Grooviest, Boogiest, Most Fantastic Photographer EVER!

Shelly is such a wonderful photographer, we could not recommend her more! She was attentive and professional, giving just enough direction so we never felt lost during the lead up and day of our wedding, while also giving us the freedom to have everything turn out exactly how I imagined. As soon as we saw Shelly's work, we knew she was the photographer for us, and she didn't disappoint. Her style is unmistakable and gave every shot the flair it deserved. I'm not hoping to get married again anytime soon, but if I ever need a photographer in the future, I'm calling Shelly first.

Calming presence & beautiful photos

Shelley was a delight to work with and was (thank the lord) incredibly flexible for our Memorial Day Weekend 2023 wedding in coastal North Carolina. We experienced unseasonably strong storms that weekend that led us to push our wedding back by one day to keep our guests and vendors safe, and she rolled through the chaos right along with us. Our photos were beautiful and her partner even added some drone footage which are now some of our favorite photos from the weekend. I wholeheartedly recommend booking Shelley for her calm and professional demeanor and stunning photos. Rain or shine (or 40+ mph monsoon), she’s got you 😊

The best photographer.

We could not have asked for a better photographer. We knew from the second that we started wedding planning that choosing the perfect photographer was going to the most important decision we could make. Shelley did not disappoint. From the second we hired her she worked to ensure that the logistics aligned with the best photos and seemed to capture all of the many moments effortlessly. Moreover, Shelley and her team captured exactly what we had hoped - the many moments of the day that are often not caught in posed pictures, the happiness that saturates every moment of the event, and the many, many details. An absolute dream!!

Shelley captured our day absolutely perfectly! her photos are already filling our home! She made us feel so comfortable the entire day and had a way of capturing moments without us even knowing there was a camera. I could not say enough wonderful things about her. We were out of town and did not meet until the day of our wedding, but she kept in close contact with us every step of the way with touch points to make sure she had everything organized for the day of and what all we wanted photographed. She kept us on schedule the day off, but was so flexible and accommodating to anything we may have wanted. so thankful for you Shelley! We are so thankful for you!

Amazing work from an amazing person

Shelley is an amazing photographer that provided the best service possible! She made us very comfortable and really led the way whenever we got confused with the wedding details. For my wedding I went with an all-inclusive venue, but I didn't go with their photographer. I could have saved some money by going through them, but I knew for awhile I wanted Shelley to capture our moments. It was well worth it! Definitely my favorite person from out of all of my wedding vendors.

Beautiful Photos, Beautiful Human!

Working with Shelley was a dream. My husband and I were so nervous before our engagement shoot, but Shelley made us so comfortable right away. She took us to absolutely beautiful locations and made the entire process so much fun! We left our engagement shoot feeling like celebrities.

At the wedding she was incredibly professional. She did exactly what she said she wanted to do, she became a part of the event, blending in, weaving in and out of groups and getting incredible candid shots. When I saw the photos I was shocked by the amazing angles she was getting "I didn't even notice she was there" was said more than once. She has a knack for knowing where to look and when, finding those small special moments.

I am so thankful that we will have these photos to treasure forever.

I could go on and on about how amazing it is to work with Shelley! She took two people who do not like having their photo taken into the most relaxed, photogenic pair. Amazing to work with!

Shelley was amazing! Prior to the event date she sent over a helpful timeline to let us know when the best time would be to take pictures based on the sunset. Throughout the day, we never felt pestered to go take pictures. She was great at capturing natural and candid moments, but would offer helpful tips for posing to make the pictures look great. She was so much fun too! I think at one point in the night she joined in on the dance circle we had going! She also was very quick at getting us previews. I think we had them less than a week after the wedding and they blew us away!! The photos are absolutely stunning!!
We also booked her for our engagement shoot that we did in the mountains of North Carolina. That day was super foggy with not much visibility, but she worked her magic and got some incredibly moody, romantic shots of us.

Most amazing photographer

Shelley is the most amazing photographer - from her beautiful aesthetic depicted in her photographs to her kind and calming personality. She made us feeling confident and beautiful throughout our wedding day! We even had the opportunity to do a day -after photo shoot without the nerves and stress of the day (these were my absolute favorites). I can’t say enough incredible things about Shelley! Nothing but wonderful things to say about Shelley!

Shelley is absolutely amazing to work with! We searched through tons and tons of photographers before we reached out to book with Shelley. We decided that our photographer would be one of our "splurge" items, and it was worth every single penny!!

We had an engagement shoot with Shelley in October 2019 in the Appalachian mountains...with two dogs, and the pictures turned out amazing. She later shot our wedding in October 2020, and once again, just stunning pictures! She scouted out shooting locations and was able to capture those gorgeous golden hour photos each time she photographed us.

Shelley is a great communicator, so kind, and laid back...just what you want out of a person who will be spending your entire wedding day with you. We never felt awkward during our engagement/wedding shoot-- she helped us out with some posing, but always kept things light and made it fun. I have nothing but great things to say about her talent and how she runs her business! We've had endless amounts of people reach out to us wanting to know who our photographer was. We will cherish these photographs forever!

Gorgeous photos, great direction, professional and friendly

What drew me to Shelley were her outdoor shots in her portfolio (I mean, wow) coupled with her ability to capture the emotion of the day without photos being too staged. That’s a tough combo to find! It took us a long time to find the right venue (14th time is a charm!) and it was important to me that our photos would be able to capture it. Shelley was my #1 choice for photographer and I am so so happy she was available- I was SO nervous she’d already be booked. I know i made the right choice with her as a vendor because she overdelivered with minimal input from me. She gave me a recommendation for timelines based on sunset times/ typical weather patterns and also reassured me that we’d still be flexible. When it rained on our big day I wasn’t even upset because I knew she’d be able to work with it. She killed it with subpar/ changing weather and wasn't afraid to get a little rained on or dirty. Shelley is so easy to work with, responsive, and basically one of those people whose presence just puts you at ease. I froze up/ was anxious during an engagement shoot with a less experienced photographer which was obvious in the resulting photos. Because of that experience I really appreciated Shelley’s gentle direction and tweaks she’d make and prompts she gave us for more natural photos. She’s got an inherently laid-back confidence about herself and is someone who you meet and immediately feel like you’re old friends. I can’t say enough about how happy I am with the choice to have Shelley as a vendor!!

Love love love our wedding photos!

Shelley is an excellent wedding photographer. She was very flexible with our elopement during COVID. Our wedding photos were magical and whimsical. They look like they were in a fairy tale and in a magazine. I’m truly obsessed with the quality and beauty of our photos. Shelley is also really easy to work with and has a strong attention for details. She gave us a huge variety of photos and edited about 450. I was truly impressed and I highly recommend her for your wedding.

Cherished forever

I first found Shelley through the internet and her photos jumped out at me as beautiful and really capturing the fun and natural beauty of the day and place. We weren’t able to meet Shelley person until the day before our wedding, and though I was afraid it was going to be awkward, Shelley made us feel comfortable and confident. She caught so much joy on our wedding day and so many special and fleeting moments. I love to look back at our sunset couple’s photos and how much fun we are having. They capture us perfectly, and Shelley had a unique way of making us feel like we could just be ourselves and not worry about them being there taking photos. Worth every penny!

My wife Alex and I both work in the hospitality industry and did not want an extravagant wedding with big expenses, big band and big stress. We’ve seen it all and decided that the most important thing was for us to be together and to share our love with some of our closest family and friends. However, we also decided the one exception to all of this would be to find a great photographer – we found just that and more with Michelle Elyse Photography!

From our first e-mail communication to our first meeting in person, Shelley was professional, warm and most importantly, comforting to the bride. She is clearly experienced and knows exactly how to create a fun environment that brings out the smiles in all of us! When our time with her was up, Alex and I both decided that she was a fantastic choice and certainly worth every penny. This was made even more apparent when we received our sneak peaks shortly after our big day. I’ll let her portfolio speak for itself, but rest assured you will absolutely love your photos!

Shelley is a magician. From the moment I saw her pictures on Instagram, I knew that I needed her to photograph our engagement and wedding pictures. I cannot speak highly enough about Shelley. She was absolutely amazing. Firstly, she was so personable and kind. Shelley has an impeccable eye for capturing moments in their purest form.

Shelley is an incredible photographer, and her work speaks for itself. What her photos can’t tell you is that Shelley is professional and kind. For our wedding, we really wanted to capture the candid moments, and Shelley did a perfect job of balancing our desire for true candids with the expertise to know we would want some posed photos. Shelley and her partner (we hired a second shooter) also worked tirelessly to capture hundreds of breathtaking photos in what felt like 100 degree, heavy, NC heat. Even when I was cranky - and there were a few of those moments given the heat - Shelley stayed upbeat, keeping our wedding party and family on task and moving through the photos.

I would recommend Shelley to anyone getting married, especially if you are getting married outdoors. She really has an eye for capturing moments in their most pure form. When I look back on photos from our wedding, I am continuously amazed by the genuine moments she was able to freeze into photos. Shelley’s photography is worth every penny and more, and we could not be more grateful to her for so beautifully capturing our big day. Thank you, Shelley!!!

Working with Shelley felt like working with a close friend, if that close friend was an incredibly talented and competent photographer. My wife discovered her through a friend’s photos and thereafter kept going back to her portfolio - even before the wedding we couldn’t imagine the day through anyone else’s lens (or eye!). Her wedding photos are both expansive in the magnificence of the natural scenes she selects as well as intimate in the quiet emotions she is able to capture. Her style in editing is subtle - she does not overwhelm you by oversaturating everything in happy pastels; rather, her finished products draw the viewer into the details of the portrait through the skillful use of a slight grayscale, and make the richness of the colors all the more apparent through her use of contrast. Shelley is uncannily skillful at catching the best light and her subjects within it. She somehow manages to snap poignant little moments while everyone in the wedding is running around - she is a great observer. We also were impressed by the dedication and creativity with which she approached location scouting… she definitely won’t just park your wedding party in front of the nearest acceptable looking background! The images that we got and the fun we had getting them were all because of Shelley’s adventurous spirit and ability to put people at ease. Her communication in leading up to the event was detail oriented and especially helpful in terms of planning our timeline; it was clear that she is incredibly experienced. She was excellent at crowd management of a large wedding party, and was able to efficiently use dedicated portrait time by giving clear instructions and prompting spontaneous looking arrangements. We also highly recommend adding an additional session, whether as an engagement shoot or a day-after shoot. It is such a privilege to have her work to look back on for years to come!

Shelley's work is unbelievable and she truly captured our day perfectly. From the second my husband and I looked at her work we knew she was the one for us! Hartman Outdoor Photography was recommended to us by our wedding planner, Sarah Shumay, and couldn’t be more thankful because I can’t possibly speak highly enough of Shelley Harman. From the moment my husband, Jamie, and I met her she had a fun, yet calming presence, was easy to work with and very responsive (even just that is a gift in what can be the hectic world of wedding planning). She absolutely spares no time or energy when it comes to her preparation and devotion to her clients— she scouted an amazing spot in the mountains of North Carolina for our engagement photos. On the day of, it rained the entire shoot which you might think would have put a damper on the experience. Think again—thanks to Shelley, we not only had an blast but also received absolutely stunning photos despite the fact that there was cloud cover blanketed over the landscape nearly the whole time. We were told countless times by friends and family that they had never seen engagement photos like ours and that they were a true work of art. We have a 30 inch by 40 inch canvas of one of them hanging in our home. During the engagement shoot and again during our wedding, she made us feel totally comfortable and has a unique ability to give just the right amount of the direction so that you feel like you know what to do but don’t end up with photos that look forced or overly posed. She is capable of capturing both the widespread striking, beauty of whatever landscape she has thoughtfully selected but also the up close, intimacy of private moments between two people during some of the most precious days of their lives. My husband and I couldn't believe how lucky we got to have Shelley photograph our adventure elopement in South Iceland! She was easy to communicate with and so personable in person. My husband doesn't comment on services very much, but he was so impressed with Shelley's creativity and fearlessness in getting the best shots. She would sometimes be laying on the ground and get completely soaked by the waterfalls, and she would have us stand so close to the edge of a cliff and so close to the waterfalls. My husband got to see a sneak peek of a few shots on her camera, and his mouth literally dropped at how beautiful the photos were. We completely trusted her opinion on the stops we made in Iceland not only because she has been to Iceland before, but also because she just has that creative vision to know what looks good (her website/blog says it all). Another bonus is that she scouts the wedding ceremony area for you beforehand and chose our ceremony site, which we are so grateful for. It was intimate (away from the crowds), peaceful, and beautiful. If you and your partner are looking for someone who loves candid photos, dynamic photos with a lot of movement, and epic landscape photos, Shelley is the best photographer for that. We can't recommend her enough!

The Hartmans are some of the best photographers I have ever come across (and I must have looked at a zillion Pinterest posts, wedding blogs, and magazines!). Their style is unparalleled and they are an absolute dream to work with. If you are looking for a photographer, look no further because the Hartmans are the best!

We met Josh and Shelley years ago when they photographed a friends wedding - I remember thinking how fun they were to work with and how they made even the shyest person comfortable in front of the camera. After seeing the photos from that wedding (and picking my jaw up off the floor because of how stunning they were!), we knew we wanted to hire them when we got married - there was just nobody else that compared.

Once we got engaged and picked our date, they were the first people we called. They were so responsive throughout the whole time leading up to the wedding, and after taking our engagement pictures with them we could not have been more excited for the wedding. On our wedding day, they showed up early to scout out some spots before meeting us to take pictures of everyone getting ready. They picked some stunning locations for our first look (I still get tears in my eyes every time I look back at photos from that moment!) and wedding party photos, and kept everyone upbeat and laughing during the family photos. Once the wedding started, they seemed to be able to be everywhere without being intrusive at all, and were able to capture the most intimate moments and all of the details perfectly. During the reception, they were not afraid to get out on the dance floor to not only get some fabulous shots of our guests enjoying themselves, but also to show off some of their awesome dance moves!

Hiring the Hartmans was the best decision we made with our wedding, hands down. Not only were their photos drop-dead gorgeous, but they were incredibly fun and easy to work with. Thank you Josh and Shelley for capturing our wedding in the most perfect way!

Josh and Shelley are truly amazing. From the first time we reached out to them about about possibly photographing our engagement and wedding day pictures, they were extremely kind and professional. They are such a wonderful, laid back couple. We first had the opportunity to meet them at a local brewery in Raleigh in Sept (about one month before our engagement shoot), which gave us the chance to get to know each other and brainstorm for our upcoming shoot. We had a BLAST wandering around downtown Asheville and the grounds of the Biltmore Estate during our engagement session. Being that it was the first time I had taken professional pictures, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but Josh and Shelley made it so much fun; we really felt like we were hanging out with friends that afternoon. On our wedding day they had already scoped out some great locations/ideas for pictures ahead of time. They captured so many special moments, from our getting ready pictures all the way until our bubble send-off at the end of our reception. They were even in the crowd dancing with us, taking pictures during our reception. They made sure to include certain pictures we requested and also added their own creativity, so we had an amazing mix of photos. We were also very appreciative of how quickly they got our pictures to us after each shoot. We honestly could not have asked for better photographers - they are extremely talented, creative, and have given us pictures that we will look back on and cherish forever. We have received so many compliments on the pictures they took, and we highly recommend Hartman Outdoor Photography - they are fun, adventurous, and the absolute best!

We used Hartman Outdoor Photography for both our engagement and wedding pictures. It was one of the best choices we made during our wedding planning process. Our pictures are beautiful. They captured the day exactly as I remember it and weren't afraid to get out on the dance floor to get some great actions shots. Gosh, we just love the Hartmans!! Josh and Shelley did our engagement and wedding photos and we couldn't be happier! Our pictures turned out beautifully, and working with Josh and Shelley was a dream.

We planned our wedding long distance and they were very accommodating in setting up our engagement session right around Christmas while we were back in town visiting. Our first meeting with Josh and Shelley was over our engagement session and my fiancé (at the time) and I were surprised at how quickly we felt comfortable with them. Again, our engagement pictures turned out amazing!

In between our engagement session and wedding communicating with them was very easy and they responded quickly to all our emails leading up to our Big Day.

The next time we saw Josh and Shelley was on our wedding day. They showed up early to get the lay of the land and with plenty of time to take pictures of us all getting ready (some of our favorites are the candids during this time). They flowed seamlessly throughout the day, much of the time we didn't notice they were there, until we saw the pictures of everything they captured! I will say they are a blast to work with, Josh tore up the dance floor! And they left us an adorable picture from our photobooth!

We got a sneak peek of a number of our photos on their blog a few days(!!!) after our wedding and got all of our photos back Less than 2 weeks after our wedding.

I couldn't have imagined having better photographers to work with for such a special time in our lives. We are SO glad that we have not only the beautiful photos to remember it by, but the warm memories of working with Josh and Shelley as well!

Shelley and Josh are the 2 most naturally talented individuals, who also happen to have beautiful adventure-seeking souls. I am the first to admit that I am awkward in front of a camera and hate being the center of attention, so I assumed my pictures would convey that. To my delight, that was not the case. They were able to capture pure moments of happiness and emotion without me even knowing they were there. To this day I look at my pictures with the biggest grin on my face, and I can't even begin to count how many times I have said I am glad I went with Shelley and Josh. Josh and Shelley were AMAZING to work with. They are both very personable, warm, down to earth and energetic people, my wife and I both feel lucky we met them! We got together several times before the wedding (they also did an engagement shoot for us), and they were incredibly helpful in helping us figure out what what we needed for our event and how they would fit in. We also already new we loved their style, and the energy and creativity they brought to their work. When our wedding day rolled around, it was one aspect of the event we could feel really comfortable with knowing our photography (and our memories) were in such capable hands. Josh and Shelley both brought a different eye and different perspective to the photography, and it was great having them work together as a team. We knew that between the two of them, everything was covered and not just from one perspective! During the ceremony, they blended in effortlessly and we didn't even notice they were there. Afterwards, they did a great job capturing the events of the day, and not just from the sidelines... Josh was right there in the thick of it on the dance floor! Allow me to go ahead and put this out there - these guys are the best photographers around. Period.

We had 175 people at our wedding and every single one of them has remarked at just how breathtakingly beautiful our wedding photos turned out. The Hartman's are true professionals and passionate about photography. From the first time we met with them, they were prepared with both digital albums as well as hard copy photo books to display all of their previous work. We spent over an hour viewing photos from all sorts of weddings and incredible adventure engagement shoots. Every shot that they showed us was stunning, top-quality photography. Not only were we star-struck with their work, but they are so down-to-earth, nice, and friendly people. Matt and Josh shared a beer while Shelly and I poured through photos. It was clear to us when we left this meeting, that these were the right people for us.

Over the next couple of months, we found them to be very responsive. We also received an engagement shoot from them which we had to reschedule at the last minute, and they were flexible enough to work with us. They asked us to complete questionnaires and made certain that they knew what was most important to us, so that they could be sure to capture those moments on the big day.

On our wedding day, Josh and Shelly showed up early and were dressed in black from head to toe - complete with cameras, lenses, and everything else you could think of. I believe they had 4 cameras with them just in case something went wrong with one of their cameras. They captured every minute of our day, from the beautiful rustic scenery of the horse farm, to getting ready, right down to the dance moves during the reception. There wasn't a single detail that was missed.

I wish I had words to tell you how much we love our photos. IF the Hartmans are available for your wedding, I recommend snatching them up before someone else does. You will be glad that you did!

We loved working with Josh and Shelley. From engagement pictures to the wedding day, they were professional, helpful, and friendly. We contacted Shelley about taking some photos to celebrate our 5th anniversary in downtown Raleigh. She was prompt at getting back to us and had such a great enthusiasm for our shoot ideas. When we met up to take the photos, we both instantly loved her! She was so sweet and made us feel very relaxed. We had a great time and a short time later received our absolutely beautiful photos! Our wedding was in Wrightsville Beach in August 2014 (I'm a little late writing the review!) and we cannot put into words how happy we were with the Hartman's and the end product. They are the ideal photographers - responsive, flexible, laid-back, but also helped gently keep everyone on schedule and "direct" our guests for the best pictures. Josh and Shelley were simply amazing - our guests raved about them at the reception and still highly compliment their work and personalities on the day of our wedding when they see our pictures now. Our guests loved them and so did we - we have the most gorgeous, natural photos that captured all of the fun, heartfelt moments from our wedding and we couldn't have asked for more. First off, this is an extremely overdue review... Shame on me, but here goes:

Let me start by saying that my husband, Ian, and I live in MN. We decided to get married in NC (hadn't even been there before!). We decided on Holden Beach, then the search for vendors was on. I stumbled upon Hartman Outdoor Photography when looking on WeddingWire. I had narrowed it down to them and one other couple. I sent inquiries to both, but was praying it would work out with Josh and Shelley. I loved their photography style much more, but was nervous that their prices would be higher and that they'd charge a fee for having to travel to Holden Beach (which is completely understandable, but we just couldn't afford another expense like that with already having a destination wedding)... Man, did God ever bless us! Not only were they less expensive than the other photographers, but they were also willing to travel for free because they had never been to Holden Beach before and wanted to venture there! I was absolutely elated!! Timeless photography was one of the most important things I wanted to make sure we had for our wedding, and I landed the best photographers in NC!!

From the get-go, Shelley and Josh were easy to get a hold of and discuss our wedding package along with what was going to happen on our special day. When our wedding day came, Shelley and Josh were timely (they had a 3ish hour drive) and even ended up staying longer than they were supposed to because Josh just couldn't stop photographing all of our guests' crazy energy and dance moves. It was so great to see how involved they were with not only us but also with our guests. Numerous guests commented on how awesome our photographers were and that they couldn't wait to see all of the shots they were capturing.

We love Josh and Shelley and hope to photograph with them again. They are incredibly talented and capture timeless moments perfectly. They're hands-down THE BEST and as down-to-earth as people can get!

We adored Shelley and Josh! We planned our wedding from out-of-state. We emailed lots but did not actually meet Shelley and Josh until the day of our wedding. We immediately felt comfortable with them. By the end of the wedding, we felt like we were old friends! They are simply wonderful people! It was important to me that my photographers not only be friendly with the wedding party but also the guests. Everybody loved them and talked about how friendly they were. Their eye for photography is fantastic. We absolutely love our photos. Josh and Shelley are the best! Our photos came back just awesome. They are so fun and really make you feel comfortable (when its hard to be!). We were looking for a photographer that was a little outside the box, just not your typical "stand here and pose" type photographer, and they nailed it. I love how they are constantly working in the background, you barely even notice that they're taking your picture! Some of my favorites from our wedding are 100% candid. Where to begin about Josh and Shelley?? We knew they were right for us from the first time we met. We bonded over travel and beer while perusing their INCREDIBLE wedding portfolios. The pictures were more than just photographs, each one was a true work of art. It was clear that they captured the unique emotions and energy at each wedding. Josh devoted an afternoon to us for our engagement portrait shoot in Chapel Hill. He made it fun and playful and did a great job incorporating our pup, Penny. Josh and Shelley both traveled to Lake Lure (the wedding venue) a month prior to the wedding to shoot my bridal portraits. Again, the day was so enjoyable, my smiles and laughs captured in the pictures are genuine because I was having such a great time with the two of them! On the wedding day, the two arrived early to scout out all the good spots. Josh stuck with the groomsmen and Shelley with the bridesmaids. The pictures of the wedding party and ceremony are absolutely breathtaking!! Then during the reception, Josh and Shelley were photography ninjas, doing anything and everything for the best shot of the party. Even while photographing in the middle of the dance floor, they fed the energy instead of taking any away. Josh even put down his camera for a second to join in a break dance circle! Josh and Shelley made everything so personal for me and my husband. In fact, after the wedding, the pair packed up their cameras and joined us for the after party! Before I had my wedding dress, before I had my venue, before I even had my wedding date...I had Hartman Outdoor Photography. I discovered these two amazing photographers early on in my wedding planning process. I was so impressed with the caliber of their work and how effortlessly and beautifully they captured their weddings and engagements. I mean...you know you're in love with your wedding photographers when you base your wedding date according to their availability (honestly...I speed-dialed Josh when I found my venue and would only pick a date they could shoot for us). We just had our engagement shoot with Shelley and the pictures were stunning! Having never been professionally photographed, Shelley immediately made us feel at ease and captured the sweetest moments. Josh and Shelley Hartman were absolutely wonderful to work with. We met them at the Carolina Bridal show and were really impressed with their work. Their photography is very unique and they are willing to go to extremes to get the perfect shot. Our engagement pictures turned out amazing; Josh was so accommodating, and did a great job to get us to feel relaxed and comfortable. We are absolutely IN LOVE with our wedding pictures!! It was a rainy weekend. I think that is probably every brides WORST nightmare. Josh and Shelley showed up with a great attitude and told me, “We’re gonna make every bride want to get married in the rain.” The pictures with the umbrella outside turned out to be some of my favorites. I could not say enough how amazing it was to work with Josh and Shelley as our photographers for our wedding day. From booking, to planning, to taking the pictures on the actual day, they were very responsive, professional, and fun! They made us feel completely comfortable taking pictures on the day of our wedding and also got us extremely excited about enjoying the moment, which came across extremely well in all of our pictures! Not to mention, we got all of our pictures back in snap, the turnaround was so quick! Our friends and family looked at our photos and everyone was so excited about how GREAT they looked! I've heard horror stories about couples waiting a super long time to get their wedding pictures back, but not us! I would highly recommend them for your event! You won't be disappointed! Josh and Shelley were beyond amazing. Not once during our wedding planning process did we question our choice. They were beyond attentive and that is so important during the hectic planning process. As well, they made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera during both the Engagement Session and the Wedding day. Also, they completely embraced and capture the love we share for our dog. But most importantly, the pictures were incredible. They truly are amazingly, talented artists. I would recommend these two in a heartbeat! No question.

For our DIY wedding, we had initially chosen to skip the photographer; in all my browsing and research I simply wasn't excited or interested in what I found to be available. It was only by chance that I stumbled on a photo by Hartman Photography on this site. That single photo immediately drew me in. I ended up pouring through and admiring all the photos on their website for an hour. My fiance and I both agreed- we loved the photo-journalistic style and both the rawness and elegance of what is captured in every shot. It was exactly what we wanted and Shelley was available for our day. After our first conversation, I was confident that Shelley understood what we were looking for. She was professional and positive from the start. Our wedding had some unique traditions- Shelley was not only accommodating, but excited to capture these moments. I want to stress how respectful and professional Shelley was on the day of the wedding. Ours was a small, rather intimate ceremony and photographing key moments while not being a distraction was natural to her. After the ceremony, while she took photos of just the two of us, her energy and delightful attitude helped us feel at ease: she guided us through this time and we eagerly accepted her suggestions- it was fun! Shelly had the presence of mind to work with the opportunities that were presented to make great photos- outdoor weddings come with unexpected events, and ours was no exception (random monsoon weather, escaped farm animals). She was prepared and undaunted by the challenges that sprang up. We are all thrilled at the photographs we received- beyond great angles and composition, they convey the depth and detail of our celebration. Planning a wedding had its stresses, but for me, the photographer was not one of them. I highly recommend Hartman Outdoor Photography for their skill, professionalism, value and quality. My rating of a solid 5 is not casually given- they deserve it.

These two, what gems. Book with them now, seriously, because they are filling up, and it's for a good reason. Here is why:

If you are nervous/shy in taking pictures, they make you feel so comfortable and easy going and not like an idiot
If you aren't, they help you push the envelope with new crazy cool picture ideas.
They take your suggestions, but also have a lot of ideas themselves that they will run by you.
They are so incredibly passionate about what they are doing and are honestly excited to be taking your pictures
They become your friend, in a non-weird way that just makes you want to have pizza and beer with them.
They take their work seriously, and will answer any and all questions you throw their way.
And of course, their photos are SO COOL!!!!!!!!!! Just sign with them already, it is by far the best wedding choice we made, and there are a lot of decisions when planning a wedding.

I met Josh and Shelley at a Bridal Show in Raleigh, NC. As soon as I met them, I knew they were the ones! Although their candid shots on display were beautiful, now I can truly say, that doesn't do them justice!
Shelley conducted our Engagement Photo session here in Raleigh. With both Ken and I being somewhat shy, Shelley made us feel so comfortable and at ease that by the end of the session I felt like we were old friends! This was extremely important to the both of us because we were amazed at how comfortable we were, when just before we were so nervous.
After our destination wedding in Antigua, we had our official reception at the North Hills Club on July 19, 2014. Before we arrived, Josh and Shelley had already scoped out the NC Museum of Art to take some portraits of Ken and I. We were totally impressed!! During the reception, they were absolutely fantastic!! Every single guest I have spoken to at the reception kept saying how talented and approachable Josh and Shelley are! Every single person!!
The turnaround time for the photos was amazing and the quality was better than we could have hoped for. Hiring Josh and Shelley was the best thing we did during our wedding planning.
Thank you so much for making our reception unforgettable and for capturing every single moment on film. You two are so talented - I'm recommending you to everyone I know!

Finally! Our day came (and went too fast). But thanks to Hartman Outdoor Photography, every special moment of our special day was captured. These are the photos we will look through with our friends and family and maybe, (MAYBE!!!) our own little Zibaie for years and years to come! Josh and Shelley are an incredible team and inspiring couple. They have a wonderful way of working together and complimenting each other's unique style. Their professionalism is top notch but without making anyone feel uncomfortable or stiff. And I don't know where they find the time but they had our edited photos up and ready in NO TIME!! We cannot say enough nice things about Josh & Shelley Hartman, and their gorgeous photos! We found them at a bridal show & fell in love with their photos on the spot. The photos they displayed there had such great color & composition, and showed a true appreciation not only for the people in their photos, but also for the nature surrounding them. Equally impressive were the photos that weren't outdoors - they can do it all! The composition and mood in their photos truly shine, making each photo unique and beautiful. We met with them the following week and were impressed by how friendly and personable they were - we knew they would be the ones to photograph our special day. For our engagement photos, we met Josh in downtown Durham in the Tobacco district for ice skating and some candid photos next to old brick building. The end result blew us away - our happiness was captured so perfectly. He did such a great job guiding us and making sure we loosened up for some real candid moments. We didn't think our wedding photos could top our engagement photos, but we were so wrong! As we got ready for our wedding, Josh & Shelley spent time with us capturing the little moments and details that led up to the moment when we saw each other for the first time. During our ceremony, they captured every emotion from us and our guests. For our bridal party portraits, they made sure to keep our enthusiasm and excitement going, and got beautiful shots of us with our families and closest friends. Josh & Shelley worked the room, capturing candid moments with our guests interacting with each other and with us. They got out on the floor in the dancing crowd and took pictures of the action instead of standing on the sideline like so many other wedding photographers would do. Afterwards, they got the pictures back to us very quickly (within a week!) These are photos we will cherish forever & we feel so lucky to have found Hartman Outdoor Photography. They are the best of the best!

Josh and Shelley Hartman were a dynamic duo. They had the perfect balance between having fun and being professional. Shelley helped me stay relaxed while getting ready and Josh was very prompt in answering any question or concern via text, email, or Facebook. The edited pictures were returned very quickly and distributed on a user friendly site. Josh and Shelley even stayed past their allotted time and Josh actually stayed until the end because he was having fun with his sister (who also attended my wedding). Josh and Shelley are nothing short of amazing. I lived in Chicago at the time I found them and they found a time to drive a good distance to meet me in North Carolina to discuss our wedding vision. They are so sweet and their photography is unique and beautiful. We have many of the typical wedding shots which I thought I didn't want but now know I couldn't do without. But, we also have the amazing candid shots that I was looking for. Josh and Shelley Hartman are amazing photographers! We had them do our engagement photos, bridal photos, and our whole day at the wedding. They were so accommodating to everything we wanted to do and where we wanted to go. They never told us how to pose for pictures but gave us some suggestions and told us what looked good behind the lens. We wanted to go out of town for our engagements which they were all for and the pictures turned out amazing. Shelley took my Bridals at JC Raulston Arboretum and used every bit of the place to get the best lighting. Our wedding day we got married at a golf course which we were a bit worried about because it's so bland for pictures but Josh and Shelley were great at making our wedding photos look like they were out of a magazine. They were so excited to do some slow exposure sparkler photos at the end of the night as well. Overall I could not be happier with Josh and Shelley and have recommended them frequently!

Being new to this area (I moved to NC from South Florida last summer), I wasn't familiar with local vendors and although my husband and I eloped, we wanted good pictures to remember the event (even more so because our friends and family would only have pictures to show them.

As a business owner, I didn't have a lot of time to pour over lots of websites. I tend to go with my gut feeling. As soon as I stumbled upon their website, I KNEW. Their pictures literally jumped off the page and made me feel like I was a guest. I am also a professional makeup artist, so I have worked with lots of talented photographers.

They were so easy to communicate with and meeting them in person, I got a good vibe that they would capture what we envisioned. I wanted artistic, editorial-style magazine-worthy pictures.

We were unsure of the exact date of our wedding, but luckily for us, we decided to get married on a Monday afternoon and they were available. Because we eloped (in our backyard), it was like one long photo shoot with Shelly. It was intimate, casual and FUN!

We got the pictures back in one week and I cried (tears of joy!) because it was EXACTLY as I envisioned them to be. The best part, when I posted a collection on my FB page, one friend said "It looks like a spread for Southern Living (magazine)". Mission accomplished.

Josh and Shelly photographed our wedding in April 2014 at the Duke University Chapel in Durham, NC and we could not have been happier with the photos they captured! It truly was a magical day for us and they captured every minute of it! Everyone that saw the sneak peak of our wedding photos on Facebook were blown away by how beautifully they turned out! There isn't a whole lot that we can say about Shelley and Josh that their pictures don't already say for themselves. But my husband and I will try.

We had an absolute blast working with Shelley and Josh for both our engagement session and our actual wedding day. They are some of the most enthusiastic and energetic people we have ever met. You can tell they truly love what they are doing, and want to make your pictures as special and unique as they possibly can. We don't believe that anyone else would have been able to capture our engagement session or our wedding day the way that Shelley and Josh were able to. The pictures they took are absolutely fantastic.

In addition to the pictures Shelley and Josh put together a wedding album with some of the best pictures from our wedding day. We absolutely love what we saw. They also put together a great slide show, music included, that captured the essence of our wedding day, and how much fun it was.

My husband and I are so over the moon with what Shelley and Josh were able to do for us, and how they were able to capture everything. They have provided us the opportunity and ability to relive our wedding ceremony and reception, and our engagement, and all the happiness it all entailed.

We wouldn't recommend anyone else as photographers, no matter the occasion. Shelley and Josh were wonderful.

Josh was amazing to work with. He is so creative and talented, and we were so happy with the results. He came up with a plan and package that worked for us, and he delivered! Fast! I was shocked when he told me just a few weeks after the wedding that our photos were ready to share. We were able to share a simple link he'd given us already curating our wedding day. Everyone we share it with said they felt like they were a part of our special day just through the pictures. It was amazing! We did a few staged shots with Josh and his co-photographer, but honestly, we didn't notice them the rest of the night, but not a shot was missed. Every important moment was captured beautifully. My new wife and I hired Josh and Shelley w/Hartmann Outdoor Photography to do our wedding, and we were BLOWN AWAY by their photos & their services!

They were an absolute pleasure to work with. Having both photographers was very convenient as one was with the groomsmen & the other was with the bride/bridesmaids prior to the ceremony. One of the main reasons we chose them, is because they have a natural ability to capture a moment... unposed, unrehearsed. After the ceremony, we had limited time to take photos in the church due to a NYE mass taking place after our wedding. While Josh was taking photos of the family, Shelley was out scouting out some great spots for the two of us.

I can't begin to explain how great those photos came out! Rustic barns, open fields with a backdrop of trees right at sunset! My wife and I weren't sure how to "pose," but Josh and Shelley did a great job of just getting us to laugh and enjoy each other, and the pictures came out great. Both of our families cannot stop raving about how good they look!

The reception photos were equally as great, as they captured photos of our friends and family having a fun time. Again, they have that uncanny ability to not just take pictures, but capture moments that we will re-live every time we look at our pictures! Best of all, Josh and Shelley were having a fun time doing it! That speaks volumes about the time and effort they put into doing something they love... undoubtedly it results in fantastic pictures!

We got our photos from them extremely fast, we were barely back from the honeymoon when I heard from them that our photos were almost done. The price they charge for the quality of work they do is UNBEATABLE! After seeing our photos, many of our friends are planning on hiring them! Thanks Josh & Shelley!

I emailed Hartman Outdoor Photography for a portrait session for my parents' 25th anniversary as a surprise Christmas present. Josh was quickly responsive and very flexible. I was so appreciative that he spent some time during the holiday season to help me with the surprise. My parents were ecstatic about the surprise and most importantly impressed by the quality of his pictures. He was so prompt with the turn around time. My dad said he "turned some old birds into young chicks". His pictures took a refreshing take on the typical portraits. He was open to suggestions and was very professional. If you don't have a photographer already, I would highly suggest Hartman. This couple will be hot commodity in the upcoming years. They take a lot of care and pride in their work and it shows!

Josh was a great photographer to work with from start to finish. He is very personable and is very easy to get along with. From the moment we first saw his work online, we knew we were fans of his candid style and ability to capture great moments. Josh was very flexible in working with our wedding schedule and stayed around to make sure all of our needs were met. He was very out of the way but managed to capture some great moments! During the reception, there were many occasions where we saw him only after the photo was taken which produced great, natural photos! My husband and I were going to originally get married back in July after he came home from Afghanistan. I started looking for photographers the moment we decided we wanted to have a big wedding since we originally got married in the court house. I happened to come across Josh one day during a random search and fell in love with his photos. Sadly, shortly after my husband got deployment news so we had to cancel our big wedding. However, a few months later we got the all clear and I contacted Josh again to see if he was available for our new date. Thankfully, he was. We planned a quick wedding and Josh was helpful in so many ways. He called me with suggestions, helped with the wedding timeline and was always easy to reach. Most importantly, he was kind and thoughtful and made me feel comfortable even though we hadn't met. The day of the wedding was a madhouse but Josh arrived and got right to work after introducing himself. I had about an hour to get ready because we had several delays. I was running around like a mad women while Josh was by my side capturing photos and offering small comments to calm me down and reminding me to enjoy this day. We made it to the church and not even 3 minutes later I was walking down the aisle. Josh didn't have much time to set up and yet he still captured amazing photos. We didn't have time to take many photos at the church after the wedding but Josh wowed me with the photos he took before the reception. Stunning. Throughout the night, Josh captured moments in time I was not able to experience but now I can relive them all in the comfort of my own home. My husband is deploying shortly and these photos mean more to me than anyone will ever know. I would use Josh again in a heartbeat and suggest everyone who has looked at is portfolio and is just as wowed as I was, to give him a call. He is warm, relaxed and willing to help with anything. I wish I could actually give Josh and Shelley a higher review. Let me explain. I am what you would call a type A personality. I meticulously researched, planned, and orchestrated my own wedding. It was definitely categorized as a do it yourself event. So when I went looking for a photographer I screened dozens of people. I looked through their portfolios, compared prices, and actually found Josh and Shelley to be WORTH MORE than they quoted us. When I compared their work to people who had been in the field for decades and charged 10 times the amount of Josh and Shelley, I found that Josh and Shelley produced better product at a much, much better price. I couldn't believe that I essentially got two photographers for the price of one! When we met to discuss what I wanted they were easy to talk to and later easy to get in touch with. In fact, I would say they were easy to contact than I am! During the wedding, they both were phenomenal! They really seem to have an eye for finding the perfect shot, making me (a bride full of nerves) comfortable, and produced beyond beautiful pictures. I actually look at the pictures and wonder who that beautiful couple is sometimes. I have never felt so gorgeous in my life. I felt that every picture of me was beautiful and I'm the type of person who likes to delete 3/4ths of the pictures taken of her. After the wedding, I didn't have any problems with getting in touch with them which seemed to be the issue all the rest of my friends had with their photographers. My pictures were produced quickly and I had them ready for me before I was even back from my honeymoon. By the time the wedding was over, Josh and Shelley were more than wedding photographers to us, we would call them good friends. I already have recommended them to multiple friends which I believe is the true test of how pleased I was with the work they did and the product they produced.

My wife and I couldn't be more thrilled with the pictures Josh took of our family. He not only has a great eye for photographing smiles and sheer joy, but he also proved exceptional at picking the perfect outdoor location for our session (NC Museum of Art in Raleigh). His friendly personality made things even more enjoyable -- to the point where we forgot he had a camera in hand. That's why we love the pictures so much. They are candid, and clearly capture how we feel about our young boys and each other. We are truly grateful for his time -- and his talent.

Josh and Shelley photographed our wedding in September in Raleigh, NC. They are absolutely lovely and so easy to work with and it was obvious that they genuinely enjoy photographing weddings. We live in Seattle and Josh was great about coordinating everything via phone and email and meeting with us in person the a couple of days before the wedding to discuss details. I am usually quite shy in front of the camera but Josh and Shelley put me at ease immediately. We could not have asked for a better photography experience. And of course, the end result was fabulous as well - we love our wedding photos!

I can't say enough about Josh and Shelley. From day one we loved their work, and they hadn't done tons of weddings yet! Now they've photographed many more and are even more amazing. They were responsive, friendly, and great to work with. I love our photos and can't stop looking at them - they really capture the love and happiness of the day, along with the absolute fun that we and our guests were having. I didn't even know they were there at times, and during other times they were part of the party. Our guests loved them, too! They provided quality photographs at an excellent value. Also, they gave us about 25 of them very quickly, which was so great. And then the entire batch before we were even home from the honeymoon! You can't beat that - its great to relive your day through their pure artistic talent. I can only imagine this duo will continue to take amazing photos and I will recommend them to anyone and everyone (and alreayd have!).

I found Josh and Shelley online. I met with them a short time later and just fell in love with all of their work. There was something about their laid-back attitude but inviting personalities that just made everything about making them my choice photographers feel right. I admit I didn't give them a whole lot of time since my wedding plans had changed at last minute. Not only were they accommodating, they soon became my favorite part about my wedding (besides the groom, of course). Shelley (along with a co-Photographer who deserves praise all his own) captured the most important details of my day with such an artistic and memorable eye. All my wedding guests fell in love with her and she felt like part of this group. I never knew when she taking photos, just that I would love them all. Even though my husband and I were married before the wedding, and already have three children, we spent so much into putting this wedding together (from making every decorations ourselves and coordinating it all), and Shelley really has helped making those memories last. My pictures just went up and the outpour and reviews have been what every person dreams of for their wedding photos. They do so much more than 'just take photos.' They capture the real and natural elements of your day! I am beyond grateful for how hard Shelley worked on this process for me. I will forever be using Hartman Outdoor Photography for every event in our lives. Thank you does not begin to cover the appreciation I have for you both.

Josh and Shelley captured the most beautiful moments on our wedding day! I say moments rather than photos for this reason- Their talent for capturing natural moments between family, friends, bride and groom makes for the most excellent photographs to cherish, I noticed, more so after seeing the final photos that you can find someone who will snap a family picture if you tell everyone to look at the camera and smile, but it takes TRUE TALENT to capture the special moments as they are naturally happening. Shelley and Josh maximize on capturing the event as it is naturally occurring. They were also able to maximize time spent because their ability to tag team, and weaved through the event seamlessly without disturbing any guests or ceremonies. Also, they are very comfortable people to be around, which sounds silly but makes a world of difference on the most stressful day. The commitment and creativity I observed while they shoot the wedding was unbelievable. They have several camera's and lenses, which they often switched for certain photo's, they were always aware of the lighting and best places to photograph (and take excellent outdoor photo's). The value and quality we received is unbeatable, especially being able to access all the photos! After receiving the photo's and seeing my wedding through the eye's of Josh and Shelley, I can honestly say it was magical. And my wedding photo "like's" on Facebook are blowing up! Couldn't Thank them enough for the work they did!

We had Josh photograph our wedding and that hands down was the best decision we could have made for our special day. Our guests loved him and absolutely LOVE his work. We have three couples in our wedding party that have asked for his information, because they said they have never seen better work. He captured more moments than I ever thought possible in one day. I very highly recommended them. Not only because they do amazing work but because they are also amazing people.

Josh and Shelley were amazing! They sat down with us before our event to get an idea of who we were, what are ceremony and reception was going to entail, and how we wanted to capture the day. They had a plan of how to best capture the ideas in our head while understanding that we did not want to spend hours on staged shots. From the word go they were both able to blend into the background while being ever present. The pictures they captured are a beautiful tribute of our special day, full of amazing candid shots, as well as natural looking staged shots. We asked Josh & Shelley to photograph our wedding in Burlington after one of my close friend's used them last fall for her wedding on Lake Gaston. At her wedding and ours, they were extremely personable, easy-going, flexible, and professional making them a pleasure to work with. Their documentary style of photography enables them to capture feelings and moments that you can keep forever. Having the two of them there ensures that a moment will not be missed on camera. The pictures that we have seen from the wedding are phenomenal, and we are very excited to see the rest! I highly recommend them.

We also had them do our engagement pictures, which turned out wonderful-we had received TONS of compliments from our friends and family.

Firstly, may I just say that these two are INCREDIBLE! We hired Josh and Shelley to chronicle our wedding day, and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. One huge advantage to having two photographers is that they were able to focus on different aspects of the wedding with such fine detail and attention -- it's amazing how fast the day goes by and I often wonder what beautiful memories may not have been captured had we not had two amazing photographers on top of it. Josh and Shelley had such a calm, collected, friendly approach and were amazing at getting larger groups of guests to pose, position...etc with time to spare. Since our wedding was in another state, we hired them for the event, and covered housing and traveling costs which I felt was more than fair for the memories we received in turn. Also, these two have a very natural eye for framing and are avid outdoor nature enthusiasts, which offered a very beautiful perspective. I cannot recommend these guys highly enough!! So, so pleased with the final product -- they were hands down the best choice we made in preparation for the big day. :)
