at all - girls have the entire upstairs to get prepped/dressed and the boys have a full sports bar (stocked and open to their use) and pool table/Foosball downstairs as well. Food is phenomenal, Open bar is included (w/no extra fees) and the entire facilities are stunning! Highly recommend and would love to host or attend another event at the University and Whist Club!!

The University and Whist Club was spectacular for our May 30, 2015 wedding. From the first day we met with Margaret to view the venue, she was kind, accommodating, and patient. She answered all of our questions and was extremely flexible with all of our changes or suggestions. After booking we had our food tasting. The University and Whist Club made this a special event for our family by allowing us to sample not only full meals, but also all of their house wines and champagne. The food during the tasting was outstanding.
During the entire planning process Margaret answered numerous emails, questions, and assisted me in any way she could. This eliminated a lot of my stress and made the planning a fun experience. She accommodated my schedule for all of our meetings due to me living out of town. The Club also offers most services in house which made the planning process seamlessly easy and eliminated the stress of using unreliable vendors.
Our wedding day was executed with perfection. Margaret arrived early in the morning to supervise all aspects and assist the staff with setting up. She truly takes pride in her work and shows a strong passion for creating a wonderful day. During the reception, subtle details made our day even more memorable. From saving us a sampling of all the hors d’oeuvres, to sending us to our hotel with champagne and meals. All of our guests commented on the high quality food, stunning historical sight and high level of service. Cathy also accommodated not only all of my requests, but also all of our guests. The Club obviously hires the best and trains their staff superbly. I cannot thank the University and Whist Club enough for creating a perfect wedding day. If you are looking for quality service, outstanding food, and sophistication the University and Whist Club will assist you in creating an amazing wedding.

I was very pleased with my reception at the University and Whist Club. It is a beautiful location and absolutely gorgeous in early spring when the trees are blooming. We worked with with Margaret to help us create a smaller scaled down wedding reception/ cocktail party. She helped us to stay in budget and was always willing to answer questions via email promptly. Also the cake and the food were amazing! I highly recommend the Whist club.

We fell in love with the Whist the moment we pulled into the long driveway, sheltered by an old stone wall. The Club's historic charm made the decision really easy. Margaret, Cathy, Dominique, Deborah and all the staff at the Club made our wedding day dream a reality and I couldn't be more pleased with how the venue looked the day of the wedding. All my guests commented on how delicious the food was, how responsive the staff was and just how gorgeous the entire Club looked. I cannot thank the staff enough for the great job they did.

Absolutely amazing. Margaret and Cathy were wonderful to work with - planning was a snap and the day went off perfectly. The club is a beautiful venue and the addition of the outdoor ceremony space is a great option! The food is delicious - make sure you get the "bang bang shrimp" appetizer! I loved the "one stop shop" aspect - catering, bar, cake, flowers and service are all included and the prices were definitely some of the most reasonable in the area. My guests had tons of compliments and are still telling me how much they loved their day there.

All in all, it was the perfect wedding - I'd definitely recommend giving the University and Whist Club a look for your special day!

Margaret and Cathy have been SO good from the beginning. Quick response all the time (phone or email). The food all taste so good, we couldn't decide which plate to choose! The package includes everything - gratuity, service, valet parking for guests, wedding cake (with great coffee and tea), open bar, linens, fresh flowers throughout the venue (we got $ off because I am allergic and we decided to not use fresh flowers). We did the cocktail hour indoor as well (we didn't want summer heat for our guests), and there are plenty of rooms to mingle. They set up a bridal suite for us, brought hor d'oeuvres to us, and when we were walking around to take pictures/talk to guests, there was a staff following us (with food and drinks in her hand) just to make sure we get food. They have a nice big dance floor, and we had lots of fun with our guests that night. They even went out of their way to accommodate us for a Chinese tea ceremony in the middle of the reception. And EVERYBODY was raving about the food and cake. Overall, this has got to be one of the best place to celebrate a wedding in Delaware! Thank you, University and Whist Club. We will surely be back and recommend you to everyone we know around the area!

I had my wedding reception at The University and Whist Club of Wilmington, DE, this past August and they were amazing to work with. Margaret and Cathy were so professional, flexible, and easy to work with my wife, and family couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Our family and friends told kept telling my wife and I, how beautiful the Whist Club is, how nice all the staff was, how great all the food and cake was, and everyone told my wife and I, “You two picked the best place in Wilmington, DE, to have your wedding reception.” Lastly, out of all the places we looked at in the Philly/Wilmington, DE area the numbers were the best at the Whist Club and I feel like for the service, professionalism, flexibility, high quality of the food and drinks, we would of paid double!...

If your on the fence and don’t know where you want to have your wedding reception go to the University and Whist Club of Wilmington, DE ask for Margaret and Cathy and you will not for one second regret it. Again, I was so happy with everything! I told them if any future client of theirs would like to talk to someone who has used their facilities to pass on my information because I would love to tell them how they should choose the University and Whist Club of Wilmington, DE.

The entire day was perfect. Everything was organized and facilitated by the club, and I did not have to worry about a thing!

My husband and I knew this was our venue when we first stepped into it. We had our ceremony as well as the reception here. Everyone their was very accommodating and things just flowed smoothly. This venue was accomodating and met all of our my needs. I had a pretty unique vision for my space that the staff at the Whist club embraced with open arms. When I ran into a few RSVP stumbling blocks, they were right there to think of a creative solution. My guest felt special that night and so did I. I also got a lot of compliments on the food - taste, temperature, and quality. Thanks!

From the flowers to the food to the cake, the University & Whist Club exceeded our wedding day expectations in every way. Throughout the planning process the staff were extremely attentive and accommodating, even going out of their way to make a special request cake. Another plus is that once you book a day your event is the only one that day so they are not rushing you out so they can get ready for the next party.
