Dreams do come true
Deep down in the Yucatan, right outside the sleepy town of Bacalar, on the banks of the Lagoon of Seven Blues, my beautiful wife Pantea and I were married.Sent on 10/07/2019
When we think about that day, and the magic of Bacalar, the love that was in the air, the stunning beauty of the Lagoon, seeing my bride for the first time in her dress, exchanging our vows, the music, the food, everything was so much more than we could have ever have hoped for or imagined, and it was the people that truly helped to make it such a magical experience.
Let us start from the beginning with a little background into our relationship and planning process.
When my wife and I first started dated we took a trip to the Yucatan Peninsula to explore the beauty of the Costa Maya and spend some time bumming around Tulum. We rented a car and had an amazing time driving around the two lane highways, exploring Chichen Itza, climbing Coba, and cooling off in fresh water cenotes. Looking for something off the beaten path we took the recommendation of a lovely expat Italian couple who told us if we had the time, and a car, to make it down to Bacalar just north of the Belize border, and once we crested out of the endless jungle to see Laguna Bacalar we knew that this was the place.
Before we got started with the planning we had some issues. We are from the United States, we speak very little Spanish, we have no idea where to get started on how to plan a wedding, let alone one in a foreign country. My wife is also Persian, and we wanted to have elements of a traditional Persian wedding ceremony incorporated into our wedding. All of these obstacles, along with a lot of family and friends who were not to keen on a destination wedding to somewhere they had never heard of in Mexico, made it seem like an almost impossible task. Then we found Pepe and Lorena and Paraiso Bacalar.
Lorena was our direct contact and helped us plan and coordinate everything, and she is amazing at what she does. Lorena was patient, informed, always available, and always willing and ready to try and meet our accommodations. She translated menus, took time to explain everything, helped us lineup an amazing photographer, flower designer, caterer, the DJ, everything that she recommended was spectacular. We sent her pictures on ideas for flowers, and told her we wanted lots of lights and candles. We needed our Sofreh Aghd, a traditional Persian wedding table, and all of the special elements that adorn it, but being unable to see anything in person left us worried and nervous that something could go wrong, or things would not be what we had imagined.
Our wedding day was everything we could have imagined and so much more. The staff at Paraiso Bacalar turned in already amazing natural venue into a place you would only find in a fairytale. Flowers adorned from every table, string lights hung from everywhere, the decor, the tables, everything was so much better then expected and much more than we anticipated.
Pepe, who runs Paraiso Bacalar, is one of the most genuine and kind people I have had the chance to meet. Leading up to, and on the day of he, Lorena, and his incredible staff worked tirelessly to make sure that everything was perfect. Not only that but his beautiful wife also made our exquisite cake, and our spectacular desert table, it was absolutely phenomenal. We had guest coming from all over the globe and Pepe went out of his way to make a sign with arrows and distances pointing to Isfahan, Iran and Ethiopia, everyone felt touched and welcomed.
Our bartenders were fantastic, and our servers were amazing. I wish I had everyone's name and I could thank the individually, but no one had an empty glass all night. As far as the food and dinner goes, I assumed that we would encounter similar fare to a typical wedding in the States, dry chicken, fish, or chewy steak. Dinner was incredible; as the sun was beginning to set Mariachis came out and sang serenades capped with howling gritos. From the Antojitos, to the Sopa de Lima, to the cheese and charcuterie table at the end of the night everything was fresh, delicious, expertly prepared and presented impeccably. The music was perfect, and our DJ's kept the dance floor packed the entire night.
At the end of the evening we gathered everyone along the banks of the lagoon and let Chinese lanterns float off into the sky.
It was truly the most magical night of our lives, and more than we ever could have dreamed for. We would like to thank everyone who had a part in making this such an amazing experience for us and our guests. Thank you Lorena. Thank you to Pepe and your beautiful wife and son. Thank you to everyone at Paraiso Bacalar, please know that anytime you are out our way Mi Casa Es Su Casa!
