We are so grateful to have had Emily as our celebrant. From our initial call with her to the ceremony itself to now even after our wedding her presence has always been warm and genuine.
We initially reached out to Emily nervous that our ceremony would be over too quickly and would feel like a formality. We’re not big into vows and had no desire for a lot of rituals that we’ve seen at weddings. They just didn’t feel authentic enough to us. Add to that the fact that we had actually been married at the courthouse two years prior and we weren’t sure how things were going to turn out.
Our hope was that by working with someone who got to know us as she did that they could help us discover the intimate celebration that we wanted. And that’s exactly what happened.
We started by answering some questions and giving the history of our relationship. It was nice to talk through it without feeling like I had to be the one telling a story. And that also went for talking about how I felt about my wife. It was nice to just share how I felt with no expectations, and of course I had a lot to say because of that.
Our ceremony was heartfelt and was a lovely reminder of our time together and full of affirmations for how we made one another feel. It allowed us to invite our guests into the ceremony. Emily’s delivery and guidance allowed us— two shy people, to really take in the moment and to not worry so much about being the center of attention in front of our friends and family. We felt completely at ease and full. And our friends and family commented on how sweet the moment was.
We are overjoyed that we had the honor of having Emily as our celebrant. She truly made our ceremony.

Working with Emily was a dream. From the very start she was communicative, clear with expectations, deadlines, and dates, and answered every question we threw at her - many of which weren’t specifically about the ceremony but about wedding procedure in general. Working with Emily felt like a collaboration and we ended up with a unique ceremony that perfectly captured our personalities. In addition to asking the right questions before writing our ceremony, she was very open to suggestions about how to incorporate specific anecdotes that were important to us. She was flexible and rolled with the punches on the wedding day, dealing with the unexpected (ex: rain!) with ease. We ended up with a beautifully crafted ceremony that we are still getting compliments about 3 months later - I can’t tell you how many people have said it was one of the best ceremonies they’ve ever witnessed. Our wedding day would not have been the same without Emily there. Thank you!!! -

Hiring Emily Sterling as our Officiant was THE single best decision we made for our wedding, hands down. There were multiple times throughout the process where we were like, “damn, she’s good!” From our first meeting to rehearsal to day-of, Emily was warm, funny, intentional, thoughtful and truly a skilled leader and guide. She walked us thru writing our vows and helped us put into words how we felt about each other in a way we could not have done on our own or with a friend officiating. So many people said our ceremony was "very us" and that it was one of the best wedding ceremonies they had experienced. We laughed, we cried, we were in the moment and our wedding meant something special. She taught us the phrase “collective effervescence” and we felt it in the room that day. We’re so grateful for Emily and we fully recommend her to anyone wanting a heartfelt and meaningful experience while crossing the threshold into marriage.

Working with Emily was a dream!
She captured exactly what we wanted in our ceremony. It was funny, sweet, and genuine. Our religious family didn't even notice the exclusion of religious elements. The humor was so us. We Rick rolled our guests and it was glorious.

We couldn't have asked for a better wedding officiant than Emily for our elopement in the North Cascades. From the moment we met her, she made us feel like old friends, and her dedication and attention to detail throughout the entire process were truly exceptional.
Emily went above and beyond to make our special day even more memorable. She spent a considerable amount of time getting to know us and understand our love story, ensuring that every aspect of the ceremony was personalized and meaningful. The ceremony she crafted was nothing short of beautiful, thoughtful, and touching – it felt like she had known us for years.

The class was truly wonderful, fostering a warm and supportive environment where we could reminisce about our special moments and rediscover the reasons why we fell in love. I can’t rate Emily highly enough! It was like getting married by a friend, Emily made our ceremony so fun, so intimate, so personal, it was so special because of the words she said and the way she made us feel. Boy, where do I begin! Emily is officially one of my favorite humans on this planet. She came highly recommended by our queer friends who eloped in 2020, and I'm so grateful we chose to work with her. Rooted and wild is the perfect name for what she does! I craved and appreciated her approach to duality, integrating equal parts serious and lighthearted moments into our ceremony so seamlessly, it felt like a dream come true. Her energy and guidance gave me permission I didn't know I needed to be truly present. It's such a gift, during the throes of wedding planning - one of the most important, nerve-wracking moments of your life - to feel truly taken care of. And she does it all with an air of clarity, calmness, and confidence - all I had to do was follow her lead. But then she also managed to follow ours? Best of both worlds, I swear!
Especially when it came to writing our vows - her private one-on-one workshop with feedback following the first couple drafts was a true godsend. I would recommend her to anyone, especially any queer couple, looking for a ceremony that accurately reflects the reverence and beauty of your love. She's the best, hands down. Collaborating with Emily to bring our goofy personalities into our ceremony was an absolute delight! She made the process SO easy and FUN!

Can't recommend Emily enough! Rooted & Wild was recommended by our planner, but we were honestly a little hesitant. Our wedding budget had been adding up quickly and we considered asking a family/friend to officiate. But we are SO glad that we were able to work with Emily, 200% worth the investment!
Timewise, the ceremony is such a small piece of the wedding day, but I feel like working with Emily helped make it a focal point in the best way. She helped us make everything very intentional, and spent so much time putting together a ceremony that was representative of us. We didn't go into the planning process with a super clear idea of what we wanted the ceremony to entail, so Emily brainstormed with us and offered suggestions so we could piece together the perfect flow. There was no pressure to do things a certain way, and we are both so happy with how it all turned out. Emily was easy to work with throughout and she helped make things fun and stress-free. Creating the ceremony with her was definitely a highlight of our overall wedding planning process! -

Made our intimate ceremony that much more special!
From start to finish, Emily was a dream to work with. We had an intimate ceremony on a mountain side at sunrise. An early morning coupled with a hike… trust us when we say she’s game for any adventure!
In the many months of planning leading up to our elopement, Emily was fantastic at helping us develop a theme for our ceremony. She asked questions we hadn’t even thought about, was a great listener, and really had a knack for understanding what we wanted the ceremony and experience to feel like. She is incredibly organized, detail oriented, and thorough, which helped take the guess work out and ease some of the inevitable stress that comes with planning a wedding (no matter how small)! You can be sure that she takes as much pride in her work at creating a truly personalized ceremony as you do in creating the perfect wedding.
Emily never felt like a stranger to us at any point in the planning process or wedding. Her energy and enthusiasm for our marriage made us feel like we had known her since the start of our relationship. She also offered great guidance with vow writing, which can be an intimidating process.
In every way, the custom ceremony that Emily created and facilitated blew us away. Her words brought so much love, truth, and even laughter into the moment. We couldn’t have dreamed of a better ceremony and Emily sent us onward as a married couple with numerous ways to remember and commemorate the special moment for years to come. We would wish for nothing less for anybody else and that’s what makes her the ultimate recommendation.

Weddings are supposed to be about the union of two people coming together and all the love that surrounds them through friends and family, celebrating their journey together, but it's easy to lose yourself in the mires of wedding planning (this color for this, that frame for that, that appetizer and that drink, etc.). It's also easy to get trapped in planning hell and start losing what it's all about...but Emily is the type of person that won't let that happen to you. She understands the importance of planning but also understands all the importance that goes into make the wedding ceremony about the most important thing, the two individuals. At least, that's what she made us feel. She helped us with our journey in vow writing and truly helped memorialize our lives together in her beautiful introduction/celebration of us. She's someone that feeds off of your excitement, your love, and your energy and the more you give her, the more she gives you back 10x fold. We truly enjoyed working with her and by far she was our favorite person to work with. She responds quick, communicates well, and is truly there for you in your moment. We'll never forgets the words that she spoke that day. Still brings us to joyous tears. -

Stress free, heartfelt ceremony
We feel so incredibly lucky to have had Emily recommended to us as a celebrant for our wedding day. Prior to the wedding, Emily met with us to get to know us on a deeper level. Warm, inclusive, and a sorcerer with words
I can’t even begin to praise or thank Emily enough for such a phenomenal service and ceremony. Even before we hired her, it was immediately clear how thoughtful, accommodating, patient, and well-organized she is.
With her helpful questionnaires and vow writing class, my fiancé and I felt so at ease and connected with her in the development of our ceremony & vows.
Her warm personality is clear and present in her storytelling. The actual ceremony was perfectly magical, and it fit our vibe to a T. We had absolutely no anxiety on the day-of; she was ready to go at sunrise (and was completely forgiving when we were 15 min late), and we were even sad to see her go once it was over.
We came into this partnership as clients, but left with a special kinship.

Emily made our wedding ceremony the most magical moments of our lives. We cannot express enough how thoughtful, loving, and sentimental she crafted our ceremony to be. She added in so many personal touches (like our tradition of Rock Paper Scissors to decide our vow order) to make the ceremony special to us and our love. She spoke beautifully about our lives and told our love story in the most eloquent way- and made sure to slip in some laughs when needed! Every single guest shed happy tears and even our vendors told us they did, too! Since getting on a video call with her, we knew she was the person we wanted to marry us- my now wife pulled herself off camera to mouth “book her now!!” as we were talking to her. She has a calming and gentle presence that translates through all interactions- which is definitely appreciated during the wedding planning process! She is such a genuine & kind soul and we enjoyed working with her on a personal level as well- she makes you feel like family from the start!
Her vow class & questionnaire was incredibly helpful to get our thoughts out on the page & focus on the promises we wanted to make to each other. We agreed that our vows wouldn’t have been nearly as good without her help, revisions, & friendly reminders to keep us on track. She helped us stay organized and accommodated all of our needs.
Our guests couldn’t say enough, we can’t say enough, & we guarantee you won’t be able to say enough! If we had to do it all over again, we would choose Emily every time. We can say with the utmost confidence that working with her will be the best decision you make for your wedding. Nothing but love for her 💖 -

I do not have enough words to explain how amazing it was to work with Emily. From day one, she really took the time to get to know me and my partner, our love story and what's important to us. To honor my partner's Celtic heritage, Emily did a handfasting ritual for us as well! Emily was simply amazing. She helped make our day perfect and not only helped us through our ceremony but with so much more. Amazing Celebrant!
My husband and I recently celebrated our 10 year anniversary and knew we wanted to renew our vows to commemorate where we've been and how far we've come in our relationship. Emily was exactly the person we were looking for to create a beautiful, thoughtful, personalized ceremony for us. She met with us via zoom to get to know us and our story. Her prompts during the planning process were so helpful in getting both of us to deeply reflect on our relationship over a decade of being together. That's a lot of content! And somehow, she created a thorough, comprehensive ceremonial script that perfectly represented each of us and our journey together. She offered helpful feedback on our vow writing as well and was always available to answer questions. Our renewal ceremony was redemptive, healing, and so authentic to us. It's a day we will never forget. I'm forever grateful to Emily for holding space for us and helping create the most beautifully meaningful ceremony! -

Absolutely amazing/spectacular/wonderful
Emily of Rooted and Wild is an absolute dream. We worked with her on a small wedding with family that was supposed to take place in March of 2020. When we had to postpone our ceremony due to the shutdown, she was so sweet to move our ceremony out a year and was incredibly supportive and flexible during a very difficult time (despite already having crafted the most amazing ceremony and it being just days before our wedding). When March 2021 rolled around and we had cut down our wedding from 40 to just 4, she was a dream to work with at tailoring a ceremony that incorporated family and friends who couldn't be there with us in person. She gave us so many suggestions to make our intimate wedding feel larger than life and make us and our families feel so special. She truly couldn't have captured our love any better and helped us create the most beautiful, intimate, and joyful ceremony. My husband and I had been together for 11 years before we got married and the ceremony she crafted seemed to perfectly capture every moment of our time together and reminded us of moments that we had not thought about in ages. Our wedding was on the Washington coast and in typical Olympic National Park in March fashion it was windy and chilly on the coast but Emily was nothing but smiley, bubbly, and full of joy and excitement for us. She was also unfazed by our little furry family member who borked through nearly the entire ceremony. If we ever do a vow renewal in the future she will be the first person we reach out to! We are so thankful to have worked with her and we recommend her to absolutely anyone looking to create a ceremony which captures every part of your love and personalities. You will not be disappointed! -

Despite having such a short time frame, Emily immediately got to work. She met with us over Zoom guide us through her process and gave us a questionnaire to fill out about us, our values, the history of our relationship, etc. It was actually really fun to fill out! Emily took our answers and crafted a beautiful and completely original ceremony tailored exactly to our wants. With a few minor tweaks, our ceremony was ready for showtime.
On September 2, Emily (fully masked) met us along the Columbia River Gorge at sunset to officiate (from six feet away) our tiny outdoor ceremony. It was windy, gorgeous, and without a doubt one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. I fully credit Emily for being such a thoughtful and capable guide, not to mention in a year like 2020. Cannot recommend her officiant serves highly enough. Also looking forward to her upcoming mindfulness practice in December! -

Okay, so let’s start from the beginning. We have had our wedding planned for almost 2 YEARS(in Kauai). Everything set and almost paid for. This year Covid hit, so we checked on our flights daily and venue, everything seemed to be fine and as I checked in religiously with the venue and our airlines they said everything looks fine. Well, about a month ago we received a Call from our flight and venue saying they had cancelled our reservation and flights. So our entire wedding was back at SQUARE 1. So the first thing Chris and I did was search for our officiant and so many people couldn’t and wouldn’t do a last minute elopement, luckily someone referred me to Emily the owner of (rootedandwildpdx) where she literally responded back to me within MINUTES. With positive energy and the will to get it done no matter the obstacles that we may have to face. She spent hours on hours to make sure our wedding was perfect from the beginning to the end. She taught us how to write our vows and helped us make sure the vibe of the wedding was a bit spooky as we wanted. She helped us find our awesome people to help us capture our moments as well. I can’t really say I planned my last minute wedding when honestly it was all Emily and she made sure that it was EXACTLY as we wanted. She did not leave any detail out. Also to mention my family ABSOLUTELY loved Emily and my family do not like much people but they loved her energy and who she is as a person. Not only did she become our officiant but also became a friend. We are VERY thankful for everything she has done for us! I will now refer everyone and anyone I know to Rootedandwildpdx wether they are local or not cause Emily is AMAZING! I would pick to have Emily as our officiant than have a wedding in Kauai any day.

What a wonderful experience! My fiancé and I went through a private vow writing workshop + received some ceremony guidance and it was incredibly helpful and inspiring. My husband and I attended Emily’s Vow Writing Workshop this spring in anticipation of our 10th anniversary vow renewal ceremony. I didn’t write my own vows when we were married, and I was very nervous to write my own this time around - how could I possibly capture everything about our marriage in words? But with Emily’s guidance, examples, and encouragement, I was able to speak from my heart and express my love and devotion. Not only did Emily help me write my amazing vows, but she also officiated our ceremony. We had to make adjustments to our original plans to due COVID-19 and social distancing rules, but she was flexible, accommodating and wrote us a beautiful ceremony that was the absolute perfect way to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We highly recommend Emily to anyone who is looking for a celebrant for their ceremony. She worked well with us and with our planner, and her communication was great throughout the process. Her empathy, kindness and professionalism reduced our stress level and made it really easy to work with her.
We originally planned a March 2020 wedding with friends and family, most of whom would be traveling to Seattle from the US and Canada. Because we wanted to write our own vows but couldn’t attend Emily’s vow writing workshop in person, Emily set up a 1:1 video chat and walked us through the process of vow writing.
Emily wrote a thoughtful and beautiful ceremony. And then she had to rewrite it when we canceled our ceremony and had mid-March Covid elopement. And what really made it special was that she secretly worked with our planner and family to gather notes from family members who could no longer attend. She included some of those well wishes in the ceremony, and had all of them printed out so we could read them all later that evening.
The ceremonies she wrote fit really well with what we had planned, and also for the elopement that actually happened. She included a lot of meaningful things that she had gathered from our conversations and from the questionnaires we completed.
Our elopement was a couple weeks earlier than our originally planned ceremony, and Emily was flexible and still traveled to Seattle so that she could be our celebrant. We were both anxious because of everything that was going on, and Emily’s support throughout relieved some of the burden and stress we were feeling.
The week after the ceremony, Emily confirmed that she completed the marriage license and sent it back to the county office. Within a few days, it was officially recorded and we were able to get our certified copies. -

Emily beyond stunned us with her custom ceremony script and did an amazing job with the execution. My husband and I each filled out a questionnaire and told her what kind of a vibe we wanted for the ceremony. She crafted a very thoughtful, personal, and touching speech that made us all laugh and cry. It was perfect and she was so fun to work with. She's got a wonderful energy about her which shines through in her officiating. I also highly recommend taking her vow writing workshop! We knew when we decided used to elope that choosing the right person to marry us would be really important. We didn’t want a quick, generic ceremony and after some Googling I knew a celebrant was the way to go. I was really nervous about choosing a celebrant as we were planning everything from so far away which meant there would never be an opportunity to meet in person before our wedding day.
As soon as I spoke to Emily, I knew I’d found the right person to marry us. Throughout the whole process, her communication was wonderful. She always got back to me promptly with any questions I had, and gave us some great ideas to incorporate into our ceremony. She made everything easy and wrote a ceremony that truly reflected our journey as a couple and struck the tone we wanted.
We are so grateful for her support and presence on our big day. My husband got a nosebleed right as we were about to begin the ceremony. Emily didn’t let this phase her and delivered a wonderful ceremony despite him having a tissue stuck up his nose the whole time! We met Emily at a small bridal expo and within 5 mins of talking to her we knew she was the ONE! Emily is so personable, not to mention hilarious.
It was such a pleasure working with her, our favorite vendor. She was so helpful with our personal vows and ended up creating the perfect ceremony for us. She listened to what we wanted and helped collaborate on parts we weren't sure about. I never had an issue getting in contact with her and the whole process was so easy, even with some last min edits to my vows the night before the wedding.
After the wedding we had quite a few guests ask us where in the world we found her because she was absolutely fabulous. I couldn't have imagined a better celebrant for my wedding. She did an amazing job. We love her!

Amazing Cannon Beach Wedding
We had such a great time with Emily on our wedding on the coast at near Cannon Beach. We wanted our wedding to be different, non-traditional and when we found that Emily did "adventure" weddings...we were sold. When talking with Emily we wanted something near a waterfall or the beach. It didn't take much for Emily to convince us that Cannon Beach was the spot for us. The weather and location were absolutely fabulous. More beautiful and romantic beyond our dreams. The ceremony couldn't have been more perfect. We laughed a lot, cried a little and just had a really good time. Can't wait for an anniversary so we can do it all again. Lily Sent on 08/10/2018Chris and I were grasping for straws for weeks to find the perfect officiant for our adventure elopement and time was seriously ticking until we were referred to Emily. She turned out to be more perfect than we could have ever dreamed.
From the first conversation, Emily was so fun, energetic, and dedicated to making our dream ceremony come true. She was so patient with us and led us through every process, like determining the overall flow of the ceremony, researching on any traditional rituals, and writing our own vows. She also sent us a questionnaire and read through pages and PAGES of our answers to understand our love story and give the ceremony a personal voice.
Honestly, we couldn't have dreamt of a better officiant--actually Emily totally personifies the title of "celebrant". She totally celebrated the heck out of our marriage. I can't recommend her enough to everybody out there.

Then she sent us each a questionnaire to fill out which allowed her to build our ceremony from there. The collaborative process was unexpected and helpful when formulating our ceremony. She really got a sense of who we are not only as a couple, but as individuals as well. Emily made herself readily available for any questions or concerns. I never expected the ceremony to be my favorite part of the wedding day but it was without a doubt the most memorable day of our lives. All of our family and friends were so impressed with Emily. Many of them assumed she was a close friend of ours. By the end, we can definitely say Emily has become a friend and truly enjoys what she does. Her passion for love 100% shines through her work. We would highly recommend her if you want a personal, unique and meaningful ceremony.
