Frequently Asked Questions for Photography
What primary photographic style do you identify with?
Contemporary, Photojournalism

What do your packages include?
Albums, Custom Graphic Design, Flush Mount, High Resolution Images, Matted Prints, Prints, Proof CD of All Images, Thank You Cards, Video Montage

Do you have liability insurance?
Yes

Do you offer special techniques such as hand-coloring or toning?
I use many special techniques. Every image is reviewed, enhanced, color-corrected, etc. I use sepia toning and black and white as well as special effects.

Do you have experience shooting in various lighting situations?
All lighting... Of course there is always that ideal lighting that all photographers hope for, however that is not the primary thought for the bride when she chooses her wedding venue.

Is your media preference film or digital?
I work primarily in digital, however, it is always fun to go back to my old 35 mm... but NEVER when shooting something as important as a wedding. Weddings need perfection... and that is what most digital cameras deliver.

How many photographers do you work with?
Myself and 1 additional photographer when the occasion arises. She is very qualified and has worked under me for several years.

Do you guarantee your presence at the actual event?
Absolutely! The only time you will get my additional photographer is when she works with me, or if there is an unforseen emergancy!

Do you sometimes book yourself for more than one event in a day? Weekend?
Never 2 weddings in a day! Brides do not deserve that... they already have too much to think about. Possibly 2 on a weekend... if they are close in distance and are relatively easy weddings. I always meet with my brides at least twice to know what their needs are. If their wedding is big and requires a lot of extra attention, then no... I wouldn't book another for the same weekend.

Do you have a replacement photographer in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?
Yes. My additional photographer is very well trained and I would trust her explicitly!

What kind of equipment do you typically bring with you on the day-of?
Cameras, lighting (if needed), flashes, extra batteries, motor drives, extra image cards, battery packs, tripod, etc.

Do you bring back-up equipment to the event in case of malfunction?
Yes... just in case.

Do you charge hourly or full day?
I charge per package, or hourly.

Are you available to shoot extra hours? If yes, how much do you charge for extra hours?
Yes, always... the whole day is theirs if they need it. I charge $100 an hour overtime.

What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
None... usless i need to use the powder room! :)

Do you charge for travel?
Yes, if it is over 100 miles. However... it is usually integrated into the price and discussed prior to the wedding.

How soon after the event are the proofs ready for viewing?
They are online and ready for viewing in a week! Why should my brides wait a month or longer to see their photos?

In what format are the initial proofs offered?
Website or a proof book. You cannot see what your photos look like in a thumbnail... it is too hard for the bride to make a decission off of a thumbnail size photo or a standard contact sheet.

How long can the client keep the proofs?
They are their's to keep.

Do you retain the copyright for the photos?
Yes

Do you reserve the right to publish the photos?
Yes... I always have my brides sign model releases. If they do not wish to have their faces shown publicly, I honor their wishes.

Do you provide the digital files and/or negatives (or copies of the negatives) to the client?
Yes, if it is included in their package.

Will images be available for viewing online?
Yes

What kind of albums do you offer?
A selection of beautiful albums in three different sizes.

When will the client get the final album?
In approximately 2 weeks from the time you order it.

Tips and Advice
Why Do Wedding Photographers Charge So Much?

(They really don't... and here is why...)

All too often, I hear, “Why do Wedding Photographers charge so much?” Brides and their families get discouraged by the prices, choose a family member to take the photos, and then regret their decision after they receive the results.

Other still, will use a low cost photographer who may do a fair job, put the photos online, and then rather than purchasing the photos from the photographer, they’ll save the pictures to their computer and print them out; only to end up with poor quality, pixilated photographs.

When you choose a Professional Wedding Photographer, you are choosing someone who’s main purpose and goal is to award you with beautiful documentation of your most special day. And when you pay for your Wedding Photography, you are not just paying for someone to click the camera a few times and print your pictures… you are paying for experience and the great amount of time involved in provided you with quality professional prints, albums and more.

Let’s take a look at just what goes into your Wedding Photography…

1st… there is at least 30 minutes of preparation before the photographer even leaves their home or studio… charging battery packs, packing their vehicle with equipment, etc.

2nd… there is the travel to the venue, and depending where the Wedding is booked, the photographer could be traveling anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours or longer.

3rd… you have at least 30-60 minutes preparation, talking to the bride and wedding party members, setting up and so forth.

4th… depending on the size and length of the wedding, there is anywhere from 2 to 8 hours of non-stop photography. Not to mention the cost of an additional photographer if required.

5th… at least 30-60 minutes to upload between 2 to 8 GB of photos to the computer and back it up.

6th… anywhere from 2 to 12 hours of computer work, which can include making additional copies of photos, editing each and every photo consisting of cropping, contrasting, photo effects such as coloring, sharpening, etc. If the wedding is large… you are looking at many, many more hours of work…

7th… 30 minutes to 2 hours of uploading edited photographs to an online photo gallery.

8th… anywhere from 2 to 10 hours of interaction with the bride and groom, discussing and taking their order and payment for their photos, designing photo albums, placing the photo order, receiving it and making sure everything is perfect and then delivering it to the customer.

Additionally, any number of circumstances can come up during the entire process, ie: additional meetings, change of venues, etc… which require extra time.

So, as you can see, there is an extreme amount of work involved in assuring the bride and groom a beautiful documentation of their very special moment. When you break it down you can see why the photography costs are a little more involved than most folks think.

Although Uncle Joe can take pretty good photos… It is a big risk to trust your most valued moments to a family member or friend. Uncle Joe wants to be a part of all the fun and excitement, and he no doubt will miss many wonderful shots. A professional photographer has years of training and experience. They know what works and what doesn’t. They know how to pose people and how to get the right shot for the right moment.

There is one more thing to consider in choosing your professional photographer. There are many chain studios or quite large photography groups. When you book your wedding with one of these groups, you may not know who you are getting. Often they send out who is available.

A professional photographer should take the time to meet and consult with you at least twice before the wedding… and one of those meetings should be at the wedding venue and the reception venue. Your photographer should get to know you… your likes… your style, etc. in order to give you an individualized photo shoot.

Finally, when choosing your wedding photographer, be sure that it is someone you can interact well with. If your photographer is only doing the job for the money… then they are not a true professional photographer. A true professional photographer takes great joy in their work, and it is evidenced in their disposition, outlook and professionalism.
