Tips and Advice
Here are some tips to help you have a more enjoyable event. Generally speaking if something goes wrong, it’s the photographer that has to deal with it. Therefore, if the bride isn’t smiling then the photographs aren’t going to be good. . • Assuming that you are wearing a black tux, leave the jacket off until the last minute. Women’s make-up from hugs is like dry wall dust. • Tell the groom that when he puts his arm around the bride, she isn’t a buddy. Guys tend to put their arms over someone's shoulders; this will tear her veil off. All hands and arms go under the veil, this applies to dads as well. • Put a cheese tray and a small cooler of bottled water in the bride's dressing room. The girls will get up early and will do everything but lunch. A little bit of protein will go a long way to keep one from passing out. • Don’t let the groom and his guys to golfing or whatever outside thing that morning. Sun burnt noses look dumb. • It’s always nice when the groom send some flowers to the bride’s dressing room (dozen roses) before she dresses. • Ladies keep a roll of paper towels in the dressing room. Fresh flowers usually arrive in water. These will need to be dried before photos so that water doesn’t drip on your dresses while posing for pictures. • Boutonnieres go on the left lapel. They look much better when they are pinned from underneath the lapel. • The bride’s side of the church is traditionally on the left facing the front. • If you’re having a Unity Candle and the mothers are going to light the family candles, if possible have go around behind them. Their faces make for much better photos and you can see what they are doing. • Aisle runners are fading out. Since they are usually either paper or plastic, the ladies’ heals sometimes get caught in them. If you do have one, pulling a cord from the middle to unroll it acts like a brake. Have the usher(s) pull the cord outwards away from the runner so that it will unwind freely. • Many brides are no longer doing the “garter toss” at the reception. • If you are anticipating having a lot of kids at the reception, set up an activity table for them in a corner. Ask someone to oversee it and supply it with coloring books, games etc. I saw one where they have cup cakes for them to decorate with squeeze bottle icings and sprinkles. Anything beats watching unattended children slide across the dance floor all night.
