A True Artist

My fiance and I had originally planned to get married in Ireland but after the Covid pandemic, we switched gears quickly and decided to plan a Manhattan wedding with only a few months notice. We found Matthew Sowa online after doing some research and were blown away by the quality of his work that we saw on his website and social media outlets. He was kind enough to meet with us ahead of time via FaceTime to discuss the details of our wedding day. On the day of our wedding he arrived 15 minutes early, with his assistant, and got right to work. He was completely hands-on, rearranging furniture and such in order to capture the best pictures he could in the space provided. He captured not only the first look with my father in an authentic way, but the emotion on both of our faces. He then sent me those photos on Father's Day, even though the rest of the photos were not edited yet, so that I could share them with my Dad! I knew after about 30 minutes with Matthew that we made the best decision hiring him. The pictures that he captured from our big day are pieces of art. He does incredible work with lighting and is able to capture moments in a way I have never seen before. Everyone at our wedding was also raving about him and wanted his contact information! He also made sure to get one of my most wanted shots perfectly (church exit with flower petals) and was clear with directions to the guests in order to execute it properly. His directions and prompts for photos were clear and direct. My husband and I are already brainstorming when we can hire him again for a future event!

One of a kind NYC wedding photographer.

I loved working with Matthew Sowa, He is an extremely talented
creative photographer and person to work with. Highly knowledgeable
about lighting and fantastic personal direction skills. We get so many

I cannot express just how pleased my husband and I are with Matt's photos. We just received our full wedding photo set a few days ago and are is awe of the one of a kind talent that is Matt Sowa. He was able to capture every magical moment and emotion of our special day and in such a raw, beautiful, edgy and artistic way. He was also an absolute pleasure to work with, extremely professional, and personable. I highly recommend him and his team and plan to work with him again on any upcoming special events.

While I'm not the type to typically take the time to write reviews, this one is necessary. I can't say enough about our experience with Matthew Sowa and Team for our wedding on 4/12/2015. Not only was he flexible in his packages/pricing which helped, but his passion for his art is contagious. He showed up early and made the most use of his time while he was with us.. He was familiar with our venue so knew the great spots readily available. And the best part, was he surprised us just a short 10 days a later with 67 "sneak peak" photos to feed our need to relive the wedding asap (without us even having to ask!).

I am getting constant compliments on the photos which, at the end of the day, is all you have! Definitely hire Matthew Sowa for your wedding....he is top notch!!

If you are looking for high quality wedding photos that can be featured in top magazines then Matthew Sowa and his team are amazing!! They will not stop taking pictures...I don't even remember them taking a break at our wedding. They captured every person I invited to the wedding and every moment I hoped to see in print. I was so impressed with his work that I wish I was getting married again to get even more pictures. All the photographs really capture the moment in a fun, drama-filled and/or romantic way. Matt see's what no one else see's...until you get the images after your wedding is over...then you really appreciate the talent he has. He is not an ordinary photographer...he is an artist that always has to get that perfect shot...it really shows in the final outcome.

Matthew was beyond amazing for both my engagement pictures and my wedding pictures. Not only were they both edited and send back to me in a very timely matter, but they came out amazing! He was wonderful to work with and a true artistic genius behind the lens. Highly recommend!

Based on all of the previous reviews here on The knot it should not be a surprise that Matt really is one of The BEST NYC photographer!

We didn't have a location in mind to shoot on our wedding day . We really relied on Matt and his ideas to come up with unique, beautiful locations and he came up with some amazing locations for us and our large bridal party to shoot at.He made the entire process enjoyable and comfortable both for us and our entire party. Both him and his assistant Ralph were amazing to work with and helped us out. We are so thankful that we chose to work Matthew Sowa Photography and we would recommend them to all our friends in need of a photographer. Best choice ever!

Matthew did a fantastic job on my engagement and wedding day. His pictures were amazing and his professionalism was incomparable. He is fun, extremely creative, has an amazing eye and attention to detail. I will recommend him before any other photographer out there. He is just outstanding.

Matt & his team did such a great job on my wedding and the engagement session. They were always very professional and responsive.. Ralf the second photographer did an amazing job, shooting the guys durring the preperation. I have gotten over 1000 pictures to choose from for my album and am definitely having a hard time with it, because they are all so great. I would highly recommend Matthew Sowa Photography...

Matthew Sowa is an artist. He sees the world through the lens of his camera and boy, is that world sexy! We were so enamored by Matthew's work that we broke the contract with the original photographer that we had picked just to work with him. His passionate yet calm demeanor is so comforting. He does not force you into awkward poses or push his style on you. He simply follows you with the camera and lightly nudges certain actions: "Show me how you embrace each other", "Kiss each other and show her how much you love her." Our engagement and wedding photos were so emotional and natural and showed our true selves. We have received so many compliments on our photos - they are unparalleled.

The day of the wedding - Matthew had a fire in his eyes! His ideas, enthusiasm and passion for his work were everywhere! He was jumping on tables, rolling in the grass and stopping traffic to get his desired shots! What amazing memories he has captured for us!

I can't wait for our pregnancy shoot!

If you are looking for wedding photos that can be featured in Vogue, this is your guy. When it comes to photography, I don't think it can get better than this. He is a true artist, you can see it in his eyes, he has a vision and he gets really excited and has to get that perfect shot every time. His photos are so real and every one of them feels like a million dollar shot. Very glad he captured our wedding. These memories can now last forever, in style. :)

I got married on November 17th 2012. When my husband and I were in the process of looking for a photographer, we came across Mathew Sowa. From the moment we looked through his photos, we knew we had to have him be apart of our wedding day.
A few words that could describe Mathew are amazing, an artist and a true gentlemen. He did everything on our wedding day to make us feel comfortable while at the same time capturing our special moments with his camera. Mathew made me feel so comfortable in front of the camera when otherwise I am quite shy. Time went so fast on our wedding day, but I am so comforted to know I will always have these beautiful moments captured in these amazing pictures. I can honestly say it was a true privilege to work with someone so graceful and talented. I look forward to working with Mathew again and would recommend him to any bride that is getting married.

My husband and I just got married about a month ago. We are so very grateful to find Matthew Sowa.He and his team are very professional and super duper nice to work ! He responded to our correspondences very promptly. Some photographers took days to get back to me. And accountability is so important of being a pro photographer. In addition, Matt is extremely good at journalistic photography. My husband is very camera shy. So I need Matt to capture my hubby's emotions naturally instead of having him posing in front of the camera. And he did it beautifully!!! The wedding pix turned out to be gorgeous! I am having a very difficult time to pick my favorites to go into the album! I also highly recommend to have Matthew Sowa to design the album. The sample he showed me is top notch!!! I am speechless when it comes to Matthew Sowa. Matthew Sowa’s creativity and passion for his craft shines through his work. My husband and I were engaged for about a year before we got married (June 2, 2012) and we began to shop around for a photographer. We went to various wedding studios – and spoke to a lot of sales personnel instead of the actual photographer – until we met Matthew Sowa. Our first meeting with Matt was very personal, he was very honest and open about his work.
Matt and his assistant Agatha did an amazing job shooting our engagement session as well as our wedding day. Our pictures are absolutely beautiful! Every moment that he captured turned out to be much more than a static representation of an event--- each image was alive with energy and emotions. To top it all off, his enthusiastic and accommodating personality, made him an absolute pleasure to work with!!
He is awesome, highly highly recommended.

May sound strange coming from a bride but - I never wanted a wedding. The day I decided that I cannot live if I don't have one was the day that I first saw Matthew Sowa's work. My now husband and I planned our wedding day around Matthew's availability. We would do so a million more times if we had to. In fact, we consider ourselves incredibly privileged and lucky to even be able to book Matthew for a day. He is busy for a reason! His talent is unreal. I don't even have to mention it, it's enough to look at just one of his photos. When they say that a picture is worth a thousand words......., you should know that Matthew Sowa's picture will make you speechless.

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Matthew on our wedding day. My wedding party said it was the first time they actually had fun while taking pictures. He didn't make us stand in ridiculous poses, he shot mostly candids - and when he did direct us to do something, it was enjoyable. I started my photographer search simpy by using the web- once I found Matthew Sowa's website I bursted into tears going through his photos- I had to use him because he has the most unique ability to capture each special moment in a way that NO OTHER photographer ever could/can. After we met him in NY we looked over the packages and all the sample photo albums and we left there more excited for our wedding than we ever were! Matt is reliable and easy to work with. We had our wedding and reception on two different days and Matt graciously came to both and snapped pictures with excitement throughout the entirety. He is everything that his website says- unobtrusive, artistic... overall amazing. I can't wait for another occasion to utilize him again- our pictures and album are unbelievable and exceeded every expectation that I had- everyone who has seen our photos are stunned. I don't think I could find strong enough words to express my happiness with Matthew Sowa Photography. Matthew was extremely responsive from the first time I emailed him and so endearing when my husband and I met him in person. He took his time explaining everything to us even though we were already 100% sold on his work.

Matthew's creativity and eye for capturing REAL emotion is not something you find every day. You can tell how much he loves what he does by the creative way that he shoots and the unique beauty of each picture. These are not your every day wedding pictures ladies and gentleman- they are pure art.

Hiring Matthew Sowa Photography was BY FAR one of the BEST (and favorite) wedding decisions that my husband and I made. Not only did he take amazing pictures completely unobtrusively, but the album that he put together for us is absolutely unreal. Our family and friends are amazed by it.

I truthfully could go on and on about how happy we are, but I will end this by saying I would hire Matthew over and over and over again to capture any important moment in our lives.

I am speechless when it comes to Matthew Sowa. A. I can't believe I found him. B. Our pictures were exactly what we wanted and more. EVERYONE was floored by our pics. I've had numerous people come up to me and say they were the best wedding photos they had ever seen. Besides being ridiculously talented, Matthew is reliable and efficient. He listened to what we wanted. He responds immediately. My father -in- law is a professional photographer and he was extremely impressed with the amount of detail Matthew focused on in post production. We are so happy that we not only have candid weddings photos to remind us of that amazing day, but we have great art to hang on our walls. If you want out of the box wedding photos, look no further. I already have family members talking about using him.

My two sisters and I have used Matthew for each of our weddings - that's how highly we think of him and his work! I'm the youngest, so when it came to booking our photographer, my husband and I went straight to Matthew. No one else compares and no one else will do. His work is amazing not only because of his undeniable talent, but his dedication and desire to not only create a great photo, but a great piece of artwork. On top of that he's professional and reliable - and full of great ideas! If price is an issue, look to skim your budget elsewhere because at at price point, Matthew and his photos are definitely worth every penny!!

Matthew has been great, his work is miles ahead of any other photographer I had ever worked with. The whole process went as planned and there were no surprises which I think is the most important on the day of your wedding. I highly recommend Matthew as I doubt you will find such high quality professional for the price.

Matthew photographed our wedding and I cannot speak more highly of him and his beautiful work. We were looking for pictures that were special and out of the ordinary and Matthew delivered beyond our expectations. Our wedding pictures and our albums were exquisite. We have gotten so many compliments on our album and both of our families cannot stop raving about how gorgeous the pictures are, even over a year later. Matthew was so great during our initial consultation and he and his assistant were wonderful on the day of the wedding. They caught all the action in a breathtaking way and really captured the emotion of the day. When it came time to put together the album, Matthew was very patient with me, even though I requested numerous changes. I highly recommend Matthew and I would not hesitate to use his services again.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Matthew Sowa. My husband and I were engaged about a year and a half before we actually got married (June 26, 2011) and we began to shop around for a photographer. I'm super picky and was set on finding the "perfect" photographer. And I did! After visiting various, typical wedding studios, Rob and I met with Matthew. Our meeting with him was very personal, he was so open and honest, and his work just speaks for itself. (Go to his website- those amazing pics will really be yours!) I've never met a photographer with an eye like Matthew. He is a true perfectionist, and puts so much time and effort into his work. After our engagement pictures, I knew our wedding photos would be stunning. We just got them back and I am in love! He captured EVERY little moment that flies by in those few hours- and so creatively and artistically. Matthew Sowa has gone above and wayyy beyond my expectations! I would recommend him a million times. I can't thank him enough for his beautiful work, and I can guarantee that any bride that uses his services will not be disappointed!

I have to say, Matthew was unbelievable. I don't have a single thing to complain about (which is rare!). We are so pleased with our pictures and have gotten a ton of positive feedback from our friends and family.

We are so LUCKY to have found Matthew. Photos were definitely my biggest concern. I'm not someone who loves to pose for photos and I also find the "traditional" wedding photos to be cheesy so we really spent alot of time meeting with different photographers that were more editorial style. We were definitely looking for someone more creative. Matthew came hihgly reccommended and actually was able to EXCEED my expectations which I thought would be impossible! I can honestly say that I think we have the best wedding photos I've ever seen. I hope every bride can say that about their photos too. Matthew was so easy to work with. He met with us multiple times in advance and after and was very patient and accommodating. Day of he was very professional, discreet and was really able to capture our day with photos, catching every moment and telling a beautiful story. I can really say that I think Matthew works really hard for you to make sure he is getting the best shots and also to capture everything. I would also HIGHLY reccommend doing the day after shoot!! This was really the best part AND so much fun. It takes the pressure off day of. You don't have to worry about traveling to different locations and worrying that you didn't get enough portraits. We were able to get a lot day of but nothing can compare to the day after shoot. Plus you get to wear your dress again!! Matthew's albums are also gorgeous, we had never seen albums like them. Again, top notch. His second shooter was great as well. I'm so grateful we found Matthew. I don't think anyone else would compare. If you're lucky enough to have found him, hire him! You will be grateful too.

Matthew's photography is not just a photography! it is a true art! We don't even know how we can express and thank him for his incredible work. He did amazing job shooting our engagement session and we can't wait to work with him again on our wedding pictures. The atmosphere during the photo shoot was great! I was a little afraid that it would be difficult for us to be natural and this would show in the pictures. But Matthew created very relax and pleasurable mood.
Our engagement pictures are absolutely beautiful and not only beautiful but alive! Every time I look at them I am glad I met such a talented photographer! Thank you that you captured those important moments for us in such a incredible way! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Matthew and his assistant (Ralph, I think?) were wonderful! I truly enjoyed working with Matthew, his personal style is amazing, which you can see from his portfolio of work, but his personality also is so pleasureable to work with. He was unobtrusive and frankly most of the time, because I personally wanted alot of the candid shots, we forgot he was even there. But he still managed to engage my family and friends and mingled almost like a guest. He responded immediately to any question or concern during the planning process and quietly and tactfully directed whereever necessary without making the day feel "directed" or dominated by the need for pictures. I was truly able to enjoy my wedding and also get all the beautiful memories I desired. A very talented professional in every respect!

In our search for a photographer for our wedding, my husband and I interviewed several candidates. The process of viewing portfolio after portfolio left us, to say the very least, overwhelmed. There were a number of talented photographers with bodies of work that were in their own ways both beautiful and interesting, yet there was something holding us back from making a decision. It was then that we met with Matthew Sowa and we finally understood what it was that was subconsciously fueling our reservations with respect to the other candidates.

The other photographers had delightful portfolios, but Matthew’s work went beyond the realm of what one thinks of when considering wedding photography. Every moment that he captured turned out to be much more than a static representation of an event--- each image was alive with energy and embodied the unbridled happiness that my husband, our guests and myself felt on that day. Beautifully orchestrated photos that pulsed with emotion far surpassed any of the other works that we had looked at during our initial search. In addition to Matthew’s obvious ability to capture a plethora of moments and create beautiful, in essence, “living” memories of our wedding, coupled with his beaming, enthusiastic and accommodating personality, made him an absolute pleasure to work with.

Matthew is an individual whose passion for his craft shines through his work. His personality and the zest with which he commits himself to creating works that transcend traditional photography, is what elevates his work to a place of beauty that will evoke the same emotions captured in that moment for many years to come.

In short, he is the best!

Matthew is an amazing photographer, very creative. We have so much fun shooting with him our engagement and weeding photos. We would love to do it again, just waiting for the occasion.

Matthew is incredible. His pictures look like they belong in a bridal magazine or the Vogue!!!. He is very talented and definitely very knowledgeable about lighting and photography and has an immense love for his job. He is very professional and a pleasure to work with. If you are looking for wedding photos that can be featured in Vogue, this is your guy. When it comes to photography, I don't think it can get better than this. He is a true artist, you can see it in his eyes, he has a vision and he gets really excited and has to get that perfect shot every time. His photos are so real and every one of them feels like a million dollar shot. Very glad he captured our wedding. These memories can now last forever, in style. :)

The pictures he provided were beyond what we could have expected! Would recommend to any couple who does not want just the traditional photographs.

Pictures were very different from the usual typical photos. He went the extra mile on full room photos by standing on a ladder. I had additional copies of photos made and Matt was very speedy on getting the photos to me. If there are specific photos you want make sure he knows beforehand otherwise you may not get them. All in all a pleasurable experience.
