Book Old Wide Awake, you won't regret it! From the beginning, the staff was so wonderful and helpful to work with. Margaret answered all our questions and made the planning process seamless. As a wedding planner, I thoroughly enjoyed working at this venue for my clients wedding and would absolutely love to work there again. From the gorgeous getting ready rooms/balcony upstairs, to the updated catering area in the back, to the endless beautiful locations to take photos, to the built in bar under the house, this venue has it all! You won't be disappointed with this venue!

Elegance and Charm with Local History
Old Wide Awake was the perfect backdrop and partner for our wedding. Having Margaret as our fearless wedding planner was an added bonus. She was so knowledgeable about the property, and knew how to make every last detail work: from timeline to reception layout, getting ready to guest arrivals, all the way to our departure. All of the staff at OWA were so friendly and easy to work with, and as one of the first weddings under new ownership, it was absolutely seamless. We were so honored to be under their care, and they truly gave us one of the best and most memorable days of our lives. I hope one day we get invited to another OWA wedding just so we get to experience the magic again!

Winter Wedding At Old Wide Awake
We had our winter wedding at Old Wide Awake. The venue is beautifully kept, the wrap around porch was a must have (it was cold and rainy on our wedding day), and the oak lined driveway gives a perfect back drop that captures the low country feel. Margaret was extremely helpful from start to finish. If we ever had questions we did not hesitate to reach out.

A Fairytale Setting for Our Daughter's Wedding
Our family chose OWA for our venue over several other options and were VERY pleased with that decision. OWA exudes Lowcountry charm from the moment you first drive in under the alley of oaks dripping in Spanish moss. At OWA the venue is yours for the entire day which provides flexibility in scheduling for everything that has to occur on your special day. Our planner quit three weeks before our black tie wedding. Margaret McKenzie, the venue manager and wedding planner extraordinaire, stepped in to save the day. If you are booking OWA, I highly recommend having Margaret as your planner! OWA worked with us to make our vision of the day come to life. Our caterer CRU did an absolutely AMAZING job of catering - from fabulous food and drinks to a precision style of serving. Many guests told us they felt like they were at a State Dinner. We received SO many compliments on OWA as a wedding venue that emanates Southern charm and hospitality.

Getting ready there was an exceptional part of the day—the rooms were lovely and spacious enough to accommodate a large wedding party along with the hair and makeup team. Margaret was professional, responsive, and consistently supportive throughout the entire process. She worked seamlessly with our wedding planner and the vendors. From the ceremony to the farewell, the whole experience felt warm, joyful, and genuinely magical! Best wedding venue ever
This venue is PERFECTION. We just got married here on October 25th, 2025, and it was the best day. This venue has southern charm written all over it. So simple and elegant. If you are looking for a wedding venue that says "The Notebook" then this is the place. Margaret is amazing and everyone on staff was very helpful and made my day incredible.

Amazing to work with!!
My husband and I got married here on October 18, 2025 and to say it was a dream would be an understatement!!!!! Everything from start to finish was such a smooth process. Our property manager on the day of was a gem - she was amazing vibes and so helpful. All of our vendors worked together so easily here. Out of town wedding
We just got married June 2024 at OWA! We had an out of town wedding because we love the Charleston area. We stumbled upon the venue online then scheduled a tour, we immediately fell in love. The venue manager, Margaret McKenzie was amazing. She was very responsive throughout the whole process and made sure to provide thorough details on what to expect. Being an out of town bride, i had no issues with OWA or any of the vendors they recommended. Highly recommend using this property for your wedding. Everything was perfect thanks to the beautiful grounds and their upkeep as well as all those involved in facilitating the day of events!

Old Wide Awake is breathtaking from the moment you drive up on the property. It is a beautiful, historic charm located between Charleston and Edisto, South Carolina.
My husband and I were honored to have Margaret McKenzie as our wedding planner. She takes pride in getting to know not only the bride to be, but the groom to be as well. Once she establishes a relationship with both parties, she so easily guides you on where to begin building your dream wedding.

Perfect Backdrop
It looks just like the pictures (maybe even better than the pictures)! Wonderful back drop for the ceremony and party. Easy contact with the venue coordinator. Comes with full use of house, including a downstairs kitchen and an upstairs bridal suite. Beautiful and well kept grounds with a built in bar, big plus when trying to save money! Large porch for guests to enjoy. Well kept and clean bathrooms on ground level. Large area for vendors to set up and prep that is out of site of guests. Wheelchair ramp to porch. Fire place area by the pond, which we used as a cigar bar area.

The best venue!
Old wide awake is affordable comparative to other venues in Charleston, plus you get the entire day there. They were accommodating and super helpful throughout the day. The property is absolutely beautiful and well maintained. We got married at the park and had our reception at the house and it was absolutely perfect. On top of that Margaret took over our wedding planning after we had issues with our original planner! She is so kind, organized, ready to jump in when needed and does a great job getting the crowd to listen and staying on time throughout the day! She made our day of dreams come true!

Old Wide Awake is the best!
OWA is the best wedding venue in the Charleston area hands down. They are extremely well priced and you get the use of the entire grounds and house for the whole day! It was perfect for us to get ready on the day of the wedding and not have to worry about logistics of getting ready some where else. Hair and makeup were done on site and it was so easy to be able to use the first floor for the guys and the second floor for the ladies. There are several gorgeous locations on the property to have the ceremony as well. By the pond or trees but we chose on the steps as we felt it was the best location for our time of year (October)! The staff at OWA is absolutely the best! They will help you with anything you need and Margaret is the amazing! Bonus if you are lucky enough to book her as your wedding planner too!

Stunning Wedding Venue
Choosing Old Wide Awake was one of the best decisions we made and I truly cannot think of a better and more perfect place for us to have had our special day. Not only is the venue absolutely stunning, it is also super affordable compared to a lot of other venues in Charleston. Our planner Margaret McKenzie made the wedding planning process a lot less stressful and the day was so seamless. A hidden gem!
Margaret is the best! When we booked our wedding at Old Wide Awake, we knew we had to have Margaret as our coordinator. She was such a helpful resource throughout every step of the planning process. She has fantastic vendor recommendations, so much insight when it comes to wedding customs, she’s organized, detailed, and clearly well experienced. Margaret knows Old Wide Awake inside and out, and having her as our contact for the venue and coordination was an added bonus as we had one less vendor to loop in. She went above and beyond to make our big day so special and magical. She ensured that all set up was taken care of so that we could enjoy our morning, she facilitated the logistics of my husband and I’s first look (taking extra precaution to make sure he didn’t accidentally see me before he was supposed to), she guided us through our guest tables during dinner and helped us gracefully move from table to table to greet our guests, and she made sure all of our belongings made it to the right cars after our exit. We were taken care of so well! She is a top notch coordinator and the sweetest person. Her care for her couples shows in every aspect of her work. We truly couldn’t have pulled it off without her!
Old Wide Awake was the perfect venue for our wedding! I was adamant about an outdoor venue but didn’t want just a field with a tent so Old Wide Awake was a lovely find. The venue is so versatile and you can really customize the layout to suit your style and guest count. We really didn’t have to buy many decorations because the venue is so charming and beautiful on it’s own! I especially loved the bridal suite and second floor balcony that my bridesmaids and I got to enjoy while we got ready. We are so happy that we went with Old Wide Awake for our special day!

The views were fantastic, our contacts were flexible and forthcoming, and the location was PERFECT for an outdoor wedding (we had our ceremony by the pond and the reception under the tent adjacent to the ceremony spot). All of our guests were complimentary of the sheer beauty of the grounds, the house, and the "energy" that OWA offers. We could not have been happier with the result! The one thing we regret not doing? Offering spray for the no-see-ums which were out in full force during the ceremony. We noticed no mosquitos at any point, which was amazing! But those no-see-ums were relentless (not a big surprise near a pond in April on a warm day). Make "No Natz" part of your wedding favors and you're covered, though! :) Thank you again, OWA!!

Perfect Venue + Best Wedding Planner Ever
Our wedding at Old Wide Awake Plantation was absolutely perfect. The venue is gorgeous with moss covered oak trees lining the gravel driveway all the way up to the beautiful, historic house that sits next to a small pond with a lovely fountain. It’s got quite the Southern charm! We chose to have our ceremony on the venue grounds right in front of the pond where they’ve built an arbor and it was picturesque. The house itself was the perfect setting for our cocktail hour and reception with its wide wrap around porches and large patio on the ground floor that could accommodate all of our guests. The house was also great for getting ready as you have access to it all day. The upstairs has very large rooms which are perfect for the bride to get ready in. The upstairs also has a wide wrap around porch that overlooks the grounds and was great for our bridal lunch the day of the wedding.
We hired Margaret McKenzie, the venue coordinator, to be our wedding planner and that was the best decision we made! She helped us pull our wedding off without a hitch despite having to reschedule three times due to the pandemic. She truly wants your wedding to be all that you want it to be and all that you hope it will be and she works tirelessly to make it happen. She is very knowledgeable about vendors in the Charleston area and provided us with great suggestions. She is also very organized and meticulous and will help you plan your wedding down to the very last detail which truly gave us peace of mind and the ability to simply enjoy every moment of our wedding day. We are so grateful that we chose Margaret and cannot thank her enough for everything.

The perfect venue!
We were so excited to have our wedding here! The inside of the house as well as the grounds were stunning and just what we wanted for our low country wedding. They were so easy to work with and they answered any questions we had. We had a wonderful experience at Old Wide Awake and so did our guests! If you haven’t booked your date yet, hurry! This wedding venue was stunning! It embodies the southern charm of Charleston while also being in a quiet location!
Margaret McKenzie manages the site and was wonderful to work with! She made the venue available to us at all times during the planning stage and even let us bury a bottle of bourbon on the property as a southern tradition for no rain on your wedding day! (It definitely held back some rain on our big day) As a bonus to the venue, We actually hired Margaret as our wedding planner since she made booking the venue such an easy process. She helped us pull off a wedding in less than 6 months while everyone was also rebooking COVID weddings at the same time. She offered great vendor suggestions and managed our vendors excellently on our wedding day.
On our wedding day, the venue was immaculate! The bridal suite was a great area for the bridal party to get ready in while letting the guys run wild downstairs! The grounds keeper also executed the ceremony perfectly by making sure no cars entered down the long driveway during our ceremony. Needless to say this venue made our day special and we will always cherish the help Margaret gave us to execute/create a perfect wedding! Our wedding at Old Wide Awake this past fall was absolutely beautiful! From the very beginning Margaret McKenzie (venue coordinator) was incredibly responsive and made me feel comfortable when inquiring about the venue. After booking a date, I decided to hire Margaret as my wedding planner as well and that made all the difference! She knows the venue inside and out, as well as so many vendors in the Charleston area. She made wedding planning so much easier. And all her suggestions paid off because on the day of the wedding everything fell into place perfectly and was just amazing. You cannot go wrong with this venue! I am still receiving compliments from guests about how gorgeous everything was. And your pictures will turn out gorgeous, there are so many photo opportunities all over the grounds. The venue is also unique in that you get it for the entire day! Spectacular Experience
Margaret McKenzie and Old Wide Awake Plantation are exceptional. The quiet, magnificent house set just before the marshes and the park to the Stono River is stopped in time. I loved each piece of my experience. I grew up down here- it is difficult to find a place that is not tacky or overdone for the sake of tourists. The house and the land are reminiscent of every experience I had as a child- a soft silky breeze, the fresh smell of the river and flowing water nearby, and the vendors know exactly what to do and where to be. We had an amazing experience provided by Margaret. She is a stunning coordinator. I am certain, as with any large event, there were hang ups. I didn't see a single one. Every detail and minutiae was handled without a shred of evidence that it was anything but effortless. Her grace, poise, and elegant nature are exactly what any bride needs. My Husband and I had a spectacular day with brilliant sun which I am fairly certain Margaret also conjured as it rained every day around the wedding.

Perfect Wedding at Old Wide Awake Plantation
Last November, my fiancée at the time and I visited Old Wide Awake Plantation as we tried to find the perfect venue for our wedding. Margaret showed us around the house and grounds - with the oaks, moss, lake, and fountain, not to mention the beautiful house with multiple porches, we knew we had found our perfect venue. We quickly got our date set on the calendar as venues black book up quickly (especially coming off a Covid year).
Our wedding finally arrived last weekend, and everything about the venue was absolutely perfect. We loved it, our guests were in awe of the venue in all the same ways we were when we initially chose OWA. My wife and I were incredibly pleased with the entire ordeal - including having the rehearsal on-site the nite before.
Working with Margaret only added to the magic as she is genuinely excited and happy for all the couples who pick OWA for their wedding venue. We cannot say thank you enough!

We have been working closely with Margaret at Olde Wide Awake for years! As a small bakery in Charleston, we get asked to do wedding cakes pretty frequently - and Margaret has always made the process so smooth and easy for us. She facilitates conversations with the couples, and makes sure we are aware in the beginning of all their wants and needs, and making sure our needs are met as well. The process couldn’t be easier. Many couples don’t realize how important vendor relationships are, being “behind the scenes,” but it does make the day efficient and enjoyable for everyone involved in putting the wedding day together. Fantastic venue
Old Wide Awake Plantation is the perfect southern venue right outside of Charleston, SC. When my husband and I saw this venue, we knew immediately we wanted to get married there. After talking to Margaret, it was a done deal. Margaret and the entire staff at OWA are a dream to work with. They will make you, your bridal party, and guests feel like family. Exceptional experience!
Old Wide Awake was the perfect venue for our wedding on 03/19/21. The property is so charming and the house is absolutely stunning. Our guests came in from all over the country (many of whom had never visited the Charleston area before) and were able to get a real taste of what Southern Hospitality and charm looks like!
We hired Margaret McKenzie as our Wedding Planner as she was also the venue coordinator and knows Old Wide Awake well. She was so professional and helped us fine tune every detail to make our day so special! Margaret was FANTASTIC and we couldn’t be happy with choosing her to help us every step of the way (not to mention working with us to reschedule our original wedding plans several times due to the pandemic)!

Perfect Venue for our Event
My daughter fell in love with OWA on our first visit and we were not disappointed! We decided on the venue approximately a year before the wedding, then extended the date another 5 months (Covid). From our first meeting through the event date, Margaret was so helpful and patient. She was pleasant and timely in her responses, offering advice and recommendations along the way. On the wedding day, John went over and above to ensure we had everything we needed and he assisted our family and coordinator with anything we asked.
The venue itself is stunning. It is clean and well cared-for. It offers the rustic elegance that just makes everyone comfortable. Photography opportunities are plentiful within the beautiful rooms, the expansive porches and the lovely grounds.
We very carefully planned every detail of our event, but Mother Nature offered up the coldest, wettest day of the season. The versatility of the venue allowed us to quickly pivot and relocate the ceremony from the front steps to the porch. (I highly recommend placing a tent on rain hold regardless of the season!) We tented the travertine patio, extending 15 feet beyond the end to allow distancing between dining tables. The set-up was lovely and easily accommodated our guests (approx. 120).
The terrible weather prohibited full use of the property. We planned a cigar bar on the dock, a lounge setting near the arbor, and many other details that had to be relocated. The ample space under the house and on the porch allowed us to do this quickly and easily. I feared my daughter and son-in-law would be disappointed, but they both say they wouldn't change a thing. Despite the cold and rain, the vast majority of our guests stayed until the end of the reception. Our ceremony was at 4:30 and we all had a blast until 10 PM.
I cannot say enough to convey how pleased we are with Old Wide Awake, the staff, and our experience. The entire event exceeded our expectations and I would highly recommend this venue.

The Most Beautiful Venue!
Old Wide Awake Plantation is the most beautiful venue for your wedding! Margaret is a pleasure to work with and always quick to respond. There are so many gorgeous backdrops to choose from in terms on ceremony space and for pictures. Our wedding was everything I ever dreamed of and it largely had to do with the venue being picture perfect. We received so many compliments from our guests saying how lovely it is! Covid wedding
From the get-go, my now husband and I fell in love with Old Wide Awake Plantation. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we had to change our plans from a large 150 person wedding to a small ceremony of only 15 people. Margaret was amazing in assisting us through the transition to a smaller wedding & helped us put together a smaller vision of our original big day. Margaret was very communicative with my vendors if they ever had any questions as well. The day prior, we had a walk through with our planner; the grounds keeper was going about ensuring everything was set for the following day - the house and grounds were in great shape & made for the perfect backdrop for our ceremony & photos. The only downside was that Old Wide Awake Park itself was not open due to COVID (as it is controlled by the city & not by OWA Plantation); these were photos we were hoping to be able to get under the great oak tree, the ivy garage, & the dock by the water! I would definitely recommend OWA Plantation for any brides looking for a charming, southern wedding with a team (Margaret) who is easy to work with.

Dream Wedding during the 2020 Pandemic!
My daughter's original wedding date was in May 2020 but was postponed due to COVID. We switched to Old Wide Awake at the last minute and we are SO thankful we did! Margaret is a joy to work with - very responsive and informative which made things much easier on the mother of the bride. It was so nice to be able to arrive at the venue at 9:00 am and the "getting ready" rooms were perfect, complete with a porch for brunch and lounging before the ceremony. The venue is unique and very spacious so allowed for all COVID safeguards during the ceremony and reception. After 2 years of planning a wedding during a pandemic, I'm so thankful to have found Old Wide Awake as my daughter FINALLY had her dream wedding and happy ending! As a local, I have been to most of the venues in Charleston and I cannot praise Old Wide Awake enough!

Old Wide Awake Plantation is an absolutely incredible venue. My couple was forced to reschedule their wedding venue approximately 3 weeks prior to their wedding, and Margaret absolutely saved the day!!! She was extremely flexible and accommodating, professional, had great suggestions, and was quick to reply in our super sped up planning. One thing that I love about the space is that there are so many different layout options for ceremony, cocktail hour, and the reception. Having the large kitchen was perfect for all of us vendors to prep and hide our belongings in, and the multiple restrooms on different levels of the house were wonderful. The greenery on the steps and bottom level walls is just DREAMY. This is truly a special, unique property, and I cannot wait to be back!!

When we first saw OWA online, we fell in love, and knew that we wanted to get married there. Once we visited in person and met with Margaret, the deal was sealed. I couldn’t have had a better wedding experience anywhere else. Old Wide Awake Plantation is truly breathtaking. Every inch of the grounds is beautiful!! You will undoubtedly have the most beautiful wedding pictures to look back on. There are a few different ceremony site options and a huge patio perfect for your reception. Margaret was such a pleasure to work with. She is so sweet and incredibly knowledgeable on all things Old Wide Awake and wedding related. You Will Want to Get Married at Old Wide Awake
My daughter and her fiance were married at OWA on August 28, 2020. This was no small accomplishment, having been postponed twice due to the pandemic in addition to being a destination wedding. While we initially visited other venues, Old Wide Awake Plantation prevailed; it is a hidden gem and gets all of its glow from wedding planner, Margaret McKenzie. This is a gorgeous setting, providing all of the beauty that the South has to offer - proud old trees, lush lawns and greenery, a pond with a fountain and a stunning house that will be yours and only yours for the entire wedding day. Margaret took the time to get to know this lovely couple, gave them "homework", and subsequently provided them with a thorough selection of recommended vendors for every aspect of the wedding. She has earned the respect of her vendors and they were all familiar with everything OWA has to offer, which is particularly reassuring when planning long distance. This became more evident during the heartbreak of postponements. Margaret stayed in close communication with our family and with the vendors which gave us great peace of mind. Additional but subtle measures were put into place by the venue and our vendors for all involved during this active pandemic. The wedding day was seamless and perfect (or that's how it appeared to us)! There were no uncomfortable lulls and in spite of the hot weather, our guests stayed for the entire celebration - no one wanted to leave. The key to a successful wedding is to surround yourself with great people. At this time in history, bridal couples are faced with unprecedented challenges. Having this celebration at Old Wide Awake with Margaret McKenzie graciously but firmly leading the way provided everyone with the only emotion a wedding should - great joy. You will want to get married at Old Wide Awake Plantation. Ask for Margaret and give her our best.

Beautiful venue!
The venue was absolutely beautiful and Margaret was incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. I also really enjoyed that we had the house for the whole day so I could relax before I had to get ready.

March 2020 Wedding
March 21, 2020 was the most beautiful and intimate moment of Kevin and my life. After our engagement in April of 2019, we set out to find the most perfect, southern venue. We both grew up in the little town of Dillon, SC right on the North Carolina border, but we have called Charleston home for 10 years and wanted to be wed here. After looking high and low, I stumbled upon Old Wide Awake on Pinterest of all places. I called right away, scared we would miss a spring Saturday as the weekends were quickly booking. We didn’t necessarily care what the date of the wedding would be, just that it was on a Saturday in the cooler months. We almost picked March 28, 2020, my grandmother’s birthday but our photographer was already booked that day…this will be important later. So, we settled with March 21, 2020…God always knows best! As if the venue isn’t perfect enough with its old southern charm, its natural vegetation, grand oaks lining the driveway with Spanish moss, perfectly manicured lawn and fresh seasonal flowers, Margaret McKenzie was the most magical part of OWA. Margaret McKenzie is the event planner at OWA, however, for an additional charge she will step in as wedding planner…DO IT!!! She is worth every single penny! From the start she was very organized and met with us concerning our vision and we started from there. She made a list of approved vendors who met our price range and our taste, and we made the contact with each vendor. She stepped in when our caterer stopped responding to our emails and texts and the situation was fixed and the caterer was then on his best behavior. She met us at our rental company to pick out linens and made sure we had the correct seating, tables and chairs for our ceremony and reception. She coordinated everything. She spoke with my vendors to make sure everyone was on track and were where they needed to be. She sent them all a timeline the week of the wedding and asked that no one contact the bride or groom the week of the wedding. Well of course we had a few to do so and she fixed the problem. She stepped in the day of our wedding when our portable commode trailer did not show and had them upgrade us at no additional cost. Most importantly…our rehearsal dinner location cancelled on us two days before our rehearsal dinner. Before my fiancé could even tell me, she had called our rental company to have it arranged for our tent, chairs, linens and tables to be delivered to the venue the day before our wedding. She notified our rehearsal caterer and said the venue had been changed and they would give us a cost cut on our meals as they had cancelled their venue the last minute. She had everything set up so that we could have our rehearsal dinner at OWA. When I tell you, she is worth every penny, I mean it! I loved getting to know her on a personal level. She was hands down the best money spent on our wedding and we are forever grateful to her. Back to the importance of our wedding date. Had we waited until March 28, 2020 to be married we would have had to postpone. The COVID-19 pandemic shut all venues down the week after we were wed. When I tell you God is good!!! Book the venue and book the planner…you will not regret it!

Our dream was to have an all outdoor Charleston wedding. We searched through almost all the city had to offer and landed on Old Wide Awake - no question! This venue offers a truly stunning atmosphere. Once you visit this property in person, you'll be 100% confident in holding your special day here. The best part... Margret McKenzie! She is WONDERFUL to work with and knows the property better than anyone. I planned the wedding from Nashville, TN and had all of the help + guidance in the world from her. It is absolutely no coincidence that this place wins an award year after year. I 100% recommend booking this gorgeous venue!!!

September wedding 2019
My husband and i got married on September 22,2019! We had our families traveling from up north and we really wanted to create a southern wedding. This venue blew our expectations away! Everything about this place is simply beautiful. Having the whole venue to ourself for the whole day allowed us to take our time with getting ready and dance into the night. We could not be more happy that we went with this venue and Margaret McKenzie who assisted with planning our wedding! Highly recommend this venue if you’re looking for a private, southern charming wedding

Better than I could have imagined!
Six years ago now my parents bought a house in the development next to Old Wide Awake and whenever I was at their house I would run through the park, down the road past the plantation, and through the woods next to the venue. Being a pretty non traditional girl I was surprised when I found myself thinking, “If I ever get married I’m going to do it right here”. And so when my fiancé proposed on my parents dock within site of Wide Awake Park I knew this was meant to be. We booked the venue with Margaret McKenzie the very next day and never looked back.
Old Wide Awake and Wide Awake Park are beautiful all by themselves but wow did everything really become gorgeous with the efforts of all of my vendors coordinated by Margaret McKenzie and her beautiful daughter Meredith McKenzie who came just to help her mom with my day!!!
Margaret gracefully dealt with an out of town bride with some nonconventional opinions complete with spreadsheets, PowerPoints, and a million “visions”. And wouldn’t you know that my “vision” truly came to life at the park and the plantation! Margaret was able to coordinated a pretty complicated boat entrance complete with music from 3 different sources during the ceremony as well as a bridal party who wasn’t even able to rehearse in the real time setting. I continue to get compliments on my wedding every day and when I look at the pictures I can’t even believe it really was my wedding at all!
Thank you so much to Allison Littlefield (for also stepping in last minute and dealing with my antics), Kacie Fauling at Lashes & Lace who made me feel and look beautiful on my day and the week leading up to it, Hambys catering for incredible food and dealing with our 180 dozen homemade cookies (not an exaggeration), Squeeze bar for having such amazing service that there was never a line or empty glass, EventHaus for the incredible linens and rentals, Ooh Events for all of the amazing furniture and ceremony chandelier, Michael Peters for the most personal ceremony, Lauren Myers for not only sharing her wedding spot with us but capturing such beautiful photos, Phil Constantine at BunnDJ for keeping the party going so well that total strangers felt like friends (he truly knew us better than we know ourselves), Southern Smoke for an amazing guest experience and hospitality that really completed the whole vintage classic vibe, Wide Awake park for such a beautiful ceremony spot that they continue to improve, and Old Wide Awake plantation for dreams truly come true.
A very special thank you to Wildflowers Inc for the most incredible flowers and draping that they literally worked on for days leading up to our wedding.
And the most special gratitude to the McKenzie family who treated us like their own family in everything they did. Rob McKenzie went completely out of his way to do things he’s never done before literally the week of the wedding. Meredith McKenzie who drove from a different state to help her mom nail literally everything I threw at them in my 20 page PowerPoint.
The warmest gratitude possible to Margaret McKenzie whom always made me feel supported and wouldn’t stop until things were perfect. She made me feel so comfortable that I just found out I was pregnant for the whole month leading up to the wedding and I never felt the slightest bit exhausted!!! I always felt like Margaret put me first and defended me even when I probably was wrong and I’ll never forget that.

Old Wide Awake Plantation was truly a DREAM venue for us! We had an outdoor wedding in the month of May and everything could not have been more perfect. From the ceremony on the river under the grand oak, to the reception under the stars up at the beautiful white house, this venue is the definition of southern charm. The venue manager and staff are very professional and made everything seamless and perfect. Thank you Old Wide Awake for the best day of our lives!

The most gorgeous venue for an even better price!
We had the most amazing experience at Old Wide Awake for our wedding on 4/27/19. Margaret was very responsive and made sure we had the best day. There are so many different areas at the venue that you can use which gave our day the perfect flow. From the arbor by the pond, to the bridal suite you have access to all day, to the little dock area, the fire pit for the boys to have cigar hour at, to the gorgeous patio for the band and the staircase on which everyone took pictures, there is so much Old Wide Awake has to offer! We fell in love with the venue the moment we saw it in person and our day could not have been more perfect there.

PERFECT Southern Charm Plantation Venue!!
We decided to go with Old Wide Awake Plantation for our wedding venue because it had everything we were looking for for our charming low-country wedding! The house is absolutely beautiful and dripping with southern charm with its wrap-around porches, green vines and palm trees, and 200 year old history. The house was so great for all of the wedding party and family to get ready at in the morning, and it has antique but cozy furniture so you feel instantly at home. They do a great job with upkeep as they continually re-paint it, landscape it, spray for bugs, and are always trying to add cute new additions (new pretty iron gate, new pergola, etc.) The huge covered front porch as well as the covered downstairs bar area is great if you want a cocktail hour but are anxiety-ridden about the weather like me, because if it rains you don't have to rent a tent for cocktail hour- your guests will be covered and they get to explore the historic home! We had a tented reception on the travertine stone in between the house and the pond and it was beautiful. It was so great to have everything close together but with gorgeous views of the pond and house, and again not having to worry about the weather (muddy/soggy grass for guests to step in like at other venues) because of the wonderful travertine floor and brick paving everywhere. Our guests would not stop talking about how cool the place was and how they wanted to get married here! We also used the campfire pit and dock on the other side of the pond for a little cigar bar area for the men- which all the guys loved! This venue has so many great areas to decorate and utilize for your wedding, you can really make your wedding unique and your guests will love exploring all around the house. We got married down at Wide Awake Park because we really wanted to get married under the giant oak tree dripping in Spanish moss with beautiful water views. Definitely check out the Wide Awake Park down the road- you need to rent the space separate from this venue but it will sell you on getting married here! We also liked the fact that this venue is 30 minutes outside of downtown Charleston- we just got shuttles for our guests and we never had to worry about loud city noises interrupting our ceremony or random strangers watching or crashing our wedding. It's so private and secluded that it felt like a beautiful backyard wedding. We had Margaret McKenzie, who works for Old Wide Awake, be our wedding planner and she was AMAZING!!! I could not rave about her and her assistant Kira enough, they always answered any questions I had, endured a million phone calls and meetings with me so I could perfect everything, helped me with all of the vendors, and made our wedding day run so smoothly that I was so relaxed all day because we were ahead of schedule the whole time (usually unheard of for weddings!). Margaret is like family to us now! Our wedding was absolutely perfect, I would pick Old Wide Awake Plantation a million times over!

Perfect/Dream Wedding for My Daughter
My daughter had her wedding at Old Wide Awake Plantation last weekend and it was amazing! We first toured Old Wide Awake Plantation over a year ago when we were venue shopping in Charleston. We saw almost all of the typical venues, but both my daughter and I fell in love with Old Wide Awake Plantation. We loved the beauty of the house and property, the big wrap-around porches, the beautiful flagstone patio, the pond and fountain. We also loved that we had the place to ourselves the entire wedding day (unlike some other Charleston venues that you share with other brides or the public on tours). We also were SO happy with Margaret McKenzie as our wedding planner. Margaret knows everything about Old Wide Awake and truly knows what is best for weddings there. I cannot even tell you how many hours Margaret spent providing us with vendor recommendations, giving us advice, answering questions via phone, email and text, coming with us to meetings with the florist, rental companies, linens, and more. She gave us the best advice, helped us so very much, and was kind, warm, efficient, and professional throughout everything. If an issue did pop up, Margaret was on top of it immediately and helped us to resolve it. She also saved us a considerable amount of money by getting us discounts with vendors. She was always available and always made my daughter feel like she was the only bride who needed her time and attention (although I’m sure she was always very busy). On the day before and the day of the wedding, Margaret made everything run so smoothly. The wedding we had there was an absolute dream. My daughter spent the morning getting ready in the bridal suite, chatting with her bridesmaids and I, eating breakfast and drinking mimosas while Margaret, her staff, and our vendors took care of absolutely everything. It was private, relaxing, and very special. We had the ceremony down at Old Wide Awake Park which was breathtakingly beautiful. We had cocktail hour on the beautiful wrap-around porch at the house and the reception in a beautiful tent on the flagstone patio beside the pond. Our guests said it was like something out of a fairy tale and that is was the best wedding they had ever been to – it far exceeded everyone’s expectations! We had room to spread out and had a cigar bar and fire pit going over by the little dock with rocking chairs at the far side of the pond that many guests really enjoyed. We had room for lawn games and a photo booth. We had lounge furniture underneath the porch by the fun bar area and also in the reception tent. We had just a beautiful time and almost every guest stayed until the sparkler exit. I highly recommend Old Wide Awake Plantation and would not do anything different if we had to pick a venue and planner all over again. If you are lucky enough to have your wedding there and Margaret as your planner, you will not regret it! I cannot thank Margaret and Old Wide Awake Plantation enough for being my daughter's dream wedding come true.

I toured a total of six wedding venues in the Charleston, SC, venue and once my groom and I saw Old Wide Awake we knew it was the place for us. We wanted something that was beautiful and would be a perfect backdrop for our day. We also wanted something very private and where no one else, besides who we invited, could be there and this venue gave us that. We hired Margaret McKenzie as our wedding planner and she was absolutely perfect. Highly recommend this venue!

This is a beautiful place to have a wedding. My daughter's November wedding was magical. The house made a romantic backdrop to a late afternoon wedding and an outdoor reception. Perfect venue
I cannot say enough about Old Wide Awake Plantation and the staff there. Margaret is a dream to work with. I even came by on an off day, and one of the gentlemen working on the grounds (John, I believe?) stopped what he was doing and allowed me to show my MOHs the inside of the house. Margaret was very responsive to all emails and made sure we were fully equipped with any info we needed to make sure our big day was perfect. The venue is absolutely gorgeous and very accommodating.

After and exhaustive search, we found Old Wide Awake and instantly knew it had to be the reception venue for our wedding. It was so charming and beautiful, but it also had some of the amenities we were looking for - including air conditioning inside, plenty of time to spend the day there getting ready, sufficient bathrooms for our guests, etc. Margaret McKenzie is the best in the business. She was professional and friendly, and put us at ease throughout the entire process. Old Wide Awake was the perfect venue for us, and it will always hold a special place in our hearts.

We absolutely LOVED our venue! So many options on how to set things up, plenty of parking and great for photos. Our guests we’re asking me all night how we found this gem and how they could book it for their wedding! We are from out of town but the drive is soo worth it! We visited 10 other venues before discovering Old Wide Awake, which is in a class all of it's own. This venue, unlike any others we looked into, provided an entire experience. Beginning the day in the beautifully decorated historic home and spending the afternoon out on the lush grounds before the festivities began was the most perfect way to spend our moments before marriage. Much like our decision to go with Old Wide Awake, deciding to hire Margaret McKenzie as our planner was without a doubt one of the best wedding decisions we made. She poured her heart and soul into helping us plan the most phenomenal night. Margaret provided us with a list of recommended vendors (who were absolutely fabulous) and accompanied us on vendor visits (including a few last minute meets!) to offer guidance. She was a crucial support system for me when I was lost with the planning process or flustered with which way to go on a decision. Margaret’s professionalism and eye for beauty and detail ensured that our entire event (day and night) ran smoothly. Everything felt so natural, seamless and perfect. Her exceptional service is unmatched and her fair pricing fit well with our fixed budget. I'm disappointed that we won't be having another party of this scale as I would love nothing more than to be back at OWA and working with Margaret again. I'm truly envious of brides that are still in the midst of planning their Old Wide Awake wedding with her!

I just can't say enough about Old Wide Awake Plantation. Margaret McKenzie and her assistant, Kira, elevated our wedding as a "Welcome to Charleston" experience for our whole family!!! We were married there on October 28, 2017.
My husband noticed OWA mentioned in a Reese Witherspoon article years ago! We joked about getting married there. Except, I could never stop looking up pictures and dreaming of getting married there!!
When we visited, we both immediately knew it was everything we'd imagined.
My only concern from the beginning was that the location is a bit far out from proper Charleston. That was easily solved with booking a guest bus from the hotels, making the party safer for everyone anyway.
Plus, it's more fun to have a private location to yourself, and not have to share the property with other weddings.
My bridesmaids, mothers, sisters, etc. all spent the morning and afternoon with me getting ready at OWA, having lunch and drinking coffee and mimosas. It was exactly what I pictured.

My daughter always had a clear vision of her wedding day. On March 25, 2017, Old Wide Awake Plantation brought her vision to life! It is truly a Southern Wedding Venue!! The grounds are immaculate, and the plantation house is beautiful. It's all yours for the day....every inch of the space! Our photos were gorgeous, and the house accommodated our entire bridal party (and we had 10 bridesmaids and 10 groomsmen). There are several different location options on the property for your ceremony. We chose the steps of the house, and it was stunning! Im still receiving texts and emails from friends and family, complimenting our beautiful wedding! The icing on the cake is Old Wide Awake's Wedding Coordinator, Margaret McKenzie. Margaret is everything you could want in a wedding planner and MORE! There's nothing she doesn't know about the property, and she'll help you achieve the exact look and feel you desire for your wedding day. She's extremely professional, knowledgeable, and most importantly, kind and supportive from start to finish. Her taste is exquisite, and her vendor recommendations are the best of the best. Our wedding included nearly 300 guest, and Margaret stayed cool and calm, never missing a beat. She's a gem for sure!!

We booked Old Wide Awake Plantation for a destination wedding 18 months in advance of the wedding date of 5/6/17 without visiting it. The great reviews we relied on we're totally spot on! The property is gorgeous and private. The house has undergone renovations and is beautiful and a comfortable place to get ready. One of the best features is that you have the entire property to yourself and you have it all day. Some of the other plantation venues we looked at were lovely but had kind of a wedding factory feel to them. One of the best decisions we made was to hire Margaret McKenzie as our wedding planner. She knows every inch of this property and had wonderful design recommendations. Her preferred list of vendors was invaluable and we were very happy with everyone we hired to provide services. I miss talking to Margaret. She is so warm and personable. As the mother of the bride, I felt guilty relaxing with my daughter and her bridesmaids, but every time I took a peek, everything was progressing smoothly and in a timely manner. I can't believe how little stress I felt that day! Our friends from Charleston were stunned that they had never heard of OWAP- it's one of Charlestons best kept wedding venue secrets! We got married at Old Wide Awake on 4/15/17 and it was everything we have ever dreamed of - it was PERFECT!
We also rented out Old Wide Awake Park and had both the ceremony and the cocktail hour there. The beautiful tree covered in Spanish Moss was the perfect ceremony location, as it was a little cooler by the water - and then the guests were shaded from the tree as well. They watched dolphins and boats go by as they waited for the ceremony to begin.
Margaret is a MUST if you do get married at Old Wide Awake Plantation -- she will ensure every detail is perfect before the wedding even begins, and then ensure it is all executed day of. She is a professional, and truly an expert at both Old Wide Awake Park and Old Wide Awake Plantation!

I could not have been happier with this venue. To start, it is absolutely gorgeous. At my first visit, my breath was literally taken away as I turned down the driveways. I got that same feeling each time I visited, which just felt so special to me. Next, the flexibility that the venue offered was huge. I didn't realize how much I appreciated not having to choose specific vendors until after already booking the venue, but I'm so happy that that was the case at Old Wide Awake. I was able to customize the wedding of my dreams. Margaret and the house staff were all great and very easy and nice to work with. I honestly cannot say enough great things about this venue. A definite must see!

My husband and I were SO happy that we got married at Old Wide Awake. The setting is absolutely gorgeous and our guests couldn't stop raving about what a beautiful place it was to get married. One huge perk is you get the venue all day--from 9am to 10pm, so there won't be any other weddings on the same day or short windows within to set up or get ready. The bride, groom, bridesmaids, and groomsmen can all get ready on-site in different parts of the house, which made things really easy. One of the best parts of Old Wide Awake is you can hire on Margaret McKenzie as your wedding planner. She was a lifesaver!!! We hired her on to help us choose vendors she had worked with who would do great work, to answer questions and offer advice throughout the planning process as she knows the venue inside and out like nobody else, and to be our day of coordinator. As a result, all of our vendors were reliable and did amazing work, there were no major issues leading up to or on the day of the wedding (except for Hurricane Matthew destroying our rehearsal dinner venue, but Margaret helped us find a new spot right away), and the day of the wedding was blissfully stress-free. I was a local bride and couldn't have pulled off such an amazing wedding without her, so if you're out of town, she will be invaluable for your wedding!

What a wonderful, wonderful wedding we had for my daughter and her husband last Saturday at Old Wide Awake Plantation. OWA is a quintessential plantation that has been lovingly restored. The wrap around porches and travertine patio, the ivy draped staircase and sweet pond, the tree framed driveway and pub like bar…all add up to a very special wedding location. But the real magic starts when you add the amazing talents and kindness of Margaret McKenzie. From the moment we started the wedding process…almost 13 months prior…until the day after our wedding, Margaret made everything click. She was there through the planning process with the caterer, florist, band, rentals, photographer and transportation. She helped in the design process, making suggestions that enhanced our vision. The week before my daughter’s wedding she distributed a timeline and set up schedule to all of our vendors. When the bride, bridesmaids, MOB and MOG arrived Saturday morning she greeted us with confidence and warmth. As the MOB, I didn’t lift a finger on wedding day. Margaret took care of everything. She was our "most valuable player”. I would highly encourage anyone to engage Margaret’s services when booking the OWA. Honestly, looking back I wouldn’t change a moment. We used Old Wide Awake as our reception venue for our June wedding. We chose Old Wide Awake, not only because it is beautiful, but because it was more laid back and "off the beaten" path than many of the plantation-style venues that we considered. It was one of the best decisions we made during the wedding planning process. The first time we visited, we loved the history and beauty of the house and the versatility of the property. During that visit, we also met Margaret, who sealed the deal. She put us at ease about the wedding planning process, and promised that she would help us create the wedding of our dreams, which she did. She served as our wedding planner throughout the year-and-a-half planning process, and guided us every step of the way. When our wedding day finally arrived, Margaret coordinated the entire event so that every decoration was in place and every transition was seamless. Old Wide Awake served as the most beautiful backdrop for our reception, with its palatial wrap around porches and beautiful landscaping. The patio served as the perfect base for our tented dining and dance floor area - almost creating an outdoor ballroom effect. Ultimately, we loved everything about Old Wide Awake and Margaret McKenzie! If you choose this venue and planner, you won't regret it!

I am writing this review only a couple weeks after getting married at Old Wide Awake Plantation and I am still in awe of how amazing everything was! I had my ceremony out on the lawn by the pond and the reception was at the house. We had a big tent over the patio where the band played and guests danced until the very last song! I currently live out of state, so planning my wedding at Old Wide Awake would have been 1000x more difficult if it were not for the wonderful Margaret McKenzie. She is the coordinator of the plantation and she was a miracle worker. She helped me tremendously and was simply amazing. I can't say enough good things about her, and also she knows the plantation so well because of how many weddings she has done out there! We had our cocktail hour on the porch and underneath where the covered bar area is. Since it was a sunny day on Labor Day weekend, it was pretty hot but my guests did not seem to care at all! They kept coming up to me and telling me how beautiful the location and house were. Underneath the porch and the big tent helped keep things cool.
Another bonus if you have your reception here is the Old Wide Awake Park just a little ways down the road. This little park has BEAUTIFUL trees and a dock that over looks the water. It is also an option to have your ceremony out there, but that costs extra. Definitely take pictures out there though if you can!
After having my wedding out at OWA I would do it all over again! The house and setting are beautiful! You can't beat those lovely porches or the beautiful pond with the fountain! I highly recommend this venue!

My husband and I were married at Old Wide Awake on April 8, 2016. It was the first venue we viewed and when we saw it in person I KNEW this was where I wanted to get married. First of all, it was the first place we viewed because Margaret McKenzie is phenomenal at correspondence. This was one of the many venues that we had contacted and she immediately replied back to us with answers to all of our questions. After viewing this property we looked at a few other places (my husband wanted to keep our options open) but nothing came close to this beautiful property.
The house has all of the southern charm you would expect to see here in Charleston. My favorite aspect were the porches. The upstairs porch provided a perfect gathering place for the women in my life who were helping me get ready on the big day. It somehow turned into quite the pre-wedding party!
My second favorite part of the house is the bar underneath the front porch. It's a perfect spot to hang out with friends and mingle when you're not on the dancefloor.
Other great features are: PLENTY of parking, privacy, a cute pond with a fountain, big kitchen, permanent travertine patio so there's no need to rent one, full use of the house (some plantations here in Charleston don't allow guests to come in the house which, for me, would defeat the entire purpose!).
Margaret McKenzie always answered the phone on the first try or immediately called me back anytime I needed to get in contact with her. She is amazingly professional and so pleasant to work with.
I'm so glad I picked this house for my wedding day. It was absolutely perfect!

My husband and I live in Charlotte, but since we got engaged in Charleston, we decided it would be a great idea to get married in this wonderful city. We looked at several different venues, but Old Wide Awake Plantation was hands down the best place for us. It's a beautiful plantation house with all of the southern charm you could ask for. It's also one of the only places that allows you to have outside catering and bar services as well as the entire venue for the day. Margaret is amazing and was a huge help making sure everything ran smoothly. I highly recommend you hire her as your coordinator since she knows the house inside and out and will help you select your vendors. She also makes you feel like you are the most important person in the world on one of the the one of the most important and special days of your life. I can't say enough great things about how perfect our wedding was and we want to thank Old Wide Awake Plantation and Margaret for everything!

My husband and I did a lot of "online shopping" for venues, but Old Wide Awake Plantation was the first one we visited in person, and we immediately fell in love! And not only did we fall in love with the house, we also fell in love with Margaret! I knew instantly that she'd be a dream to work with, and I was right. Not having my mom or sister in town to help, Margaret was so good to me...keeping me organized, offering great suggestions and always finding creative ways to work with our budget. I truly felt like I was working with a friend I'd known for ages.
We had our ceremony under the big oak tree on the water (just down the street), but we couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting for our reception than Old Wide Awake. It has that Southern plantation appeal and is full of green space with so many fabulous locations for photos. One of my favorite perks of the house is having it to ourselves ALL DAY to get ready, drink champagne and take photos. It made for the most fun and relaxing day! Thank you Margaret and Old Wide Awake for making our day so special –one we will never ever forget!

Old Wide Awake Plantation and wedding coordinator Margaret McKenzie were fabulous. Our daughters wedding here was a true destination wedding in every since of the word. We live in California, our daughter and her then fiance live in Kalamazoo, Mi. Distance was a major concern for me. Margaret and her recamendations were all spot on. She suggested Babs, Candescentoccasions for florist and decor. Since we are all thousands of miles away we were relying on them and their expertise. Margaret also gave suggestions and coordinated other rentals that we needed. Importantly, they all listened to every concern we had and we couldn't have done any better had we lived nearby. Everything we wanted was the way it was done. It was perfection to the tee! We strongly suggest using this beautiful venue and Margaret along with anything she suggests for your event. This special day was far above our expectations to say the least. The house and the property are beautiful, accomodating and pristine.

Old Wide Awake was an AMAZING venue. We LOVED being able to call this beautiful place our home for the day. We enjoyed hanging out at the house all morning getting ready and taking photos, had our ceremony across the pond, reception in front of the house, and even took some extra (amazing) photos at the park down the street. They were flexible with our vendors, which we loved, and the whole atmosphere was perfect for our wedding. This is a hidden gem no one knows about! When they hear wide awake- they think wide awake plantation. This is right passed the plantation house on the water! She was extremely responsive and professional throughout the entire planning process and always so sweet and complimentary. Honestly this venue has it all, gorgeous grounds, beautiful dance floor, and a double wrap around porch that provide views of all the festivities. We had our ceremony on the property as well as reception which was wonderful. The entire wedding had a wonderful flow from getting ready, to ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. The historic plantation home has an authentic elegance and charm, but also an approachable, familiar appeal that allows you to feel as if you are hosting your wedding at a family member's private estate. We loved every minute of it and we are so grateful for how truly magical our experience was hosting our wedding here. Many thanks to Margaret and her staff! This wedding venue is amazing. The house is beautiful, truly breathtaking. Our wedding felt so intimate and special. Having the grounds to ourselves the entire day was such a gift. We researched for a while before choosing Old Wide Awake, but it was perfect for our 40 guests. Our wedding party/guests were so impressed, and complimented the unique experience they had. Our wedding day was more than we could've ever dreamed of!

I can't say enough wonderful things about Old Wide Awake Plantation! It was the absolute perfect wedding venue. The house has been beautifully restored and the grounds are wonderful. We looked at many, many venues in Charleston & as soon as we arrived here, we had that WOW moment and knew it was the one. It was so nice to have the house for the entire day. We had so much fun getting ready in the bridal suite & it was nice to use the formal dining room for our cake cutting.
We wouldn't of had the perfect day if it wasn't for Margaret - she is exceptional. She made sure every little detail was perfect & we didn't have to worry about a thing. I will cherish the plantation & Margaret for the rest of my life. We truly had a perfect, fairytale like wedding!
