Great location and venue coordinator!
The Ball House and Cottages were so great to work with. After losing our first venue due to the county shutting them down, we were able to secure this beautiful location. If only we had known about this place before, it would have saved us from so much stress. Tim was very responsive, flexible and provided great service. He went over and above to ensure my daughter’s wedding was perfect. This place was perfect for our wedding of 230 guest. We used all 5 cottages and the 4 bedrooms upstairs for the wedding party. This made it so easy to stay onsite for the entire weekend. Received so many compliments on the venue and how beautiful the wedding was! Thank you Tim! This is the perfect place for a classic southern wedding with all the amenities. -

I couldn't be happier with how my daughter's wedding turned out at the Southwood House! It.was.stunning. We utilized the front lawn under the arch of an oak tree for the ceremony, the front porch and inside the house for the cocktail hour and the back yard for the dinner and dancing, and it was absolutely perfect! I did end up having to tent the back due to possible rain (and it poured four separate times before the wedding), but everyone thought the tent (from InTents Event) added to venue and it allowed us to decorate before the ceremony regardless of weather conditions. The weather was perfect for the entire event, and we couldn't be happier with the way the wedding turned out. The house is very accommodating for large crowds and truly gives a Southern hospitality feel. It comes with the most gorgeous furniture that you are allowed to use in the inside of the house. We also used the cottages for the bridal party, which was perfect, and the day of the wedding we utilized the entire upstairs for breakfast, lunch and a pre-wedding toast. It was beautiful! Jessica was great as well! She was extremely responsive to emails -- even during her maternity leave -- and was very knowledgeable of the entire venue and how to run an event well at this venue. We had guests from all over, and they said it was magical. I agree. Love.this.place. -

The Southwood house was beautiful and Jessica along with the rest of the staff were phenomenal. Southwood is the only plantation home in the area that allows you to use the actual house and get ready inside. We used the golf club for catering as well, and when we didn't love one of the options, Tim let us come back and try different items. All around a perfect day and Jessica was a great coordinator who was a huge part in making our day incredible! -

We used the Southwood House & Cottages for our ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, and booked all the cottages for us & our parents to stay in during the wedding weekend. Jessica Worden is a true asset to Southwood--she was our contact throughout the process and I definitely asked her more questions than any other vendor (by far), but she never made me feel like I was a burden or a hassle at all. In fact, she was on maternity leave during wedding planning and with a new baby, took the time to respond to emails and questions (talk about going above and beyond!). My singular regret about our wedding is that we couldn't use Jessica as our wedding day-of coordinator (though the one we used was wonderful), just because she is so helpful and calm. She was great about changing the menu, updating our contract, scheduling numerous tastings, and making suggestions for how things would work best or what wouldn't work. She always went out of her way to make sure we were happy and satisfied with how things were going. Our wedding was absolutely beautiful--the grounds & House were immaculate day-of and the cottages were gorgeous--it was so convenient to be right on site. I do wish we could've gotten a late check-out the morning after, but the cottages were booked (can't be helped so I understand). I will say that a food & beverage staff member was driving around the morning-of on a golf cart at the venue, & I asked him if he could get me a key to my cottage from the clubhouse. He bluntly said that he is food & beverage, nothing to do with the cottages, but that I could go down to the clubhouse myself & get a key. I asked if he could drive me (since it was the morning of the wedding and I [the bride] was rushing to be on schedule), and he said no, that I could walk. I found that pretty off-putting. That said, Tim Allen (food and beverage director) and head Chef Mike were also wonderful, and the entire rest of the staff of Southwood was great day-of. Thank you everyone! -

We held our ceremony in the Plantation House. We could not have been more please with everything. Jessica was extremely flexible and professional. We enjoyed working with her throughout the experience. On the day of the wedding, she was on hand and was no phased when we made the decision (at the last minute almost) to move the ceremony outside. Her experience paid off significantly for us. Also, our bartender, Kyle, was extremely professional and courteous. We had a specialized cocktail for the reception. He learned it quickly and make it to perfection every time.
We also spent the wedding night in a cottage. That was the perfect setting for beginning our married life together.
Kudos to Southwood!!! -

The SouthWood House and Cottages was the PERFECT venue for our ceremony and reception! Many of our guests referred to our wedding as "A Real Fairytale Wedding", and SouthWood definitely gave it that feel - a fairytale with southern charm. Jessica Worden was amazing to work with and put everyone at ease. I was unusually calm for a bride on her wedding day, but that was because I felt as though Jessica would take care of anything that came up, and she did! I would absolutely recommend SouthWood to other brides, and already have! Thank you, SouthWood, for giving us the wedding of our dreams! -

When looking for our ceremony and reception location, Southwood was out of our budget but my now husband wanted to look anyways. We instantly fell in love and knew we had to make it work, it is the definition of a classic southern wedding location! But what really sold us, was Jessica. Many other locations were extremely strict about what you could do and all Jessica asked was you let her know before you did it. Jessica was also our day of coordinator and if you don't have a wedding planner, get a day of coordinator!!!!!! She blew our entire family away by how EXTREMELY helpful and absolutely AMAZING she is!!! She did everything we needed, wanted, and didn't even know we needed or wanted. She packed everything up for us and put the most important items in our cottage after the wedding, she put everything else inside the house so we could get it all out the day after, she dealt with all of the vendors and was my saving grace. It's impossible to express in words everything Jessica did for us on our wedding day, all I can say was she made our day the best day of our lives! -

Oh where do I even begin....the Southwood House is simply elegant and is exactly what I was looking for. I love how we were able to utilize the house in which most places it was just for looks! I was able to have both my ceremony and reception in one location and I was able to rent the cottages that were right behind for people with children and our grandparents which allowed them to spend more time with us that evening! The staff that assisted (chair relocation and bartenders) did an amazing job as well! They were quick and professional! Now for Jessica....I think she was the second most talked about person ... heck maybe even most...that evening. We hired her for the wedding coordination and she did so much more and was just purely amazing. She set up the day before and helped set up the day of and change things around to my OCD self. She was very organized and kept everything on track and on time the day of from start to finish. She was always say to get ahold of and fast to respond if she didn't answer right away! Jessica I hope you realize just how amazing and talented you are! :) -

The Southwood House is the absolutely perfect place for any wedding. We booked this venue a year in advance and made all the necessary decisions quickly there after. The Southwood team was able to accommodate all our arrangements. Jessica is the top wedding planner in Tallahassee and I HIGHLY recommend utilizing her services. She and her team flawlessly put our wedding together; I didn't lift one finger on my wedding day and it turned out more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. I told Jessica I wanted the event to portray "elegance" and she went above and beyond to achieve this look. Jessica coordinated all the vendors so I was never bothered with any decision making.
The team and staff at Southwood are a pleasure to work with and bring a huge smile to your face. The chef came out after dinner was served and everyone in the room stood to applause his amazing meal. I thought it was such a cute idea to have the chef come out and wave to our guests.
Southwood goes above and beyond the call of a wedding venue to make your event over the top and easy. If you are debating between locations, choose Southwood, you will not be disappointed. -

Jessica did a fantastic job helping to plan the wedding and reception at the Southwood House and Cottages. She was always quick to respond to emails and was so easy to work with. The House was perfect for photos, space in getting the bridal party ready and our cocktail hour. The bridal party was very pleased with the cottages we rented the night before the wedding. I would definitely recommend this venue. -

Wish I could give more than 5 stars! Beautiful venue, reasonable catering, and Jessica the event coordinator is friendly, helpful, responsive, and creative! I thought this was venue was well out of my price range, but they will work with you and the venue definitely is worth the cost. If you plan on the off season or on a non-conventional day they also offer discounts. Once I saw this venue I knew it was where I wanted to have my wedding, it is perfect! Edit: Post wedding and I am more than thrilled we chose the Southwood House for our big day! It was just perfect, the staff, the venue, everything. -

The Southwood House and Cottages is the perfect venue for a Southern wedding. We had the best time working with Jessica and her team to coordinate our wedding day! Jessica was easy to work with and always available to answer our many, many questions. Her team performed the chair relocation between our ceremony and reception, and they moved seamlessly between the two events. Also, we used Southwood's bartenders for our cocktail hour and reception and they did a great job! They worked with us on our bar menu and provided a great variety for our guests. It was the perfect day and we are so grateful for all their hard work!
Our families also enjoyed staying at the Southwood cottages for the wedding weekend. They are charming, clean and well maintained. Each cottage has the sweetest front porch with rocking chairs, a perfect place to enjoy your morning cup of coffee. I would recommend the cottages to anyone staying in the area! Also, Jim and Jason with the St. Joe crew were easily available to help us with any questions during our stay.
We so enjoyed our time at Southwood and look forward to our next excuse to visit! -

We had the perfect wedding at the SouthWood House. The outdoor ceremony was beautiful and serene, the arbor being surrounded by old oak trees. The reception inside was very intimate, it's like having dinner together with our family and friends in our own house. The food and service was really good. Jessica, the event organizer, was very accommodating with all our needs. -

Zach and I fell in love with the SouthWood House immediately when we saw it.The pictures do not do it justice. The huge oak trees and beautiful house is breathtaking. Ever since then our journey to our special day was fantastic. Jessica was so much help and always available when we had questions or needed help. She seriously made the process so smooth for us. The day of she made sure everything was taken care of, there was not a worry in the world! Also the crew the day before/day of/day after at southwood were fantastic, friendly, and so much help. I could have not asked for a better venue and experience. If you're getting married soon this is the place to be! SERIOUSLY! Best place/experience for my wedding. -

We utilized Southwood for three different functions related to our wedding. The first was a family and friend golf outing on the day before. Jason and Matt accommodated our request for 6 morning tee times and ensured everything was ready upon our arrival. Everyone had great fun with golf and lunch in the clubhouse after. We utilized the Southwood Golf Club for our rehearsal dinner and working with Jessica was wonderful. She was patient, incredibly flexible and understanding. There were great menu choices and the food prepared was wonderful! Our wedding was at the Southwood House, an absolutely beautiful place! We had access to and utilized the house all day and evening and watched the grounds transform with all of our vendors setting up. Our dream became a reality. We also utilized the cottages which were so cute and met our every need, including the extras we requested from Jessica. Thank you Jessica, Jason, Matt and ALL the Southwood staff for exceeding every expectation that we had and helping make our wedding weekend full of wonderful memories! -

My husband and I fell in Southwood as soon as we visited it. The pictures really do it no justice! The front lawn made the most picturesque ceremony. The bridal party and I walked out of the house and we said our 'I Dos' in front of the live oaks. The reception was at night under the twinkling lights in the back lawn. Everything was perfect. Our guests could not stop raving about how beautiful it was. We hired an on-site coordinator and she made everything so easy. She took care of the vendors and made sure everything looked exactly how I wanted it since I could not help set up. I felt so at ease during the entire process. I would HIGHLY recommend Southwood to anyone who is looking for their Fairy Tale wedding site! -

After one visit to the Southwood House we knew this would be the venue for our wedding. When my husband and I sat down to plan our wedding we knew we wanted a venue that would be different and that would allow us to do almost anything to make it look exactly how we wanted it to look. Southwood staff was very flexible in making those wishes come true. We use their day of coordinating service which allowed us to plan on our own and Jessica, the day of coordinator made sure our wedding went smooth on the day of as far as contacting vendors, creating a detailed timeline as well as setting up and taking care of things needed for the day of. Jessica also conducted the rehearsal with the bridal party the day before. We also used their parking service to assist with directing guest where to park.
Our only thought after the wedding was, for a wedding with 250 people we should have made sure Jessica would have been assigned an assistant to help her. I think an assistant or 2 would have been beneficial. Overall, our outdoor wedding and reception was amazing and I would recommend using the Southwood House for any private event! -

The Southwood House was the venue selected for our daughter's wedding. It had everything we were looking for in order to have a traditional Southern flair and it ended up being absolutely amazing. They were accommodating in everyway possible way to make sure everything met our expectations. In addition, the cottages were very nice and so convenient. The manager Gabrielle was, simply put, fantastic to work with! -

Cara is very nice to work with and very flexibility on her schedule. She is always there whenever you need her and make you feel calm and confident. On our special day, she just take care of what ever you left and finish them quickly and professionally!! Without Cara's help, we couldn't finish the wedding preparation in one month!!

My husband and I fell in love with the Southwood House from the moment we saw it, and both of us knew that we wanted to have our wedding ceremony and reception there. Cara was FABULOUS to work with and it was a pleasure working with her on all aspects of the wedding planning process.

The Southwood House is a beautiful antebellum jewel hidden among the moss covered oaks in Tallahassee. I was awe-struck by the grandeur and the whisper of southern tradition at this location. It was a true fairy tale wedding and reception with the grounds providing the only decor needed to bring reality to my vision. Cara is a wonderful and professional event coordinator who takes great care to make the planning process simple. She provided us with ample information including suggested vendors and she also took time to let visit the site on several occasions to plan adequately for the wedding and reception. -

The Southwood House is a beautiful location for a wedding or reception. They were extremely flexible with me as we planned our event, doing multiple site visits and arranging our plans for the evening. We had access to the house the entire day before our even as well, which allowed ample time for set up and drop off’s from our vendors. This was a great help in reducing stress for the day of! The Director Cara was there during the event to help with any issues we had and even made sure our light tower was turned on in the parking area.
All of our guests were impressed with the house and the amenities and many stated that it was one of the best locations they had been to for a wedding reception.
I would recommend this site for anyone who wants a beautiful “at home” feel for a wedding or reception, or sweet southern charm. From the antebellum feel and look of the property, to the gorgeous house (which hardly needs any decorating) and surrounding beauty of the oak trees, it truly was perfect for us.
It was the perfect place for to celebrate our happy marriage!

The staff at SouthWood are very professional and accommodating. The house itself is gorgeous inside and out and all the guests at the wedding loved it as well! If you are having both ceremony and reception at the house, the options for where to set up each are endless. I would also highly recommend the Cottages behind the SouthWood house for out of town guests. Each cottage is its own 1 bedroom/1 bath house perfect for families or a group of friends! I highly recommend the SouthWood House and Cottages for weddings with its backdrop of mossy oaks and camelia trees! -

I have plenty of wonderful things to say about beautiful SouthWood and the staff!!
Working with Cara to secure the ceremony and the reception location was easy. She is extremely professional and was able to answer my many questions. She was always available by phone or email and was quick at responding. She was also able to assist me and my mother-in-law with setting up a rehearsal dinner at the Clubhouse. She also scheduled a golf outing for my husband and his groomsmen. On the weekend of the wedding, the SouthWood staff was courteous and went above and beyond many times to accommodate us and our guests.
The SouthWood House is the total package- it had everything we were looking for in a venue. It is in a quiet space, a beautiful outdoor location, and the inside of the house is impeccable. Absolutely gorgeous with lots of history. The house itself, along with the outdoor location, had my guests and vendors asking a lot of questions about the history- and everyone was complimenting its beauty. It is obvious that the SouthWood House and grounds are very well taken care of even when events are not going on.
When looking for a ceremony and reception venue, there was no doubt to us that SouthWood was the best value for cost in the area. We looked at several locations in a similar price range, and the SouthWood House simply stood out from all the rest. SouthWood's availability, quality of service, quality of location, close proximity to major highways for out of town guests... It simply had everything we were looking for, and more. Another plus is that we had the house for the entire weekend- so we were not rushing to set up everything on Saturday morning , we did not have to worry about someone else's event going overtime, and our vendors were able to set up in advance.
I would recommend the SouthWood House to anyone looking for a historic outdoor location in the Tallahassee area. With the exceptional service, beautiful house and charming grounds, it is a lovely event location. -

For starters, you cannot beat the value. The price is slightly lower than other comparable venues in the area, and for a small extra fee, you get Cara. Cara was so organized, flexible, accessible, and professional we were compelled to write a personal email to her superior. She was always ready with suggestions and answers to our questions, and there were many. When I decided to change the ceremony location last minute, Cara worked with me and my family to assist in logistics, even when we were not very accessible! The day of my wedding, Cara set up everything. She contacted my vendors to coordinate arrival times and set up. I cannot say how stress free and beautiful my wedding was thanks to the beautiful setting and all of Cara's hard work! I will definitely recommend the SouthWood Plantation House to all my engaged friends! -

We can not say enough about the Southwood house for a beautiful wedding and reception.All we can say is go by and see it in person. The rooms upstairs are wonderful for the bride and her party to get dressed, makeup and hair done in a antique luxury setting without having to leave. The annex next door for the men to get ready in a seperate area is great for the bride that does not want to be seen before the wedding. The best part of renting the facility is Cara, she was very accommodating and was always available to help our vendors to let them see the facilitys. She is the best!!!! -

I can't tell you how many people commented on this absolutely perfect place to hold a wedding reception--everyone oohed and aahed over the setting and the interior of the house! It was gorgeous--and the best part was there was very little to do in the way of decorating for the reception--it was like having it in your own home, only a hundred times better...absolutely the most perfect venue ever! -

I loved this venue, it was perfect! I am a southern girl and my husband is from Boston, MA so this site was perfect for the elegance and a bit of southern class. We loved all the greenery and fell in love the front porch and large tiers off the front steps. We chose to get married facing the house. Kara, at the Golf Club house, rented the spot to us and was a pure joy to work with as well! -

We were somewhat apprehensive because we started with one employee, Grabby and.ended with Jessica. However, our concerns quickly dissipated after our first meeting with Jessica. She was courteous, friendly, flexible and a delight to work with. My daughter's wedding was divine and the entire staff at Southwood was awesome. Seeing the SouthWood House for the first time was love at first sight. It was absolutely beautiful. We chose it for our ceremony and reception venue. I was intimidated by all the coordination that had to be done--renting chairs, tents, bringing a caterer, bartender, etc. However, the staff was more than helpful in flexibility and working with our schedules. The booking is a bit pricey compared to other places, but we were able to fit it in with some careful budgeting. We decided to forego decorating and just use the beautiful grounds. Our wedding was in early spring so, the flowers were just beginning to bloom. If you want an intimate, adult-only reception, I would recommend the SouthWood House. The inside takes you back to the Antebellum Age with the built-ins, ornate furniture, and vaulted ceilings. The atmosphere encouraged everyone to relax and mingle. -

We had a phenomenal wedding experience at Southwood! The Southwood House property is so beautiful and provided the North Florida backdrop I had envisioned with its beautiful trees and Spanish moss. People kept commenting how beautiful the grounds were. We rented the cottages which provided a great place for the guys to get ready, the band's green room, and a place for the onsite babysitters so our adult guests could enjoy their evening. The staff was always so nice when we "dropped by" to check out the grounds. I would make that decision again in a heartbeat. Thanks to Jessica and all the grounds crew for making it so beautiful! -

The moment I saw this house I fell in love. You can have an out door wedding that still feels warm and comforting. Very southern feel to it. Since the house is so grand and the out side of it looks amazing you really don't need a lot of decorations. Kind of pricey but totally worth it. -

We had our wedding outdoors at Southwood and it was beautiful. The venue is great because you can get ready upstairs while all of the set up is going on. The only issue we had was parking and the light requirement for the back parking lot. It was just a detail I wish Southwood took care of. -

First of all the venue is gorgeous, everything that I could have wanted. When I first booked with Southwood October 2016, Jessica Worden was the wedding coordinator and she was amazing. Then in May 2017, things started getting a little frustrating. My fiance and I met with Jessica during a menu tasting, she mentioned in the conversation that she was "so sorry that she would not be there on my wedding"!! I asked her what she meant, and she said that she forgot to tell me that she would be leaving in August and nobody would be replacing her as the wedding coordinator/day of planner. So that was very frustrating. After I found a new day of coordinator (Kim Dyke with Taylor'd Southern Events), I found out on the news that the Southwood Clubhouse/Golf Course was up for sale. I was not notified by the staff there to see how/if it would affect my wedding. I had to reach out to them.
I was told that the Food&Beverage manager along with the Pro Shop manager would be taking over the wedding operations, so I began working with them and planning out our layout/menu/etc. My future mother in law was working with him as well to coordinate the rehearsal dinner. This was in August. I had no reason to contact them until two weeks before the wedding (which is where we are currently at) and give them my menu and headcount. Well come to find out BOTH of the managers no longer work there. Again, I wasn't notified. So I am currently scrambling trying to reach out to the new Food and Beverage Manager and see if they will honor what I was promised by the previous managers. At this point I am super frustrated and honestly, if I could get my money back and it wasn't so close to the wedding I would probably cancel and go elsewhere. It really is a shame because the venue is a really good value and they take care of everything. I would just use caution if you consider Southwood. Who know, with the sale they may not even coordinate weddings it will only be a venue site. -

The reviews I read when I booked the Southwood House were great. They all talked about how great Cara is, who was the Director of Sales and the point of contact for events at the Southwood House. Those reviews are accurate, and Cara was great. But she left Southwood for a new position in December, which was halfway through my engagement. When Cara worked at Southwood, all of my calls and emails were answered promptly, usually within the hour. After Cara left, though, the responsiveness changed drastically. The new point of contact was Beth, who is the GM over all of Southwood. I sent her multiple emails and left voicemails with her that went unanswered or were not even acknowledged for 2+ weeks. My mother in law did the rehearsal dinner at the Southwood Clubhouse and had similar problems getting in touch with Beth. The lack of response to emails and voicemails is simply unacceptable with the kind of money we spent to have our rehearsal dinner and wedding at their facilities. I understand that Beth has other duties, as she is the GM of Southwood, but if she doesn't have time to respond to an email or phone call a month before a wedding, then she needs to hire someone. She didn't even acknowledge when I was finally able to talk with her (by calling her cell phone number that my mother in law gave me), that she didn't respond to my emails or phone calls, even when I said something about it. I thought that was highly unprofessional. The lack of responsiveness to questions that i needed answered caused much undue stress on the already stressful last few weeks before my wedding.
On the plus side: The cost of the rental includes acces to the house the day before your wedding for rehearsal and other vendors to set up as needed. We used 2 of their bartenders for the reception who were great and was a better value than going through a bartending service. They are flexible with alcohol and catering. We supplied our own alcohol and a family friend did the catering, which saved us a lot of money. The house and grounds are absolutely gorgeous. We continue to receive compliments on how beautiful the venue was.
The bottom line is that Southwood needs to hire a new Director of Sales to replace Cara. Beth obviously has too much on her plate. -
