Margaret Young graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of science in consumer sciences and a master of science in human environmental sciences with a concentration in restaurant hospitality management and food sciences. She then moved to New York City to attend the International Culinary Center, where she received grand diplomas in professional pastry arts, the art of international bread baking and cake techniques and design.
Young began her professional career in baking, first as intern, then as sous chef at Ron Ben-Israel Cakes. As one of the world’s preeminent bakers, Ben-Israel is well-known throughout the baking world for his wedding and special occasion cakes and for his detail in sugar paste flowers. He is also nationally-known for hosting Food Network’s Sweet Genius and as a judge on Cake Wars.
