Scottish Wedding under October Skies
We were married in October 2016 at Colonial Gardens and rented the entire B&B for the weekend. Our experience was perfect. Karen and her husband are amazing. Everything from the rooms, flowers, catering, landscaping, set-up, staffing, music, photography, bagpipes, musicians and more were gorgeous, organized and stress free. We will always cherish our intimate October Garden wedding and can’t recommend Colonial Gardens enough! -

Gorgeous wedding
We actually did a true elopement package here and it was absolutely beautiful. I did not have to do anything other than walk down the aisle. They literally did everything and I could not recommend this place more. We are planning to renew our vows here within the future. This is definitely the place to have your wedding or just to stay in their beautiful rooms! -

I will always recommend Colonial Gardens Bed and Breakfast.... We were lucky enough to be able to renew our vows in this gorgeous Garden... Beth was an awesome host... Everything was perfect.... they handed everything...right down to the perfect bouquet of sunflower... very attentive with lots of attention to detail... awesome service... quaint and personal... our renewal was intimate... just my husband myself and our children... -

Our perfect wedding!!
We were married there two years ago and our friends and family still refer to it as the best wedding they’ve ever attended. I was overwhelmed at the daunting experience of planning a wedding, so Karen, the proprietor graciously offered to help. Help is an understatement as she guided me through its entirety. From dinner to a cake, bartender to officiator, hair and makeup to photographer, she handled everything. The day before the wedding we found out that rain was in the forecast, so Karen and her wonderful husband Ron, organized a tent to be rented, and Ron personally strung magical lights within it (thankfully the rain never came). She took a stressful situation and made it relaxing and perfect. I literally could not have planned it without her. We also rented out the B&B for the weekend and that in and of itself was a perfect experience. I can’t recommend Colonial Gardens Bed & Breakfast in Williamsburg, VA enough. If I could give it 10 stars I would, as it is worth that and more!!! -

We spent a long time picking the best place to get married in Williamsburg. We chose Colonial Gardens Bed & Breakfast and we are glad we did! The property is beautiful and the staff is amazing! We had a wonderful day with are loved ones! -

When we decided to have a private ceremony, there were a variety of choices. We were referred by friends who had spent the weekend at Colonial Gardens. This was the best choice ever!!! We had to change the date at the last minute...no problem!!! Talk about no stress!!! All we had to do was show up! The flowers, officiant, pictures, cake, even reservations for dinner were already done for us. It was all for us, no one else. The next morning, our pictures were on display through the laptop as we ate our wonderful breakfast. Now that we are back in the area, we go back for our anniversary every year. Maybe a vow renewal in the future!!! (Our pic is on their site ❤️) -

The overall experience fell far below what was promised and what any client should reasonably expect—especially for an event as important as a wedding.
To begin, when we booked the venue, we were explicitly assured that the yard would feature an abundance of fresh flowers at the time of the wedding. This was a major reason we selected your location, especially since the wedding was originally planned to be held outdoors. On the day of the event, however, there were no fresh flowers anywhere on the property. The only flowers present were old, faded artificial arrangements that were wholly inappropriate for a wedding. Had we not brought our own fresh flowers, the ceremony would have consisted only of our daughter’s bouquet and the groom’s boutonniere. This was a clear failure to provide what was promised.
Furthermore, the payment process was both unexpected and concerning. Our daughter—who was inexperienced with booking venues—was charged the full amount upfront. Standard practice in this industry is to collect a deposit at the time of booking and the remaining balance closer to the event date. By collecting the full payment immediately without properly explaining this deviation from standard procedure, her inexperience was taken advantage of. This should never occur in a professional business.
In addition to these major issues, several other problems demonstrated a lack of preparation and professionalism:
• Mosquitoes: At no point were we warned about the significant mosquito activity on the property. Immediately upon stepping outside, many guests—including the bride—were bitten repeatedly. Proper notice would have allowed us to prepare. Combined with the absence of the promised flowers, this gave the impression that the conditions and services were misrepresented.
• Unprofessional appearance during setup: Multiple guests observed Angela walking around without shoes during wedding preparations. This is unprofessional and inappropriate during the setup of a formal event.
• Interference with decorations and furniture: Although the Bride and groom were told that they could adjust furniture and décor as needed, their changes were repeatedly undone. One of the flower vases placed near our welcome sign was moved after they positioned it. Additionally, the zebra-print stool—which had been removed because it clashed with the wedding aesthetic—was repeatedly placed back where it had been moved from. The groom had to relocate it several times. This was disruptive and dismissed our clearly stated preferences.
• Music and sound system failures: When the bride was ready to walk down the aisle, the sound system was not connected and Angela had to leave to adjust it at the exact moment it was needed. This completely avoidable delay demonstrated a lack of basic preparation.
• Wedding cake quality: The wedding cake lacked even minimal decorative detail. It appeared uneven, plain, and already slightly melted when put out. While we did not expect an elaborate design, we did expect a clean, polished, professional presentation. This fell well short of acceptable.
• Room key issue at the B&B: After the reception, the Bride and Groom returned to the room only to find themselves locked out because they had never been provided a key. They had to wait approximately ten minutes for Angela to arrive. When informed that no key had been given, Angela appeared incredulous rather than concerned, and they still never received a key. This is a basic oversight that should not occur.
The Bride and Groom did want to acknowledge that the B&B stay itself overall was pleasant. The room was clean, comfortable, and the breakfasts were good. Had their experience been limited to the B&B, they likely would have been satisfied. However, the wedding services provided were significantly below acceptable standards and did not resemble what was promised or paid for.
Based on this experience, we would not recommend Colonial Gardens as a wedding or special event venue to any of our friends or family.
These issues collectively demonstrate a lack of preparedness, professionalism, and reliable communication. We expect that you will take this feedback seriously, review your practices, and make the necessary improvements to ensure future clients receive the level of service and honesty they deserve.
