    Breathtaking Wedding Venue!

We feel so lucky to have found The Farmstead for our wedding venue. Bill and his team are truly incredible people to work with. From the moment we began the planning process, Bill’s kindness, professionalism, calming presence, and quiet confidence shone so bright. He made every step of planning easy and fun. We felt prioritized, taken care of, and we always left each meeting with Bill’s reminder to “focus on our love, because that matters more than anything”. The venue itself is absolutely breathtaking, and feels so secluded, intimate, and romantic. Our guests raved about the venue: they loved having the ability to explore the grounds, play with the animals, and immerse themselves in complete serenity. Our wedding day was a total breeze: Bill and his team were flexible to our needs, and constantly checked in on my husband and I to make sure we were enjoying the day. We truly felt so cared for on our special day. To put the cherry on top, Bill’s culinary skills are fabulous, top tier, unbeatable. The menu he put together for us was absolutely delicious and farm fresh, truly I’ve never had better food at a wedding. To summarize, we more than recommend The Farmstead for your wedding. Bill and his team have created something truly special.

The Farmstead is the Best in the Business

I just had to give a massive shout-out to Bill Ference and his incredible team at The Farmstead in Harvard, Massachusetts. Bill is an exceptional chef, and his long experience as a caterer really shows in the quality of the food.

The Farmstead itself is breathtaking—a beautiful farm-to-table venue with incredible views that add to the magic of any event.

I've been in the wedding business since 1976 and have literally performed at thousands of weddings across my career. I’ve played at the most prestigious wedding venues in New England, so when I tell you a team is exceptional, you can take that to the bank.

Recently, Bill and his team at The Farmstead ran an event – my youngest stepdaughter’s marriage – that was absolutely flawless, despite a very challenging and iffy weather situation. Things did not look like they were going to go well, but the entire staff worked together seamlessly to deliver a truly great event. It was absolutely perfect. If you’re looking for a venue where you know the team can handle anything and deliver perfection, you need to call The Farmstead. They are the best in the business.

    Beautiful and unique!!

Friendly Crossways was such a fabulous and unique venue for me and my husband's wedding this past August. It is a large, old farmhouse in Harvard, MA, surrounded by stunning grounds and a working farm. Mary Helan and Keith and their staff were attentive, flexible, and incredibly hardworking - honestly every detail of our wedding day went smoothly and better than I could have imagined. My favorite part of Friendly Crossways is that since it is a working hostel (we rent out the entire house for the wedding though), we could have 30 of our closest friends and family spend the entire weekend there with us. It was truly a dream come true!!

    Perfect All In One Venue

We had our wedding here this past weekend (Oct 2021). We had 30 people and was everything we could have asked for. The micro wedding package fit our needs perfectly. The ceremony space is gorgeous, with so many beautiful spots for pictures. Dinner under the tent was delicious, Mary Helan the chef-owner made an incredible meal, much of it sourced from her garden and orchard. We loved Friendly Crossways especially for the retreat center which enabled us to host all of our guests who chose to spend the night with us, we moved to the fire pit after our reception and got to put off clean up until the morning. We got to be present with our guests and we had an absolutely perfect night. I can’t thank Mary Helan and her team enough. They were very responsive via email and answered all my questions, making suggestions and offering insight that helped us plan our day. I would recommend Friendly Crossways to anyone, planning big or small.

Amazing venue, such wonderful staff and so easy to work with!

We had our wedding at Friendly Crossways, about 30 guests. Friendly Crossways provided both the venue space and the catering, both were super huge parts in making our wedding day so perfect.

Mary Helan was a breeze to work with, super quick to respond, so helpful and friendly. We had friends and family stay with us both before and after the wedding which was so special to have all at the venue location. THE FOOD!!! The cooks use fresh food from the garden right there, it was so soooo good and does not get any fresher than that!

Everything was so seamless on our day, Mary Helan helped us with so many steps to make it all go so well. I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants to have a stunning outdoor venue with great food and people around you!

Beautiful venue, great management, perfect day

We selected friendly crossways as the venue for our wedding that took place in June 2021. From our first meeting in April of 2020, we were blown away by the professionalism, attention to detail, integrity, and thoroughness of the staff and crew.

    Facilities:
The venue is situated on a gorgeous and functioning farm in a beautifully rural area of Massachusetts that is still easily accessible from the Boston/Worcester metropolis. The grounds are gorgeous, featuring, relevant to events, brilliantly maintained rolling hills, covered with lush, expertly maintained grass, beautiful gardens and large, ancient trees that provide plenty of shaded areas for ceremonies etc. We performed our wedding ceremony on a picturesque boulder set into a hillside, overlooking a shaded glen where the audience was seated, bound by hedges and flowering trees and bushes.

There is also a large, flat area suitable for reception tent placement nearby, with beautiful views in three direction of rolling fields and the adjacent managed forest.

Convenient to the area where we conducted our reception is the retreat center building itself. A sprawling farmhouse/ hostel, our bridal party spent the better part of an hour wandering it's hallways and staircases and hidden ways, discovering bunk rooms and lofts etc. We were able to accommodate all of the bridal party in comfort, and had plenty of picturesque places to get ready for our moment. It was also an incredibly convenient way to keep guests safe if they were unable to drive home as there was plenty of extra space for folks to crash after the festivities.

    The staff:

The owners are not wedding planners, but sometimes it felt that way with the degree to which they knew what need to be done every step of the way. Through their recommendations (and discreet, polite and completely justified non-recommendations), we were able to connect with an amazing team of vendors, who knew the property, and were able to all coordinate together, with friendly crossways management involved and in communication with them all, so that everybody knew what was needed, what would work with the property and the resources in the area, and what to expect. The email chains were long and complex, with many people cc'd in, and friendly crossways management team was in every chain, closing loose ends, making connections and missing nothing. On speaking to the vendors after, they without exceptions raved about the professionalism and thoroughness of the venue. I cannot speak enough about how far above and beyond our expectations they went in every way.

The level of logistical competence was far in excess of what was needed. These people could run an invasion of Russia in the wintertime.

    I'll stop babbeling.

We got far more from the venue then we ever could have expected. We got far more then our money's worth for choosing them. I absolutely recommend them for any event or retreat.

    Beautiful venue

We were so happy and still thinking about our day at Friendly Crossways. We were very happy with everything. Your place was very beautiful. The weather couldn’t have been better. The big green area that kids could roam around freely was perfect. Food and servers were all very professional. We have recommended you to multiple friends already."

    Beautiful, COVID safe venue

My brother got married at Friendly Crossways this year, and it was an absolutely wonderful venue. They had planned to have a larger wedding, but chose to scale down so they could still get married this year. Mary Helan and Keith, the business owners, were so warm and welcoming, and they kept everything running smoothly and safely. The wedding was small, only about 30 people or so, and it all felt very intimate and special. My brother and his wife got married in their wedding glade, on these beautiful rock steps surrounded by a very woodland vibe. There couldn't be dancing, but there were lots of fun lawn games that let everyone get involved and hang out together while still saying safe. The bride and groom also came up with a specialized trivia game for each of the tables to have an activity during the reception. The ceremony was lovely, we all had a wonderful time, and it was just a truly special occasion despite all the uncertainty with COVID and the last minute changes.

    Our October Wedding

We were so grateful to get this venue for our wedding. Our previous venue could not accommodate our wedding due to COVID. We had to change our plans but, in the end it all worked out. The grounds are gorgeous and it’s nice you are able to have the venue for the whole weekend. The guests that we could have there felt very safe while outside at our wedding. Our wedding day was beautiful and perfect- we were super pleased.

    Perfect Summer Wedding

My fiance and I planned to get married in Italy but had to cancel our plans due to COVID. We decided to keep our original wedding date and reached out to Friendly Crossways as a backup plan. It turned out to be the best decision ever! Our wedding was absolutely perfect. We don't even want to think of it as a plan b because it was everything we could have dreamed of. Mary Helen was amazing at helping us find a way to get married safely without sacrificing the experience. We were able to have a wonderful weekend with our immediate family filled with love, joy, and the most delicious food we've every tasted. Mary Helen, Keith, and the entire staff was amazing and made us feel so comfortable, safe, and right at home. They are so talented and welcoming - by the end of the weekend they felt like family. Mary Helen is so fun to work with, it is like talking with an old friend. She is also an amazing cook and was able to accommodate vegetarian, gluten free, and meat loving family members without compromising flavor or variety. We could not have asked for a better experience, especially given the circumstances. We absolutely recommend Friendly Crossways and can't say enough good things about them!

    Great experience

Our daughter had plans to get married this past July, during a visit to Italy, but had to change plans due to the pandemic. She chose Friendly Crossways and we could not have been happier with the experience. The staff was amazing; even with the strict social distancing and mask requirement, they went out of their way to accommodate every guest’s needs without compromising safety. From providing vegan meal options to making sure every room was cool during a heat spell, we felt well cared for. We also felt we got to know Mary Helan, Keith and the staff quite a bit since their friendly demeanor made it easy to chat with them. It felt like they were part of the family. But the piece de resistance was the food. Wow, from the first evening’s rehearsal dinner to the breakfasts and the big wedding meal, we were wowed by the creativity and flavor of the various dishes. With ingredients grown either on their farm or locally, it was a showcase of how farm-to-table is to be employed. Mary Helan even went our of her way when a guest asked for an eggplant dish she had never prepared before: she found a recipe that she then adapted to her ingredients and the results were outstanding. Overall we highly recommend Friendly Crossways, between the location, the staff and the cuisine, they made the experience unforgettable.

    Intimate, homey, and extremely professional

Friendly crossways offered the perfect backdrop to celebrate our wedding weekend. The grounds are absolutley beautiful and the inn itself is the rustic and quaint building that dreams are made of. The ability to enjoy the grounds for such an extended time allowed us to fully enjoy our weekend without feeling rushed or scattered. We spent quality time with all of our friends and family and enjoyed a little extra time to just reflect and relax as we listened to the sounds of nature and the crackling of the fire.

Friendly crossways offered the perfect backdrop to celebrate our wedding weekend. When you find yourself on the grounds you are immediately surrounded by flowers, bushes, and trees of all varieties. The vegetable garden, rows of corn, and fire pit add a country feel that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The building itself is the quaint little inn that rustic dreams are made of. The space itself is impeccably clean and cozy. Not only that, but there is a feeling that you have arrived home when you first walk inside the door. It has such a wonderful vibe and all our guests immediately felt welcome and at ease. This was huge for us because we wanted our weekend to feel casual and inviting so people could truly unwind and reconnect with one another.

The staff at Friendly Crossways was also always handy if you needed anything at all. They were present without interrupting quality family time or feeling overbearing. It was the perfect balance of convenience and comfort for everyone. The ability to enjoy the grounds for such an extended time also allowed us to fully enjoy our weekend without feeling rushed or scattered. We spent quality time with all of our friends and family from Friday evening until Sunday morning. We used the extra time to reflect and relax by the fire as we listened to the sounds of nature and gazed at the stars in the sky. It really is a magical place in the stillness of the night. You feel extremely far removed from the city, despite the fact that it's only about 45 minutes to Boston.

Beyond all of that, our celebration could not have been more seamless. We did not actually have our ceremony that weekend. Instead, we entrusted FC with our reception, which included all our friends and extended family. Seamless really is the perfect word to describe the entire weekend. From getting the tent setup on Friday to handling the caterer, bar services, and general flow of people coming to and from the parking lot, FC did it all with ease. They are true professionals and you can tell that they have done this many, many times before. You will be in excellent hands with Mary Helen, Keith and the crew at FC. Whatever you need done, the team at FC will be able to deliver what you need and then some. Save yourself the headache and get out there to meet the team and see the beautiful grounds. You may even get the chance to try some of Mary Helen’s famous pie!!

Friendly, tasty, beautiful, joy-filled, magical. Fire circle!

Because all of our friends and family were traveling for our wedding, we wanted a welcoming, joy-filled space that would allow them to stay for the whole weekend. Friendly Crossways gave us this and so much more.

Our group landed on Friday and didn't leave until Sunday. So many of our favorite memories happened outside of "official wedding" times - s'mores by the campfire, ping pong in the "subterranean suite," board games until 3am, friends from different groups lounging on the front porch over breakfast. Friendly Crossways had the perfect amount of room, giving everyone plenty of room to explore while still feeling cozy. The rooms were all very comfortable and clean. The outdoor space was gorgeous and filled with flowers, and perfect for everything from photos to frisbees. Seriously, the photos turned out amazingly.

As for the wedding itself, Mary Helan and Keith are incredible planners. They were super supportive, and amazingly fast on email. Whenever we came to them with "unique" ideas, their first thoughts were always "well how can we make this happen here?" They are super familiar with the flow of events and spaces, and have great advice for how to make things fit. They independently checked in with all the vendors the week before the wedding and made sure everything was thought of along the way.

Our wedding felt like a big operation to us - a Tea Ceremony and pre-wedding dinner with 70 people; friends cooking breakfast for 45 people; an outdoor wedding with 95 people. Most of the beds were full for the whole weekend. But the staff at FC made it look like a breeze, and made it feel like a breeze to us. We cannot thank or recommend them enough. Big or small, busy or relaxed, formal or chill - this team can make anything happen.

Oh, and the food was incredible.

One of our out-of-town friends loved the wedding so much, he booked FC as a hostel for the whole rest of the week. Another one of our friends raved about his first "sleepaway camp" wedding, and proposed having one here every year. If those aren't recommendations, we don't know what are.

    A very special wedding weekend

We had an amazing wedding weekend at Friendly Crossways. The setting is absolutely stunning. The forest, fields, and spacious grounds are beautiful. The inn is unique, charming, and elegant. We can’t stress enough how meaningful and special it was to have so much time and space to host our family and close friends at the inn. Our actual wedding was spectacular but we were most pleasantly surprised by the quieter moments of playing cards late in the evening, toasting marshmallows, and just talking and building new relationships across our families. You can get married just about anywhere but at Friendly Crossways you’re given the chance to live out your values of putting relationships first. Beyond just the format of having this wonderful space for the whole weekend, the service, attention, and care that Mary Helan, Keith, and their staff put into their weddings is professional and personal. They are authentic, helpful, laidback while still attentive, and creative. Mary Helan’s pies and the food from their catering company was the best food I’ve ever had from a wedding caterer and the process of deciding on everything was seamless. Their recommended tent and rental company is also amazing and easy to work with. We really have no complaints, big or small. We’d do it all over again the same way in a heartbeat. Thank you so much for making our wedding so memorable!

The PERFECT rustic DIY venue in Massachusetts

I hardly know what to say - Friendly Crossways was the PERFECT venue for our rustic wedding this past October. Both Mary Helan and Lisa were exceptional throughout the planning process, helping me to decide, plan, navigate, and just calm down! It was so easy having most of our vendors in the same place. We had our rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, catering, and lodging all there, and even held 2 breakfasts, a lunch, and lawn games there too! It was a dream come true to have all of our friends and family staying in the same house for a whole weekend, and we didn't have to worry about transportation to and from all of the events! The property is gorgeous, the farm house feels like home, and the people are so helpful and caring. Mary Helan is a wonderful chef, and the food was fresh from her garden and phenomenally prepared. We went back and forth so many times with the catering menu, but she was only helpful and understanding. My husband kept saying that he can't wait to have his next wedding there haha! As we were leaving, we were trying to come up with a reason to have all of our family and friends back there for a weekend. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS VENUE!!!!! Note: If you are looking for a super fancy, everything done for you place, this isn't it. It is very rustic and DIY, which is what we were looking for, so if that's your style, look no further!

    Amazing Experience at Friendly Crossways

Friendly Crossways was the first venue we looked at and after researching several before going to see the property, we knew from the moment we stepped foot on the property we were sold. Laid back yet totally professional, we had a casual ceremony and reception of about 125 people over a weekend celebration. The rental of the property was a third of what others were asking and provided a place to stay, eat, and celebrate with us for the entire weekend. The staff made us feel at home and we would recommend this location for anyone looking for something outdoors, rustic and wonderful.

    Best.Day.Ever

We visited Friendly Crossways, on a cold rainy day, but knew it was perfect. The planning process was so laid back, which was great because my ambitious DIY endeavors, participation in two other weddings, and a year at a new job, took up a lot of my life. When planning the menu, Mary Helan gave input on food parings, and really worked with us to create an impressive spread that fit our budget. At the end of everything our day was PERFECT, I actually kept telling myself that something had to go wrong because everything was so flawless. But, nothing ever went wrong. Our amazing friends helped with setup and decorating day of, and it was so heartwarming to know all the work they put in behind the scenes to make our day so special. The fire pit at the end of the night wrapped everything up perfectly, we were able to cozy up with blankets and smore’s and laugh at all the crazy dancing we did.
Two of our friends, who were married a month before us, said, “We don’t want to say your wedding was the best wedding ever, because of our wedding, but your wedding was the best wedding ever.” It really was the best.wedding.ever. Thank you thank you, Mary Helan and Keith for giving us the greatest gift of memories we have ever received.

Working with Friendly Crossways was great - they helped guide us through the process, and let us know what to expect. The accomodations are really nice, and well laid out - our family in from out of town were all able to stay together which really made a difference. The grounds are beautiful, and we loved being in the space - having a fire circle made the magic of the evening seem to last forever. We would definitely recommend Friendly Crossways!

We had about 35 people staying for the weekend, and then about 75 for the ceremony - but FC could have easily accomodated more.

From the moment we walked into Friendly Crossways on a cold blustery spring day, we knew we found our happy (wedding celebration) place. We loved that we could rent the whole property for the weekend and have our out of town friends stay with us from Friday to Sunday. We loved that we could do as little or as much as we had strength for in terms of decoration, hosting the non reception meals, organizing weekend activities etc. Even with all the cold and rain of that spring day, we could easily imagine the flowers in bloom, the green fields and bountiful gardens in the summer.

We were charmed by the laid-back, non-fussy yet romantic vibe, the unique character of the place, the expansive space surrounding the property and last but certainly NOT least, the warmth and authenticity of the owners. Mary Helan and Keith have been instrumental in making our party the best we could possible wish for. From the moment we met, it felt like we were planning our weekend with capable, generous friends who listened, got to know us and understood exactly what kind of party we wanted to have. They gave us lots of room for creativity but steered us gently when we were about to make unwise decisions. Oh, and the food! where to start? one of the hardest decisions what choosing appetizers and entrees, since all the options are creative, seasonal, local and delicious. The tomato corn cheese pie is not to be missed. But then again, so are the bacon-wrapped dates, the crostini, zucchini round, pork... and the pies, oh my!
The planning process was easy and efficient, Lisa, our planner sent a few very helpful sheets to assist with meal and beverage ordering, tasks and timelines. She kept track of our progress and made sure we hit due dates with all vendors including bar and tent rental.
When our day arrived, I felt nothing but joy and excitement. Everything turned out perfectly, much of it thanks to our choice to have our celebration at Friendly Crossways. Thank you Mary Helan & Keith!

The venue was absolutely wonderful! Our wedding weekend was so memorable and it was, in part, by the inclusiveness and style of the property. We had all our closest friend stay on the property with us the whole weekend. The fire-pit was so lovely and the bonding with everyone made the whole weekend a success. Mary and Keith were so helpful with the entire planning process. Mary is responsive, patient and thoughtful. Her years of experience and professionalism really shows when she suggests how to tackle a problem. You can tell she has seen it all. They worked with us and helped us manage the whole thing. Having friends stay on the property also allowed so many people to feel like they were part of the wedding versus just guests. It was truly a wonderful weekend and the place is just beautiful. You won't go wrong with this venue, and you will survive the whole process without breaking the bank.

We had a super fun wedding weekend at Friendly Crossways. You and all your friends can sleep over at the house (a refurbished farmhouse) for 2 nights. Their home-cooked catering is excellent. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful.

Friendly Crossways was the most wonderful place to have a wedding! My husband and I got married there this past summer, and we could not have asked for a more perfect location and venue. It was so great to have the hostel exclusively for the entire weekend. We had our rehearsal dinner right there at FC on Friday, and the wedding was Saturday evening, and then we had a brunch on Sunday morning, and Mary Helan and Keith were so helpful and accommodating and flexible the entire time. We enjoyed our rehearsal dinner on their beautiful front porch, and had a great evening at the fire pit both Friday and Saturday after the wedding. We had a very DIY wedding, and it was perfect having Friday afternoon, and all Saturday to set up. It made the entire setting up process so much more relaxed and enjoyable than it would have been at a traditional venue where we only had 6-8 hours. Because of this, on the day of the wedding I was extremely relaxed and calm, which is what every bride needs on the day of their wedding. They were so helpful of special requests, and they really try to make the entire experience relaxed and carefree for the couple. All of the staff were tremendous and went above and beyond the call of duty. The food was incredible, Mary Helan is an amazing chef, and she truly does not made a bad dish. Our wedding day was absolutely perfect, and FC was the perfect spot for an outdoor, countryside wedding celebration. I would recommend Friendly Crossways to anyone who wants a beautiful wedding that you will remember for the rest of your life!

My husband and I were in search of a wedding venue that could bring our love for Vermont to our Massachusetts families. The setting, the personality/feel of the venue, AND the amazing food exceeded all of our hopes and expectations. Absolutely select Mary Helan as your caterer. Dinner was the best any of us have had at a wedding and the pies flew off the buffet! Our guests were blown away - they could not get over how beautiful the grounds were.

A fantastic venue for any DIY bride. A beautiful, rustic location with all the time and flexibility you can hope for.
As many brides and grooms know, when you are planning your wedding, EVERY minute counts. It makes such a big difference to have the whole weekend to prepare, setup, and breakdown your wedding while sharing more time with your family and friends. The luxury of not having to "clear out" the same evening as your event is worth more than gold.

Mary Helan, Keith, and their staff are an absolute pleasure to work with. Trust them - this is not their first rodeo! ;)

We are so happy that we chose Friendly Crossways for our July 2017 wedding! The spot was overflowing with flowers and green in the summer, and perfectly reflected the relaxed environment that we wanted for our wedding weekend. We were easily able to host a large group of friends and family on-site, which we wanted.
Mary Helan and Keith were wonderful hosts, and their expertise in putting on weddings helped tremendously. Communication throughout the process was excellent, and they were always very responsive to our questions and requests. The food! I can’t forget to mention how wonderful the meal was. I am so pleased with every aspect of our wedding weekend at Friendly Crossways.

Friendly Crossways was everything we could have imagined and more for a perfect wedding weekend. The setting is gorgeous and will make any weather situation magical. Our friends enjoyed the hostel and land so much that we plotted ways to come back as a group. Our parents had wonderful long conversations with the staff during the day and late night when things were not hectic. The fire circle surrounded by loved ones to start the weekend and to end the wedding helped make it all a dream.

For planning, Mary and Lisa were very helpful and communicative on all details and all the various questions that came up along the way. They are very experienced and handled a lot of details that made the important event smooth including building a beautiful and highly functional bar setup. On the day of, Keith was available to troubleshoot a leaky situation with our friends due to heavy morning rain. For catering, Mary created a vegan/vegetarian menu and made accommodations for several preferences and allergies. My best man and other meat eaters, who joked about needing to bring their own food, could not stop telling us how much they enjoyed the baked zucchini. Skip the traditional cake and go with pies, that is a command, not a suggestion :).

For those looking to have a full weekend wedding and go rain or shine outdoors, this is definitely the spot to have it. There is a lot of DIY elements so be prepared to put in the effort and your design hats. We also could not have pulled off a successful event without the help of many friends pitching in, especially one who we had 100% trust in and acted as our liaison/coordinator and made sure things happened better than we could plan them. Go with Mary for the catering, take advantage of using the kitchen for group brunches, and make sure to ask Mary and Lisa for their suggestions in planning and design as their feedback helped tweak things in better directions.

The owners of this beautiful wedding venue are personally involved in planning and putting on each and every wedding. This is exceptional, as are their terms...where else can you rent a beautiful pastoral hostel/retreat center that sleeps 60 people for an entire weekend for a flat fee?

Mary and Keith at Friendly Crossways did so much behind the scenes to make my daughter and daughter-in-law's wedding weekend a magical and wonderfully pleasurable time for all who came to celebrate. I can't imagine a better place to have held this joy-filled event - a venue that many people said felt just right for who this particular couple are and for the people they love and who love them. Those who go to - and stay at - Friendly Crossways to celebrate important events are lucky indeed, including getting to enjoy Mary's amazing cooking.

From the very beginning Mary Helen and Keith made us feel welcome and excited to have our wedding on their property. They were accommodating to all of our requests, including our wedding meal of pulled pork and mac and cheese. There is so much room for the bridal party to stay on site, and additional guests as needed. As our friends are from all over the country, it was perfect to be able to have everyone together from Friday-Sunday. Keith also went above and beyond to make sure that a very important light fixture was hung in the tent. Words cannot express our gratitude for making our day perfect!

My husband and I knew as soon as we saw Friendly Crossways, that this was the only wedding venue for us. We loved that we could add our own personal touches on everything and that we could spend the entire weekend with family and friends. Mary Helen and Keith were great, helping us work out all of the little details so things could come together smoothly. Even when it rained during our ceremony, they did everything they could to make our outdoor ceremony work and keep our guests as dry as possible. We also had Mary Helen cater, and the food was delicious! All of their staff was fun, friendly and professional. We could not have asked for a better place to get married!

Our wedding weekend could not have been a more wonderful experience, and we have Friendly Crossways in large part to thank for that. Mary Helan and Keith understood the event we wanted to have from the very beginning, and were always responsive in answering our questions along the way. The few hiccups we hit in planning were mostly due to being first time event planners, but in spite of the work it took to pull it off, we couldn't be happier. For a laid-back wedding with lots of time to spend with family and friends, we can't imagine a more perfect venue.

We are SO happy that we found Friendly Crossways for our July wedding! It was a magical weekend (complete with a double rainbow overlooking the fields!) with a beautiful venue, delicious food, and an incredibly personalized touch (we were the only guests on-site for the entire weekend).

When we began our wedding search, we realized that one of our biggest priorities was creating a sense of genuine community and hospitality for our family and friends. Friendly Crossways was amazing place to do just that! We loved having the retreat center and property for a rehearsal dinner picnic the day before the wedding AND a Sunday lunch the day after the wedding-- it was a beautiful and relaxed gathering spot for people to come together! In the months leading up to the wedding, Mary Helan was a responsive and helpful point-of-contact. She answered our many questions thoroughly and with many great ideas and we particularly appreciated how she worked with our budget in creative and thoughtful ways!

During the wedding weekend itself, Mary Helan, Keith and their staff were very welcoming and also gave us the space to feel like we truly could feel at home in the retreat center. They really seemed to share our joy and helped us create a very personalized, special day!

This is certainly a "do it yourself" style venue--- it will be up to you to coordinate vendors, to create your vision, to delegate tasks-- but through the decision making and work of this, you will be SO supported by Mary Helan and will feel like your wedding weekend is in very very good hands.

We are so delighted that we chose Friendly Crossways for our wedding!
    - Julie and Alyssa

We had our wedding last month at Friendly Crossways, and it really was the perfect venue for us. It was very important to us to find a place that felt relaxed and that gave us the time and space to spend with all our guests who'd traveled so far to celebrate with us. Friendly Crossways was all those things! We loved having the venue for the whole weekend, which was easy for our guests - especially those who stayed at the venue with us. As a bride, it was lovely not to have to travel anywhere the day of the wedding, and so I felt quite relaxed and unhurried. My only regret is that we didn't start the wedding a bit sooner (we started at 4:30). I found myself wishing we'd had a bit more time for the reception, but that may just be that we were having so much fun and didn't want it to end!

Mary Helan and Keith were so wonderfully helpful and kind - they really make you feel that your wedding is not just a business transaction but a special occasion to be celebrated. They made sure everything ran smoothly, and Mary Helan's food was absolutely delicious - the guests raved about it! I only wish I'd gotten to eat more of it! We especially loved the fire circle and our guests really loved the lawn games as well. Everyone had such a good time and so many people asked us how we'd found this wonderful place! I'm so glad we chose Friendly Crossways!

We had our wedding at Friendly Crossways last August and it was nothing short of fabulous! Friendly Crossways helped us create a weekend wedding experience we didn't know was possible in the Boston area. Friday and Saturday night, 30 of our friends and family stayed over and everyone had a blast. Mary Helan was somehow present whenever you needed her, but never in the way. We saw Keith less, but everything went off without a hitch, so I know he was doing behind the scenes work to make things run smoothly. Mary Helan also catered our reception and everyone was raving about the food! She and Keith were both extremely professional and helpful. If you're looking for a local destination wedding with laid-back, yet professional staff, this is the place for you!

My husband and I LOVED Friendly Crossways, and so did all our guests. It was the perfect setting for our laid back and casual outdoor wedding. Everyone was wowed by how beautiful and idyllic the grounds were. It was a truly magical place to get married. We loved everything about it. The venue is beautiful and magical, Mary Helan and Keith are such wonderful people, and Mary Helan's food is to die for. We spent the entire weekend at Friendly Crossways with family and friends and the venue created a perfect setting to make our unique vision a reality. Mary Helan was a pleasure to work with. She was accommodating, communicative, and was invested in helping us achieve our unique vision. Let me break it down for you because there is so much to rave about! (1) The property is large. There were at least 3-4 different sites we could choose to have the ceremony. They allow you to have your ceremony wherever you'd like on the property as long as it isn't too close to the honey bees :) On site lodging made everything better – we had 45 friends stay with us! Keith made a campfire both nights our guests loved. (2) Keith + Mary Helan They were committed to helping us make our wedding day exactly how we envisioned it. We corresponded frequently leading up to the wedding and Mary Helan was always quick to respond. She was understanding that wedding planning can be overwhelming, and kept reminding us to have fun with our planning. It was such a relief to work with someone who is as laid back as we are. MH listened to the vision we had for our wedding and helped us actualize it. It was awesome that she was invested in making our wedding feel as uniquely like "us" as a couple, as we were striving for it to be. (3) The Food: FC catered and the food was incredible. Great vegetarian options. Many ingredients came from her garden and everything was fresh. She made delicious pies, using her own blueberries! She provided large and diverse menu options. If I could I'd give more than 5 stars!

Friendly Crossways was the PERFECT venue for our wedding. We wanted a spot that would let us have a welcoming, down-to-earth, ROCKING party, and that was exactly what we got. Mary Helan was hugely helpful throughout the whole planning process. We opted to use her in-house catering, and we're glad we did! The best part of having our wedding at Friendly Crossways was being surrounded by friends and family who stayed at the venue all weekend. We'll forever remember the late nights in front of the fire pit with all our loved ones. Thank you, Mary Helan and Keith!

Our wedding was in October and the colors in Massachusetts were gorgeous. Planning our wedding at Friendly Crossways was easy and fun, and the weekend itself was relaxed, beautiful, and delicious! Much of the food came from the host's garden and tasted great. We were also allowed to use the kitchen and dining hall for more casual family gatherings. The host of the venue is professional and experienced with a quirky sense of humor that made the entire event lots of fun. And...a fantastic fire pit!

Our wedding weekend at Friendly Crossways was truly blissful! Having friends and family with us onsite from Friday night until Sunday afternoon left us with lasting memories we couldn't have gotten elsewhere. It felt like we were all staying at a big family house, complete with the smells and sounds of our family and friends making breakfast together when we woke up on Sunday, we all got to relax with coffee overlooking the countryside and chat about the night before. And what a night! We had the space and flexibility to create just what we wanted, with lots of beautiful lawn for games, a big bonfire and candlelit cocktail tables outside. Plenty of room for a huge tent, with an oversized dance floor and stage for the band. Mary Helen did the food which was amazing, she knows her stuff and everything ran smoothly. The steak tips are seriously good. And the view of the surrounding fields and countryside really make the perfect backdrop for a fun, private event to let loose. I've had several friends tell me it's the best wedding they've been to and I'm lucky to have found it, and I agree :) Thanks Mary Helen!

Friendly Crossways is a truly fantastic and wonderful place for a wedding. It was really important to us to have a place that we could call home for the entire weekend and Mary Helan and Keith definitely made us feel like family. They and their entire staff were amazing. Our guests raved about the food (Mary Helan's catering is fabulous - try the steak tips!), the beautiful setting, and how much we were able to make the whole event feel unique and special (bonfire and smore's after the reception was a huge hit). Many of them joked that they thoroughly enjoyed spending a weekend at our "country home". We loved being able to play lawn games during cocktail hour and serve our own homebrew at the reception. You can make the event as DIY as you like and if not, Mary Helan can recommend vendors to fill just about any need. The whole weekend exceeded anything we could have imagined and feel very lucky to have found such a special place for our wedding.

I cannot thank Mary Helan and Keith enough for a beautiful wedding weekend. Patrick and I wanted a casual, laid-back setting where people could stay over and relax for the weekend with us. Mary Helan and Keith were always very quick in responding to any questions we had during the planning process. The house is beautiful and cozy and the backyard was a stunning setting for our wedding. The food was delicious (we had lime-marinated grilled chicken and tomato corn pie) and people throughout the night were commenting on how great it was. I could not be happier with the experience I had working with Mary Helan and Keith and I highly recommend them as a wedding venue and caterer.

We recently hosted a "vintage carnival" themed wedding at Friendly Crossways. When I came up with this theme I realized that it required a very specific type of venue - one that would allow us to keep such a fun theme classy, one that would still have a beautiful location for our ceremony, and one that would allow us plenty of time for set up! Friendly Crossways provided this and MUCH more. My family lives all over the country, and my husband and my families had never met prior to the wedding. Being able to rent the grounds for the entire weekend allowed for the most beautiful part of our wedding, which was being able to spend time with those we don't see often enough and watching our two families blend. We truly had a beautiful wedding. Our rehearsal dinner (a BBQ on the porch) was absolutely delicious and we immediately started to feel like Friendly Crossways was our home and the staff was our family. Having sleeping arrangements on site was so wonderful, it allowed us all to spend more time together and also not worry about anyone drinking and driving. The grounds were spectacular for our ceremony, the tent was gorgeous, and it was so fun to leave our reception and go to a bonfire with our friends and family for continued fun. After the bonfire we went back into the basement and continued the fun with our friends playing games, and some of the staff even joined us! It was so much fun, the entire weekend truly was magical. Mary Helan was incredibly helpful and responsive during the year or so that I spent planning, and her food was so great, I definitely recommend using her as your caterer. This is the perfect site for anyone who wants a green, DIY wedding where they can relax, connect with family and friends, and just have a beautiful time. My guests haven't stopped raving!!

Everything you will read in these reviews about Friendly Crossways is true—it is a magical place to be married. The grounds are stunning, peaceful, and romantic. Our guests described the setting and the feel as “idyllic,” a “sylvan paradise,” and “elegantly simple, simply elegant.” In the two nights and three days we spent there, we felt our families blending in a way we could not have achieved with a single evening event or even by staying several nights at the same hotel. While we were excited to find Friendly Crossways from the very beginning, we were completely sold when we met Mary Helan and her gracious family and tasted her delicious food. For the wedding we had sea bass, couscous, vegetable pie, and asparagus and everything was fresh, flavorful, and hearty but light all at the same time. A friend who was at her fourth of four weddings this summer, including one at a very upscale hotel, said this was the best food she’d had at any of them (and she shared this as she filled up on her second plate!). Mary Helan is incredibly helpful and accommodating, and although she hosts many weddings, she made me feel like her only bride. She welcomed information about our guests to ensure that she accommodated allergies and dietary preferences and even made a special effort to have peppermint stick ice cream from a specific local vendor on hand for my grandmother. The lack of central air on an unusually hot weekend in July was challenging, but the rooms have window fans and the living room/conference area has an excellent a/c unit. The ceremony space was also shaded enough by the start of our 4:30 pm wedding ceremony that our guests were comfortable, and the evening cooled significantly. The weekend was even lovelier than we had imagined it would be, and we couldn’t be happier that we chose to spend this special time at Friendly Crossways.

We had a fabulous time at Friendly Crossways for our wedding. We rented the place for the whole weekend so that our closest friends and family could spend time together building community, and it all came together better than we could have hoped for. We also had Mary Helan, one of the co-owners, be our caterer, and the food was fabulous. The sea bass and the strawberry shortcake received the highest praise from folks, but the food was universally praised, as actually tasting really good, and not just being your typical wedding fare. Mary Helan and Keith were super helpful all weekend (helping us set up a tarp so we could still grill for our rehearsal dinner, for example, even though it was pouring rain on Friday night), and the weekend was as close to perfect as you can get. We held the ceremony itself onsite outdoors, and the pictures we have so far are just gorgeous. If you can't tell already, we had a fantastic experience.

After looking at 5 or 6 places we finally found Friendly Crossways! Mary Helan and Keith were extremely friendly, helpful and courteous. Our guests drank and danced their buns off in the tent and then walked 45 feet to their beds! I almost wish we had another wedding to throw just so we could go back and do it all over again.

    Mother of the Bride, here:
The landscape at Friendly Crossways is beautiful. The setting for the ceremony and the reception is perfect. The acoustics for the band are excellent. 150 people enjoyed a steady stream of passed hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour, and a delicious dinner, beautifully served.

Mary and Keith requested that we use Special Events of New England for the tent, lighting, tables, chairs and linens. We were very satisfied with their organization and quality. Webber's Florists in Littleton were terrific.

All during the wedding day I felt it was the best day of my life, because my daughter got married to a wonderful guy, and I fell in love all over again with my handsome husband!

To have a successful country garden wedding weekend, in residence at Friendly Crossways, teamwork is very important. Mary and Keith are the captains of the team, and their staff is very helpful. It also takes the teamwork of family and friends to make it all come together. We are grateful to the Turner's for their venue and their leadership.

My wife and I had a full weekend wedding at Friendly Crossways and have absolutely no complaints. All our guests told us how perfect the venue was for us and that they enjoyed the ability to stay onsite and join us for more than just the usual 6 hours. Mary Helan was always accessible, helpful, and accommodating throughout the entire year leading up to our weekend. She and her staff were always friendly and available during the wedding itself, though never intrusive.
The accommodations at Friendly Crossways are pleasant and comfortable, but definitely in keeping with the hostel feeling of the house and grounds. I, for one, felt much more at home as I awoke each morning and joined my family and friends in the large dining room for breakfast and laughs. No toilet-paper-folding hotel with bland continental breakfast would have provided that atmosphere wherein I was unquestionably at ease in my pajamas and enjoying my own egg sandwich. The facilities were fine and definitely in line with our own sensibilities; they encourage recycling and minimizing water use and I think I saw a photovoltaic array on the roof.
The grounds are beautiful during the summer, surrounded by flowers and trees, as well as produce they use in their own catering. We went with another caterer, so I can't comment on the onsite catering. As party favors, however, we used the honey Mary Helan makes from the bees she keeps and were quite pleased with it. The one concern we had about the area was the audible firing range across the street, but we did not hear gunshots at all during the ceremony or in the tent, and only faintly when we were in the house.
All in all, we had a fantastic time at our wedding and throughout the weekend. We believe the value at Friendly Crossways is exceptional, considering the venue cost is comparable to others in the area, but you get full access to the house and grounds for 48 hours (compared to 5 or 6) and it includes accommodations.

I attended a lovely wedding at the Friendly Crossways. It was a beautiful site with excellent facilities. Their incredible service even extended to the day after the wedding when I got home and realized I had lost my own diamond engagement ring. Mary at FC was incredibly helpful and conducted a 3-day all out search of the entire site to help me locate the ring! She and her team went above and beyond the call of duty and I will be forever grateful.

We held a weekend family reunion with our wedding at Friendly Crossways and it was absolutely wonderful. Unlike a formal hotel, this was like a huge campy home where little family groups clustered around the fireplace, sat together in the living room, perched on the bunks in the dorm rooms, played touch football in the yard in the dark, stood in the foyer to chat and hung out in the lower game room, meeting, greeting, playing games and catching up. At mealtimes different branches of both our families mingled and mixed on the buffet line and at the communal tables. PRICELESS! There was lots of bonding and relaxing while our families got to know eachother and were reunited into one.

The food was such a surprise, I was expecting solid camp style food - no, this was decadent, scrumptuous and really impressively delicious. Mary Helan is a true chef, not to mention doing nearly everything else in this family-run operation. She went above and beyond helpful to everyone, she even rescued the ministers, and her honey is out of this world!

We highly recommend Friendly Crossways for friendliness, beauty, and the wonderfully nourishing environment, not to mention her amazing chocolate mousse! YUM!!!

If you don't want to read the entire review, here's the bottom line: if you're looking for an intimate, country-style, outdoor wedding in Massachusetts, this is the place to have it. Period. I HIGHLY recommend Friendly Crossways!!

I cannot express just how *perfect* Friendly Crossways was for our wedding: from the beautiful grounds to the friendly and accommodating staff, everything was exactly how we wanted it. Mary Helan and her family and staff were more than friendly, flexible, helpful, and generally wonderful, and helped to make our dream a reality.

We had our rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception all on site over the full weekend, from Friday to Sunday. We had guests staying with us Friday and Saturday nights, and used the fire ring both nights as well. Mary Helan catered our rehearsal dinner, both breakfasts, and the reception meal. I ticked off 'wedding cake' in services provided, but we actually did pies instead of cake, which I HIGHLY recommend. Oh, they were delicious!!

It's an amazing deal: for what you'd pay for 5 hours at most venues, you get the whole weekend, plus up to 35 guests to stay over. If you're looking for a charming country wedding, and don't mind sharing bathrooms, it's really the best deal.

We fell in love with Friendly Crossways when we went to visit the venue in fall 2010, and knew immediately that we would be having our wedding there. The property has so many features and is so beautiful: there are beautiful gardens surrounding the house, a giant corn field flanking one side of the property, a fire ring with boulders around it for seats, a beautiful white arbor, fruit trees and a cozy front porch, and a giant boulder with stone steps climbing up it. We had the honor of being married on top of that rock, and it made for a beautiful and unique setting for our ceremony.

The inside of the venue is filled with cozy, eclectic country decor and furniture. Everyone who stayed over enjoyed the accommodations, despite the hostel-style. The decor and layout of Friendly Crossways make it feel more like a home, rather than an impersonal hotel: and that's exactly what we wanted.

Like other reviewers, we used Special Events of New England for our Tent, Table, Chairs, and Linen rentals, and they knew the property and set up the tent early (Thursday) so it was up when we arrived Friday. They were prompt Sunday in taking down the tent and retrieving all the rental equipment. I'd recommend using them if you're doing your reception outside: we hardly had to think about it because of their prior relationship with the owners and knowledge of the property.

We had no problems with anything at all: the charges on our bill were clearly explained before and after the event; the staff felt like family: they really went above and beyond. All of the food was delicious, nothing broke, nobody trashed anything, everyone was super friendly and accommodating... I have nothing but fond memories of the entire weekend!

Bry and I just wanted to thank you again for everything. My great grandmother had her 99th birthday party last night and we saw most of our local family again. Everybody there was still talking about how it was the most beautiful and fun wedding they have ever been to, and how nice it was to be able to enjoy the grass and the fire at leisure.. the food was a hit, as were the quilts of course and the general feel of Friendly Crossways. I can't count the times we were heard "This place is so perfect, how did you find it?" You executed everything so perfectly, and we can't thank you enough for the chocolate fountain suggestion. Every guest that we've talked to was all compliments about the food, the fountain, the atmosphere, and the place in general. I came into my first day of work today, and all of my co-workers were talking about how their honey favor is the best honey they have ever tasted. This was truly my dream wedding. A memorable experience for everybody there.

Oh- and can't forget to thank you for sending Bry and I a tray of your appetizers while we were having our pictures taken. Neither of us had eaten all day and they were beautiful and delicious. What a thoughtful treat.
Thank you a million times over,
    Bryan and Bonnie Dunigan

Friendly Crossways was the perfect venue for our ceremony and reception. We had our ceremony in the outside wedding glade, which provided a beautiful backdrop (stone steps and towering trees), a stage area for our musicians and plenty of room for our guests to be seated. My husband and I have received non-stop compliments on the unique and beautiful natural setting.
We rented a tent to have our reception in the yard at Friendly Crossways, and had tons of fun. It was fantastic to have the reception and ceremony at one location.
Many of our guests enjoyed staying overnight at the Friendly Crossways house. The rustic lodging was a perfect place for friends and family to come together for the weekend. We loved having our rehearsal dinner in the dining room, cozying up oustide at the fire pit and I spent the night in the dorm with all my friends the night before the wedding.
Friendly Crossways staff was super flexible and very helpful. The staff (most of which is a family) worked hard to make sure our special day was VERY special, and I think because they are a family and Friendly Crossways is their home, it has that feeling of an added personal touch that really transferred over to our wedding.

We really wanted a wedding site where we could have the wedding that WE dreamed of... a very relaxed affair with games on the lawn in a beautiful setting and lots of friends helping out all weekend to put together a fun time. Friendly Crossways was PERFECT for that - Mary was very flexible, helpful, thoughtful, and affordable. We didn't want a hands-on wedding planner, or a staff of 20 to cater to our every need. We wanted independence, and Mary provided a wonderful space for us to craft to our own needs. Our wedding, as a result, felt intimately personal, but brides and grooms looking for a traditional wedding where all of the work is done for you might think of considering another site.

I just want to take this opportunity to let you know how pleased we were about our wedding weekend celebration at Friendly Crossways.

The venue was perfect for us and the owners did so much to make sure that it would be ready for the wedding.(Ours was the first wedding of the season).Everything that they promised us was there, including a new firepit that had just been put in the week before. After our rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding, my daughter and her friends were able to sit around the firepit and play music in front of a campfire. The staff was amazing...very unobtrusive, but there when we needed them. Our Friday night guests said that the Saturday morning breakfast was delicious.

We had a few anxious moments on Saturday as there were weird weather patterns swirling all around us, heavy rain in Worcester and in the 128 area suburbs. But, miraculously at Friendly Crossways, the sun was shining and the birds were twittering in the trees. I am not a religious person, but I think this is a truly blessed place.

All of my daughters' friends who stayed for the weekend told us how much they enjoyed the hostel and how comfortable they were there. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to have a mini reunion, as they have not had the chance to all be together since they graduated from high school and college.

At Friendly Crossways my daughter and son-in-law were able to have the wedding that was a true reflection of them.

Friendly Crossways was absolutely spectacular. The place itself is gorgeous and Mary Helan and Keith are incredibly kind and helpful and willing to do whatever they can to make everything run as smoothly as possible and they clearly know what they are doing. Their staff are incredible as well, professional and cheerful and so happy to be helping us celebrate. The things that struck me most though were the little things - we got to Friendly Crossways a little later than most of our guests and I was worrying that no one would know what rooms and beds they were in but no! Mary Helan had already printed out the list we sent her and had it right by the rooms so everyone could find their spot. And during the reception the serving staff turned up with a plate of the appetizers just for us so that we would not miss getting to try the food we had chosen because we were too busy being newlyweds. Mary Helan went out of her way to make sure there was something decadent for everyone to eat, even those with the most difficult dietary restrictions, and everything was fantastic.

We had our wedding at Friendly Crossways at the end of May, and it was an overwhelming success! Mary Helan, and Keith, were the ultimate hosts and were as accommodating, flexible, and supportive as could be. They approached the planning of the event like experienced professionals, but also made us feel like family. They clearly had the success of our event foremost in their mind, and they gave their input and guidance wherever it would be helpful. The venue and grounds are beautiful, and Mary Helan and Keith take great pride in overseeing all of the details. The recommended outside purveyors, like tent supplier and liquor store, also brought a welcome level of experience and familiarity working at Friendly Crossways. Mary Helan is also the head chef, and she provided the food for our reception, and it was delicious! Our guests had nothing but compliments about the food and service, and she really treats the event and guests like a gracious host welcoming folks into her home. She oversees her food staff and makes sure everything runs smoothly, while Keith oversees the general facility staff and makes sure everything is in order, looking and running great. Many of our guests stayed at Friendly Crossways, which really made the whole wedding weekend into an especially relaxed, comfortable, affordable, and extended gathering. It was really a pleasure having the wedding at Friendly Crossways, and the rustic charm, and natural beauty made for a truly special event. We highly recommend Friendly Crossways!

A Dream Wedding Beyond Our Wildest Hopes

A Dream Wedding Beyond Our Wildest Hopes

From the very first time we walked into Farmstead we felt something magical—and the owner promised us “the stars and the moon.” As the mother of the bride, I confess I was hopeful but cautious. But what we got was so much more than stars and a moon… it was a full sky of wonder.

When we booked, we entrusted this venue with our hopes, dreams, and our daughter’s big day. Through months of planning, we saw their commitment, patience, and genuine care. On wedding day, we woke to rain—just the kind of twist no one wants. But the farmstead team was unflappable. They turned something unexpected into part of the magic.

    Every detail shone:
    • The setup was beyond exquisite—dressing rooms for the bride and groom and their party , beautiful, elegant tent thoughtful in every corner, from tables set up and wooden chairs that made guests feel welcomed.
    • The food fram to table delighted everyone—delicious, beautifully presented, and consistently praised by guests.
    • The staff: gracious, professional, warm. They seemed to anticipate needs before anyone asked.
    • The atmosphere: luminous, joyful, full of emotion and laughter.

As the sun peeked out, and the evening unfolded under twinkling lights and an open sky, I looked around and honestly thought: this is one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever seen. Not just in my mind, but in the eyes and hearts of everyone present.

Thank you, Farmstead Team for turning a rainy September day into one of the best weddings of the year. We could not be happier with the memories you helped us create.
    With all our gratitude,
    Ainat Koren

Friendly Crossways was an amazing choice for our intimate, 20-guest, rustic-glam, DIY wedding. The outdoor locations were beautiful in person and stunning in photos, and we especially loved the deliciously fresh, farm-to-table New England food.

Friendly Crossways was the first venue we looked at and we knew pretty much right away that we wanted to get married there. The setting is idyllic and Mary Helan and Keith were instantly friendly and helpful and it was obvious that we could have exactly the wedding we wanted there without too may rules as to what we could and couldn't do. We wanted to have a complete DIY approach and their flexibility allowed us to do that. We used Mary Helan as our caterer for our wedding meal. She was really flexible in what she could provide and worked within our stated budget to perfection. The food was excellent on the day and we really love that she uses her own fruit and vegetables where possible. This adds an authenticity that is so in keeping with the setting. Her staff on the day were absolutely superb and provided flawless service.
Our wedding weekend was absolutely amazing from the time our guests arrived on Friday night to saying goodbye on Sunday. It was so special to be surrounded by family and friends who had traveled so far for the entire weekend. One day would not have been enough and the relaxed environment of Friendly Crossways was the perfect setting for our guests to hang out and enjoy a weekend of love, joy and celebration.
The backdrop of the tress, greenery, flowers, bee hives and general beauty at Friendly Crossways made our wedding photos absolutely stunning.
A weekend that both we and our guests will never forget.

Friendly Crossways was a beautiful and flexible venue for our wedding celebrations! It was the perfect spot to have a very personal ceremony and reception that involved all our friends and family. Mary Helan and Keith were very responsive and helpful during the planning process, suggesting many reasonably priced vendors for all our needs. Everyone raved about Mary Helan's delicious catering with unique wedding pies instead of cake! It was both a special wedding and family/friend reunion weekend, as many of our guests were able to stay on site or very close by. It made it easy to have the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception all in the same place, with time for yard games and bonfire fun in between! It is important to note that the flexibility and ability to personalize the entire wedding weekend also might mean a bit more work on the part of the couple getting married and friends and family involved. We asked friends and family ahead of time to plan to help with set up and clean up, which gave more people a way to feel involved with the wedding celebrations.

Friendly Crossways was the perfect venue for our casual, intimate wedding weekend. We were initially overwhelmed by the details involved in wedding planning, but the setup of FC and the long-time experience of the owners made it much easier to coordinate everything. Having the whole place for the entire weekend allowed us to set up early, spread out, and house our family and friends. We got so many compliments on the uniqueness, beauty, and convenience of the venue, and had minimal decor because the property is so lovely. One owner, Mary Helan, catered an incredible buffet dinner with pies for dessert that our guests all raved about, and was able to accommodate special food needs or tell us when she didn't feel she could do so to her high standards (she offered berries for our vegan and gluten-free friends for dessert, and we chose to get v/gf desserts from specialty bakeries instead but appreciated having the choice). We had dancing, lawn games, and a campfire that the FC staff started for us; and FC also provided us with fridge and kitchen space so we could give our overnight guests a next-day brunch. FC had a great relationship with many of our other vendors - the tent rental place needed few details and were able to set up before we arrived because FC uses them exclusively; our photographer had been there before and loved the site; and the recommended liquor store gave us a 25% discount for being referred by FC. The only downsides were a) it sometimes took a little while to get questions answered by the owners before the wedding, although it was understandable because they travel often; b) tons of mosquitoes after dark; and c) gunshots from the nearby shooting range. We were aware of any other potential areas of confusion in advance, thanks to the clarity of the contract and website, and the meet-and-greet we had with the owners before making a decision! In the end, it was exactly what we envisioned and more for our wedding.

Friendly Crossways was absolutely excellent, a perfect mix of elegance and casual comfort. The area is beautiful, perfect for photographs. There are many outdoor venues around Boston, but they typically include various strict restrictions and time frames. Mary worked with us to create a wedding that truly matched our vision, and was open to numerous ideas and suggestions. Better still was the fact that renting the entire venue for the weekend was easy, which allowed us to continue our celebration well into the night. The atmosphere creates an immediate familiarity, and we felt as though we were friends, not customers.

I have only good things to say about Friendly Crossways. My husband and I had a very low key, not very wedding-y wedding. Friendly Crossways was the perfect place for the vibe we were looking for. We could totally customize the feel of the weekend. And that's sort of the key word right there: "weekend." We rented out the whole site from Friday evening till Sunday evening: beautiful, simple grounds for the party and hostel/farmhouse for overnight accommodations for almost all of our guests! Our wedding boiled down to a fun backyard party with barbeque, lawn games, chill music, and most of our favorite people on earth. And best of all: the party could go all night. S'mores by the awesome stone firepit, followed by an after-party in the basement (aka "subterranean suite") - perfect for the young folks to continue partying while the family went to bed upstairs! It was great to be able to do our rehearsal dinner, ceremony, party, after-party, and (eventual) sleep all in the same relaxed location. Efficient, cost-effective, and exactly what we were looking for. Also, super close to the amazing Kimball Farm - perfect for day-after-wedding mini-golf and ice cream!

Amanda and I had an amazing wedding at Friendly Crossways. Mary Helan, Keith, and their son James did a wonderful job of helping to create a perfect day for us. The site is beautiful and the family is very responsive to your needs on your wedding day.

Leading up to the wedding, there were a couple minor issues that caused us some stress. Mary was very responsive to our concerns. She was reassuring and acted to address these concerns and followed through. Nothing we were concerned about leading up to the event was any sort of issue on the day of the event.

Mary's food is simply amazing. She is very talented and created a delicious vegetarian meal for us while catering to gluten and dairy allergies in our guests. There are many guests still raving about how good the food was, and several of these guests were initially disappointed that the food would not be a more traditional meat-based meal (though Mary does that too! - the vegetarian meal was our choice).

Friendly Crossways was very responsive to needs we did not anticipate. For example, I was planning to play with my band on their stage near the fire circle after the reception had ended, not realizing that this area is not typically illuminated except for the fire itself and torches around the ground. I brought this to Keith, and he said he would take care of it, and he did. It was that easy.

I highly recommend Friendly Crossways for your wedding or event. It's a beautiful place with a laid-back atmosphere. You can focus on your event and trust that the Turner family and their employees are taking care of your needs. Several guests want to return, and there have been talks in my family of making Friendly Crossways a family tradition of some sort. I know I would like to go back at some point!

Friendly Crossways is perfect for an alternative style wedding. It was perfect for my husband and I. We had several friends coming from all over the country and we really wanted to spend more time with them than just the few hours of the reception. At Friendly Crossways you rent the space for the weekend and it includes a number of rooms. The rooms vary in size from singles with a twin bed, doubles with two twin beds, some with full/queen size beds and larger rooms with many bunks. If needed you can fit over 50 people there. The beds all have homemade quilts on them and it is very cozy. There is also a large living room with several couches and a TV. The bathrooms are shared and some people were worried about this, but it was never a problem. There is also a large kitchen you can use while you are there and a giant dining room with several long tables. Our friends we able to come in Friday afternoon, stay at Friendly Crossways and we spent the entire weekend together until Sunday. Even though the location seems remote, it is quite convenient. It is near Route 2, Route 495 and the commuter rail from Boston. We had several guests arrive in Logan and take the commuter rail out. It is a short drive away so however was available from our party picked them up. The site is beautiful for those who love the outdoors! We had our ceremony in the field and a tent for the reception. Friendly Crossways suggest two vendors to work with for rental equipment. You can find the information on their website. We rented a tent, tables, chairs, dance floor etc. Friendly Crossways also provides catering services. During our stay there we hosted a Friday night rehearsal dinner on the outside porch and provided breakfast each day for our guests. The day after the wedding we had a large brunch catered by Mary Helan. She also catered our reception dinner, which was fabulous! Mary Helan was quite flexible in the planning. We decided on a buffet dinner, which even included vegan options for some of my guests. Some of the ingredients even came from the on-site vegetable garden. Many guests said it was the best wedding meal they had eaten. Mary Helan was available for questions at any time during the planning process. She was very helpful in our pre-wedding planning. She was so hospitable during the entire weekend! You can also bring in an outside catering, but I would suggest using Mary Helan. Her food was so fresh and delicious. She also provided serving staff, which was made up of all the neighborhood families. They were all so kind and helpful. We didn't have a videographer, but I believe her husband is available for hire if needed. She also has information on possible photographers if that information is needed. I had a family friend take my photos. The area around Friendly Crossways was beautiful for photos. My husband was a corn farmer in Africa and we had our wedding photo actually taken in the corn fields at Friendly Crossways! Overall we had a memorable wedding weekend. It was also affordable. We ended up spending less than what most people spend for the typical ceremony and reception that are over in a few hours. Our wedding festivities lasted from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon and covered much more than the typical wedding. It was like a destination wedding but a short drive away from my home. If you are looking for the typical wedding, this isn't the place for you. We had the most joyous and magical wedding-weekend at Friendly Crossways!! The property is incredibly beautify, the staff are professional and friendly, the food was absolutely delicious (as well as plentiful), and the farmhouse was perfect for having a two-day sleepover will all our friends!

We really enjoyed the fire-pit on Friday night, having a jam session and eating smores. Their living room and downstairs "ping-pong room" provided super cozy atmospheres for hanging out after dinner. There were a lot of DIY elements of our wedding, and we couldn't have pulled off it with out a lot of help from friends. Do remember to bring plenty of bug-spray for all your guests. We made use of their kitchen to prepare lunch, and the staff were super helpful pointing things out for us. We went with Friendly Crossways for catering the reception and Sunday brunch loved every single bite! The blueberries were mouth watering.

The best part of the venue was having all of our guests together under one roof and how the party smoothly continued after the reception. We got to spends so much quality time will all our loved ones and what more could you really want!

Mary Helen and Keith run a fabulous establishment. If you are looking for a relaxed, fun weekend for a wedding celebration, this is your one and only spot. There is ample space for guests to relax and gather in small or large groups. While the rooms (and bathrooms especially) are very rustic (sloping floors, a bit "camp-y" in feeling), the beds are all very comfortable, and the kitchen is well equipped. Mary Helen catered our Friday dinner for out of town guests and the food was great. She also ran the kitchen and set up the food that our guests brought for the pot luck reception. The base rental fee is the most reasonable you'll find, and even with all the "add on" costs, it was still an incredibly good value for what you get in terms of time and space.

    Newlywed Here!

Two weeks before my wedding, my primary venue canceled on hosting my ceremony for unforeseen circumstances. I was having a melt down, two weeks to plan my wedding?! What venue would even consider helping me out two weeks before the wedding date?? Friendly Crossways did! As soon as I got in to contact with Mary Helen, it was like magic. She was straight forward, professional, and definitely a Godsend. My wedding was saved! And the day of my wedding at Friendly Crossways is a day I’ll never forget. It was absolutely beautiful and well put together for such a short amount of time, but it had every element of a perfect wedding. The beautiful outdoor surroundings and the sun shining through made it all feel like a movie. The seating arrangements were elegant and well put so everyone can comfortably sit and observe. There were lawn games for my guests as they waited (I was an hour late.. oops! This hair wasn’t going to do itself, haha!) and even Mary Helen was present.
All in all, Friendly Crossways is a wonderful venue for nature lovers and couples who love to live in the moment.
I invite any couples looking at this venue to take a look a more options that I did not, there are wonderful packages offered by Friendly Crossways that have more fun and practical measures added that not all venues have. They offer plenty of exciting ways to make amazing memories!

Our fantastic South Indian wedding at Friendly Crossways

We had our Telugu wedding onsite and it was awesome. The groom had his Baraat on a tractor through the parking lot, the ceremony Mandap was on the lawn in the wedding glade surrounded by trees, the cocktail hour spanned various parts of the greenery (imagine lawn games, food, drinks, and everyone lounging in the sun), reception was under a tent adjacent to the ceremony, and it all ended with some late night lounging by the fire circle. While this might have been an unconventional space for a south Indian wedding, it ended up being perfect. Our guests had a lovely time, and we had a great experience planning (the venue owner Mary Helan was wonderful to work with + super adaptable/flexible to all our needs in service of making this a traditional event).

On top of all of that, 30 of our closest friends all stayed at the hostel on Friday and Saturday night. We had so much fun!

I would send anyone to this venue. I highly highly recommend it.

Value: The fact that we were able to book this venue for a whole weekend at the same price that other venues charged for 5 hours made this selection a no-brainer.

Food: You have the option of using Mary as your caterer -- DO IT. Multiple people told me that they absolutely loved the food. She's very flexible, and she uses extremely fresh ingredients. When possible, she uses her own produce from her blueberry bushes, vegetable garden, apple trees, or honey. I especially loved her vegetarian entree - tomato and corn pie with a biscuit crust. Absolutely AMAZING.

Accommodations: Many of my friends and nearly 100% of the wedding party opted to stay at the venue. This was fantastic because we didn't need to worry about people driving anywhere after the reception, instead they just walked into the house to sleep. This allowed for everyone to spend so much awesome, quality time together. While the beds are not luxury by any means, I would describe it as a cross between a camp vibe and a college dorm vibe. My husband and I were originally planning to stay in a cushy hotel after the reception, but we ended up staying at the venue because we just didn't want to leave our friends!

I had my dream wedding at this venue. I could not be more thankful that I found this quirky little place. Thanks Keith and Mary!

Mary Helan and Keith, the owners of Friendly Crossways worked with us for about a year prior to our wedding weekend to develop the details. They were always willing to meet and were in touch with us regularly as our plans developed. From our very first visit, we fell in love with the relaxed atmosphere, the opportunity for guests to stay at the center, and the beautiful grounds surrounding the farmhouse. The only thing we were concerned about were the shots we heard somewhere nearby which turned out to be a shooting range. Mary Helan assured us that she would talk with them about not shooting during our ceremony, and I'm happy to say I didn't hear a single shot all afternoon during our outdoor ceremony or reception. We loved having our rehearsal dinner, afternoon Saturday wedding and Sunday morning brunch right there at the center. Everyone that stayed said they were comfortable. We loved the area on the grounds where we had our ceremony. If you are looking for a special place to have an outdoor wedding, we recommend Friendly Crossways! We will forever have fond memories of our wedding weekend!

    As a guest

As a guest to my friend's wedding, Friendly Crossways was a wonderful experience. The owner and her family were friendly and clear about the rules for the property so the experience was smooth and comfortable. There is a 'dorm' with many twin beds where I got to stay with my friends which was a blast. There were also many private bedrooms. Most importantly it felt like there was an abundance of clean bathrooms! The property is beautiful.

Friendly Crossways is a great, unique spot to have your wedding. The grounds are beautiful for photographs; and the hostel is a great spot to bunch up with all your friends.

For our wedding, my husband and I rented a tent from Special Events of New England, who know the owners pretty well. We were able to create the reception we wanted, while also taking advantage of the grounds for the whole weekend.

We used the hostel for the rehearsal dinner, reception (with outside caterers) and the brunch (with Mary Helan catering) - and we had about 35 guests stay over both nights. It was wonderful because it allowed us to spend the whole weekend with our friends and families and not just one day. Mary Helan and Keith did a wonderful job welcoming us to their hostel, and making us feel like it was our for the weekend. There was no time limit on how late our friends stayed up, and we were allowed to start setting up our tent on thursday (even though we only rented it from friday to sunday.

All in all, it was a great place to spend a wonderful weekend and celebrate our wedding! And def. worth the price (although pay attention to the seperate fees like cleaning, trash, extra guests because it can get kind of confusing!).

Perfect for our clambake, summer-camp-yet-still-classy weekend wedding, however if your wedding dreams include china and white gloved table service, this is likely not the venue for you. Our friends and family had a wonderful time - people are still talking about what a great weekend it was. The accommodations were comfortable, though not entirely private. My one piece of advice - do your best to ensure that one of the two property owners (Mary and Keith) will be around during your event. The support staff was very friendly, but a little lacking in social skills and a "lets-make-it-happen" attitude (both of which I find extremely important when it comes to T-minus-1 day till the Big Day).

When all was said and done, I was happy, my husband was happy, our families were happy and everyone was sore from dancing the night away - the mark of a great wedding.

Friendly Crossways is a unique wedding site. For a fairly low cost, you can spend the weekend there and many guests can stay in private or shared rooms. Although a bit more quirky than a bed and breakfast, this site is great for a couple looking for a place that lets you plan the weekend exactly as you want - there are not rules about timing, minimum number of guests etc. There is a fire pit for a bonfire and the staff can cater any meal or you can cook in their kitchen or have an outside caterer.

I highly recommend using Friendly Crossways for your wedding. It saves all of the trouble of finding separate services and does almost everything you need in one place, with one contact. I know Mary has her hands full with a lot of weddings, but I did find that she was not quick to respond at times. We only had one hiccup: salad was served when I had previously cancelled that course due to time/ we had a lot of apps. Her cooking was spot on though. The guests were all raving about the food and it made us feel so happy, being that we both work in restaurants.
The space is beautiful and would be spring through fall. The house is very nice with a ton of rooms (no A/C). It was great for all of the guests to be able to hang out through out the weekend in the common spaces. For our rehearsal dinner we got to have a home-cooked BBQ meal with everyone which felt just like we were at home. And it was key to have the place for the entire weekend.
Overall, if you want a quaint, family oriented and picturesque New England wedding, this is the place!

The venue is beautiful and relaxing, and the catering was delicious! It was especially nice having the grounds for the entire weekend to enjoy time with family and friends. It was just the fun and relaxed vibe we wanted for our wedding, though we did have to do a lot of the set up, prep, and clean-up work ourselves. But we had expected and prepared for that, and had a large group of friends and family willing to help.
The staff was friendly and helpful with everything in their jurisdiction. We were, however, surprised that many of the hostel rules (such as sleeping requirements, drinking/eating, and general rules of the grounds that seemed more appropriate for young and rowdy patrons paying much less per night) applied to our party of very respectable and well-behaved adults when we had paid a good deal to rent use of the property for the weekend. Just make sure you read all the fine print in your rental and catering contracts, and be aware that all listed rules, as silly as they may seem, will be enforced. And all extra little fees that can possibly be applied certainly will be...
But overall a beautiful place and we're very happy with our experience there! Will definitely recommend to others!
