We loved our cake from Carmela! We had fallen in love with one cake that was done with fondant, but Carmela is exclusively buttercream. Fortunately we picked a relatively simple design to work with, so she was able to emulate the image we liked, but make ours taste even better! (Fondant cakes can look pretty...but you're definitely sacrificing the taste.) My ONLY quasi-negative remark (and I'm still giving a 5-star because this could be my venue's fault for cutting too small) was that I think we had too much cake. We went home with the top TWO layers of our cake!

Our cake from Macri's was, hands-down, the most delicious cake I've ever tasted. Five years after my wedding, people still comment on how good the cake was. The bakery was wonderful in working with us to incorporate family tartan ribbon. Working with Macri's was such a great experience that we decided to have a cake made there again for our son's baptism at the Basilica. Once again, the service and cake were spectacular. Delicious and beautiful, with tons of compliments. I wish I lived closer so that I could get Macri's cakes for every occasion!!!

Carmela Macri of Macri's Bakery beautifully created a gorgeous wedding cake, unique Notre Dame themed groom's cake, and a delicious variety of pastries for my son's wedding. Everything was fresh, and tasted as wonderful, as it looked! It was a pleasure working with Carmela. She was very patient, understanding, and kind and gave us excellent suggestions. The groom's cake was a delightful surprise for my son, who is a Notre Dame grad and a lifelong fan, and for the many ND alumni and fans who attended the wedding. Many photos were taken of that very special groom's cake!

Our wedding cake was both gorgeous and delicious! Carmella was a delight to work with. Macri's cakes are worth every penny because guests find them to be so scrumptious they want seconds and because the cakes are pieces of art in themselves!

Not only was our cake beautiful and exactly what we wanted, it was the best cake we have ever tasted! Our guests raved about how good our cake was, and from now on we only buy cakes from Macri's! We had a large cake - 6 tier for over 400 guests and our expereience was wonderful and exactly what we hoped for! I would recommend anyone in the area to use this bakery - not only do you get what you want, but the staff are very nice and easy to work with. We shopped around and found some places could be very rude and not someone we wanted to be a part of our special day.
Go with Macri's and you won't be sorry!

The cake was absolutly delicious! We had our main cake as white with the buttercream filling, then we had sheet cakes in the kitchen we went with a sheet of white with raspberry filling, a sheet of white with strawberry filling, and a sheet of chocolate with buttercream filling. Everyone is still talking about how great our cake was and how they have never tasted cake that good!
The only downfall I had was since we had booked them so early (at least 6 months before the wedding) I hadn't talked to them since then, and it was down to less than a week till the wedding and no one had tried to contact me yet so I called them and talked about how I hadn't finalized my final decisions on the cake. It made me a little worried being so soon, but Carmela called me early that week and finished going over everything with me.
Everything ended up turning out WAY better than I even expected!

Macri's did a wonderful job baking our wedding cake. We wanted to incorporate a variety of designs we'd seen in various wedding cake magazines, and they were great about pulling together all the designs to personalize our own cake. They were happy to let us use our own wedding topper, and they delivered the cake to the reception site, which made the process very simple for us.

We thought our cake tasted absolutely fantastic, and our guests agreed. I think oftentimes the cake doesn't get much attention for its actual taste, but this cake did. The buttercream frosting--one of the points which they boast--is very light and not at all overwhelming like many other frostings we tasted at other bakeries. The cake itself (we had chocolate and yellow cake) was very moist, had a smooth texture and had a very rich flavor.

We were quite impressed overall and would highly recommend this bakery to anyone else getting married in the South Bend area.

My sister-in-law decorates cakes as a hobby and we really wanted to have her decorate ours. However, it was going to be a lot of work for her just being in the wedding, not to mention decorating the cake. Our solution was to buy a cake without any decoration, at a reduced price. We shopped around and most vendors charged the same price decorated or not. Macri's worked with us and was very flexible. They even let us buy frosting for her to work with before the big day so she could be prepared for its texture and consistency. Besides that, there cake is utterly delicious. There was not a single piece left 15mins after cutting.

Overall, I had a very positive experience with Macri's. Their cakes are beautiful and the flavors are heavenly. They also have a lot of different options and the ability to customize your cake, but the customization comes at a pretty hefty price. We had a 3 tiered cake (not including the topper) with 3 different flavors. We put spacers between each layer to make the cake appear larger and filled the space with our wedding flowers (fuschia orchids). The cake really popped, especially under the chandelier in the Palais Royale - our reception hall, and was just a delicious as it was beautiful. It was an expensive centerpiece though, so I would recommend a smaller cake and some sheet cakes to get the flavors you want with less cost.

    Recommended flavors:
    - Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese filling (costs extra, but so delicious!)
    - Chocolate Cake with Buttercream filling (tastes like a tradition hostess cake - so yummy!)
    - Lemon Cake with Buttercream filling (might sound strange, but it has such a delicious, light, and fresh taste)

    Wasn't super impressed with:
    - White Cake or any of the fruit fillings (the fillings seemed like gelatin and no flavor - would be better off using fresh strawberries and making it like a strawberry shortcake)
    - Red Velvet with Cream Cheese filling (the cream cheese is delightful and would make this flavor, because on it's own it's not that amazing)

I did have some trouble with getting an accurate quote and response from the cake-maker. I met with her the first time and talked about what we wanted and she gave me a quote. However, after that initial meeting, she never seemed to be available when I called. I finally talked to someone else and they didn't have any record of my cake, had to write me out a new quote, and it was totally different than the first (much more!). When I finally sat down with her and was able to get everything down on paper, she charged for every little thing (each pillar, different fillings, different cakes, etc.)

Let me just start by saying that this was a very delicious cake. We had the Italian torte cake on the main tier, along with a chocolate/raspberry cake on the second tier. It was the best cake we tasted in the area and guests were excited about it.

That's where my satisfaction ends with this vendor though. First of all, they are disorganized to a fault. The person who is in charge of the cakes and that you need to meet with is Carmella. Sometimes, another person will try and work with you, but then they stop and say that Carmella will need to do it all again with you. This was a waste of time and it became super difficult to get a hold of her. She is nice but I didn't end up trusting her. I had to meet with her three times because after the first time, we got stood up. The second time we met with her, she didn't have the cake samples I requested over the phone for us and claimed that we hadn't called in. The third time I met with her and put in my order, she lost my notes and claimed that I never met with her to put in an order. We found this out about a month and a half before the wedding when we called in to confirm and put down a payment and it was very nerve-racking. As I flew in from outside the area to run my wedding vendor errands...I knew we met or attempted to meet all these times.

The day we had to pick up our stuff...they claimed they had never gotten our payment. I sent my check by courier and I tracked it as delivered. This was embarrassing as the family member that picked up the stuff had to use her credit card to pay for the bill. I was able to stop the check, but that was ridiculous.

Secondly, they do not have a printed cake pricing and options listing that is readily accessible unless they show you yours at the bakery. They do not give you a document listing what you ordered and never gave me a receipt. Ever. So when they "lost" my order and I had to call it back in, I received different prices. I had my own notes about what we ordered previously, and when I called to reduce the amount of cake we would need than what we estimated, she gave us the same price, and said that the prices were always the same and we must have written them down wrong. Because I did not have a price list, I could never cross-check this with her, and since it was a month before the wedding at that point, I just caved and agreed. Then, over the phone, right after I gave her my credit card number, she adds a fee for the cake deposit that we had already paid. Because *she* had no record of this...we had to pay it again. I had my lovely planner Cher make sure the parts they requested back after the wedding were returned so we could get our money back. They also added in "oh, that's extra" fees whenever we asked about certain designs, such as buttercream swirls she felt were difficult to create that every other bakery in the area never charged extra for. So, the cake did not end up being the affordable and yummy cake we were excited about. It became the expensive cake we were trying to avoid.

Third, they are not flexible. We had a simple cake, no decorations save for a simple beading at the bottom of the tiers. It was a p.o.t.a to get her to confirm that she wasn't going to do her swirls on the cake. Each call, I confirmed because I was nervous she would do it given the interactions we kept having. Each time, she kept pushing her "signature swirls" on me, saying that they were trendy, that the cake wouldn't look good without them, that everyone wanted them and she didn't understand why I wanted such a plain cake. In the end, we got our plain, happy cake. Phew. Also, if you want anything different that is not a stripped down cake like ours, be prepared for extra $30 fees for each element (again, that are not printed ANYWHERE). When I met with her to discuss designs and pictures, I just gave up and decided on the plain cake to avoid any additional post-hoc fees.

Overall, it was a delicious cake. Everyone loved it. We are super excited to eat our main tier soon (we can't wait to let it freeze!). But anything beyond that...terrible experience dealing with this vendor.
