A magical wedding venue
My husband and I were over the moon at how beautiful our wedding at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art was. From our first tour to our actual ceremony and reception, we couldn’t have been happier with our partnership with Tess who was always there to offer ideas and answer any questions we might have. It truly felt as though both us as a couple and our ideas were truly cared for whenever we had any interaction with Tess. MOCA was not only within our budget, but also featured many amenities other places we toured did not. We were so pleased that our guests were even able to have access to the gallery and see the wonderful local art. From our ceremony in the Rodriguez Pavilion with the beautiful Chihuly sculpture, to our reception in the Atrium with the gorgeous uplighting, lit trees, and reflective floor, our wedding was everything we dreamed it would be, and we are so grateful to have had an opportunity to have it at MOCA and to work with Tess. -

A truly unique wedding experience
When my husband and I were looking for a wedding venue, we wanted something unique. The VA MOCA met all the expectations for a one of a kind wedding venue that we could have wished for. The marvelous ficus lighted trees, the awe inspiring Dale Chihuly chandelier, and the rotating art exhibition make for a wedding venue that stands out from the rest. Kay Barbini was the most warm, welcoming and accommodating event manager that we met with (and we looked a LOT of venues). Even when met with rain challenges late the day of, Kay and the MOCA seamlessly adapted to our new plans for the wedding and delivered a beautiful space that marveled our guests from beginning to end. The MOCA has everything we needed in a wedding venue and we cannot recommend it more! -

The perfect wedding venue
Don't think twice about booking MOCA as your wedding venue! This was by far the perfect place to share this special day with our family and friends. Our guest are still talking about how beautiful the facility and grounds are weeks after our wedding. Kay Barbini was the absolute best to work with. I love how she took the time to get to know us and understand what we were looking for in a venue! The ABSOLUTE best place ever! ❤️-

Beautiful Venue!
The minute we walked into the MOCA, we knew we wanted to get married there! We loved the high ceilings of the atrium, the real trees that brought nature inside, and the romantic vibe we knew we could create. We chose to have our ceremony and reception in the Atrium and used the Rodriguez Room for our cocktail hour. The space was perfect and our guests were in awe of the way the Atrium could change from beautiful ceremony to romantic and elegant reception venue!
Kay was very helpful and allowed us multiple visits to ensure all of our vendors were on the same page. All of the MOCA staff were nice and pleasant and made for a smooth event planning process. The kitchen provided the catering team with space, the auditorium stage was perfect for staging flowers and tables, the parking accommodating our large group of 150 guests, and the location was close to the beach which our out of town guests loved. We would highly recommend this venue! -

A Dream Venue!
I am so glad we had our reception at MOCA! When I was looking at venues, we were not sure whether we would be able to get married in church or not, due to our tight timeline before my husband deployed. This was the only venue we looked at that I could see myself getting married at (and we looked at probably 15 venues!) We ended up getting married in church and having our reception here, but it's a beautiful venue for a ceremony as well! Kay was so helpful and flexible with us - we probably bugged her with every possible wedding question and she was gracious, personable and helpful throughout the entire process. I have had so many guests comment on how beautiful the venue was. We did our cocktail hour in the Rodriguez Room (it was so pretty with all of the windows!) and then dinner and reception in the main room (with the lighted trees). I really loved how every room had natural light and as the sun set and it got dark, it perfectly set the tone as the party started! There is a lot of flexibility with how you want to set everything up since there are technically 3 rooms available to you (Rodriguez Room, the theater/stage room and the main room). They have tables and chairs that are included with the venue, you can bring in your own alcohol and choose your own caterer, there is a TV that you can use for a slideshow and there is built in uplighting in the main room. We didn't need to decorate at all besides the linens and centerpieces. There are also 2 private rooms for the bridal party with bathrooms and mirrors/counters/coat racks, plus the backstage space if you need to stay in hiding before the reception. It never felt cramped, even with almost 200 people in the building. In short, the venue was absolutely beautiful and Kay is very easy to work with! -

MOCA offers a great place to have all of your wedding events - and you can truly transform the space into anything you want! We got to have our dogs walk down the aisle with us - which was a definite requirement - and we couldn't have been happier with how our entire event worked out. Kay is very kind and was genuinely excited for us. The staff at MOCA clearly knows what they're doing when it comes to weddings! The one thing I will say is that there are a lot of rules on random things like candles and petals and confetti and sparklers, so if any of those are "must haves" for your wedding day - definitely check in with Kay before you book. You can definitely work around it though! -

The Museum was an absolutely beautiful venue for our wedding. We got so many compliments on how beautiful everything was. Not to mention it was minutes from the oceanfront which allowed us to take some beautiful pictures on the beach prior to the ceremony. Kay and the security staff were very accommodating, letting us have full access to the entire venue, and even set-up the night before. I highly recommend this as a beautiful wedding venue! -

When my husband proposed, the first thing he said was "We are getting married at the MOCA!". He went to a wedding there before years ago and still thought about it till that day. When we first visited the MOCA, Ms. Kay was so kind and helpful explaining to us what the MOCA can provide for us for our wedding day. The trees in the Atrium was definitely a winner which adds so much romance and does not need much added decor. We booked over a year in advance and Ms. Kay was always a call/email away whenever we had any questions. We had the ceremony and reception in the Atrium (had a room flip) & cocktail hour in the Rodriguez. We even used the theater to show a funny little movie my husband and I made to entertain our guests. Everyone loved the MOCA! Thank you so much Kay for everything! I highly recommend the MOCA! -

MOCA is a beautiful reception site for a wedding- our guests couldn't get over the gorgeous main room with lit live trees, the airy and open feeling the sky lights provide, and the general ambiance of the venue. Not only is MOCA a great place to get married, but the staff is incredibly friendly, helpful, and responsive. -

MOCA was the most beautiful venue for our daughter's wedding. The wedding was held in the Rodriguez room and the reception in the Atrium. It was an evening event and the lighting in the trees and the blue up-lighting turned the Atrium into a wonderfully beautiful room. Kay Barbini was fabulous to work with and had some great suggestions. A nice bonus was the gallery being open to the guests during the cocktail hour. MOCA provided a magical night for our family as our daughter started her new life. A simply stunning venue! -

The Virginia MOCA to the rescue!!! I had a wonderful year of planning of my wedding on a beautiful estate on the Eastern Shore of VA...all outside. Yet, when October came along...so did Hurricane Matthew. My year of planning went down the tubes and I had to re-plan my ENTIRE wedding in 4 days. New city, new venue, new caterer, everything! My mom and I immediately called the MOCA (this was my first choice among Virginia Beach venues) and they miraculously had an opening! Kay at the MOCA was so understanding and was willing to do anything she could do to help. I was there everyday for the following four days trying to piece my dream wedding back together. It was fabulous and I am still getting compliments on how gorgeous it all was! -

We met with Irene at MOCA several times earlier this year to discuss our upcoming wedding venue. She was very informative and was happy to show us around and offer suggestions. She was quick to respond to our emails and phone calls, and an absolute delight. We quickly put down the deposit and signed the contract. We love the outdoor feeling indoors...won't have to worry about outdoor weather ruining our special day. Our wedding coordinator and caterer are so excited about working with MOCA, as they have had many weddings there. -

The perfect wedding venue, what else is there to say. We visited around 10 potential wedding venues, and we knew MOCA would be our venue the second we saw it. Irene at MOCA is so sweet, helpful, and has great suggestions as to vendors and ways to save money. The venue itself is so romantic, and my favorite part about it is that each room brings the outside in. Our ceremony took place in the Rodriguez Pavilion with the beautiful greenery visible through the floor to ceiling windows, and the cocktail hour and reception were both in the Atrium with the real life trees. We received so many compliments on the venue from our guests, and people are still telling us how great the wedding was, specifically the venue. It's such a special venue and we couldn't be happier with our choice. -

I seriously do not even know where to begin! Virginia Wedding by Primo Events of made our wedding dreams come true! No words will do justice to appropriately convey our love for Ron Form and his amazing team of vendors. From the moment we first contacted Ron about his services, I truly felt as that our wedding would be his top priority. You could tell his enthusiasm and knowledge would bring to life the ideas we had, and that our dream wedding would come true. We picked Moca for our wedding ceremony & reception party. Irene reserved the venue was great to work with and she gave us a long list of wedding vendors to select from.
We attempted to contact all the vendors but it was an exhausting task to research all these people so we decided to find one person who can do this for us. It was especially crucial in our situation being that we were planning our wedding from Sandiego and moving to Virginia.
Ultimately, I spent more time communicating with Ron about the wedding than anyone. To have someone with you every step of the way and know every detail of the biggest day of your life is a true blessing. I can’t even explain the time, efforts, & dedication that Ron put forth during our wedding weekend. Knowing he was present, there wasn’t one that thing that I had to worry about. A very special thanks to these wonderful people who made our wedding possible. Our caterer was chef Elsa and her food was so delicious. Mrs. Shawn femia is a talented photographer as our photos were surreal and she let us keep everything. DJ chuck was so much fun and he got my grandma to dance which is almost impossible.lol. Tawania our florist made the most unique cascading bridal bouquet for me and the bridesmaids flowers and everthing looked gorgeoues.
From the rehearsal, to the morning of, the afternoon ceremony, cocktail hour, and then reception, he had everyone and everything completely under control. Our weding turned out beautifully thanks to Ron and his vendors. -

Irene and the MOCA were great to work with! We had absolutely no problems with them and LOVED their beautiful space. They helped make my wedding dreams come true! Highly recommended to anyone, only issue is having to find all your own vendors to use in their facility, but they give you a HUGE list of vendors to help you choose. -

We had an ever so elegant and unique wedding on May 27, 2012 at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Virginia Beach. It is a beautiful venue that offers a variety of rooms and ways to create your ceremony and reception. The rental of the spaces was very reasonable and was arranged by the Facility Marketer Irene Tavenner. Ms. Tavenner showed us many options as well as bonuses that you would not otherwise get at other venues. The bonuses included the garden sculptures outside the facility, our guest being able to tour the Andy Warhol Exhibit, the use of a grand piano, the Rodriguez Pavilion which showcases a sparkling 16-foot Dale Chihuly Chandelier and many other bonuses. Ms. Tavenner also provided us with a healthy list of vendors who have provided services for events at MOCA. Ms. Tavenner and the MOCA staff were always polite, helpful and promptly returned our calls and emails for any concerns we had. If you are looking for a unique wedding venue, if you think outside the box and want to create something of your own this is the place for you!!! -

Irene at the Contemporary Art Center was easy to reach and worked with us from beginning to end. They really let our vendors have free reign to transform the space into the wedding of our dreams. This is an excellent location for both a ceremony and reception. This was the only place that we wanted and we weren't disappointed. -

Love the Contemporary Arts Center, which I believe they just changed their name to Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Great space!!! We used them for our cocktail hour and reception, worked very well. Cocktail in the Rodriguez and reception in the Atrium.

The art center is amazing. I do not believe that there is a more beautiful place to be married in Virginia Beach. We came from Miami to get married there. Irene the event coordinator could not have made the long distance planning more seamless. I don’t know the other reviewer’s experience but she always returned my calls and was always on top of the payments. She has been there for a very long time and if you have any questions about vendors she is extremely helpful. I felt very blessed to have her to work with. As far as the chairs I did not see one rip in them. We also had the pleasure of working with Clint. He helped us setup and take down at the end of the night. Without Clint we would have been there all night. All we had to do was ask for something and he was on top of it. If you want to get married in an amazing venue with amazing people to help this is it. The money is totally worth it. Irene and Clint helped in allowing me to have my dream wedding. -

If you are looking for a unique venue for your wedding, the CAC is the place. We had our wedding ceremony and reception there recently. Irene was wonderful to work with as well as the rest of their staff, specifically Clinton who went out of his way to help in any way that he could. We had our wedding ceremony in the theater area and it was absolutely beautiful with the cocktail hour and reception in the atrium. The fact that your guests can go into the art galleries while you are busy taking pictures is a perk. The lit trees are so gorgeous that you need very little decoration in the atrium. All of the guests remarked how beautiful it was. It is a photographer's dream as well. -

The Museum, also known as MOCA, was the venue that made all of my dreams come true. Kay took over the weddings at MOCA after we had signed our contract, and she was only a phone call away the entire time. If you haven't seen this place, get there - put it on your list to see - I highly recommend going and seeing a wedding set up. They can do so much with that great space. I had my entire wedding there (ceremony, cocktail hour, a Museum tour, and the reception). We were able to book vendors we wanted, bring in the alcohol we wanted, and use the chairs and tables at the venue. Did I mention that you are given a annual pass when you book with them. This venue has it all, don't settle for less, and your out of town guest will love it's location right off the highway, and the beauty of the Museum. Plus, getting to work with Kay is such a treat! -

Perfect venue!
The MOCA was such a gorgeous venue and was perfect for us. We had just shy of 100 guests, and so many of them commented on how beautiful the wedding was! -

We had our ceremony in the Rodriguez Pavillion and it was absolutely stunning! We knew from the beginning that we were in charge of setting up and breaking down chairs and had to do it the day of, so we just had to plan for extra hands to be available. We were able to have a rehearsal the day before which was nice because none of our wedding party had been there before. The events director Kay is upbeat, very kind and helped us with all of our questions timely and graciously. The MOCA allowed our guests to visit the exhibits after the ceremony so they had something to do before our cocktail hour began at a different venue. It is a beautiful setting for any kind of party! -

We had a lovely wedding at MOCA in Sept 2017. Kay was very sweet and easy to work with. They are very well equipped to handle large events, and having the tables and furniture already there to use was a big bonus. -

This venue was a perfect place for a wedding. The option of having the ceremony in one room and reception in another works well. It is convenient to the ocean front and a beautiful venue. Don't be turned off by the view during the day, at night it gets MUCH more beautiful and the way the lights play off the trees and the shining floor is perfect. Irene, the event coordinator there, is especially helpful and a pleasure to work with! Wouldn't have changed a thing about the venue, although it was a bit pricey, however the venue comes with chairs, tables, lighting, and a sound system so there is value in that. -

This is such a unique venue and all of my guests let me know how absolutely stunning it was! It does cost quite a bit of money but you do get tables, chairs, kitchens, ice, great photo spots, etc with the cost. If you want a unique venue, this is the place! Irene is a great person to work with. She offers suggestions for set-up, and gives you an idea of what other brides have done with the space. There are rules on what you can do while you are there because it is a public art museum but all of the restrictions are fair. You will have to purchase a public liability insurance policy which will cost an extra $300 dollars (hint: if you are a USAA member, you can get this policy for considerably cheaper). The only mishap was that we were supposed to be able to get there the morning of the wedding at 10 am to start setting up and there was a miscommunication with security. My now husband had to get a little snappy because we were told one thing but it wasn't followed up with security. Absolutely beautiful place and I am so glad I chose this venue for my wedding. -

STUNNING wedding venue for any season!!
OH MY GOSH. We were completely floored when we found this venue. This place is absolutely gorgeous by providing the beauty of indoors (AC, heat, no rain) with outdoors (trees with string lights). It honestly felt like we were in a movie. We used the gorgeous Rodriguez Pavilion (full length windows that outlook to the trees) for cocktail hour and the Atrium (trees spaced throughout with lights on the trees as well as light up pillars) for our reception. Our guests seamlessly transitioned from cocktail hour through the magnificent theater to our reception area. We even had a small room that went into the reception area where we perfectly could stage the photobooth. Kay Barbini who is in charge of the facilities was extremely informative and even offered us some advice. The facility is a little pricey compared to what we looked at, but the venue was so breath-taking, we had to book it. Especially to avoid any scares with the heat of August and the rain.-

We had our wedding at the MOCA and were extremely pleased!! Our guests have continued to tell us how amazing the venue was! It is so sleek and modern that we needed very little decorations. I wanted an outside wedding originally but since our wedding was in August, the MOCA was the perfect fit! Our ceremony was in the pavilion and the ceiling to ground windows created a beautiful backdrop. The reception was in the atrium where there are lit trees throughout the room. It was beautiful! I was nervous about how we would seat 150 guest in there, but was extremely surprised with how much room we still had after the tables were set up! We especially loved that our guests were able to walk through the exhibit during our cocktail hour while we had our pictures taken! This was such a stress reliever because I didnt feel like our guests were standing around waiting on us. The grounds around the museum were also great for taking outside pictures! Great choice! -

The Contemporary Art Center might was a fantastic venue for my wedding and reception. We were married in the atrium and had a break for guest to view the gallery and then the reception was in the atrium as well. I loved the feel of the trees and white lights. It turned out amazingly. My guests really enjoyed having something to do for the brief time between the ceremony and reception while we were taking pictures. Irene is the coordinator for events and she is such a sweetheart. She was always very quick to respond and clarified any questions we had. She also had suggestions for a caterer which helped us so much. Irene was awesome.
The only thing that kept this from being a perfect venue was the security guard that was at my wedding. He wouldn't open the art galleries per our contract so my dad had to give him some cash. He tried to get us to leave early as well. Lucky for me, my mother brought our contract with her to the wedding just in case there was any confusion. I'm so glad she did. -

The CACV is an absolutely stunning venue, with floor to ceiling windows, a contemporary modern look, and beautiful indoor trees with lights. The Rodriguez Pavilion is wonderful for a more intimate ceremony (we had 75 guests and thought the space was perfect) and the Atrium was great for a reception- we were able to put all our guests around the dance floor and leave it open. Venue is unique and worked very well with our black/white/silver theme- we found a lot of places had colorful carpet/walls/chairs etc and couldn't pull our theme off well. However, if you are a budget-conscious couple this place is quite expensive. It was our splurge item but we hardly needed any decorations. -

The staff of CACV was a pleasure to work with and we were provided with a beautiful venue for our ceremony and reception! It was a bit costly compared to other venues, but was worth every penny. They included security for our event and tables and chairs for the ceremony. If you wish to have an event here, I recommend booking very early as it is a popular venue! -

MOCA was a beautiful place to have my ceremony and reception. The tress inside the atrium gave you a feeling that you are outdoors with the comfort of being indoors. They also have thier own uplighting which saves you a lot of money and hassle of hiring someone else to do it. Irene tavner is the MOCA liason and she was amazing. She was very helpful and caring. She made me feel like I was apart of her family. She provided us with many suggestions on ways to cut down cost on wedding items.
The only thing I did not like about MOCA was the cost, I felt that a large part of my budget went to the venue but besides the venue, tables and chairs you dont get anything else. Also, I was told that the gallery would be open for my guest to walk through during cocktail hour but they were not. -

We recently had our wedding at Virginia MOCA. In this area it is very hard to find places where you can conduct your ceremony with your own vendors. Since I am part of a wedding planning team with affiliations to vendors, I looked exactly for this type of space as oppose to a hotel or venue that required you to use their vendors only. Virginia MOCA is a beautiful facility. It is pricey, but it comes with tables, chairs, lighting, kitchen, etc., so be prepared for that. We rented the Atrium space for 5 hours for a little over 4K. Don't be so sold on renting both Atrium and Rodriguez. It sounds like a good deal, but essentially you are nearly 2K more to rent another space for 30mins tops on the actual wedding ceremony. Having it all in one room worked out perfect and our guests enjoyed the gallery as we took pictures. My only issue which was a big issue was when my vendors were scrutinized and asked questions which had nothing to do with the contract. We chose a small business caterer at first and had to switch to a restaurant that caters for events. We had all contracted paperwork on hand include my event planners having food handling licenses to set up food. We were then asked numerous questions about who would be serving food and list the names (we were having buffet style so we had no servers outside of water, tea, bartender on drinks, and staff who picked up empty plates (hired by the event planners), the caterer of the food must drop it off in their catering truck (this was not in their contract and was absurd), etc. Not to mention this happened up to 2 days before the wedding, which can be stressful when the bride gets that call. None the less, thanks to my event planners, the day went beautiful. The manager from Virginia MOCA did call my event planner the day after the wedding and apologized for all of the issues. The liason for events also called my event planner to apologize for any misunderstanding. -

The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is a beautiful venue to give your wedding an unique backdrop. Surrounded by windows onlooking a beautiful courtyard and indoor ficus trees, this venue brings the outdoors into your indoor wedding. For a bride that wants simple, intimate, and elegant this venue requires very little wedding decor because of its beautiful character. This venue is a little costly so for a budgeting couple that want to stay under budget, they will need to save plenty of coins to afford this location. For the cost, more amenities should be included and more flexibility considered seeing that insurance is required to rent this venue. -

We do not recommend MOCA. Several issues we brought up in advance were not taken care of, and more issues arose the night of our wedding. We were members of the museum and frequented it often, but each time we’d go, the bathrooms would be dirty, and would have little to no soap/paper towels. We brought this up to the event manager and she said she had noticed the same, and would ensure those would not be problems during our wedding. On the big day, bathrooms were dirty, we ran out of paper towels after 1.5 hours, and there was no soap. Let me reiterate. No soap. All of our guests, and our catering staff, were left rinsing hands in just water and then drying them on their clothes or shaking them to air dry. Hard to believe a venue that regularly hosts events and weddings would not supply soap and paper towels, which are very basic necessities. There are also sinks/toilets in the getting ready rooms, but no paper towels or soap were supplied in those rooms. In the women’s getting ready room, the toilet began to leak. After just 3 uses from the bridal party, the room was flooding, and with no onsite manager present, we were cleaning it ourselves. It is hard to believe no one knew about the toilet in advance considering how much it leaked. Now for the grossest part: throughout the evening, there were several HUGE cockroaches running around. One ran into the getting ready room area and the rest were all out where we were eating, dancing, and trying to enjoy ourselves. Some were stomped on, others were chased back into the trees (the venue has lovely trees inside…which apparently house bugs). The most frustrating and disheartening part of this is that we brought up all of these issues to the event manager after the fact, and she never responded. Not even to offer a simple, “I’m sorry.” So again, we do not recommend this venue. There are other gorgeous options to choose from in the Virginia Beach area that will care more about their client’s experience/well-being. -

My husband and I got married at the Contemporary Art Center and although the venue is beautiful, and I mean beautiful, they are the absolute worst people to work with. The events director talks to you like you're stupid, she doesn't return your calls or e-mails until she wants something, she tells you you haven't paid for things when you have a returned check showing you have. And for a place that charges $4,700 to rent out two rooms for a four hour wedding, they don't have any chairs available. Originally, they told us they had about 90 chairs we could use. Since we invited 150 people to the wedding, we knew we'd have to rent "some." Then, three weeks before the wedding, they tell us that they don't have ANY chairs because somehow they all got broken and the cushions got ripped. So we ended up renting 150 chairs. The next week, they call me back and say that they've "repaired" the chairs and now have 150 we can use. Awesome, right? However the new paint chipped off the chairs and the ripped cushions were "repaird" with white duct tape. Oh, and when they painted the chairs, before they dried, they folded the chairs back up so they stuck together!
If you want to have your wedding at this beautiful venue, I'd suggest waiting to see if the current staff is replaced because these people are absolutely horrible to work with. Please be warned. -
