Cake was wonderful
So my husband and I got married on September 21, 2013. Jan was wonderful and our cake was everything we wanted. There was barely any left for us to take home. As I'm leaving this review I am hoping to get in touch with Jan to order a cake for our anniversary. ❤️ -

We ordered a beautiful three tier cake from Appletree, and it was fantastic. It was beautifully designed, and we were told by several people at the wedding it was the best wedding cake they'd ever tasted.
Jan was easy to work with, and the cake tasting was very fun! An overall great experience! -

We tried many cakes and Jan's was by far the BEST wedding cake we tried! She had so many interesting flavors, it made it hard to choose. So we chose three, one for each tier of our wedding cake! We really wish we had more leftover cake. -

I came across AppleTree Cake Co on weddingwire.com 2 weeks before my wedding when my previous baker informed me that she would no longer be able to provide our wedding cake. While I was reluctant to consider another baker who works from home, I could not have made a better selection than Jan of AppleTree Cake Co! Jan exuded professionalism She responded to my email inquiry immediately and scheduled a time to chat about my cake design and event details the next day. During our phone consultation she gave me a quote and explained her pricing to help clarify where I could cut costs if need be. Despite my shortened timeframe Jan did not pressure me to make a decision right away; I considered her proposal over the weekend checked out other bakers over the weekend. When I reached out to her on Monday morning to set up a tasting Jan was able to meet me that same evening with a sample cake for my fiancé and I to taste at home. Talk about promt and professional! Needless to say the sample cake was delicious and we decided to hire Jan. Her online contract and electronic payment system was easy to use and hassle free. Jan was already familiar with our venue and coordinated a timely and smooth cake delivery. Our wedding cake was beautiful and delicious and I couldn't have made a better choice. If you want a professional, talented, fairly-priced baker look no further! Save yourself any additional trouble and book AppleTree, you will not regret it! -

Jan was amazing and my wedding cake was delicious and beautiful. Since the beginning she was professional, warm, inviting and funny! I enjoyed every part of the experience she made the process painless. She was clear, her contracts are fair and clear and her presentations lefts me smiling from the cake tasting to when I first walked in with my husband and saw it sparkling with my "M" cake topper. Thank you Jan for being one of the best choices of my wedding day. I shall return! For another occasion of course. lol -

Jan was incredibly accommodating, helpful, and the overall product was delicious and looked beautiful. From the start Jan was flexible in scheduling a tasting, and provided far more tasting options than other vendors in the Richmond area. Also, Jan went above and beyond to contact our venue and florist concerning cake stands, type of table the cake would be on, and how the flowers would be placed. Additionally, when I asked Jan her opinion on options, she was very honest in her response, and twice her honesty meant less money for her. So without a doubt...she is truly there to accommodate the couple not her pocket. Finally, and most importantly, Appletree is the BEST price in the Richmond area and by far the BEST tasting. Some of the other places we tried were pricier but the taste / quality did not match the price. Wedding planning can be so stressful, but Jan was one vendor that we truly enjoyed working with and would recommend her every time! Thanks so much AppleTree Cake Co!! -

My husband and I were lucky enough to win a vow renewal at Fairview Farm in Powhatan, VA. Part of the winning package was a cake by Appletree Cake Co. When we went to our tasting, it was so hard to narrow down our selection. Everything was delicious!! We ended up choosing a pumpkin flavored cake with buttercream frosting, which we felt was perfect for our Oct. ceremony. I wanted the look of a "naked" cake and boy did Jan deliver! We got so many compliments on not just the taste but also the look. My vision was fully met and we couldn't be happier with how the cake turned out! Jan was extremely professional and nice and never once treated us any different than she would a paying customer. The fact that she donated her services for our vow renewal ceremony says a lot about her and her company. We highly recommend her and we for sure will be returning customers! -

I could not be happier with Appletree, who provided cupcakes and a small wedding cake for our big day. We knew after the initial tasting that we scored a superb vendor. The cake and frosting options are plentiful, though not overwhelming, and it was great that we could mix-and-match options. Think pumpkin spice cupcakes with cinnamon frosting for a late October wedding. Our guests were also blown away by the chai tea cupcakes, among the four or five other options we had. Also, the prices are not over-the-top. We seriously have zero regrets choosing Appletree, and anyone getting married in the Richmond/Powhatan area should seriously consider this vendor! -

We decided to go with cupcakes for our wedding and a small cutting cake and they were perfect!!! Our guests loved the cupcakes and they were so delicious. The cutting cake was perfect for us to be able to cut and keep the rest for our 1 year anniversary. The icing on the cupcakes even matched with our colors. We also needed a few of the cupcakes to be gluten free and they turned out amazing. They were awesome! -

I could not be happier with the beautiful and delicious cake the Appletree Cake Co LLC made for my daughter's wedding last weekend! Jan Butterfield was wonderful to work with. She was so kind and accommodating while working with me through the entire selection process. Because my daughter was attending college out of state, I had the deliciously daunting task of selecting the cake without her assistance. I knew her vision was for a semi-naked cake with lots of flavor, but I was nervous about making a choice she and her groom would both like. Jan provided a wide variety of flavors and fillings to mix and match during the initial tasting. (She was also kind enough to provide me with a second box of samples, when I started to doubt my choice just weeks before the wedding!) Another area she proved knowledgeable in, was helping me select the correct number of tiers to give the cake the proper height to make sure it was aesthetically pleasing to the eye. My daughter and I both couldn't have been more pleased the end results! Jan delivered a beautiful semi-naked cake with salted caramel cream cheese filling! It was the perfect color, and looked beautiful in the rustic venue setting with fresh flowers on all the tiers. I had so many guests comment on how moist and delicious it was! Appletree Cake Co really "takes the cake" in delivering excellent customer service, along with a beautiful and delicious quality product! I highly recommend their services! -

My wedding cake was beautiful and DELICIOUS!!!! I approached Jan with a photo of a cake that I liked and she worked with me to tweak it and figure out a design that would work including adding fresh flowers and accommodating my cake topper. She worked with my budget and truly created the cake of my dreams! The cake tasting was yummy of course and Jan was a dream to work with - so nice and reassuring. No complaints whatsoever!! I already can't wait to order my anniversary cake because I have to admit I didn't get my share on my wedding night!!! Thanks again Jan!!!!!! -

Apple tree was very professional. We enjoyed the cake, very tasty and delicious. Loved all three layers being different flavored. Bottom was vanilla, middle strawberry and our favorite was the top which was a spiced cake with cinnamon cream cheese filling. I really appreciated Jan's customer service, she really was genuine about helping us have the perfect wedding cake! She even recommended other vendors we needed. Our cake was phenomenal. Our cake was so beautiful! When we met with Jan, I had a picture of a cake I had found on pinterest that I was in love with and wanted to replicate. Jan was able to make my dream cake come true, when other bakeries had told us that they could not do it. And not only was our cake beautiful... it was DELICIOUS!!! Everyone at the wedding loved the cake, even friends who usually don't like cake and don't eat cake, were eating it and loving it! I will definitely be using Appletree Cake Co for other occasions. It was the best cake I have ever had! The only negative part of our experience was having to narrow our flavor choices down to 3 flavors, for our 3 layer cake. Every flavor she had for us to taste was delicious. -

We used Appletree Cake Company for my daughter's Bat Mitzvah cake. It turned out beautifully. We provided Jan with a couple of pictures and we could not have been happier with the taste or the look of the cake. The guests were all in awe of the cake.

Jan (owner) and her creations are absolutely fantastic! Meeting with Jan for a tasting was such a treat. She was so welcoming and open to suggestions. She really aims to understand your vision, and if you don’t have one, asks questions to guide you in the right direction. She offered many cake and filling flavors, so my now-husband and I had a very hard time choosing our wedding cake flavor combinations. All of her cakes are moist and flavorful. Flavors include more “classic” ones such as vanilla (but she does hers with sour cream, which is amazing) and milk chocolate, but also ones like chai tea and lemon coconut. Her fillings are so good that I could eat them by the spoonful (and I did—raspberry cream and lemon curd, hellooo?).
We ended up choosing three tiers with sour cream vanilla cake throughout, raspberry cream filling for the top and bottom, chocolate mousse buttercream for the middle. The sour cream vanilla cake is moist and fluffy, perfectly sweet, with great vanilla flavor. I think it also has just a touch of almond extract, which, unexpectedly to some, sends it over the top to vanilla cake heaven. Beyond any of your boxed cake mix dreams. The raspberry cream filling is a great balance of creamy, tart, and fresh raspberry flavor. Wonderful consistency, as is the chocolate mousse buttercream.
Many of our guests complimented us on the cake, including my cousin, who is self-admittedly a food snob (her words, not mine, I promise). We also had ice cream sandwiches at the reception (from another vendor) and were initially worried that there’d be too much dessert left over; however, both the cake and ice cream sandwiches were devoured by the end of the night.
Jan is professional, prompt, creative, and a master baker. We cannot wait to have another occasion that calls for cake. We will head straight to Appletree Cake Co.! -

Appletree Cake was easy to work with and the cake was Awesome. I was last minute finding a Groom's Cake for my son's rehearsal dinner and Jan came through for me. Our initial meeting and cake tasting provided us with too many wonderful options to choose from--we ended up choosing a 4-tier cake with vanilla cake with strawberry icing and chocolate cake with chocolate icing. We received so many compliments on how great the cake looked and tasted at our wedding! Not living in Virginia, Jan was very easy to get in touch with and we were able to finalize all the details over the phone before she started on the cake. Jan was even willing to partner with a local florist to incorporate fresh flowers that matched my bouquet into the cake, which turned out amazing. I would highly recommend Appletree Cake Co to anyone in need of a wedding cake, or any type of cake for that matter!! -

I had the pleasure of meeting Jan with Appletree at a WeddingWire event. She had the most amazing cake and frosting. We went for a tasting and she had a huge selection for us to choose from. She also made us an entire cake of a special flavor for us to try, as my husband wanted to try something different. She is so wonderful and makes the most amazing cakes. In my opinion, there is no competition when it comes to a wedding cake vendor. Our cake was BEAUTIFUL and tasted amazing. We chose a cake with a lot of detail and it just couldn't have been more amazing. We had 4 tiers with different flavors on each tier. Jan is absolutely fabulous! She made my mother's 60th birthday cake and it was a huge hit at her party. Not only was this cake beautiful with delicately pipped flowers but it also had a custom moon and star (my mother's favorite!!!). The icing on her cake was to die for and the chocolate cake was perfectly paired with layers of chocolate mousse. I cannot express how wonderful her work is and honestly if you do not order a cake through Jan, you are seriously missing out. -

Our cake from Appletree Cake Co. LLC was absolutely amazing! It was so pretty my husband and I felt bad cutting it, but we quickly got over our guilt once we too the first bite. It was so delicious. The cake was fresh and the combination of flavors was perfect. We loved that Jan allowed us to customize every aspect of the cake. We ended up with a four tier cake with vanilla cake/chocolate mouse filling and a chai tea cake/cinnamon cream cheese filling. YUM! We also added some gluten free cupcakes which were equally as delicious. She delivered the cake to our venue, so we were completely worry-free. The cake was so gorgeous I felt a little bit bad cutting it! I had heard about Appletree Cake Co from a friend but I wasn't sure it was what I wanted until we had a chance to try a slice - then WOW! I am very picky when it comes to cake, and it was one thing I really cared a LOT about for my wedding!
I had already been to 4 cake tastings when I came to Jan's, and I had 3 more scheduled over the weekend. After experiencing her awesome, personal service, and trying her amazing cakes, I cancelled the rest of my tastings--I had found The One!
We ended up doing 3 flavors at our wedding, and the guests loved them all. Lemon cake with lemon whip frosting, "turtle" cake--choc with homemade caramel, choc ganache, and nuts, and sour cream vanilla with choc frosting. Each was so so delicious, and even were super yummy when we got back from our honeymoon a week later!
The cake was beautifully decorated, and her price was very reasonable, and she even came out to Williamsburg and set it up for us. I have recommended Appletree Cakes to friends and family, and will be calling Jan for future parties!! -

We walked into Appletree Cake Co. unsure of what we wanted and Jan took all the details we gave her and designed the perfect cake. My sister-in-law had one of Jan's cakes at her wedding and though I wasn't even engaged at the time I knew I had to have her make my cake whenever I got married.

Jan was the perfect fit for our wedding desserts. My husband and I didn't want a traditional cake because we're pretty young and wanted something fun and I was so excited when I found Appletree Cake Co. because not only did they have traditional cake, but cupcakes and cheesecake also! Jan worked with us to find the flavors and decorations we wanted. She was very flexible and considered all of the decoration ideas I threw at her. We checked in to the bigger bakeries and just felt like we were just a number. Jan was very organized and professional. She kept in touch with us through the whole process and gave us a beautiful cake.

Jan with Appletree Cake Co. set the standard for all my other vendors. As soon as I met with her at her home for the consultation I knew I wanted her as our cake vendor. She was so nice and heart warming. She welcomed us as if we were part of her family. Which made me feel so comfortable with her. She had great ideas for our wedding cake. She was so patient with me even when I couldn't decide on a design for the cake. During the cake tasting her samples were amazing. It took all my will power not to lick the plate. I had a difficult time deciding on my cake flavors because all of the samples were delicious. A week or two before the wedding Jan made sure to contact me to make sure we were on the same page for the wedding cake. Even if I wanted to make a change to the cake she was more the willing to accommodate my needs to make sure my cake was my dream wedding cake. Thanks to Jan my wedding cake was the talk of the reception. She did an extraordinary job and the cake looked and tasted amazing. -

It was wonderful working with Jan. She took the time to get to know us and what we were looking for. All the samples were so good it was hard choosing one so we had two cakes. One wedding and the other a grooms cake. The wedding cake was beautiful and tasted amazing. The grooms cake was a bible and it looked absolutely real and of course tasted amazing as well. Great choice! -

Appletree Cake Company was recommended to me by a good friend. I would definitely recommend Appletree Cake Company. The cake was perfect. I had so many compliments on how good it was and there was none left. Jan was so easy to work with and I had a budget and we were able to make it work within my budget. -

If you want to enjoy the best cake you have ever tasted then use Jan with Appletree Cakes! We used the chai cake with buttercream frosting and it was to die for! However, we were a little upset that the cake she brought to our wedding was not exactly like the picture that we had initially given her at our tasting. As well as the ribbon being a completely different color than we had provided for her to use for the cake.... Moreover, the room the cake was stored in at our wedding was about 67-69 and by the time we went to cut the cake the decorative borders around the cake were melting and made the cake sink in and sag :( The cake was delicious but I would not use or recommend Appletree, unfortunately. -

We had a chai tea cake with cinnamon frosting and a vanilla cake with mango filling. The flavors were so delicious! Everyone at the wedding loved the taste of both of them! I loved how they were not the typical wedding flavors. It included fondant icing for the design of the cake and it was also delicious! My grandmother mentioned how good the fondant was.
The design of the cake was a little disappointing. I showed a picture to Jan of exactly what I wanted and also showed her what I didn't want and why. The petals on the cake were a little flat and the center of the flower was a little too tight for my liking. Also, the petals kept falling off and the cake was a little lopsided.
Overall, my experience was great! Jan was very sweet and her cakes are delicious! -

Jan was always polite and friendly, worked with my husband and I's needs of being military and planning a wedding from across the country. Our only regret is that we didn't take more time to enjoy our cake at our reception, we were so busy dancing and socializing! But our family and friends raved about it, especially the red velvet cupcakes! It was fresh and moist. We were very happy with our choice to go with Appletree Cake Company. -
