Fort Wayne stands where the confluence of the St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers form the Maumee River. Its location made Fort Wayne an important center of trade. The opening of the Wabash and Erie Canal, which linked the Great Lakes to the Ohio River, passed through Fort Wayne. Later, the city became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system, and the influx of workers and materials helped the city to flourish.
