Lake Superior Zoo started in 1923 when Duluth businessman Bert Onsgard decided to build a simple pen for his pet deer, Billy. As Billy’s pen gained more visitors the idea to construct a zoo soon spread across the community. Locals donated their money and resources to see the dream come to life, and now it serves thousands of guests each year.
