23 Mar, 2019The story of our wedding
During the spring semester of my first year of law school, I had a bit of a workout addiction (some things did not stay with me). Working out in the Ludlam Point gym one day, I saw a handsome guy working out with a Clemson necklace on. Being from SC and as homesick as I was, I couldn't resist talking SC with a cute boy! This started months of hanging out together at the pool, which included months of Carson asking me on dates. Then came the day he said he would make me dinner in myapartment (I don't turn down a free meal). The rest, as they say, is history! Except the pasta, it's made at least weekly in the Southerland household.
For Carson's big Dirty Thirty, I planned a trip to Philadelphia and Moorestown, Carson's home town, to see friends and take him to an Eagles game. The Eagles game plan turned into an awesome road trip, one of my best friends (Dana) coming along, a Flyers game, and exploring Philly. Dana was a rower at Temple, so she insisted on going to Boathouse Row, which she had basically lived on for years of her life. On a walk past all the boathouses, Carson and I walked into a beautiful little park between some houses. Carson asked her if this was a place my Grandpa (a lifetime rower) would like and apologized for never getting to meet him. After saying that he hopes my Grandpa would love him as much as he loves me, Carson got down on one knee and brought out the most beautiful ring I've had ever seen!

So we threw out having a theme, and just followed our hearts! The color scheme was daffodils and blue, becuase of the bridesmaid dress color I fell in love with. Plus, shades of blue makes life really easy! Carson loves greenery, and we chose a venue that stood gorgeous without a hint of decoration, so simply greenry throughout it was! The girls wore steel blue, the MOH wore a purpley gray, and the boys (including my bridesman) wore gray with blue ties. I let the flower girls pick whatever dress they wanted (both of which, of course, were the twirly ones). Since I couldn't talk my husband into a bowtie, I talked our ring bearer into one. The dog donned a simple "Best Dog" handkerchief, and he naturally stole the show. My Godmother did the ceremony, which included pasta, National Margarita Day, and most importantly, football. She absolutely knocked it out of the park. There were no florals as decorations, but the ones were carried were this colorful wonderfulness that just showed the happiness of the day. The aisle was lined with laterns, and instead of an arch, we had two bourbon barrels with more laterns and greenery. Our guestbook was a bourbon barrel topper, too. Cocktail hour was ladder golf and cornhole with passed apps, a cheese plate, and an open bar. For each of our tables at the reception, we had a different hole of Augusta National, complete with a watercolo drawing of the flower the hole was named after. Our cake and desserts were made by a dear friend of ours (we are still getting asked about these over a month later). The favor was coozies in our football colors (Clemson for him, Miami and Tennessee for me!) with our hashtag on them. Our cake topper was a little Clemson Tiger in a tux and Smokey (Tennessee's mascot) in a wedding dress with little clay cats and a dog for our babies. Food was delicious, and the bar was flowing! We danced the night away, and a trolley dropped us off at our favorite bar after. It was us, it was understated, and it was our celebration of love with people from every episode of our lives, separate and together. If I had to do it over again, I honestly wouldn't change a thing!
