When I was planning my wedding, my best friend shared one of her biggest regrets from her own big day: her photographer.
Her photos were… fine. The same cookie-cutter images — walking down the aisle, cutting the cake, standard family and bridal party groupings.
"My wedding photos look like everyone else’s. I wish I had chosen someone who would capture the candid moments I didn’t get to fully appreciate because everything was such a blur."
We took that advice to heart when choosing our photographer. And when we found Joe and Katye, we knew we’d found our people.
They are everything you hope for in wedding vendors — warm, professional, flexible, reliable, and patient. On the big day, we loved watching how they put everyone — from our anxious 2-year-old flower girl to my equally anxious 88-year-old grandmother (who was officiating!) — completely at ease.
And then their photojournalist alter-egos kicked in. We got so many comments from guests amazed by their ability to be everywhere and nowhere at once — up on tables above the dance floor, shooting through windows — they even captured an incredible photo of my husband and me through a Christmas tree, giving the image this magical fairy light effect. Their energy and creativity are simply unmatched.
I cried the first time I saw our photos. Joe and Katye did the impossible — they captured all the joy, love and magic from that day in a way that feels exactly like us. I got everything I hoped for: an embarrassment of riches of photos where I look like a movie star, and a collection that feels totally unique to our day and our story.
We truly can’t wait to work with them again for future milestones. If you’re lucky enough to book them — do it. You won’t regret it. -

I looked at a bunch of photographers, but when I found Joe and Katye, I just loved the style of their work. It felt very natural and real, capturing unexpected moments so beautifully. We did an engagement/family session with them in August 2020 (with great results) and got our wedding sneak peeks last week and are thrilled. We can’t wait to see the rest! They were easy to work with, flexible when we had to reschedule due to COVID, and got incredible shots while we barely noticed they were there. Do not hesitate to hire these two! -

We absolutely loved working with The Happy Couple! We were married in November 2020 and so many of our wedding plans changed due to COVID-19. Joe and Katye were wonderful every step of the way. They were very supportive and understanding of each new iteration of the wedding we shared with them. They even helped us look for new photo locations when our original location fell through. On the day of our wedding, they were professional and followed all safety precautions. They were prepared and great working with all the craziness the day threw at us, including a rainy outdoor photo shoot.
We loved all the pictures of our big day that they shared with us. Both our preview photos and the entire album of photos were sent to us earlier than we expected. Having two photographers was great because we feel like they caught each special moment of day. We couldn't have asked for better photographers! -

This review is long overdue! My wife and I got married outside of Newburyport in February, 2020 right before COVID-19 came to Boston. We had an amazing experience working with Katye and Joe. Our biggest priority is that we wanted to feel at ease with our photographers, and we were looking for photographers who had captured diverse weddings and diverse couples. Based on the photos we saw of past weddings The Happy Couple had photographed we knew we had found the right people!
We spoke with Katye and Joe quite a few times prior to our wedding. They really wanted to get to know us, who we were as a couple and what we were hoping for. They asked us thoughtful questions and put us at ease.
The day of our wedding it was wonderful having two photographers. They were able to capture special moments between us and our family and friends from all different angles around the venue. The most important thing we wanted was candid photos capturing special moments, and they delivered on this 10X over! We look back on our photos with such happiness. Would definitely recommend Katye and Joe to any couple! Thank you, Katye and Joe! xx -

The Happy Couple (Joe and Kayte) were incredibly easy to work with. From the time we started looking for photographers until delivery of the final photos, we were struck by the ease of the entire process. Initially, my wife and I video-chatted with Joe and were impressed by how kind and knowledgeable he was. He walked us through expectations for a wedding of our size while also taking the time to get to know us as a couple. The conversation made such an impression on us because other photographers that we had spoken to had not been nearly as personable and professional.
Right before the wedding, we spoke with Joe about how we envisioned our wedding unfolding. He was so helpful in shaping our day, helping us zero in on the flow of the day and the exact kind of portraits/candids that we wanted captured. And, on the actual wedding day, Joe and Kayte took excellent pictures without being at all intrusive. Looking at some of our pictures, there are moments captured that we’ll treasure forever, and my wife and I don’t at all remember Joe or Kayte being in our vicinity.
The photos from our wedding have been our absolute favorite keepsake. Sharing them with our family and friends has allowed us to relive the best day of our lives. We could not have asked for a better experience with photographers. The Happy Couple have our highest recommendation

We love Joe and Katye Brier! When my husband and I started planning our wedding, we decided our must have was an amazing photography team - with two photographers. Joe and Katye are this team! We met Joe nearly two years ago when we were planning our September 2019 wedding in Boston. We were impressed with his work and loved the vibrant colors and unique detailed shots his portfolio included.
We were in a bit of a unique situation because we were living abroad, but planning our wedding for Boston. Joe was extremely flexible, worked around our schedule, and worked around the time difference. We had our engagement photos in Boston in July 2018 and fell in love with his work all over again. Joe is great to work with, he's funny, kind, and patient. We couldn't wait to see what he could do at our wedding.
Fast forward to September 2019, Joe worked out all the timeline details with us to ensure the wedding day ran smoothly, and even threw in some buffer time in case something ran long. Joe and his wife Katye ran around seamlessly for 8 hours capturing our perfect day. From the detailed shots of our rings, vow books, decorations and attire, to the portraits in the Garden and everything in between, Joe and Katye did an outstanding job.
We received a sneak peek shortly after the wedding and were instantly in love and relived our perfect day. When we received the full portfolio - all in color and in black and white - we were blown away. The pictures are incredible! We've already recommended the Happy Couple to our friends and plan to use them for future life events. Thank you, Joe and Katye! -

Choosing a wedding photographer is a daunting task, but we absolutely made the perfect choice picking The Happy Couple! We were lucky enough to have an engagement shoot, our wedding, and then a second reception all shot by the Happy Couple - and the pictures are flawless. Joe and Katye are amazing to work with and have the ability to capture every special moment with an artistic eye. What they do with natural lighting and contrast is unbeatable and it makes for photos that are not only beautiful, but are art pieces. All the photos we received will be forever treasured. Joe & Katye are hands down the best photographers anyone could pick to capture all the moments of your wedding day.
Their style and ease at which they both work harmoniously together makes them the people I would select over and over again. They are highly experienced and professional which made the whole process leading up to the wedding day and everything on the wedding day a breeze.
What I love so much about their photos was their photojournalistic approach to the moments of whimsy, emotion, and beauty that comes from genuine, unposed moments. Every time I look through the photographs they took from my wedding day I feel like I am reliving the day over again.
There is no one better to photograph your special day than The Happy Couple Photography!

Jackie Sent on 08/03/2015When it comes to wedding photography (and photography in general), I can't recommend Joe and Katye enough. Their work is beautiful, timeless, and they are both delightful to work with. We were pretty overwhelmed with the sheer number of choices and styles to choose from. As a journalist and photographer myself, I was relatively picky.. We wanted someone who could take an amazing picture in the camera and wouldn't rely on post-processing to create whatever style is "in" right now, and also someone who could beautifully photograph the planned portraits and key moments of the day, as well as the amazing moments throughout the day that may otherwise be missed. I stumbled upon The Happy Couple on a DC Wedding Blog and several of their photos moved me to tears! They are both trained in photojournalism and it shows in their ability to see small, sweet moments and capture them beautifully. They are also so much fun to be around! After my fiancé and I met with Joe, we canceled our other photography interviews because we had so much fun talking to him, we knew he was the type of person we would want to be around on our wedding day! He also made the process incredibly easy and even let us add a few extra hours to our contract just weeks before the wedding when we realized our timeline was getting too tight. Even when things got a bit crazy right before we had to head down for photos, Katye was incredibly calm and got so many amazing photos. My fiancé and his groomsmen loved having Joe around as they got ready. We were ecstatic when we got our photos back, both from the engagement session and the wedding day. Turnaround was fast (about 3 weeks for engagement, 4 weeks for wedding) and the photos are GORGEOUS. Katye and Joe are two of the best wedding photographers in DC and know how to capture the emotion and beauty of the day. You will not be disappointed- hiring The Happy Couple was the best decision we made for our wedding! -

Emily Sent on 11/20/2012Amazing! Choosing our photographer was one of the most difficult choices of our wedding, mostly because we were so picky. I searched through thousands of pictures from different wedding photographers, but all of them left me desiring more from the pictures. I didn't like how heavily edited most of them were and I could tell it was just the photographer's attempt to cover up the fact that he/she hadn't caught the light right when taking the pictures. Then my life changed. I stumbled upon The Happy Couple's blog and I was immediately sold. As far as I'm concerned, Joe and Katye are the ONLY choice when it comes to wedding photographers in this area. They really know how to both capture the essence of your day and tell the story of your day through pictures. You hardly even know they're around, but somehow they come back with hundreds of beautiful pictures. I highly recommend hiring both Katye & Joe because they have such different views of the world. This comes through in their pictures and leaves you with two sets of very different, yet compatible, pictures rather than just two sets of similar pictures that happen to come from a different person's camera. Joe seems to focus on making sure he captures the complete story in beautiful pictures, which gives Katye the ability to keep her eye out for extremely artistic and beautiful shots. They may disagree with me on that and they certainly never told me that was their goal or plan, but that's what came through for me in our pictures. I have already recommended them to anyone I know looking for a photographer (even if the person doesn't need or want my opinion) and I honestly can't imagine being any happier with our pictures. The Torpedo Factory was not an easy place to shoot because of the odd lighting, but they managed to figure that out and capture the light in a beautiful way. Hands down the best choice we made for our wedding. -

Joe was a pleasure to work with from the first moment we contacted him - he was prompt, informative and easy to work with. Their photography approach was exactly what we were looking for - clean, beautiful and elegant photos...with a touch of playfulness. The flexibility of their services and packages also fit perfectly into what we wanted for our event. We booked both Joe and Katye for the big day, and were thrilled to see both of their photos and renditions of the day - they complement each other perfectly, but each have their own perspective. Emily Sent on 01/05/2012My friend recommend The Happy Couple to me and I could not be more pleased. I think Joe is totally awesome and was willing to go above and beyond for myself and my husband. We did pictures around the Monument and Lincoln in 30 degree weather and Joe was a rockstar. All my guests loved the photo booth at the wedding and I got many compliments on how amazing he was. I have not yet received my pictures (this is only day 4 post wedding) - but I have no doubt that they will be any less than amazing. I cannot thank Joe enough for making me feel FANTASTIC throughout the entire process. I will recommend Joe to everyone I know!!!! -

Joe was professional yet very personable, a great combination for someone so intimately involved with you and your guests on your special day. He was also very accommodating, traipsing all over Old Town Alexandria so we could take advantage of the area's cobblestone streets and water front location. We got our photos very quickly as well, about a month after the wedding day. -

For those that come across The Happy Couple's website however, it should be one of the easiest decisions. In fact, after I met with Joe from The Happy Couple, I canceled the rest of my photographer appointments. On the actual wedding day, Joe did not disappoint. He came right on time and had already been to both the ceremony and reception site to set up. He was so easy to work with and you couldn't' even tell he was there. And then, just a few weeks afterward, we received our pictures... which are PHENOMENAL. I have heard so many complaints from my friends that their photographers did not get pictures to them in a timely manner or that key shots were missed... with the Happy Couple Photography, you can rest assured that will not happen. We seriously could not be happier with our pictures! Thank you again Joe and Katye! -

Karen Sent on 05/14/2010I'm so excited to be Joe and Katye's first reviewer on Wedding Wire! We were delighted to work with them and the photographs they produced are first rate.
My husband and I are in our 50's--a lot older than most of the reviewers and certainly older than most of the couples that we saw on all the photographers' websites. However, we wanted a "real" wedding with all the trimming. We were aiming for elegant, tasteful with a great party at the end.
We interviewed five different photographers. Katye and Joe both have advanced degrees in photojournalism. They met in grad school (I think) and they got married a couple of years ago. Through the interview process, we learned a lot about what we did and did not want. We started out thinking that we didn't want/need an engagement session, but evolved into believing that it would be a good idea. We did not want the photographer to produce the albums--I personally like doing that kind of thing and just wanted a CD to work with. We narrowed it down to two photographers and I wrote and told them exactly what we wanted.
It seems that a number of photographers have set packages--here is what you get and here is what it costs. The packages included items that we had no desire to have. Joe and Katye were willing to price just what we wanted. That explains their high mark for flexibility.
We arranged for an engagement photo shoot in October. My husband and I love good wine and we spent a few weekends before that scouting out vineyards in northern Virginia that had photographic appeal. We ended up using Hillsborough Vineyards in Loudoun County. Very scenic and lots of different locations to provide diversity in the photos. I'm so glad we changed our minds and did the engagement session. It helped us get to know one another, we felt much more relaxed and confident with them and we got some wonderful pictures of a very special day. Afterwards, we took them to dinner at the reception venue so they could get a sneak peak.
Joe handles most of the correspondence and he was always very responsive to my e-mails and questions. We met a week or so before the wedding and went over the timeline, the people in attendance and the photographs that were important to us.
When the big day arrived, they were at my house before I got back from my hair appointment! They were always on time or early. They took lots of pictures of the "getting ready" phase and one of them rode in the limo with us to the church. My new step granddaughters (ages 7 and 9) provided LOTS of photo ops for them!
The ceremony and reception pictures are terrific. They caught so many spontaneous moments of emotion--which is just what we wanted. Now I can't wait to get my hands on the computer files so I can get to work on creating albums!

Joe and Katye just got married themselves and are a cute, down to earth couple, just like my new husband and I.
Joe and Katye showed a lot of excitement right from the beginning and their enthusiasm for my wedding was wonderful. You can tell they truly love photographing weddings. Katye actually went as far as helping me make sure my fiance didn't see me before the wedding.

Katye and Joe were a dream to work with. We had to adjust our wedding plans quite a bit in response to COVID and could not have asked for a pair of more talented, flexible, and experienced photographers. Most of the day took place on a 50' boat at sea and Katye and Joe really rose to the challenge of shooting in such an unconventional venue, delivering so many beautiful, authentic, and creative shots. They are a fantastic team. We couldn't be more pleased or recommend them enough and absolutely treasure our photos! -

Amy Sent on 04/11/2012Joe was amazing! From the moment we met him we knew we would want to work with him. He took beautiful pictures and we were very happy with all of our pictures. The only reason I didn't give him a perfect rating in Quality and Value is because we were disappointed that we didn't have any solo pictures (staged) of both the bride and the groom. He did ask us to tell him all portrait pictures we wanted, but we forgot to mention those. He's great at action/candid shots (think more magazine type), which have become our favorite pictures. Some of the family shots we wish he had looked at as we took them, because someone's eyes were always closed in a couple, and we thought he should have paid attention to that. But other then that the pictures were wonderful and they are reasonably priced and he is great to work with. You will feel at ease with him through out the whole process, which is very important! -

They don’t really capture emotional moments unless it’s the ceremony or something planned- horrible at candids- most of the reception is underexposed. They are horrible with lighting. The only good photos are during perfect daylight conditions. The female photographer does super weird compositions without a purpose- then calls it artistic. I have a video of 1st dance where you can see that the photog doesn’t move even once! He just waited for us to turn towards him instead of running around getting different shots/angles. The entire wedding was planned around the photography because I was a wedding photographer for 12 years. I made sure they had perfect conditions and they clearly have not been formally trained. I was shocked by the results after seeing their portfolio. So disappointing.also 2 photogs, 20 guests and many people not photographed-one of the reasons we chose was because of drone- but no photos-we paid for fireworks, and for extra time so they would photograph it. No photos of guests during that- 20 min taking photos of our backs with fireworks- waited a long time to post about this- but I felt I needed to.
