18 Aug, 2012The story of our wedding
Tom and I met as I was working for the Boys & Girls Club as the Director of Volunteer Services. My boss asked me to interview him for a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Air Force. Tom was one of the Board members for the Club and this award was very prestigious. I kind of rolled my eyes, but she insisted (she was also my best friend) and she told me that I would find him very interesting.
It was so true! Tom swept me off my feet, I wrote a brilliant nomination and he invited me to join him at the Awards Ceremony at Vandenburg Airforce Base where he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his Volunteerism by the Colonel. We were engaged over the Holidays, although we waited until the following August to get married.
We had a beachside wedding on Goleta beach near the pier on a perfect summer day. Our wedding ceremony was officiated by our dear friend and my co-worker, Pastor Conrad Gonzales. It was attended by more than 50 of our closest friends and family members, fellow Rotarians, and members of the various service groups my husband and I belonged to.

My friend Makiko made a Huppa for us to honor my Jewish heritage, but she made it from bright red cloth and stenciled it with the Chinese symbols for double happiness to represent Tom's Chinese-American lineage. The result was beautiful, and uniquely our own. At the four corners of the Huppa, we wrote the words we hope will be the bedrocks of our marriage: Faith, Hope, Courage, and Serenity.
Tom's son, Tim was his best man, and his grandson, Ethan was our ring bearer. Grandaughter Abbey, just 3, was the most darling flower girl. What a beautiful start to our life together.
