Saved the Day!
My daughter's gown came in way too big due to the incorrect measurements taken by the bridal shop. At first, Martha was doubtful that the gown was fixable due to the structure of the bodice. After some discussion she agreed to try and the results were perfect! The integrity of the beautiful gown was left in tact and my daughter looked AMAZING!!. Martha also altered her reception gown, rehearsal dress, bridal shower dress and a cocktail dress. Everything was done to perfection and the costs of all these alterations were very reasonable. After reading some of the other reviews, I can see where someone might interpret Martha's manner as terse but I think her demeanor is really just a result of a very busy schedule and I am sure tedious at times work. Once you crack the exterior she is a lovely person that I felt truly cared about delivering the best experience possible for my daughter. -

Amazing alterations!
Martha Shump is absolutely the best! She came highly recommended, and I'm so glad I worked with her! I got married last October and brought my dress to Martha a few months in advance. The dress was too tight...I mean, we couldn't even get it buttoned all the way when it first came in. I was in a complete panic because to me, the dress was way too small. We didn't have time to order another size, so I took it to Martha hoping that she could work some magic. And she did! She ended up hemming my dress, adding a bustle, removing boning, completely reworking lace sections, lifting the dress at the shoulders (probably incorrect terminology LOL), and letting it out completely then tailoring it to fit me from there...In my opinion, she did a great deal of work to make my dress perfect, at a very affordable price, and with beautiful skill! I would definitely recommend Martha to anyone I know! -

Beautiful work!
Martha altered my wedding gown to perfection. My wedding dress was ordered too big and needed a lot of work to fit properly. Martha took great care, time, and attention to detail to make the necessary alterations while preserving the many layers of fabric, lace and other details on my gown. Martha is so talented and I couldn’t have been happier with how the dress turned out. She also did the alterations for my mom and sister and they were very happy with her work as well. We were all able to schedule our fittings together which was very convenient. -

Couldn’t have chosen a better individual for alternations
I am truly so happy I was recommended to Martha through my bridal store. She was so attentive to detail, responsive, and very flexible. We moved to Atlanta prior to my second fitting and Martha was so accommodating with appointments as I was driving in. The dress fits like an absolute glove! You’re in good hands with Martha! -

Bridal Seamstress A++
Martha comes with years of experience designing as well as altering bridal wear and was recommended to me by the owner of my gown shop. Martha is an efficient communicator and respects her customer's time, but what's more is she completed my first fitting in less than 20 minutes--despite the dress unexpectedly being a few sizes too big. She offered insights on what would be flattering, unflattering, and provided me a simple timeline to follow thereafter. I was extremely impressed with her professionalism and thoroughness as well as cost effectiveness. -

Martha was a miracle worker! When the bridal store ordered my dress several sizes too big and I wanted to add sleeves to my dress she jumped right in. She is beyond sweet and I could not believe how she made my dreams become a reality. Martha made my dress exactly how I had envisioned! With that being said I had expected to pay a good chunk of change for my alterations and she was very reasonable especially for all of the work she had to do on my dress!! -

Martha is an incredibly talented woman! I bought my dress literally off the rack and several sizes too big. She worked with me to recut the dress to make it fit in the way I imagined it when I purchased it. She was professional and super patient in helping to make it perfect. She also added a belt to the dress and turned my mom's headpiece veil into a comb for me to wear. Everything she touches is gold! -

Incredible work! Martha made me a custom veil, from scratch. I am so impressed by how from just a few inspiration photos sent to her, she knew exactly what I wanted. My veil is gorgeous & I can't wait to wear it on my wedding day! Beautiful handiwork and she is sweet and easy to work with--fast service. -

Martha recently was the seamstress for my wedding dress and she is absolutely AMAZING. I purchased my Watters gown from The White Magnolia in Jacksonville and chose to use Martha for alterations. She was extremely professional, experienced, and patient when taking on the project of making my dress perfect. I was in need of a little more space in my dress and she presented me with multiple options on how to go about altering it to loosen it up. She was extremely flexible with appointments and ensured I was happy at each dress fitting. I can honestly say that she took my dress and made it my perfect wedding gown. Thank you, Martha, for making me feel so perfect and beautiful on my wedding day. I cannot recommend you enough! -

Martha is a miracle worker! I purchased my wedding gown second-hand because it is from a very expensive designer and I wouldn't have been able to affored it otherwise. It needed a lot of work because it had been previously altered. The girl who I purchased it from was similar in size to me, but a few inches shorter and smaller in the chest. The dress needed to be made longer, the whole top of the dress had to be redone because the previous seamstress hadn't taken it in properly, and the added boning inside the dress also had to be redone because it was crooked. The dress has a very delicate lace overlay, so it was not very easy to work on. When Martha finished the dress and I tried it on, the difference was amazing! I hadn't realized how badly altered it had been previously, until I tried it on after she had completed her alterations. It now fits me absolutely perfectly! She was so sweet and accommodating throughout the whole process. She even offered to take my dress to the cleaners and pick it up for me so I wouldn't have to go out of my way. And her pricing is extremely reasonable! I would very, very highly recommend Martha to any bride. I honestly don't think my dress would have worked out if I hadn't found her! Thank you Martha, you're the best! -

I bought my dress off the rack, so the only alterations I needed were hem, deeper neckline and a deeper back-line. Martha did an excellent job. She hemmed my dress perfectly, made just a deep enough neckline so it wasn't too revealing but was low enough for me :) and she also enhanced my back by lowering my back-line of the dress which also didn't have me worrying about the top of the zipper which before she did this I thought was going to pop off as soon as I bent over! Martha was very sweet, professional and offered excellent tips on where to find inexpensive specialty bras! She even cleaned a few spots off of my dress without me asking! -

Martha was wonderful to work with. I used her on 2 separate occasions and was pleased both times with her work. She was honest and didn't overcharge like most of the bridal boutiques do. I was recommended to her by a friend and in return I referred my Mother-in-Law there for her dress as well. My bustle did end up breaking on the big day but it could have been all the dancing I was doing. Overall, I was still pleased and would go back. -

Martha was a life saver!!! Long story short, she had to remake the entire top of my dress from new fabric that we had to order from the designer!! And it was perfect! She was super knowledgeable, has an eye for detail and she had fantastic workmanship. Even though my dress was in pieces I was always calm knowing that I was in her hands. She also did a fitting for my sister's bride's maid dress only a few days before the wedding! I was also astounded at how little she charged me for all her additional work. I would highly recommend her to anyone!!!

Martha did all of my wedding dress alterations along with designing and making my veil and headpiece. She did a fantastic job with my alterations - I had a very detailed dress with lots of beadwork and she was able to alter it perfectly to my body.
She was able to use some portions of my wedding dress alterations in my headpiece. She designed a beautiful simple flower with minimal feathers. It was gorgeous and got tons of compliments. I wanted a simple veil and she was able to create that for me as well.
Her prices were unbelieveable. What it would have cost me for a veil at another store I was able to get the veil, headpiece and the alterations. Thank you Matha! -

I first used Martha back in 2007 to alter my bridesmaid's dress for a friend's wedding. Her prices were (in my opinion) dirt cheap compared to many other seamstresses. She only charged $60 to take in the sides about 5 inches, hem the length several inches, add boning to keep the top straight, cups (so I wouldn't have to wear a bra), and a bustle because the dress had a long sash. I was so pleased that I hired her again to alter my wedding dress. At first I was a little worried because I knew there was going to be a lot of work involved (my gown was all lace and had a lot of intricate beading). She basically had to take it apart and put it back together again, but she did a wonderful job and charged about $200 less than it probably would have cost elsewhere. I had absolutely no problems carrying on a conversation with Martha, and I found her to be fairly easy to get along with although I could see how some people might get the opposite impression. She's popular so her schedule can fill up fast, but I didn't have an issue getting an appointment time that worked with my schedule. I would highly recommend her! -

After purchasing my dress at a local bridal boutique, I was referred to Martha to have my bustle put in. Thankfully, I only required that done since the stock size of the dress fit me perfectly. Martha even had me try the dress on just to be sure since a lot of girls mistakenly feel that their dress fits well when it doesn't and she was in agreement with me. She never tried to "upsell" or add any extra costs that were not necessary. Her work was stellar and high quality. I did have to reschedule an appointment with her due to her being sick and unfortunately the messages she left never got through to me. I live almost 2 hours away and had made it to Jacksonville when I received her phone call. I believe it was simply an issue with the phone and not Martha herself.
I'm a bit surprised by a previous reviewer saying she was argumentative... I found the exact opposite! Martha is very kind and professional. No, she won't sugar coat things and she's not there to be your best friend and tell you how beautiful you are every other second. The only way I can see her being hard to work with is if you're late to your appointment. Other than that, she's a doll =) -

I found Martha when my boss got married and she used Martha as a seamstress. Even though I didn’t need any major alterations on my dress, I still wanted someone I could trust explicitly with the alterations. Martha was amazing. She worked for Disney as a costume designer and still designs some of her own gowns, as well as reworking others. She did a wonderful job on my dress and her prices are extremely reasonable. My mom’s dress needed a complete overhaul. The top was made of lace, and Martha had to take it pretty much apart, alter it, put it back together, and redo the beadwork. She did an amazing job and charged very little. She is really flexible and willing to work around your schedule.

Martha did a great job on my dress (on the outside). My dress was 2 sizes too big and she completely had to take it apart to fit it correctly. Because my dress was too big, which was not my fault, she called the place where I got it and the bridal store paid for a little bit of my alterations to compensate for their mistake. The dress was still slightly big when all was done but it still fit very well.
When looking on the inside of the dress I noticed that she did not clip the SA. The original seam was still intact which created extra bulk. I ended up with an 1 1/2 SA i/o a 1/2. The seams were also not finished properly. This was only on the lining of the dress so it was hardly noticeable. The lining hem was also not sewn very well. There was a lot of twisting in the hem and you could tell that she didn't take the time to iron it before hand.
The reason I gave her a 3.8 is because my dress still turned out really great it was just the lining (which only I could see) that had issues. -

Martha seemed to know what she was doing and came highly recommended. However she was argumentative and the workmanship was not as great as I had thought. My bussel was uneven and after about 20 minutes at my reception two of them had broke. I ended up having to hold the bottom of my dress up all night because they all eventually broke. Not worth the money I spent. -

Completely devastated
When I went for what I thought would be my final fitting for my wedding dress, Martha had double booked me with another customer. She acted surprised and slightly annoyed that I even wanted to try on my dress before leaving with it - I was rushed out the door and didn’t even get to try it on with shoes. She took one quick look at it and let me leave, so I assumed it would be fine. As a professional, she should have known that dress did not fit and should not have let me leave with it. It turned out to not fit at all, and the clasp broke before the ceremony even started and it wouldn’t stay zipped all night, despite me having LOST weight after picking it up. The only reason I am giving two stars rather than one is that I should have stuck up for myself and made her do an actual final fitting rather than being bullied out the door. I felt awful on my wedding day about how my dress looked - I had to change out of it before the reception was over because it wouldn’t stay zipped.
Right now I’m trying to focus on the positives - that I got to marry the man of my dreams, our wedding was a blast, and most of our other vendors did an INCREDIBLE job. But right now I am just having a hard time getting over the pain and humiliation of having my dress literally come apart at the seams at my own wedding. -

Good product, terrible service
If my dress had not been finished properly, I would have refused to pay for the service. Martha did not have the dress finished by the previously agreed upon date (even though she had four months with the dress). She also rushed through the appointment too quickly because she booked another bride too closely to my appointment. Not to mention, her neighbor - who seems to have a problem with her home business - spends her time harassing the customers entering and leaving Martha’s home. I would not recommend her services. Go somewhere more professional, even if you have to pay a little more. -

I will start with the moral of my story. Do not trust Martha to do her job correctly. She cannot keep track of her business and has a bad attitude. If you go with her, make sure she remembers you, your situation, and check in several times. Don’t pay until all is properly completed.
I planned a wedding in St. Simons Island from Texas and bought my dress in Jacksonville while on a planning trip. The bridal shop strongly recommended Martha Shump for alterations, so I made an appointment for the day I picked up my dress in June. My dress was ordered a size too big so it needed to be completely taken apart and resized. Martha was very understanding, as the mistake was not my fault. I had planned on coming back for a second fitting the month before my wedding, but she didn’t want me to have to make a trip just for that, so she told me I could just come in when I arrive for the wedding (the Thursday before a Saturday wedding) and she could make any minor alterations then. How nice! We discussed that I planned to lose a little weight and that I usually lose from my waist first. She pinned the dress to account for this. She gave me so much confidence in her abilities and since it was her idea to not do a second fitting, I never questioned it. Big mistake. When I picked up my dress two days before my wedding, I had only lost 3-5 pounds and was worried it would be too tight. Instead, it was too big by an inch and half in the waist. Unbeknownst to me, 3-5 pounds was more than the “little weight” we had discussed and it was my fault and I should have let her know. She was booked the next two days and wouldn’t be able to start fixing it until Friday night. That was “too stressful” for her so she wouldn’t do it. She had an appointment scheduled 30 minutes after mine, so we were very rushed and she offered no solutions. I wish I had not paid her before because she did not do her job. I feel doubtful that she even took the dress in as much as we had planned. It was awful. -

My inital perception of Martha was that, although unfriendly and slightly rude, she was sharp and knowledgable. We decided my dress needed to be hemmed, let out slightly in the back, and taken in slightly in the front; she tooks notes of all this, gave me a quote, and I paid. We decided not to do anything until after the holidays when I would return for a re-fitting. The re-fitting went TERRIBLE. Martha insisted she had already done all the alterations except the hem, but upon examing the dress I could tell nothing had been done except the bustle, which she messed up and had to fix. Martha called me fat and asked me if I could not eat for 2 weeks and come back for another fitting then! My dress is a size 4; I weigh 125 pounds and am 5'4; I'm an Ironman triathlete. I'm very proud of my body, but Martha did a great job of making me self conscious in the dress I'd be wearing on the most important day of my life. The crazy thing was that the dress fit really well in its original condition and still fit after the holidays; the alterations were only meant to make it more comfortable. She told me I'd have to pay again for the alterations to be "re-done", but upon looking over her notes she realized she in fact had not done anything to the dress yet!!! No apology was given, just some grunting about how she'd have to squeeze in time to fix it. She agreed to do the alterations as previously decided and I could come back in two weeks to pick up my dress. The final product was ok. The hem and bustle were done nicely, but overall the dress was too big but there was no time to fix it. Since I'm so fat she took it out more than we had originally decided and also refused to take in the bust, stating she never alters the bust in designer dressed, huh? To compensate she quickly sewed in a clasp that broke within minutes on my wedding day and I had to use tape because the sides gaped. -

Unkind and poor customer service
Martha was recommended by my bridal boutique. Unfortunately, I can’t comment on her work because we didn’t get as far as 5 minutes into our appointment. I was driving over 2 hours to pick up my dress and arrive to Martha’s. Along the way, I hit a bit of traffic and had to get gas. I was 10 minutes late and of course was apologetic, but she was clearly unhappy and irritable the moment I arrived with no interest in being flexible or understanding. I felt very rushed and as a burden, enduring several rude and unprofessional comments made, including “do you have GPS? Then you should've known how far it was”. I decided to end the appointment. I understand she is a busy woman but I am myself have plenty on my plate on top of planning a wedding. I decided to take my dress to an alterations place closer to home that I know and love, and most importantly are kind to their customers. I am sure that Martha is great at what she does but her craftsmanship is not worth her attitude. -

Horrible and rude
I should have listened to my gut and never go to Martha in the first place. She is rude and does not make you feel like a beautiful bride. Instead, she doesn’t listen to what you want. She did not properly sew my dress so the lace was bunched up. I told her not to touch the arm pits in my dress and she did anyways. This caused my boobs to pop out on top and tape would not hold the dress down. Martha argued with me every time I mentioned to her how I want my off the shoulder sleeves to fall. She would just remind me that the appointment needs to wrap up since it’s only a 30 minute appointment.
She wouldn’t work with me on getting my dress two weeks before my wedding so I got it six days before. I had to rush my dress to another seamstress to fix her mistakes. This ended up costing me double in alterations.
In my opinion, I would not go to Martha because you will regret it. -
