Since 1951, Skeffington’s Formal Wear has helped generations of customers look and feel their best for life’s most memorable occasions. Founded in Des Moines, Iowa, as one of the country’s early tuxedo rental companies, Skeffington’s has grown into a trusted, family-owned destination for suit and tuxedo rentals and purchases.

Pete Leo joined Skeffington’s in 1954, beginning his career on the ground floor of the Savory Hotel in downtown Des Moines. In 1976, he purchased the company from its original owner, continuing a legacy built on personalized service, quality formalwear, and strong community relationships.

Known affectionately as “Uncle Pete” throughout Des Moines’ southside Italian American community, Pete was more than a pioneer in the formalwear industry. He was also known for his generosity and commitment to giving back. That spirit has remained an important part of Skeffington’s identity, with the company supporting charitable causes and community organizations, including the Variety Club Telethon.

Over the decades, Skeffington’s has remained a true family business, with Pete’s sons, daughters, nephews, and grandchildren contributing to its success. Today, the company continues to be family-owned and operated, carrying forward the same commitment to service, style, and selection.
