Seamless Wedding Day
We had both our ceremony (North Ballroom) and reception (South Ballroom) at the Purdue Memorial Union. Kyla, was our point of contact and she was absolutely incredible to work with. In fact the entire staff we came across was phenomenal- to the point where even our guests complimented it (hotel & venue staff included). Everything went off without a hitch due to their high level communication and efficiency. I could not be more grateful to have had my wedding at the place where our love story began.
I even booked the Anniversary drawing room for getting ready with my bridesmaids. We paid for catered brunch , and the staff was excellent. The food at the actual wedding was mouth watering as well.
If you are debating booking them- do it! The cost for high level and quality service beats out so many others with what they include and service add one they have available. We had both our ceremony (North Ballroom) and reception (South Ballroom) at the Purdue Memorial Union. We had our reception in the Purdue Memorial Union, North Ballroom. The food was amazing! We worked with their wedding planner, Casey, and she was very flexible and professional in assisting us with our wedding. The best part was on the day of the wedding, the Purdue Memorial Union Staff took care of setting up for the reception by working with the cake and flower vendors when they delivered. It made my day less stressful and I recommend this venue if your are in the Lafayette or West Lafayette area!We had our reception in the Purdue Memorial Union, North Ballroom. The food was amazing! The Purdue Union is a wonderful place to have a reception. You do have to use their catering, but their food is fabulous. Having our reception at the Purdue Union was a tremendous deal. You don't have to be Purdue students to have your reception there, and included in your package are your centerpieces and decorations (you can bring in your own still too if you want), all the food, ice sculpture, beautiful set up and presentation, white glove service, 'bride & groom' chocolate covered strawberries, and lots more!Having our reception at the Purdue Union was a tremendous deal. We had the ceremony and reception in the same ballroom. Purdue staff made the event easy. Service was excellent. We had a generous taste testing. They cut and served the cake at no additional cost and with a certain amount of food purchase the room is free. We originally worked with Ashley Hutchcraft for setting up all our details. She moved on to a new position and we finished working with Kathryn Walters. Both of them were wonderful to work with, though most of our planning was done with Ashley. She was very flexible with us for moving the location of our reception to a different room, getting the layout of the room altered, and picking our food stuffs. The location was beautiful and the food was so good! Our guests couldn't stop raving about the complimentary chocolate covered strawberries we had received. The service during the reception was exceptional! I only wished there had been more Moscato (they ran out, but the Chardonnay was good too).We originally worked with Ashley Hutchcraft for setting up all our details. The Purdue Memorial Union was a great value for the service. Full sit down dinners began at just $21. They had a wide choice of food, and it actually tasted extremely good! Casey Dexter took charge from day one. She gave us several ideas of what we could do during the reception. She also provided names of musicians in the area. On the day of the wedding, her team set up the reception area with our decorations at no additional charge. I was fully pleased at what the Union did for our wedding, especially since it was during a Purdue home football game. I would definitely recommend contacting the Union for your wedding! The Purdue Memorial Union was a great value for the service. Full sit down dinners began at just $21. It was beautiful and they had everything we wanted. We got married in the east/west faculty lounge on the second floor. The coordinator was hard to reach at times. One issue we had was there was no clip on mic for our reverend so it lead to my husband running around like a crazy person before but it all worked out. They were very flexible with us and we got some gorgeous pictures around Purdue before the ceremony. It was beautiful and they had everything we wanted. We used the Anniversary Drawing Room for about 45 guests for our Saturday evening reception. The room looked beautiful, the staff was very attentive, and the food was marvelous!
However, when we left for about an hour to ride the Boilermaker Express (a pre-planned activity), we came back and our reception had been shut down due to a miscommunication between our coordinator and the catering staff. We were very disappointed, especially because everyone had come in from out of state to attend the wedding and our reception was shut down by 8pm, which resulted in most of our guests going back to the hotel with nothing to do.
That being said, we spoke with our coordinator about the situation and she not only took full responsibility but also offered a sizeable refund as compensation for the situation, which made us feel a lot better about what had happened. Some better and more clear communication up front could have prevented the situation, so if you're planning a wedding from out of state, don't be afraid to call or email as many times as it takes to iron out every detail of your ceremony and reception! We used the Anniversary Drawing Room for about 45 guests for our Saturday evening reception. The Union was a great venue and the planning staff was very helpful. The service on our wedding day was great, but the food was disappointing; it did not taste like it did at our tasting. In some cases it was undercooked. Otherwise, we had a great experience. There is no better place at Purdue to have your reception--Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms are absolutely beautiful settings for a wedding reception. We worked with Ashley, who for the most part was easy to work with. However, during our planning process, she was absent a lot, which meant we were constantly talking with different people, and a lot of our communication got lost. We were not given access to our reception hall until the morning OF THE WEDDING--which was extremely hard to deal with. If this was going to be the only option, it should have been told to us early in the process, and we probably would have booked the previous day as well, to give us plenty of time to organize everything.
Our bartenders were horrible, denying a lot of our guests drinks--one of our groomsmen was told he'd "had enough" about ten minutes into our cocktail hour, which was definitely not the case. For the amount of money we paid for the bar service, we expected a more professional staff--but keep in mind, the staff is all student workers. Also, while it was in our contract that if the head table's meals were not ready at the beginning, it was ok to start serving the other wedding guests--all fine, except our head table WAS SERVED LAST! My husband and I did not even get to eat our meals, as by the time they got to our table, we'd been waiting for over 45 minutes, and had to start going and thanking our guests for coming. The final straw was with our special request meals--our photographer, who was pregnant at the time and has a severe lactose allergy, had requested a lactose-free meal, and was served one with cheese and cream sauce. The Union was an absolutely beautiful setting, but I would not recommend the service part of working with them. There is no better place at Purdue to have your reception--Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms are absolutely beautiful settings for a wedding reception. Poor quality food and service
Hosted a rehearsal dinner at the Purdue Memorial Union in the Anniversary Drawing Room on Sept 30, 2022. Paid $60/person for a banquet buffet. Was served diced boiled frozen carrots as the “roasted root vegetables”, canned sliced beets as the “beet salad”, grilled chicken breast instead of “bone-in chicken breast”, frozen lemon tart pie with cool whip edging instead of “key lime pie with torched meringue”, unassembled Caesar salad, instant mashed potatoes. Ordered from the Union Club Hotel (Marriott-operated) but the food came from the Purdue Food Company. Quality was on par with hospital food. Event coordinator was very slow to respond because it always seemed to be her day off. Parking was $5.00/car. Inadequate signage and even hotel staff couldn’t help people find the event space.Hosted a rehearsal dinner at the Purdue Memorial Union in the Anniversary Drawing Room on Sept 30, 2022. The coordinator (Ashley Hutchcraft) provided by the union was one of the most unorganized and unprofessional people I had to deal with. For starters, she gave away or original wedding date that we had a hold on. She was suppose to call us if someone else was interested in that day. She never did and when we contacted her she claims we gave her the wrong cell number (not true). Therefore, we had to call all of our other vendors (photographer, photo booth, dj, priest) and have them switch the day. Luckily our other vendors were amazing and accommodated the change without additional fees. She never provided any compensation for her mistake.
In addition, two weeks before our wedding she sends us a preview of what to expect for the bill and she has our food wrong on the order. We then had to confirm with her the correct food. However, at the reception, they still served us and our guests the wrong food.
The week of our wedding she contacts me and says she moved our layout in order to not block doors to the kitchen. This information would have been helpful the first time I asked if there were any layout restrictions. I should not have been so stressed from her the week of my wedding.
Lastly, we were suppose to have our wedding suite paid for since we had so many guests staying at the union hotel. When we checked in Friday night before the wedding they inform us that they have no rooms assigned to us not only for Friday (which we had arranged 2 months before) but also for Saturday night. This meant that we had to check out and check back in on Saturday (our wedding!!) to a different room.
I feel it was her decision to go into the wedding business. She needs to be more professional. Her brides should not have to fix all of her mistakes themselves; especially on their wedding day. She should have claimed responsibility for her mistakes and provided some compensation, which never occurred. The coordinator (Ashley Hutchcraft) provided by the union was one of the most unorganized and unprofessional people I had to deal with.
