Delicious Wedding Food at the Atrium at Meadowlark

Great Blue Heron did a fabulous job at our Meadowlark wedding! The food, drinks, and service were all amazing - as was the catering team. We worked with Brianna at our venue's walk-through meeting and she was incredibly helpful, especially with regard to determining the number of rental items needed based on final headcount. On the day of the wedding, everything went smoothly and the food was delicious.

Amazing quality!

We had to use GBH since we were getting married at at venue that required them HOWEVER we were so happy with their services we would’ve chosen them anyways. So many of our guest told us the food was so incredible! Absolutely would recommend

Delicious food and great service

We and our guests can’t stop and won’t stop raving about the service and food provided by Great Blue Heron (GBH) catering company. We’ll be honest that we thought GBH would have the usual lackluster or boring type of wedding food, but GBH does not stick to that generalization of wedding food. Everyone was impressed by the quality of food for 250 guests. The taste, flavor, service, and perfection of all the hors d'oeuvres and entrees that came out of the kitchen were unmatched. We decided to go with the filet of beef at an upcharge and the chef did not disappoint. All of our guests said that they came out at the perfect medium rare, as requested. The staff and chef were very flexible and understanding of the allergies and accommodations we requested as well.

Yummy food!

The food was amazing!! Everything was well seasoned and tasted delicious. All our guests loved the food. They catered our wedding at the River View at Occoquan. The food was served in a timely manner and was hot.

Emails was answered in a timely fashion and our questions was answered. They worked well with the rest of the hired vendors.

Exceeded Our Expectations!

Great Blue Heron catering fully exceeded our expectations! You hear stories of other weddings where the tasting was great but the food on the actual day was sub-par. For Great Blue Heron, they knocked it out of the park for both the tasting and reception!

Our guests are still raving about the food and service. We ended up going with braised beef, miso salmon, and bruschetta chicken for our entrees which all turned out phenomenal. All of the appetizers were delicious too. We highly recommend using Great Blue Heron.

NOVA Parks Catering

We used GBH since they are the in-house caterer for all of the NOVA Parks (our reception was at the Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens) and had a wonderful experience. The tasting was easy to schedule and I would say that the food tasted just as good on the day of the wedding as it did during the tasting. They have a fantastic selection to choose from and were super flexible to work with - new covid restrictions were announced the week before our wedding and we were able to change our stationary displays to passed hors d'oeuvres, buffet dinner to plated, and full bar to beer & wine, all with a guest list that was reduced from 65 to 22! The catering staff were polite and considerate and we had no issues come up!

Wonderful wedding experience!

We booked our wedding reception at The Woodlands at Algonkian Park, which is part of the Northern Virginia Park Authority facilities. Great Blue Heron is dedicated caterer. I found this to be convienent since I did not want to research different catering vendors.

Since COVID hit in the middle of planning our October 2020 wedding, the tasting was curbside pick up. Instructions were given on how to reheat the entrees and how to communicate our choices to the catering admin afterwards. Not the same as eating at the venue but we had no choice. All the food we tasted was delicious. We had a hard time choosing! Liz Gearhart answered all my questions about guests with food allergies, special drink requests (like adding hard cider), etc. Very responsive!

On the day of our wedding, the catering staff was accommodating and wonderful. The Catering Captain, DJ, made sure we got to eat during the cocktail hour and we had our meals and drinks refilled at the reception. We got a "to-go" box at the end of the night. Great to have leftovers the next day!

A note about the administrative fee: this is NOT the tips for the wait staff, chef, etc. You should actually give your cash tips in labeled envelopes to your Events Manager prior to the event. The Woodlands gave us a sheet with suggested ranges for tips for each catering team member. Very helpful!

Amazing Food, Amazing Service on our Wedding Day!

e chose GBH because they were our venue's preferred catering, and, to our great delight, we fell in love with the food they made during our tasting session! The chefs are professional and were able to fully customize our menu to include special platters that were meaningful to us. They worked with us on cost without compromising the delicious food, and they made sure everything was to our liking the day of our wedding. The service staff were also excellent, and they were flexible enough to accommodate any guests who were held up due to talking with the bride or groom. They managed the chaos of food service with the utmost professionalism and efficiency, and we are very grateful to have had them on our wedding day. They made sure that we had our own platters ready and waiting for us while we talked with our guests, as well as making sure our glasses were full of whatever we needed at the time. We hope to be able to experience their amazing service again should we have need for a catering company.

Great Food, Amazing Staff

We got married at Woodlands at Algonkian, which contracts with Blue Heron. We repeatedly got compliments about how good the food was. We enjoyed our tasting and because there were so many delicious selections, we had a tough time narrowing down our menu. The catering crew on our wedding day was totally professional and were SUPER attentive to my wife and I the whole evening.

They were so great!

For the cost, we received 2 stationary appetizers, 5 passed appetizers, and 3 amazing meal choices. They also provided bar service & our own signature cocktail. Their catering team was also incredible. We were a little hesitant about using them - when caterers are required by venues they can decline in service and quality with no repercussions - but the catering tasting eased all our worries and made us SO excited for the wedding. We would recommend them to anyone!

Wonderful food and great service!

I loved all the food! I highly recommend the coconut shrimp and raspberry brie phyllo bites (spectacular)! Kelli is an amazing coordinator and so easy to work with! They were flexible and accommodating with dietary needs and special drink requests! I highly recommend them! And the day of staff were great!!

Amazing food!

We got married April 2019 and used them as our caterer. The food, drinks, and service were all amazing! Bianca the catering manager was there the day and night of the wedding to ensure everything went smoothly. We went with the buffet and full bar and our guests raved about it. Would definitely use them again for another event.

Delicious!

Great Blue Heron is the exclusive caterer for the Northern Virginia Parks wedding and event venues. We did the tasting with them at our venue, the Woodlands at Algonkian. They're really experienced and they know what food makes a good event. They also managed the open bar. They are pretty flexible with options and price points. They give a buffet option and a plated option, with several options to cut/add options within those two. We chose plated meals and worked it to $60 per person. All of the staff were wonderful.

One nice perk they offer is that as the bride and groom, we could choose *any* meal we wanted, at no upcharge! Our guests chose between sliced steak, chicken, and salmon, but I had crab cake and my husband had a filet steak.

They also take care of ordering the table cloths and napkins, and set up and clean up at the venue.

Great food and service!

Great Blue Heron was great to work with and the food was SO GOOD. Liz was very receptive and helpful to any changes to the menu and linen order. We particular enjoyed our tasting and everybody enjoyed their dinner at our wedding. Our favorites were actually the appetizers - some of our guests loved the appetizers so much they couldn’t believe they were also getting dinner! The bacon-wrapped dates are to die for. Delicious!

Started at our tasting - which was amazing - their food is truly really good. They were super flexible with how we wanted to do our menu, any dietary restrictions, everything. They were very amicable about pricing, and on the day of the wedding everything went smoothly and was delicious. Everybody loved the food!

Well Worth It

My guests were blown away with the food overall! Both the appetizers and main dish were amazing! I especially liked that the company has a policy where no matter what you serve your guests, the bride and groom can have whatever we wanted (the guests had chicken and beef options with the buffet, we had salmon). Many people came up to us saying how they plan to keep our venue in mind just because they were catered by Great Blue Heron!

Wow! Our food was incredible! I have never seen so many steaks cooked to medium rare perfection at a wedding. We absolutely loved working with Great Blue Heron and the food couldn't have turned out better. Between our cocktail hour reception snacks, delicious main courses, and the flowing bar, I can't decide what my favorite part was. Some hidden perks to working with Great Blue Heron is that the venue coordinator Cori and the catering coordinator Liz work really well together. I can't tell you how relieved we were to be able to easily coordinate with everyone involved. We worked together at the tasting to build our menu, were able to coordinate special meals for a few guests including my husband and my sister, and were able to communicate about day of timeline using a google doc. Our meals were perfectly timed, high quality, and left our guests happy. Thank you, Great Blue Heron!

Everyone complimented the food!

It’s rare that food on a buffet for 150 actually tastes good but GBH made that happen and our guests loved the meal! GBH is Meadowlark’s in-house catering company and if you’re looking at Meadowlark for a vendor, highly recommend GBH! The tasting went on for forever and there are so many options!

amazing taste & nothing was dry!

We booked our wedding venue with River View at Occoquan, which is one of the Nova parks. They partner with Blue Heron so they automatically became our caterer for the wedding and... it was a great experience having them cooking for my wedding!

Everything from the cocktail food to the actual dinner was AMAZINGGGGG!! We did buffet and the food was very much not dry and absolutely splendid in taste! All of our guests raved about the salmon and the beef tenderloin. And on point service!!

We had a truly incredible experience working with Liz and her staff! They provided a delicious tasting, answered all of our questions, were able to switch out local beers into our package, supplied our guest with water on a hot summer day and were accommodating is so many ways! They customized a reception dinner menu for us, set up the reception space beautifully. Their pricing CANNOT be beat!! Would highly recommend their support staff, chefs, and day of catering staff!

The food provided by Great Blue Heron Catering was absolutely amazing! We were very fortunate that they are attached to Rust Manor House and NOVA Parks, which is how we found out about them. We had a fantastic experience at the tasting, and the food was just as great at the wedding. Great Blue Heron did a fabulous job at our wedding! We got so many compliments on all of the food and drinks. Everything was delicious. Great Blue Heron has a great staff that made sure we were full and happy. The service was top notch. They took care of set up and clean up, table cloths, and worked closely with the venue to make sure the reception was set up just as requested. Liz was helpful and responsive on the planning end of things. She accommodated our requests for signature drinks and answered all of my questions quickly when planning. Our guests left our wedding full and happy! We are so grateful for a delicious first meal as husband and wife!

Our Caterer ( Great Blue Heron ) is really one of the best one in Northern Virginia . Jason , the catering manager was expert , cooperative and responsive . We have to change the floor plan a few times and he accepted them without any complain . All his staff were great . The quality and quantity of food and services was excellent .

We absolutely loved Great Blue Heron. Liz was fantastic - so responsive, extremely friendly, and helped us get everything together for the reception. The food was EXCELLENT. The tasting was free, which is how it should be. Everything we had was amazing, and that carried through to the wedding day. We got tons of compliments from every single guest we spoke to about how delicious the food was, and how great the bartenders were. My only complaint is that the coffee and tea that we requested to be served, never was. Not sure what happened there, but it's not a deal breaker. We also had the experience most people have at weddings, where full glasses and plates of food were taken by staff before they were done with them. This is also not a deal breaker, but something to note for GBH for the future :)

Overall, we could not have been happier with GBH as our vendor. It's so much easier having in-house catering (we had our wedding at Rust), who also helps to handle linens and other extraneous details. I definitely recommend using GBH for your wedding, or really any other nice event you need a caterer for!

We loved Great Blue Heron! We used them as our wedding was at Rust Manor and they are their preferred caterer. Using them was not only the simpler and cheaper option (as opposed to finding an outside caterer, etc.) they were fantastic. The food was delicious and the staff were phenomenal. It took off so much worry knowing they were so familiar with our venue. We could not have been happier. They took into consideration dietary restrictions as well which was super awesome.

Great Blue Heron were great to work with. Liz was very responsive to the endless questions that arose! Dennis was amazing, and we were able to put together a menu that was special to us! Can't thank him enough for going out of his way to accommodate our requests. On the day of, everything ran smoothly. The staff were amazing, and while the bridal party were taking pictures, they made sure to bring food and drinks outside to make sure we all were fed and watered :) The food was unbelievable. Everyone has raved about how amazing the cocktail hour spread was, and honestly, the only "complaint" I have heard from guests, was that there was too much food!!!! LOL - simply wonderful - I highly recommend Great Blue Heron!! Thank you all for your hard work!!

The food was amazing!! The only thing I noticed was the lighting in the dining hall made it a little difficult for the staff to tell the difference between the purple and black cards (indicating beef or fish) AND people moved their seats at the parents table making GBH’s master copy of the meal choice reversed, which was NO fault to GBH at all. For that I apologize, I didn’t know they were moved until everyone was seated (and still don’t know who moved them). But they worked it out and everyone has complimented on how great the food was. Thank you so very very much! Forgive me for not remembering her name but the woman who was overseeing the dinner/waitstaff was absolutely amazing and I am 100% positive her goal the whole night was to ensure not only was I happy, but everyone at our wedding reception was happy! Again, thank you for being a very critical part of our wedding day and looking back, I wish I had gotten a picture of all the staff together!

GBH was fabulous to work with and their food delicious. The chef is happy to make anything you want and the manager is incredibly responsive. We prioritized food for our wedding and we were not disappointed. Many of our guests commented how delicious and how much food we had available. I think the tasting with them was the best part of wedding planning - so many delicious options to choose from. From a great craft beer selection to fun appetizers to a huge and delicious buffet you can't get a better caterer. Thank you!

We loved Great Blue Heron! Liz was super responsive during the entire planning process and Dennis, the head chef, was amazing during our tasting. They were willing to make some changes and adjust anything to our needs. The food was DELICIOUS! On the wedding day, the server responsible for taking care of my husband and I was so quick to make sure we had everything we need and checked in frequently. They provided drinks/appetizers during cocktail hour while we took pictures, and served us a plated dinner even though we had a buffet. We even got a to go box (it was huge) with a bunch of food at the end of the night. The macaroni and cheese was outstanding, and we got several compliments on our food. Everyone was extremely professional and helpful all night.

We had a great experience using Great Blue Heron as our wedding caterer for our wedding on August 12th, 2017. We wanted to do a brunch wedding reception, and they were able to accommodate our request and vision for that to make it happen. We attended a tasting a few months before the wedding, and they made sure to prepare the food from the brunch menu for us even though the other couples there had the regular dinner menu. Dennis was friendly and helpful to us, and he helped us modify the food and beverage packages to suit our needs. Liz was also a very helpful and responsive point of contact. The pricing for the food/beverages was very reasonable, with the price per person including plates, glassware, silverware, and servers/bartenders.
The food at the wedding was hot, fresh, and delicious! We did a brunch buffet, and they had plenty of everything and never ran out of anything. The caterers prepared small plates of the cheese/crackers and the fruit appetizers that they were serving for cocktail hour and placed them in a separate room for my husband and I immediately after the ceremony so we would have a chance to eat some food in private before going outside again to take photos. They also prepared plated meals for my husband and I so we had food on our table immediately when we sat down for the reception. It was incredibly convenient because we did not have to go through the buffet line with everyone else, because that would have taken much longer and would have not been easy in my big wedding dress! All of the Great Blue Heron staff was very friendly and accommodating throughout the reception.
The food was delicious, and our guests really enjoyed it. Even days after the wedding, we kept hearing from our guests about how much the loved the food. Great Blue Heron and Liz (our contact) were amazing! The food was phenominal and the service was impecable. I had worried that having a plated dinner would cause some guests to recieve their food long after other guests had finished dinner but this was not at all the case. The staff that day were quick to bring out every meal and all of our guests told us that it was some of the best food they have ever had at a wedding.

Liz was great throughout the entire process and helped me every step of the way! I also loved that she dealt with all the linen orders and that I didn't have to worry about it!

Blue Heron was amazing! We were so happy with the catering at our wedding, and Liz and the entire crew were so wonderful to us throughout the big day and the months leading up to it! Our guests LOVED the Mexican buffet they put together for us, and the staff were so wonderful, kind and helpful throughout the evening. We cannot recommend them enough!

Great Blue Heron Catering was, by far, the best catering we found in the DC area. We looked at various caterers, and GBH had the best tasting food, was the most generous with their portions and options, and they had the best prices too. Their food was top-notch (all our guests agreed that it was some of the best food they've ever had at a wedding). The GBH staff also helps throughout the entire reception, and everyone was incredibly flexible, supportive, and professional. They go above and beyond in providing a lot of little things for the couple, including a private snack after the ceremony in the prep room (to include champagne and the signature drink!) and boxed leftovers of food. They were great to work with from start to finish! If you are having an event at NOVA Parks, you should absolutely pick GBH! Thank you to everyone at GBH who made our event at The Atrium at Meadowlark perfect!

AMAZING. DELICIOUS. WONDERFUL. We had our wedding at the Atrium at Meadowlark, & GBH was the in-house caterer. Many of our picky-eater guests mentioned that they loved the delicious food! Also, GBH went above & beyond to make the day run smoothly. Our guests told us afterwards about how friendly & accommodating GBH was during the reception. They weren't just providing great food, they were providing logistical support behind the scenes.

Special GBH people:
Brian - the executive chef. What a friendly & warm guy! During the tasting, he worked with our budget which helped us gain wiggle room. Right before the ceremony, he was super flexible about keeping the ceremony outdoors, even though the weather called for rain. It didn't matter though, he reassured us that the staff would be able to do a full transition within 5 mins & bring us all indoors if need be. We felt like they were all working to make our day wonderful.

Jason - Catering captain. Jason is awesome. He had been responding to my manic emails for 1.5 years, answering all my (somewhat) bridezilla questions, & placating my crazy with quick & thorough answers. We finally met in person & he was hilarious! My (now) husband & I really appreciated his insight, recommendations, & help through the months.

Carson - Catering captain. MVP. She was amazing at coordinating with all the vendors, the DJ for timing, & being the glue to the entire wedding flow & logistics! She was able to make the room look like a whimsical fairy tale - & with just a handful of flowers & several bags of loose petals I gave her. She had zero guidance from me, this was all from her own creativity - & it was gorgeous.

Pricing - we initially planned on using an outside caterer, until we went to GBH's tasting (so delicious!) & saw their package inclusions. All other catering & scenarios just did not compare.

We highly recommend GBH to all future brides and grooms. Thank you, Brian, Jason, and Carson!

We had a great experience working with Great Blue Heron. We initially decided to use them for ease because they were the in-house caterer for our venue, the Atrium at Meadowlark, but their quality and service really won us over. The whole team was really friendly, professional and quick to reply to emails, and they worked with us to craft a menu that met our needs (including our guests' dietary restrictions). We received lots of compliments on the food and the service throughout the evening (especially their bartenders!).

We went with Great Blue Heron largely because they were the in-house caterer at the Atrium at Meadowlark, which made planning much easier. They turned out to be incredible, and we're so happy with all the services they provided. Jason was flexible and accommodating, allowing us to swap in different beers and deal with various dietary restrictions. We got numerous compliments from our guests on the food, especially the cheese board. Everyone loved the bartenders; they were very friendly, and they didn't hold back on the liquor. The servers were friendly and attentive, and they worked very quickly. Finally, GBH helped us coordinate the number and types of linens we needed to rent. GBH was great all around.

I'm so glad we had Great Blue Heron cater our wedding reception! The food is magnificent and the service was absolutely incredible. Ashley, Liz, and Dennis are so professional and easy to work with and catered to our every need (pun intended). We had a somewhat unique situation that required some extra tweaking and attention, and they handled it beautifully. Our event moved so smoothly and we got so many compliments from our guests on the food. What's more, the wait staff was just delightful. I was hesitant to go with an on-site caterer/ venue package deal because I wasn't sure if it was a way for the venue to get extra money, but we actually ended up saving so much because the caterer is on-site. Thank you, Great Blue Heron for making our special day so magical!

SO GLAD we found the Atrium at the Meadowlark and Great Blue Heron catering! Amazing and professional team that works with you to give you exactly what you're looking for on your wedding. Brian and his staff were amazing. The food was absolutely delicious. The only hard part of the experience was deciding which dishes to serve, since everything was fantastic. We booked Great Blue Heron through our venue, The Woodlands at Algonkian. We couldn't be happier with the quality of food and drink we received. We had a plated dinner (choices of beef, chicken, salmon and a vegetarian option) and an open bar. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They made sure my husband and I had everything we needed from food to drinks all night. I was extremely pleased with everything about Great Blue Heron. From the very beginning, they were responsive, on top of every detail, and very clear about everything that I should expect. They were personable and when I struggled to find an option that would meet my budget, the owner of the company called me personally to work through an option that would work. He was very willing and flexible to create an option that met my needs and that meant SO much. The food was excellent - you always hear of wedding food only being sub-par but I have had more than one guest since then specifically comment on how good our food was, without me prompting them. The team was experienced and knew exactly where to go and what to do. Their quality of food, and service, was overall a solid 5/5. I am so glad I chose them and am now recommending them to all of my current engaged friends!

Dennis was amazing and patient (even with some slightly obnoxious family members in the mix). We are still getting compliments on the food from the wedding! Everything about the catering was perfect - food, portion size, presentation - nothing could have gone better. Also, as a bride with a severe food allergy, I was not expecting to have a lot of choice in the wedding meal - I was wrong. Dennis was extremely knowledgeable about contamination issues in the kitchen and made me comfortable at every point in the process. Instead of having one stripped down meal option - I had lists of food to choose from and a staff that knew about separation in the kitchen. There was nothing about my meal that felt like I was settling for whatever they had or the best I could get. If anything - I was absolutely spoiled. The staff was amazing - polite and attentive and just plain wonderful. I'd recommend them for any event possible as they genuinely care about your experience.

Everything from tasting to passed apps and dinner service on the wedding day was spot on and so delicious! Our guests were so happy and full, we heard several times that the food was so good, they didn't want to keep eating but they did! They give you so much bang for your buck. We didn't hear a single complaint about the food, service, or staff. They even helped us out when our officiant didn't show and they didn't have to. We appreciate the way they went above and beyond. GBH catered our wedding at The Atrium at Meadowlark and they were wonderful! Very professional and responsive to our requests. We were not local but they still planned with us from abroad in a quick and timely manner. When we said we were interested in working with them they arranged a full tasting and when we had a menu change to something we never tried before, they even setup a small tasting of that new item as well! The food was all delicious- we had a guest who needed a special non-menu dinner the night of the wedding and the catering team was not only willing to work with the last minute adjustment but was very understanding as well. Service throughout the night was great and the team was very attentive to our guests. It may cost a pretty penny but worth every cent!

We got married at The Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and Great Blue Heron was their in-house caterer. We loved working with them! The head chef was very attentive and made sure myself and my husband had everything we needed as soon as the ceremony ended! He personally but came and checked on us after the ceremony to see if we and the wedding party needed anything else before we headed out to take pictures.

The food was amazing!! Anyone we talked to afterwards said the food was really really good. We were able to mix up some of the items and customize the menu- for example - they have a miso glazed salmon with kimchi on the side. We really liked the sea bass but wanted to miso glaze/kimchi, so they made it for us! Great Blue Heron was very attentive and really great to work with, I definitely recommend using them!!

Brian and his team at Great Blue Heron were wonderful. The food was to die for! Two of our guests happened to be trained chefs and even they were impressed with the food. It was perfect. Brian is a character and likes to joke around during tastings but was all business at our reception. I (groom) am gluten intolerant and he was all over it. He even personally arranged and delivered a tray of appetizers to us before we went out into the gardens for portraits.

The Chef Brian does amazing work as evident of the vast compliments I got from my picky family members. I am not exaggerating when I say picky in particular my Aunt. But the day of, she even complimented me and that she made a mistake. Thank you Brian, you don’t know what that mean to me! I definitely would recommend the Petit Filets of Beef and Szechuan Sea Bass as entrees. Guests kept going back for those entrees until it was all gone. GBH also does two signature drinks. We requested signature drinks in our wedding colors; it was such an unexpected nice touch! The wait staff was also polite and did a great job serving my guests for my early May 2015 wedding.

We got married at the Atrium this winter and had an amazing experience with GBH, which is the in-house caterer. The tasting was great - they were very easy about the number of people who could join and help make decisions. And the food was awesome! They helped us decide what foods would work well (looks, moisture, taste, presentation, etc) on the buffet. And we loved the appetizers so much that we decided to go heavy on the apps and displays, and only have 2 main buffet options and they were completely easy to work with to make sure we had enough (more than enough) food to make everyone happy. Brian, the main chef, even made us a take home vat of kimchi, which was one of my favorite moments of food at the tasting.

On the big day, my new husband and I decided we wanted to sit in the limo on our own before the reception entrance. Brian plated apps for us and brought them out (in the rain) to us. They were great! And while we kept getting up and running around, Brian kept our plated (with a buffet, they plate for the bride and groom) food warm and watched until we were sitting and brought it out. I was dancing all night and Christian, the catering chief, made sure there was a glass of water near me at all times. We also had some non-drinkers and guests told me that the waitstaff was really diligent about coming around with the non-alcoholic bubbles we ordered. The bar was also great - really organized, never a line. We had chosen a pretty broad selection of wines and specialty drinks and the staff had it covered. I heard the next day that one of the bottles of wine I had requested for myself had broken during prep and someone was out hunting for the same bottle right before the reception. I think that's pretty amazing.

My day of coordinator said working with the staff was fantastic and they "treated the wedding like one of their relatives was getting married." Direct quote. That's how I felt too. Oh, and they set up my DIY centerpieces!

All of our questions were answered at our tasting and they even helped us with planning our linen rental needs for the day. We ended up with 8-9 inches of very heavy snow on our wedding day, but everyone made the day a success. All of our guests were commenting on how great everything tasted. Dennis and Liz were great!

Brian gave us the wedding of our dreams! This CIA trained chef is very talented and personable guy. The food was delicious, the presentation was gorgeous, and the staff was attentive. We couldn't have asked for more from Blue Heron. Brian went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and full. Christian was our Catering Captain and he was wonderful. He always made sure that we had a full drink and had something to eat. Kristin was patient with our numerous emails. She gave us clear instructions and calmed us down when we were nervous.

We can't say enough about this vendor. We are so blessed to have found Great Blue Heron!

Great Blue Heron is the in-house caterer for our venue, the Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, so we already provided much of our review there. Delicious and bountiful food combined with talented, friendly, and dedicated staff (including Chef Bryan, Kristin, Christian, and the day-of servers) made our reception sparkle. All of guests raved about both the food and the friendly service. In the months and weeks leading up to the event, GBH staff was responsive, professional, flexible, and friendly with us.

Everything with Great Blue Heron was perfect. We were really impressed when we did our tasting and are so glad we went with them. They are the main caterer for our venue (Woodlands at Algonkian) and it made things really simple. They were very responsive and worked within our budget to provide great food. We received so many compliments at the reception on the food and the service. They were very flexible with drink options and did substitutions on the wine and beer for us without question. They also did the set up and maintenance of our s'more bar for us as well. Additionally, they served as the day of coordinator and were really on top of things. One of our vendors was running a little late, and they took care of that for us so we didn't have to worry. It was perfect and we could not have asked for better service.

We loved Great Blue Heron. Our wedding was at the Atrium at Meadowlark, and if you use GBH, you get a discount, so we went into the tasting really hoping it would be good. The food at the tasting was delicious, and the chef, Brian, came out and spoke with us personally about the dishes.
GBH gave us a great deal for both food and bar. Of course, you always worry that food won't hold up to such massive group cooking, but GBH was perfect. So many guests said it was some of the best wedding food they'd ever had.
GBH arranged to have appetizers waiting for us in a private room after the ceremony, which was nice so we could make sure to get a bite to eat. They also offered up an option for us to have a "to go" box, which we definitely took them up on. They actually gave us two large roasting pans worth of food! My only regret with leaving the next day for the honeymoon is that our family got to enjoy the leftovers and we couldn't.
Brian happily accommodated all of our special requests. We even had two "last minute" vegans, and that was no problem at all. He confirmed the menu at the rehearsal and made sure to check in before leaving after dinner at the wedding.
If I could hire Brian to come cook dinner for me every night, I would!

We had countless guests report that the food they enjoyed at our wedding was the best they had at a wedding - ever. My sister contacted them directly due to a soy allergy concern - to which she received a very quick and professional reply from the caterer stating that a separate meal would be made available to her on the day of our wedding (this was done without additional cost, or effort from us) which made the entire experience like a family dinner. If you have a specific meal in mind they provide delicious food - if you're looking for a nice family meal the lead caterer will make outstanding suggestions to accommodate for your desires!

AMAZING!!!!!! The food, drinks and service were outstanding. I have received so many good words from guests about the food - it was the best food they have ever had at a wedding! Liz was so great to work with over the year planning my wedding. She was so quick to answer my gazillion questions and even helped me with other aspects of the wedding. Highly, highly recommend using GBH.

We got married at Meadowlark Botanical Garden in Vienna and Blue Heron Catering was the in-house caterer! My family is from NY and if you have ever been to a NY wedding you know that the cocktail hour is ridiculous and people are usually full after it. I was really concerned that the food wouldn't be enough for our guests so we went with buffet style dinner and regular cocktail hour. All of our guest raved about the food quality! There was plenty of food and our guests seemed very happy with the selections we made. The catering department was very understanding of our budget and helped us to make the right choices and get the best bang for our buck! I also want to call out Chef Brian at Meadowlark. He was AMAZING... for the tasting he sat with us and talked about our food choices. When we went to pick our linens he came in and offered us a taste of something new he was trying out and at our final walk through I mentioned that I really wanted cannoli at the wedding but was having trouble finding a place to get them and BAM... Brian said he would take care of it, and he did. We had a really great experience with them and there are so many perks to choosing the in-house caterer for the wedding (signature drinks, table wine service, reduced cost)

We loved working with Great Blue Heron for our wedding at Rust Manor. We were blown away by our tasting (we even had delicious leftovers for a week!) The food on the day of did not disappoint. We chose the buffet option and guests were all raving about the food. It was easy to pick different options and you really can't go wrong--it was hard to pick just 5 appetizers! On top of that, the buffet line moved quickly and it helped us keep on our timeline. They did a great job setting up our tables and folding our napkins and were very responsive to the wedding party's needs on the day of the wedding. We also loved how a signature drink and table side wine/champagne were included in the standard beverage package. What a great value! Our bartender did a great job serving guests and there were no lines or lags in service. Lastly, Liz at GBH was great to work of and we appreciated her responsiveness and flexibility. I would recommend them to any couple!

These guys were great. Because Meadowlark Gardens (my venue) is technically park land, I had to use Great Blue Heron for alcohol as they are the only ones licensed to serve in a park. However, I had heard good things about the food served by them at other events, so I decided to use them for the food, too. I came into the first tasting having already emailed back and forth with Liz about the menu I had planned and, with one minor exception (which they tweaked to my satisfaction), the chefs nailed it. The food, from the appetizers to the salad to the entrees, were amazing. And everything was EXTREMELY reasonable. My menu wasn't too fancy, but I was still surprised with how reasonable they were about the price per person. One caveat: the wine list was a little limited; however, they allowed my then-fiancee and I to bring in some wine and booze that they couldn't get through their vendors (ask nicely!). Overall, I was impressed by the quality and value of our meal!

My wedding was 2 days ago and I think my guests are still stuffed and happy:). Working with Blue Heron is a great experience, not just for the very high quality food, but for the amazing chefs and staff. From our first meeting with Blue Heron, we felt comfortable that we were in good hands. They are professionals who clearly cater a lot of events, and their experience shows. They are an excellent value--we feel that we more than got our money's worth. The food at our wedding reception was fantastic and plentiful. And our bartenders were the best! If I were starting to plan my wedding today, I would choose Blue Heron all over again.

Omg.. YUM! Let's just say that I booked my venue based mainly on where GBH worked (the only serve the northern VA parks (NVRPA)). Everything was so delicious and wonderful. They did my brother's wedding a couple years back and they were consistently excellent for my wedding. They also packed up what was left so that the next day we didnt have to cook which was great! You won't be disappointed!

ps. The mushroom ravioli was amazing!

I had my wedding at the Atrium and the catering staff was such a joy to work with. Professional, friendly, accommodating. I would definitely recommend using them if you are having your wedding there. We got a lot of perks for doing so that made for an extra special event. They food was also excellent- my guests raved about the beef entree!

GBH is the in-house caterer for the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna VA. You don't have to use GBH, but I honestly don't understand why anyone would hire an outside caterer. I met with Liz and Dennis who worked with my budget to get us the best value for the money. My daughter and her then fiance went to a food tasting and had a hard time narrowing their choices. I did not get to taste everything during the reception, but at a family brunch the next morning, I found out what a mistake that must have been! We chose a buffet, which was marvelous and elegant that was preceded by a cocktail hour with hot and hold appetizers, both passed and as a static display. They set up both an outdoor and indoor bar, with no waiting and very personable wait staff. I would not hesitate to recommend GBH.

We could not offer higher praise for the Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. The location is beautiful, the food exceptional, and the service without peer. The main chef, trained at the Culinary Institute of America, has created diverse and satisfying menu that caters to nearly any type of wedding. Every dish was scrumptious. Our guests could not get enough of the hor d'oeuvres and raved about the meals even days later.
What truly sets the Atrium apart, however, is the service. Wayne Hager, the director, and Renee Arellano, the events coordinator, do an incredible job preparing for your big day and ensuring that you have the wedding you always hoped for. This competence is mixed with a sincere desire to make your big day as special as possible without racking up the prices. This goal is rare in the wedding industry, which is often known to use the emotionally-charged special day as a means to exact the highest expense from its customers.
Unlike many of its competitors, the Atrium’s continual efforts to provide the best service for its clients are not tied to additional fees. For instance, a few weeks before our wedding my wife and I visited Rene at the Atrium for a pre-wedding consultation. During the meeting, we mentioned that one of the centerpieces on the table (a clear vase with some ornaments) was beautiful and asked where we could buy them for our own wedding. Rene replied that she knew where to buy them and that she would purchase them for us to use at the wedding free of charge. This focus on service rather than cost was demonstrated time and again. Bianca, for instance, not only supervised the staff on our big day but also essentially acted as a same-day wedding coordinator, making sure that everything went smoothly.
If you want a beautiful outdoor wedding or a wonderful indoor wedding with an outdoor wedding feel, the Atrium cannot be beat.

Our weddng was amazing and the food was a hit with all of the guests. From the very beginning the staff were there to please us and to make this a pleasant and memorable day for us. The food was so good! Since my wedding was at the Atrium at Meadowlark it was super convenient to be able to use an in house caterer and they blew me away with how professional and (most importantly) delicious their food and service was!

WONDERFUL!! Food was amazing and service was even better. We met with Denis and Brian for our tasting and then once again a week before the wedding to go over all the final details. They were extremely responsive and made us feel comfortable. At first I was completely against a buffet style dinner, but after tasting their food it made me comfortable with my decision. We had a lower budget and they worked with us to stay within our budget and create a wonderful spread of appetizers and dinner selection. I would HIGHLY reccomend them!

Everything was delicious and the caterer was flexible. Some of our guests were vegan and the chef prepared special meals just for them. Those guests said they were impressed by the meals he made. I cannot say enough good things about Great Blue Heron Catering. Start to finish, they were a dream. As far as vendors go, they were highly responsive and extremely flexible on every single detail, right down to the types of flower garnishes on the plates!!! They worked with us right up until days before the event to adjust the guest count and finalize the meal choices. Not only that, but we are still receiving compliments on the food many months later....the hors'doevres were simply outstanding and every meal selection was prepared to perfection by the chef! We received highly personalized service, outstanding value, and I would highly recommend Great Blue Heron Catering to anyone planning to cater an event.

Everyone at Great Blue Heron did a wonderful job! They were all very easy to work with and even got all the special requests and dietary restrictions right! The food was delicious! I still have people talking about how good it was weeks after the wedding. I would suggest them to anyone!

If you are using a venue where Great Blue Heron can cater, then you should definitely book them. We could not have been happier! The food was perfect and all of our guests loved it, the staff was so friendly and efficient and the guy in charge, Dennis, was very accommodating and friendly!

We chose Blue Heron Catering, the in-house caterer at the Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, for our wedding reception. We were so glad we did! We received multiple compliments from our family and guests on how good the food was! Even a month after the wedding I am still hearing about how impressed guests were with the food. We had a buffet style dinner and the presentation was wonderful. They provided my husband and me with our own personal waiter, Sean, who was very helpful attending to us all night; he brought us our dinner and made sure we had drinks if we needed them. The funny thing is that I never even made it to the back area where the buffet table, coffee station and bar were because of the impeccable service we received. I just know from the wedding pictures that it looked very nice.

They also provided excellent h'ors d'oeuvres during the cocktail hour that we received compliments on as well. I would definitely recommend Blue Heron Catering - their food is delicious and they are very professional, friendly, and efficient. At one point in the evening my mother wanted candle votives added to the guest tables and they were happy to do it. Overall they provided us with a great experience that truly added to the elegance of our event. We found them to be responsive and flexible with us in the planning stages as well.

Absolutely Amazing!!

Scott Boger and GBH are the catering service at the Meadowlark Atrium (see separate review for venue).

Scott and his staff are amazing. They helped us create a menu that suited our event perfectly. All of our guests are still commenting on how fantastic the food was that night (and who ever remembers the food at a wedding?).

We had a handful of specific requests-- including a peach cobbler instead of a groom's cake-- which the chef executed to perfection.

The staff is super responsive (again see venue review) and the catering costs was extremely reasonable. Unless you want something super-specific in terms of flatware, glassware or chairs, the Atrium and GBH have everything you need- just rent the linens you want (and Scott will even help arrange that!) and your event will be gorgeous!

We would recommend Scott, GBH, and the Atrium to anyone planning a special event, especially to any couple who wants a fantastic wedding. If you don't want to have to stress over the details-- this is the way to go. Choose the Atrium and GBH and you can be confident in knowing that Scott and the whole staff will bend over backwards to make your special day beautiful, classy, elegant, fun, and stress-free.

We simply couldn't be happier than with the quality and service that we received. We almost wish we could do it all again just to work with Scott and to plan another great event at the Atrium!

I'm so happy we got to eat the food at our tasting, because they really don't lie when they say you don't eat anything on your wedding day. Dispite that they were awesome. We're still hearing about how good the food and drinks were! They pulled some food from the cocktail hour aside for us, but my husband ate it all before I even had a chance lol. Truly awesome.

Keep in mind though that the tip is not included in the 15% service fee... they do give you a form for tipping, but it was just an extra cost we weren't expecting. Also our catering captain changed like 5 times. They were all great, but it was a little unnerving having them switch so often.

From start to finish, Great Blue Heron Catering exceeded our expectations. They were so easy to communicate with, and very supportive on our wedding day. The packages that GBH offer are thoughtful, budget-conscious, and all-encompassing. We chose to go buffet style with a full open bar. This also included 6 appetizers (2 plated, 4 passed) and 2 signature drinks. Everything was cooked perfectly, put out on time, and our guests loved it! As soon as the ceremony finished, the staff were waiting with drinks for the bridal party, and one server tracked the bride down and made sure she got a few of every appetizer.Just as impressive were the catering staff who were attentive to our needs, and quickly tidied up behind our guests. They even beat back stormwater from our reception tent when it began to thunderstorm during dinner. We’re so thankful to the whole Great Blue Heron Catering team!

We got married at the Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. Leading up to the wedding, we largely worked with Jason Allen, who was awesome. The tasting was great - so great we had a hard time deciding what to pick because it was all so delicious! We did the full bar package, and we made a lot of substitutions to the beer and wine list; Jason took it all in stride. The food was delicious. We did a buffet with plated salads, and it worked perfectly. They handled all dietary allergies/restrictions without a hitch. They handled the table linens for us. We would happily use them again for a catering function. Thanks to all, especially Jason!

We were very pleased with Great Blue Heron catering and would absolutely hire them again for another event! From the tasting to the reception itself, the staff at GBH made our wedding meal experience flawless. At the tasting, we were very impressed with the experience and GBH's flexibility when we wanted to alter parts of the menu. It was a great value to go through GBH Catering through our wedding venue and the price was worth every penny (and more!). On the day of our wedding, when I'm sure the Chef had a million other things to worry about, he wanted to make sure he got everything right and we were happy, personally checking on us and ensuring our food and drinks were satisfactory. All of our guests were very impressed with their meals - both portion size and taste! We don't have enough great things to say about Great Blue Heron Catering!!

Great Blue Heron provides delicious food, great service, and a lot of choice and adaptations to the menu (gluten free, vegetarian options for guests). They really worked with us to to make sure that we got exactly what we wanted for our wedding day- even taking into account budget limitations. Very happy we chose to work with GBH for our wedding day- many guests commented that our food was delicious and the service was great!

GBH is the preferred vendor for Rust Manor house, and because of VABC rules the only bar provider you can have. Ordinarily I'd balk at being forced into that kind of lock-in, but GBH did an absolutely fantastic job. They have a wide variety on the dishes they are able to prepare and were happy to work with us on some custom arrangements. They also provided solid advice on food and side pairings.

On the day of the food was excellent and we received numerous compliments on the beef tenderloin and several of the side dishes. Our beer snob friends were pleased to see the selection of Devil's Backbone brews all were thrilled with the bar service. A special hat tip to the catering captain who made sure my wife and I got a hold of drink and some appetizers right after the ceremony.
