Stunning photos EVERY time!

Lisa had done family photos for my family back in 2018, and when I got engaged in 2021, I just knew we wanted her to do our engagement photos and our wedding. She is lovely to work with and will help you along each step of the way (even if you're not entirely comfortable in front of a camera). Every time she has blown me away with the images and life she captures in the photos. These are the visual memories of huge life events, and Lisa nails it every time. She captures the beauty of every moment and the feelings we felt on our wedding day are able to be relived over and over again just by looking through the photos. Her work is truly priceless and I would highly recommend her to anyone!

Lisa is the best!

Lisa photographed our wedding this June and we were so lucky to get her! My husband and I both usually duck out of photos and don't love being center of attention; we loved Lisa's photojournalistic and candid style! It really helped take some of the pressure off for us and made us feel so much more comfortable. She took the best care of us and took amazing photos, our family loves all of them! She actually was in the ER the night before the wedding with a concussion and still showed up and did her best (responsibly!) and did a phenomenal job. We originally booked her for an additional hour for a rooftop photo and since it was dreary and cloudy, she refunded us for that. She is incredibly genuine, and you can't go wrong booking with her!

Lisa was great, very professional, so much fun to work with

Lisa is an amazing photographer, she did our engagement photos and wedding photos. A great knack for documentary style unobtrusive pictures. She put us in situations that felt natural and joy forced which made for great authenticity in our pictures. Lots of great in the moment photos!

Lisa Shaw McKenzie is the QUEEN of Wedding Photography

Wow, wow, wow, wow. I cannot recommend Lisa Shaw McKenzie enough. I personally was lucky enough to shoot with Lisa twice, once on my own and then again at my recent wedding.

My email chain with Lisa is something like 60 emails long, and that should tell you something about how committed, detail-oriented, and communicative she is. She dealt with my scattered bride brain for months with the utmost professionally and accommodation, and I am so grateful to her for that. She is truly wonderful.

Lisa made everyone at our wedding feel so comfortable, and her eye is unmatched. She's an artist, and such a lovely person to boot. My husband Jake and I did private vows during our first look, and at first I was nervous to have a photographer there, but then I met Lisa. Lisa made us so comfortable that it was easy. We hardly even knew she was there at times throughout the day - so I know she got all the best shots of us in our most natural states.

Lisa bonded so well with our wedding party and she added an element of fun and enjoyment to our day. She even made our eons-long family photo shoot feel fun and efficient.

We could not be happier with our choice of Lisa as our photographer, and I would recommend her 10 times out of 10. I know our photos will gorgeous and different - not at all the same old wedding photos we've all seen time and time again.

Fun, bright, 70's

Could not ask for better.

Lisa was an amazing photographer! She captured all the moments we hoped to have and we will cherish them forever. She has a wonderful mixture of candid and posed shots. Me and my husband are not "picture people" and Lisa made the whole process so comfortable and natural, which translates to amazing pictures. She took the time to understand what we wanted from our day and worked with us to make it happen. She was professional, responsive, and super fun to have at a wedding. You will absolutely be happy with your choice to hire her for any wedding photography needs.

Couldn't have been better!

Working with Lisa was one of the highlights of our entire wedding experience! We used her for both our engagement photos and day of wedding photos. The pictures she captured were so stunningly beautiful, we love them! Her style is very professional and unobtrusive, which really helped a bride who doesn't prefer being in photos. She is an absolute joy to be around and so incredibly responsive. We will definitely use her to capture our important moments in the future, and we cannot recommend her highly enough!!

A+++ Excellent portraits, delightful experience, hope to use again

Stunning photos of our 25th Wedding Anniversary Vow Renewal on October 5, 2019! I would hire Lisa again in a heartbeat. She captured who we are and our love for one another perfectly. I love every photo she took! Personally, I have never liked having my picture taken but with Lisa that all changed. We had a blast!

Lisa is professional yet so relatable. She's fun and makes it all seem so effortless. If you hire Lisa, I promise you will not be disappointed. The final product is so amazing that it looks like it's straight out of a magazine spread. When I saw Lisa's work, I thought we could never afford her services. That just wasn't true. We were able to view our pictures even sooner than expected which is a bonus! I was so excited when I received the link from Lisa that I immediately called out to my family to come quickly so we could see them together! After we viewed them as a family, I looked through all the photos four more times that night before going to sleep. I still cannot stop looking at them! We are ordering an album to forever enjoy our absolute favorite portraits from that day. Plus a large wall portrait of the two of us as well as a large family portrait. Simply the best

Working with Lisa was the best decision we made! She is just so creative! Our engagement and wedding pictures were unique, fun and flawless, it was like working with our best friend. She was a blast to work with and we couldn't be happier with the results. She's very friendly, easy going person and working with her was so much fun.
She has such a great eye, very easy to work with and open to ideas to incorporate to make any session perfect. We are beyond thrilled with the quality and the attention to detail she put into them. She goes beyond to make sure you are happy. Gorgeous Pictures, Amazing Person

I could write pages about how amazing our experience was with Lisa, but since there are word limits on these reviews I had to write a "short" version. ;)

Trust me when I say - Lisa is AMAZING. You will not regret hiring her, and when your wedding is over you’ll realize all the things that would’ve gone wrong without her guidance. If you are looking for a photographer to truly DOCUMENT your day, Lisa is the photographer for you. The little glances, the toss-your-head-back laughs, the tears in the eyes… Lisa somehow captures all of these moments without you realizing she’s there. She also does some “traditional” photos (ex: family pictures in the church) so you get the best of both worlds – candid, in-the-moment, artistic shots and traditional, posed shots that your parents and grandparents love to hang on the wall.

Here are some of the things we loved about Lisa:
*She truly is a wonderful person - SO easy to talk to and instantly makes you feel like a close friend.
*She always answered e-mails promptly, and when we set up phone consultations she called exactly when she said she would. Lisa is very reliable and easy to communicate with (even if you live out of town like we do).
*She gave a lot of awesome suggestions that helped us plan our wedding, but wasn't pushy at all. We ended up taking her suggestions and we are so thankful! I can honestly say our wedding timeline felt perfect, and Lisa was instrumental in planning it.
*She wasn't just a photographer to us - she was also a wedding planner and a calming presence (reminding us to enjoy the moment, relax, breathe, etc). It's easy to get lost in the details when planning a wedding, but Lisa reminded us to have fun and made it easy to enjoy the day.
*Lisa is incredibly organized - many of our family members commented on how organized she was, and how much they appreciated it. Family pictures were a breeze!
*I hate getting my picture taken, but Lisa made the engagement photos and wedding photos easy. We didn't even notice she was there 95% of the time. No awkward poses and cheesy smiles... just the two of us having fun while she took pictures.
*Let me tell you, Lisa's pictures are gorgeous. She posted a preview of our wedding photos on Facebook and I had multiple people tell me they were the best wedding pictures they'd ever seen. Everyone loved the special moments she caught on camera: my now-husband giving me a little smirk during the ceremony, my dad crying when he saw me for the first time, the 2 year old flower girl stopping to talk to her grandpa while she walked down the aisle, and so many more.
*Lisa goes above and beyond to be helpful, even if it isn't related to wedding planning/photos. We told her about our plans to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon and she's given us lots of tips (since she used to live in Maui). I guess she's part-time vacation planner too!

I really could go on and on about how wonderful Lisa is. If you're struggling to choose a photographer, just look at her reviews, and then look at her responses. So much positivity! Lisa is someone who makes your day brighter because of her kindness. We all know that weddings are stressful, so why not hire a photographer who makes you feel great and is fun to hang out with? It's a no brainer!

I cannot recommend The Bigger Picture photography enough. Working with Lisa was the one of the easiest parts of my wedding process. She was incredibly flexible and accommodating of a busy schedule, and she was really fun to work with! She is very responsive and answered all the questions I had throughout the process.

Both our engagement session and wedding were no less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but Lisa perfectly captured all of the love we felt and fun we had on those days. Her photo-journal style of photography really allowed my husband and I to really be ourselves while she documented the day. She has an eye for great shots. She also was really great about capturing shots we saw on Pinterest and wanted to attempt.

In addition to the amazing photos, Lisa was a great person to have around on my wedding day. She was a calming presence on what turned out to be a chaotic day full of drunk bridesmaids and A LOT of competing family personalities. She captured the best of everything, and I'm so thankful she was there!

Lisa was more than AMAZING! Nothing about my wedding was easy! She made things so simple for me and kept me informed (and reassured everything was gonna be just fine when I was not so sure it was) Lisa kept in contact with me the entire time! From the moment she stepped into the crazy boathouse we were all getting ready at, she was like family! I gave her very little direction of what I wanted, but she somehow just knew! She is GREAT at what she does and I would highly recommend her for any sort of photography needs.

The Bigger Picture was absolutely amazing. Lisa was phenomenal to work with. She was great with our children, and very friendly with our family. Most importantly, she was practically invisible during the ceremony and during candid shots. She stayed every second of our reserved time, and utilized every minute. When Beth and I started looking for a photographer for our wedding, I knew that I wanted someone who could see the big picture of the composition, not just the portraits of the people in the pictures. I also wanted the photographer to be assertive (because we have a large combined family), nurturing and kind (because we HATE having photos taken), and someone who would know when to listen to our requests and also know when to make some of the decisions based on their experience. Miraculously, we found such a person in Lisa. Our engagement photos took place at our home. Lisa was great with our barky dogs and quickly made us feel at ease. Laughter and sincerity were both present during the photo shoot and were reflected in the photos. This “magic” continued to our wedding day. Lisa was able to roll with the changing weather and the close to 50 family members who all needed to be corralled. Lisa was able to capture our day in a way that told our story through candid photos and images that radiated love. I would recommend Lisa to anyone who is looking for a photographer who has an artistic flair, a bigger picture perspective, and the flexibility to capture magic whatever the day may bring.

Having Lisa photograph our wedding was the best decision we could have possibly made! From the day we met her for our engagement session to the final picture she took at our wedding, she took the time to get to know us and what we were hoping to capture through photographs. I was part of a wedding party that use the Bigger Picture Photography. They were outstanding. The picture quality is amazing. They spent time moving and adjusting even the smallest things in each pose to make sure the pictures turned out perfect.

Lisa is so great! She did our engagement photos as well as our wedding photos. She's not afraid to pose you if needed and she always caught the light just right. I'm so happy with how she was able to truly capture the emotion on the day of our wedding. Especially because I didn't even notice she was there! I'd recommend her to anyone. She's professional, available by email, answered my 1,000 questions I of course had. Talk about fantastic! Lisa is a very special individual and amazing photographer. Weddings are full of chaos and unpredictable things happen. Lisa didn't even break a sweat when people were scrabbling all over the place or literally sweating from the heat during our outside shoot! She was professional, punctual, and FUN! We selected a package that included an engagement session, and that really helped my husband and I feel comfortable in front of the camera. She has a photojournalistic style where many photos are candid, but she gave direction and ideas for poses to get started.

The engagement pictures were well done but I wasn't so pleased with how I looked in them, so having the engagement session as a "trial" really helped me be more aware of how I composed myself for our wedding day pics. Our wedding pics were phenomenal. I loved how both myself and my husband looked in them, and even some family members who are not particularly photogenic looked great in them! The posed family pictures were just as good as the organic, observed moments she captured. She managed to turn personal, trivial exchanges into beautiful snapshots, such as when my husband was showing me a cut on his hand, or when our nephew was touching the embroidery on my dress.

We also have an aunt that is the "designated photographer" at family events with her own camera, and Lisa handled that with grace and professionalism. Our aunt kept setting up shots and telling people to get together and pose during the reception, and I noticed Lisa would take the opportunity to snap photos of other people enjoying themselves, or taking ring detail shots instead.

She was always prompt and responsive to emails or texts, and was very easy going, and sweet. I did not enjoy wedding planning, and she made the photography part of planning very easy to manage. I would've preferred to have a more low-key, private celebration, but ultimately decided to have a wedding because my husband wanted one and for our families to enjoy. When we got the sneak peek from Lisa, I was so pleased with how they came out that it made me feel like the wedding was definitely worth it.

Words can't express how happy I am with The Bigger Picture Photography. We couldn't be happier with our photographer choice! From first meeting Lisa, we knew we made the right decision. She was laid back, fun, easy to talk to, and most importantly, she knew photography. Her experience was obvious as we found ourselves consulting her when finalizing timing and details for our big day. When we were planning our simple, low key wedding, several of my married friends said "Whatever you do, get a good photographer. The pictures are the only thing that lasts." I'm so glad I took their advice and went with the Bigger Picture Photography. Lisa was so great to work with. We live on the other side of the state so we didn't get to meet ahead of time (just coordinated everything on the phone), but in no time I felt comfortable and felt she "got" us. Lisa was easily the toughest & easiest wedding decision we made. My husband & I met with at least 3 photographers & communicated with several more. I fortunately have a bridesmaid who is trained in photography & showed her side by sides of all the prospective candidates. She said that Lisa was hands down better then any of the others with lighting, composition, and quality edits. When we met with Lisa we also found her level of professionalism to be above all the rest & her responsiveness to be extraordinary. Because I value these traits we decided she was our best choice. My partner found Lisa Shaw online in our search for a gay-friendly photographer. She was willing to put together a custom package for us at a reasonably low price that include just 5 hours of coverage the day of and printing rights with a DVD of the photos. We got our final photo DVD about a month after the ceremony.

She was respectful of us and the rules of our church regarding photography. She was not obnoxious and did not do a lot of posing and people placement. The few portrait style photos that were taken were fantastic - definitely the best portraits of us that I've seen. Her style is more photojournalistic though, and she is very good at taking photos of real moments, unobtrusively. She was nearly invisible to us and did not inconvenience us or our guests at all.

The only thing that missed my expectations in any way (and it's pretty minor) was that the finished photos only included a single photo of our kiss at the end of our ceremony, and even that one photo was a bit blurry. I can only figure it caught her off guard somehow although it was basically in the same spot in our ceremony as any other.

We hired Lisa for our engagement session first, and immediately after the shoot decided to hire her for our wedding instead of choosing a local photographer (wedding was in the U.P.) which had been our original plan. Working with Lisa is AMAZING, she is so sweet and laid back, it was like hanging out with a friend that just happened to be taking our pictures. And the pictures... I don't have words to describe just how beautiful our engagement and wedding photos turned out, she is an expert at capturing wonderful moments on film, with unique angles and amazing color quality.

She is the BEST, hands down. The only problem you'll have with Lisa's pictures is deciding which ones to print/display!!! ;-)

I would highly recommend The Bigger Picture Photography for any event. Lisa Shaw was a pleasure to work with. My wife and I both felt that she was genuinely interested in getting to know us and our personalities during our consultation and throughout the whole experience. I really wanted natural, candid photos, so Lisa's photo-journalism style was perfect for us. The poses she designed were very natural and reflected our own styles, and the candid shots of our friends and family were stunning.

It was also important to me that we found a photographer that was open and affirming toward same-sex couples. It meant a lot to me that Lisa was very accepting and supportive. She also understood my gender expression and designed poses for me that matched this. This was all done without ever discussing it, which made the whole experience feel very natural. I would recommend Lisa to anyone!

The first meeting was very easy and went well, Lisa, though based in Grand Rapids, came to the Detroit area for everything we wanted with no travel costs. (she will also go to Hawaii at no extra cost too!) The engagement session (1 hour) went well. Lisa sets up great shots but her best work is in capturing candid moments. She caught some things that we didn't even know we did! In prepping for the big day Lisa impressed upon us the need to stay on schedule leaving the impression of a bit of a time Nazi. However, starting in the morning when she and a partner showed up at our individual dressing rooms to take the "getting ready" photos it was like they were not even there. aside from the few necessary posed photos she caught every memorable moment of the day / night and never once pressed us on time. I know its our wedding and she works for us, I was very impressed by her patience with our 5yr old ring bearer and 3yr old flower girl. She gave great direction when needed and had a great eye at all other times. The most impressive thing to me was that she was essentially invisible all night. We got our preview photos within a week and the full discs soon after. After hearing wedding horror story's one after the other regarding pictures, My wife and I couldn't be happier with Lisa Shaw!... well, maybe had we been able to take advantage of the Hawaii thing! LOL

Meeting Lisa was a beautiful, beautiful thing. I immediately loved her and I felt like I had just met a new friend. Looking for a wedding photographer seemed daunting, and you get overwhelmed with sticker shock when seeing the prices of other photographers. Lisa and The Bigger Picture Photography were SO reasonable and I was thrilled to find out that there was an amazing photographer out there for brides-on-a-budget. And her work? Brilliant. She's beyond talented, creative, artistic and she's got an amazing eye for detail. And she snaps her camera, capturing these beautiful moments going on during your day, when you're not even aware that she's there snapping the camera. My now-husband always "mocked" my posing-abilities. He was really looking for candid pictures and for pictures that were actually capturing the moment as they happened. And he loved, loved, loved Lisa's work in doing this. When we saw our engagement photos, we both looked at each other, beaming with these huge smiles. Lisa managed to capture "us"...she captured who we are, and really put together awesome photos that were like a storybook...every picture told a story, capturing an emotion, capturing a moment. And the absolute same thing rings true for our beautiful wedding day. And don't worry if you still like the posed photos and if you want those pictures too, especially with your wedding party and family...Lisa does a great mix of both. She'll provide you those posed photos, but she captures even those with a creative and unique edge, making them look artistic and beautiful. Her fun personality and awesome energy will be the first thing you notice, and you'll be so happy that you have someone like her with you on your special day. She's so professional and organized about every detail. Quite simply, she's the best and I would recommend her, and her stunning work, to anyone and everyone who wants the best.

My wife and I live in Kansas City and planning our wedding in MI made for a lot of phone calls and emails with vendors. When selecting our photographer we talked to a lot companies that we thought could be options. When talking to Lisa with The Bigger Picture she was very organized, genuine and just down to earth. Lisa and my wife talked a handful of times prior to choosing her service, the last few phone calls they had I thought she was talking to a friend she had known for years. When the day finally came Lisa had pre-planned a lot of the shots; from the hotel, ceremony, outdoor and venu. Her planning really showed and captured those unique and perfect angle photos. She found spots throughout town that would go well with the colors of the bridal party. She even had our preview pictures sent to us while we were still on our honeymoon. Nothing better than being able to relive that day while on the beach and a drink in hand. All and all Lisa is very skilled photographer and so happy how our photos turned out.

I liked Lisa from the start! I had interviewed 4-5 different photographers for our wedding and as soon as I spoke to Lisa we clicked! She was upbeat, friendly, and genuine. Leading up to our wedding she was also very organized and thorough. Lisa was able to scout out our photo route for between the ceremony and reception(I requested shots around downtown GR). We had limited time and it was nice for her to have it all planned out for us.
The wedding day was so smooth and I felt at ease knowing that Lisa would capture all of our great moments!
We received a preview of our wedding pictures while Andy and I were still on our honeymoon, we could not believe how amazing they turned out and how quickly Lisa was able to post them for us!

Lisa was AWESOME!!! totally exceeded our expectations. Our guests were raving when they saw the photos! Many of them want to order prints from the day. From the very start, Lisa was incredibly enthusiastic about our wedding. From the very start she was willing to work with us to get a custom package that fit our needs and budget. The day of the wedding, she had all the photographs already planned out. The picture taking went smoothly and quickly.

Afterward, we had a preview within a week, and the photographs look amazing. Not only was she friendly to work with, but her incredible skill as a photographer shows in her work. I would quickly recommend her to any person I knew getting married in the Grand Rapids Area!

Lisa is truly an artist! She has a great eye which ensures that not only her subject is beautifully portrayed but the background enhances each photo. I am incredibly picky about photographs, but with Lisa's work, I have a hard time narrowing down my favorites. Lisa's photos each captured a part of our wedding story and my husband and I will cherish them always. We would recommend Lisa to anyone who wants stunning photographs to preserve life's most precious moments!

Lisa does an amazing job! She is extremely artistic and takes beautiful pictures. She also works quickly which accommodated my short attention span for posing.

The Bigger Picture made life easy and took some amazing pictures at our wedding. They deserve the 5 star rating and id refer them to anyone looking to have a good time and capture it. Not to mention they kept my groomsmen and I on schedule.

The Bigger Picture Photography is a fantastic service provider. Lisa is extremely helpful, flexible, accommodating and professional. She took the most beautiful pictures of our wedding. From the moment I contacted her, she walked us through the process, met with us (long distance) to consult and get to know my husband and I as a couple and our needs. Lisa is the MOST amazing photographer. She is very professional, a wonderful artist, and just a great person. Lisa and The Bigger Picture Photography are amazing! Having a great photographer for our wedding was my number one priority. I am so incredible happy with how it turned out. I originally thought that I wasn't going to be able to afford a photographer but Lisa was willing to work within our budget and I ended up with the most beautiful photos of our special day. I litterally look through our pictures a couple times a week (our 2 year anniversary is next week!). Having them available on a disc is great becuase they were easy to download and I can pull them up anytime I want.

This was a great experience, she was able to direct the large rowdy group we had, got great shots of the toddler age kids, and i hardly notice her at all as she captured amazing candid shots!!!

Lisa captured some great moments at my best friends wedding. She was very professional and patient with the large wedding party. She really captured the love and the personalities of both the bride and the groom. I would definitely recommend.

Lisa provided us with a lot of unique photos of our wedding. There are shots of reflections in mirrors, and shots through windows which are really interesting and artistic. She did a good job of using the varied setting of our venue to give us many different backgrounds for our photos. Turn around time for delivery of our package was quick. We chose the package with a second shooter, which was worth it for us, especially for our ceremony, because Lisa planned for her to take shots of it from a balcony, which we love. Our engagement photos are very nice as well

Lisa did an excellent job with our informal wedding. We wanted more of a photo-journalist sytle of pictures, and Lisa definitely delivered what we were looking for. She was very responsive to our wishes and had great ideas for where to take us for great backgrounds for our pictures.

The Bigger Picture had one of the best portfolios I found during my intense search and Lisa's style fit ours. Sticker shock for cost of good photographers is an understatement but Lisa worked with us and given the quality of her portfolio it was well worth it. We love the portraits and we love the candid shots of our day. I'd love to work with her again.

Lisa is so sweet and professional! Anytime I had a question, she would get back to me right away. She did an awesome job on our engagement photos and save the dates and our wedding photos are so stunning. She went above and beyond on our wedding day and stayed until the very end of the night which was not expected. The only thing that I wish was done differently was to have more "posed" pictures of me and my husband smiling. Her approach is much more natural and photojournalistic which is great, but it is nice to have those stereotypical posed photos as well :) I wouldn't hesitate to hire Lisa again and would recommend her in a heartbeat.

She was able to keep our Rowdy group together. Great pictures of the kids even though they were uncooperative sometimes. She was great at directing traffic during group shots and individuals. Then during all the candid shots I never saw her, yet she captured every moment we would have wanted!

Lisa was so much fun to work with! She always responded to my questions or concerns in a timely manner and was very easy to talk to. Her outgoing personality made taking photos that much more fun. Her assistant Caedy was also amazing. I do wish that we had more time to take posed photos of the bridesmaids but the photos we have seen so far have been absolutely breathtaking! Our videographer did struggle to get certain shots because she moved around so much but other than that, I have nothing but amazing things to say about Lisa and The Bigger Picture!

The Pros:
The photographs came out very nice and are of high professional quality. The camera equipment and editing/post-processing abilities are top notch. The schedule of consultations and the day-of was all very smooth and there was zero issues with timing. The artistic eye brought to the photography was very cool and made for some special photos that stand out beyond the common wedding photos you might get from other vendors.

The Cons:
This photography service is definitely on the expensive side compared to other vendors/options available. Also, there's not a lot of flexibility which made the experience feel awkward/impersonal at times. There's restrictions on when and what photographs you receive which we were told was because of "bad past experiences with other customers". Also, they strongly prefer to NOT have a videographer present which we did as a close family member insisted on us having one and paid for it. A touch more flexibility and a more gentle approach to communication could've made the experience better.
