My dress ended up requiring a lot of work to fit my body, but due to Joann's clever problem solving and immense skill, my dress looked phenomenal on my wedding day. Joann was described to me as the fairy godmother of alternations by the bridal shop that I purchased my wedding dress. Needless to say, I promptly connected with Joann to schedule an appointment for my alterations.
Joann was truly a pleasure to work with. One of the things that sticks out to me about working with Joann is her sincere desire to ensure that my wedding dress was perfect. I was extremely pleased with the results at my final fitting. The hem was difficult but she nailed it! My photographer even mentioned how well my bustle was done.

I can’t speak highly enough about Joann. She was recommended to me after purchasing my wedding dress at Vowd. Her professionalism, kindness, and talent exceeded my expectations as a client of hers! The best seamstress!
Joann was very patient and has decades of experience to alter your dress. I highly suggest her for alterations. She gives great guidance (i wanted to cut off my train, she did a french bustle, which I am so glad I listened to her).
She is skillful and careful with her craft and she will not let you walk away until both you and her feel the dress is perfect.

Mother's Wedding Dress Redesign
I will forever be extremely grateful for Ms. Joann because she made my wedding dress one of the most perfect and special parts of my entire wedding! Joann was able to take my mother's retro wedding dress from 1990, complete with enormous sleeves, tassels, and bows, and made it into a beautiful, modern silhouette! She is so talented and knowledgeable about wedding gowns and I truly don't think I could've taken my dress to anyone else and made it look as good as it did! She took the dress apart completely and was able to design a whole new dress from the fabric! We kept the original skirt and train, but dropped the waistline using the extra fabric from the original huge sleeves, for a more A-line silhouette. She completely redesigned the back of the dress using only the original lace and mesh. She was able to troubleshoot issues with the skirt laying correctly and made an easy-to-figure-out bustle that was perfect for the design! I looked forward to every alterations appointment I had with sweet Joann and I'm so grateful for her amazing work on my gown.

I was slightly high-maintenance in that my dress needed lots of alterations AND I had purchased yards of tulle to have a skirt custom-made to wear over my dress for the ceremony and take off for the reception. JoAnn was a magician - the dress and the skirt were more than I could ever have dreamed of! She is so kind, makes you feel so at home, and really understands how to make your dress perfect for you!

Ahhhh-mazing!
I put Ms.Joann through the ringer with my wedding dress. Unfortunately my dress arrived almost 3 weeks late and Ms. Joann only had 2 weeks to make my dress perfect! She was supposed to be taking things easy and relaxing a little but she agreed to continue working with me and I am so grateful because I’m not sure anyone else could have completed the intricate work in time! She didn’t cut any corners or make me feel bad about the delayed dress instead she made me feel confident and listened to what made me feel beautiful. Multiple times during my visits she would pause to ask “how do you feel” and she genuinely cared about my answer. I was so appreciative to be heard when I told her what was feeling right and what wasn’t. Without Joann’s beautiful work I couldn’t have felt as stunning as I did on my wedding day.

Joann is warm and kind, and she has YEARS of experience. I wanted sleeves sewn onto my wedding gown and there was quite a bit of raking in the gown, in addition to a bustle and a hem. She walked me through several iterations of the aforementioned sleeves and we worked together to find the perfect solution. She is so ridiculously talented. My gown was far too big and she took it in multiple times until I was happy with the fit. Don’t hesitate to book with her, she’s amazing.

A Master of her Craft!
I was referred to Joann by Maggi Bridal where I bought my Justin Alexander dress. Before my first appointment I was very anxious. I’m a self conscious person who is still working on accepting my body shape and was worried I’d be faced with a hyper-critical seamstress. However, within minutes of meeting Joann, all of those concerns disappeared! She is very down to earth and personable, and made me feel so comfortable each visit. Joann is also flexible and accommodating to schedules. Due to my work, I was only available to come in on weekends, which was no problem for Joann. Additionally, she was willing to reschedule without hesitation when I had a family emergency. More importantly, the quality of her work is phenomenal! My gown required some cup inserts, taking in on the sides, length alterations, and a bustle. The number of compliments I received and continue to receive via social media is a testament to the quality of Joann’s work!

I was SO nervous to book a vendor for bridal alterations and Ms. Joann made all my nerves melt away when I first met her. I have never met anyone who is so knowledgeable and passionate about their craft as Ms. Joann is. She is truly an expert in this field and I seriously don't know how I got so lucky to cross paths with her! My Maggie Sottero gown was made for someone who is 5'11'' (I'm 5'1'') and I have a larger chest than most and Joann literally made my dress look like it was custom made for me with how well it fit. She was so accommodating with my difficult work schedule and helped me fit 4 alteration appointments in (I needed a lot of hem work with how short I am haha). Ms. Joann literally made my dress dreams come true and my family and I really bonded with her because of how amazing of a person she is, which is just the cherry on top! I LOVE Ms. JoAnn!! I live in a small town and was concerned about finding someone I’d trust with the alterations of my wedding dress. My dress is backless with only a small illusion sleeve that has intricate beading/stones all over the gown. Ms. JoAnn was able to alter the sleeves to give me the support I needed, manage he hemline and the massive amounts of tulle that made up my train. It fit perfectly and was so beautiful! Ms. JoAnn is a pleasure to work with, I thoroughly enjoyed my visits with her. She gives honest advice, which I love. So you know you can trust her. Joann Wins "Wedding Angel" Award
If there was one silent hero in my whole wedding experience, it was Joann James. You would never know that my expertly tailored gown was essentially re-made by Joann from the waist out. I purchased my dress one size up to fit my wider-than-average rib cage, which inevitably made the gown much to big everywhere else. From our first meeting, Joann didn't miss a beat. She patiently and meticulously disassembled the gown at the waist, and shortened the skirt from the middle (through at least 7 layers of oddly-attached tulle) to preserve the delicate lace embroidery around the bottom. I truly thought this puzzle of a dress might stump her at some point! But I should have known better, because Joann is a master of her craft. Do yourself a service and hire this woman immediately! She is a true talent and an absolute pleasure to work with.

Joann did a beautiful job altering my wedding gown! I ordered my gown from a bridal boutique in Washington, DC and finding local alterations was definitely a stressor for me. Once I met with Joann, my fears were instantly relieved.
She altered both my gown and my mother’s gown and did such a great job on both. She really took the time to ensure our gowns fit correctly from every angle!

Joann did an amazing job altering my dress. It was perfect for the wedding. My dress required several alterations and she was able to accommodate them all, was familiar with my designer and exceeded my needs and expectations. She was able to adjust the dress after the dress store that sold it to me advised me incorrectly and sold me the wrong size. Would highly recommend Joann for anyone in this area.

If you want someone who is kind, caring, professional, has tons of experience and wont over charge you....Joann is your person! She listened to everything I wanted and gave me her professional opinion on what would and wouldn't work for my type of dress. After spending some money on my dress I felt more than comfortable leaving it with her. When I went to my fitting after her alterations everything was absolutely perfect. I loved working with Joann. I bought my dress off the rack so she had to take the dress in quite a few sizes and she did a fabulous job! I was so happy with how my dress turned out. After realizing that my dress was ordered at least a size too large, JoAnn basically had to take apart and re-build the top portion of my Lis Simon dress to ensure the lace details lined up just right when making the alterations. She did a fantastic job making sure everything fit to my body, no detail was overlooked. The alterations looked amazing and fit me perfectly when I picked it up for my bridal portraits! I was beyond thrilled at her expertise and her quality of the alterations. JoAnn has been doing alterations for a very long time and it definitely shows in her work. She was also an extreme pleasure to work with, and really takes the time to get to know who she is working with. She was very flexible when scheduling my fittings, and got everything done on time. I would highly recommend her, just don't wait until the last minute as she does book up very quickly!

I am so glad I found Joann for my wedding dress alterations. She has decades of experience and meticulous attention to detail, and it shows in the quality of her work. She made me feel so comfortable and made me laugh :). I loved that I could have private fittings at her home (vs in a tailor's shop where anyone can walk in). I do not have enough good things to say about Joann. She was wonderful from my first appointment to my last. She was so very detailed and wouldn’t stop until my dress was perfect. I loved that about her. When you’re entrusting someone with something so precious, you want them to take their time and do everything they can to ensure that the dress looks and feels perfect. I was so amazed by how much time and effort she put into my dress. I felt absolutely beautiful on my wedding day.

I purchased a Hayley Page dress for my big day, and after spending a good amount on the dress, and needing alterations to make it perfect, wanted to ensure I found someone that could keep it a true Hayley Paige dress. Nothing worse than specifically buying a designed, only to have alterations make it not a designer piece any more.
Hayley dresses are known for there skits, and mine had 12 separate layers; I also needed 5 inches removed, and wanted to switch from heels to flats from my ceremony to reception. I also needed some adjustments to the bodice and to be able to bustle the back and dance the night away.
After digging through many reviews I kept coming back to Joann because her great reviews, work with designer dresses, and reasonable pricing. At my first appointment I instantly knew I made the right choice; Joanne knew exactly what to do with my dress, and ensured it was perfect. I had multiple appointments to ensure before she cut anything it was just right, and she sewed it back together just as the designed would have. Something as complicated as measuring all the layers and ensuring they were back to scale after hemming, and taking each layer off and hemming at the waist due to the horse hair edging, seemed like no feet to her- but to me I knew it was very time consuming and her attention to detail was impeccable.
By the time we were done, my dress was perfectly hemmed for my ceremony heels, and I had 38 bustle points (yup- 38!!) all around to make sure I could dance the night away. Not only was every part of my dress perfectly altered to fit me like a custom dress- Joanne is one of the most genuine individuals I have met. It was so great having her be part of my bridal experience.
Do not question it- go to Joann for your dress alterations- you will NOT regret it!

I took her my mother's wedding gown ( that I had already had another seamstress begin altering, and was not happy with) and she completely understood my vision for the alterations and more! Attached are photos of my mother's gown (30 year old gown) along with my bridal portraits from this year. Joann redesigned the back, providing a V where it was originally completely sheer. She also removed the sleeves and used the original lace from the sleeves and re-attached to the back, lining the V with the lace. She also removed the high turtleneck neckline, which was made of lace, and lowered the neckline to more of a ballet look and re-attached the original lace. Joann also fixed the buttons that were added to the back of the dress (also from the original sleeves). The previous seamstress had not evenly spaced the buttons, and Joann corrected that. My mother did not have a bustle, so Joann also did that for me to show off the detailing on the train. I would not trust anyone else with my mother's gown, highly recommend Joann---and book early! She is dedicated to her craft and will spend time to make sure it is all perfect!!

Because of the fabric, she suggested a different style of bustle than a traditional style, and it was beautiful. I also really enjoyed spending time with her, and she created a very relaxing atmosphere. It was a pleasure to go to her!

Ms. JoAnn was one of the most wonderful and memorable experiences of my wedding process. She is knowledgeable about ALL things wedding gowns and has so many years of experience in the industry. I trusted every bit of advice she gave, and she never disappointed through the whole process. JoAnn was very flexible with my very precise schedule; I was living 800 miles away from her (where my wedding was taking place), and she never flinched to squeeze me in when I was coming into town. She is so caring. No only towards her clients, but to the dresses she alters. I never had any concerns leaving my dress with her, and relying on her completely to make my dress perfect! My gown material was silk dupioni; a fabric I had never heard of and was concerned it would be difficult to alter and make look flawless and seamless due to it's delicate material. Ms. JoAnn proved me wrong! She worked wonders, and my extremely long train was bustled beautifully. She also handmade a cathedral length veil for me in a very short notice and made all of my dreams come true! All of the moving parts from the gown, a beaded belt, a veil, and a lace jacket/topper were flawless and beautifully fit all thanks to her. I highly recommend JoAnn from the simplest alterations to the most complex needs of remaking a whole gown. Joann was the best part of my entire wedding planning process! With all of the stress that comes with a wedding, finding my dream dress and having it fit me was probably the scariest part. My body type is not the easiest to fit and having a background in apparel design and construction, I tend to be very particular. Joann fit me into her schedule and listened to every concern I had. After each fitting I felt more and more beautiful and confident. She kept me laughing and kept a smile on my stressed out face. The day after I got my dress back I had my bridal portraits. When I got my pictures back I was mortified to see that my dress was too big because stress was causing me to lose weight. We called Joann that night (9 days before my wedding) and she fit us in for a last minute alteration. For the big day, the dress was PERFECT. She made my dream come true! I will never be able to say enough good things about Joann and I need to find something else to alter so I can keep her in my life!

In the 11 months that I have been a "bride-to-be" I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of fantastic individuals. Of them all, Joann has been by far my absolute favorite. Not only is she incredibly detailed, she also displays creativity and passion in her work and the results are a direct reflection of her talent and love for what she does. When I first met with Joann, I really liked my bridal gown. By the time of my last fitting, I had fallen completely in love with the dress itself and how I was going to look on my wedding day. During the process, we discovered that one method of bustling my dress would cause the bottom to be too poofy and the other would hide the lace detail in the back. Obviously discouraged that I would have to make a sacrifice somewhere, Joann managed to create a unique combination of the two that is equally functional as it is incredibly beautiful without charging an absolute fortune. She also did day of alterations so that I would not have to make another trip from Wilmington to Garner just proving she cares as much about her brides as she does perfecting her work. Many others would have let me walk out with an imperfect dress or told me to come back another week.
Overall, I cannot speak more highly of Joann, her experience, character, and talent - she is truly a rare find! It was a privlege to be one of her brides and I look forward to working with her again in the future.

Ms. Joann's work and service were phenomenal and I am truly blessed to have found her! I bought my wedding dress from Kleinfeld Bridal, NYC and was hesitant to let anyone else touch it, however, my schedule did not permit me to travel as often as I needed to get it altered at the shop. Luckily I found Joann James Bridal through Wedding Wire and decided to give it a go.
From the moment Joann removed my dress from the garment bag, she was able to pinpoint exactly where my dress was made, how long it took to make, every piece of material used and even the type of stitching used in the bra cups! I knew from then on that my beloved gown was in good hands. To give you an idea of how delicate my dress is, it has 3 different types of lace, beading, mesh and long train that would need to be drastically hemmed for my 4'11" stature. Not only was Joann able to accomplish all of the needed alterations, she managed to do it in only 2 fittings and in time for my Bridal Portraits.
Like I said, truly a God-send and I would highly recommend her services to any future bride.

Joann was a life saver and worked on it meticulously to get it JUST RIGHT. During my appointments, if there was any part of the fit that I didn't love, she didn't hesitate to fix it and make sure it was exactly how I wanted. I do not think there are enough ways to say thank you and how happy I am with the service we got! Joann got rid of all of my nerves and doubts about my dress fitting correctly and made the gown into my dream dress! She literally took the dress apart and remade it to fit me and my body style. She is one of the sweetest ladies and genuinely cared about me and made sure to fit me into her all ready busy schedule so my dress would be ready by my bridal portraits! I know on my wedding day I will think of her as we are all getting ready!

Ms. Joanne was a pleasure to work with! I had gotten some alterations done to my dress that, to say the least, I was not happy with. Ms. Joanne knew exactly what I wanted, and despite coming to her only a month from my wedding, was able to make all the alterations I needed and work around my bridal portrait schedule! She really took away a lot of stress because I knew my dress was finally in good hands, and it really looked perfect for our day! She made it fit perfectly, while keeping the look and style exactly what I envisioned, and took the time to make a beautiful bustle that actually felt secure despite the heavy fabric of my dress. Your wedding dress should fit like a glove, and with Joann's 40 plus years of experience she is able to accomplish this! Joann was recommended to me and I was so glad I gave her a call! She was able to make my modified A line gown with an open illusion back fit me perfectly! She worked with me in creating the perfect bustle for my dress, and she even helped my mom practice bustling the dress too! Like all of the other reviews we cannot say enough about Joann. From the minute I heard her voice on the phone I knew she was the one and we booked her. Joann knows what she is doing. And her prices are phenomenal. Truly we expected her to charge double what she did. We were a 2-bride wedding and she accommodated us completely. Warm, friendly, and thorough. Joann is a true master of her craft. Her attention to detail and speed of delivery is second to no one in the industry. I am absolutely thrilled by the service I received from her. She was very professional during every encounter we had. She explained to me her background in the fashion industry and I immediately knew I wanted her to be my alterations person. I can't possibly say enough about how wonderful Joann was. Call her. You won't regret it.
I'd purchased a strapless dress on ebay hoping I could have sleeves added to it. When I first met with Joann, she told me she could add a sleeve, but she didn't think it would look good. She could have easily added the sleeve, charged me for it, and let me walk down the aisle not looking my best. I was so impressed that Joann was honest with me about what would and wouldn't look good, it showed she really cares about the final product and the quality of her work- I knew I wanted to work with her. I ended up finding a different dress that already had a short sleeve, and Joann said we could easily change the short sleeve out for a long. She also opened up the neckline, hemmed the dress, added a bustle, took the hips in, and made my Mom's veil from 35 years ago into a veil that beautifully complemented my dress.
After all that work, I showed up to pick up my dress and Joann could tell I wasn't 100% satisfied. The sleeves were exactly what we'd discussed, but talking about it and seeing it are two different things. They didn't look the way I'd imagined them in my head. Joann was so nice about it, helped me pick out another fabric, and redid the sleeves! I LOVED the final product. And to top it all off, I felt like her prices were very reasonable.
Using Joann for my dress alterations was one of the best decisions I made. Joann, thank you for making me feel like the most beautiful version of myself I could possibly be.

Almost two weeks before my wedding day, I realized I was dreading wearing the dress I had initially purchased (almost a year prior) and so I went looking for, and found, a new gown that was everything I had ever dreamed of. The only problem was I needed it altered -- and fast. Ms. JoAnn literally saved the day. She was sweet, calm, reassuring, and, as luck would have it, willing and able to alter my wedding dress with only a week until the big day. I honestly don't know what I would've done without Ms. JoAnn. Even with the time crunch, I never felt like the alterations process was rushed -- in fact, Ms. JoAnn was incredibly thorough and in-depth during each of the appointments we had. She took the time to explain exactly what she'd be doing to my dress to create just the right fit and, after only seeing me once, my gown had been transformed into a garment that was truly made for me. Ms. JoAnn clearly takes pride in her work (and with her impeccable attention to detail, it's not hard to see why!) but, even more that that, she cares about how the bride feels in her wedding dress and won't settle for anything less than perfect. I have never felt more beautiful than I did on my wedding day in that dress, and I owe it all to Ms. JoAnn. You will not regret entrusting her with your gown!
